George Smedley

George Smedley (1846-48, 54-55), son of William and Deborah (Lightfoot) Smedley, was born in Middletown, July 25, 1796. He taught school in Middletown one year. He was a farmer, and attended the markets in Philadelphia. In the Society of Friends, he was active, being a trustee for Middletown Meeting in 1822, an overseer in 1825, an elder in 1842, assistant clerk in 1833, and later was clerk of meeting. In 1839, he was elected County Auditor. On July 18, 1855, he was attending market in Philadelphia, when he was prostrated by the heat, was taken to the home of Samuel Edwards, a friend, in that city, where he died the same day, aged 59 years.
