To: John Bullock - I also received an email from someone named "Al" just "Al" - no email return address with the subject "Re" - now my emails are all a mess and I have received messages from all over the internet telling me that mails I sent (which I never did to these places) are undeliverable. What do I do to clean up this mess? And it takes a loooooooong time for my mailbox to appear on screen. Is this an indication of a virus? HELP!

*** Virus all-clear ***

Just to let you know I'm virus-free once again. My sincerest apologies to anyone who was infected although I think I caught it all quicker this time and not as many emails were sent out.

Also fortunately "W32.Badtrans.B@mm" is not really a malicious virus - just a nuisance that spreads itself with random emails.

A good lesson for all of us to keep our virus definitions updated daily!

For those of you using Norton Antivirus, there is a link on the main page of http://www.symantec.com for info on cleaning/removing W32.Badtrans.B@mm. I'm sure there's also info on McAfee's site as well.

Again, my apologies for any inconveniences.

Ye Olde and Very Humble Webmaster,

John

*** Virus Alert ***

Folks, I have been hit with another virus, "W32Badtrans.B@mm" this morning. This has snuck in between virus definition updates.

I have NOT sent out any emails today. If you receive one from me, don't even click on it. The one I received that must have been the culprit arrived with the subject, "Re: ".

I'm in the process of cleaning up and will advise you again when all is clear.

Have a *great* day!

Ye Olde and Very Humble Webmaster,

John

I remember my father (Jim, Totta) taking me to PMC football games when I was a kid. He worked in the maintenance dept for the college and he always worked Saturdays, the shop was under the stadium so I used to go to work with him, just so that I could get in the games for free, then we would go over to the Goodwill firehouse and I would play on the fire trucks while he sat in, I think the name was Pete's Bar and watch football, before we went home for dinner. That when we lived on Edgemont Ave.

We moved to the West End when I was 7. I hung at 10th and Booth and live in McCafferty. I worked at Joe Market on 10th and Highland. Later on work to work at the W.E.B.C. Have a lot of great memories of the West End and could fill about 20 pages of names of friends. To jamesarthur33309 If you are who I think you are I would like you to email me directly.

To: Pam Silva, I remember you and your brother (Ron) had a minibike and we use to bum rides from him. The last time I saw Cindy she was working at Pep's Saloon on Rt. 420 in Prospect Park that was probably 6 years ago. I know that her husband (Frankie Fox) or ex I'm not sure works for John Gill at the beef and beer in Toby Farms.

To Sandi Rhoads: Was the office located off Chestnut St. between 12th and 13th?. If so I delivered papers for them about 60 years ago. All I really remember is that we collected the paper money either once a week or month and had to go to the office where they would check your book and count the money and pay you. We were delivering Sunday papers once at about 4 AM and stopped at the restaurant at 9th and Morton Ave, I had never had Pie ala Mode before and ordered Lemon Meringue and Chocolate Ice Cream and got the worse case of indeigestion that I have ever had in 74 years.

The Chester High Class of 1976, 25th Reunion came off without a hitch at the Crystal Ballroom in Wilmington, DE. What a great night to get everyone together and celebrate life and our legacy. Our Guests of Honor were: Irma Jackson-Mason, Cliff and Angela Wilson and Joe and Glenna Carroll. We had approx. 300 (including spouses) at the Reunion. There is talk of putting together an All-Classes Alumni Directory and beginning to pull together a full blown Alumni Association. If you are interested in this happening, please e-mail me at ebailey@williamsonschool.org

The Chester High Alumni NEED to get back in touch with today's kids in Chester! Being a former Clipper Wrestler and a current Coach, let's see who steps on the Mat and Wrestle's with this situation!!!!

This is a simple verse we should all be living by.....

Tenui Nec Dimittam Never forget where you came from... Never lose sight of where you are going... Your legacy is all you have to be proud of ....... Let your beacon shine bright ..... Shine on for ever ........... Have a great day, Ed Bailey

Gee Folks, I have some sad news. I just heard from someone who visited here (Phoenix) from the Chester area, and she tells me that our authentic hoagie shop "Taste of Philadelphia" has closed its doors. The end of another era. So, unless I hear differently, and I'll try to find out, we no longer have a Philadelphia hoagie here. If someone out there knows anything further, or where they moved to, please let us know.

TO: U.W. I dont'know if there is any connection but I lost my browser last night and spent four hrs last night on the telephone first with myISP (3 calls). Nothing worked! This morning I tried again, still nothing. I was told to call the mfr. Another four hours and still no results. On my own, I tried everything I Knew including two restorations. Just a few minutes ago everything came back. A mystery. I live in Massachusetts, still on the east coast.

I grew up in Chester and have been away for 42 years....I have many great memories of my Mother working at Sears and shopping at Rogers. My Dad put in many chainlink fences in the Chester Area as a part-time worker for Sears. I still stay in contact with my High school friends from Chester High and visit the City to see the changes about every 10 years. Thank you Chester for the Great childhood memories.

TN: Don't know if Johns' area was having trouble with the telephone servers, but for three days areas in PA, VA and other places were having internal problems that effected going on line, receiving or sending mail. I was on with 9 different techs., and for approx. 10 hours with my computer server trying to get my business computers on track. Some of the Techs were not aware of the internal problem and changed many of my computer configurations.

I thought that perhaps I may have knocked it down since I was last to write. I virus scan daily so I know I have no virus's my computers update automatically.

Even if Johns lines were good, it may have been his SP lines being effected. OR maybe everyone around is stilling feasting on the old gobbler and sleeeping it all off..

2-Me: Sorry to hear that Sarah died. She was a very nice woman and always working. I can see her in my memories eye sweeping off the steps in front of her house and late sitting there. I cannot remember Eddy's father at all. Then of course most of our fathers were out working, in WWII, or had died. I wonder if his cousins Terry and Linda are still living. I do not remember the Zoltek family..But am sorry for their loss. My prayers go out to both families.

ELK-I always volunteered to go to the bakery for bread. Because I was the only one fast enough to get it home while it was still hot. My reward was the end of the loaf with butter that melted and spread through out. The sprint from the bakery to 5th& Madison was always in record time.

Vince-Nowhere can you find a hoagie shop that uses Italian bread like we got in Chester in the 40's&50's.Hard and split on the out- side and chewey on the inside. The shops used to get a couple of deliveries a day from Bunos. Those were the days before they added chemicals to make it stay "fresh" longer. Now the bread is soft, easy to chew, and stays fresh forever but it has no taste. Does anyone remember getting hot rye bread from Minka's Bakery on Morton Ave? Spent 5days in St Pete years back and the locals led me to a tavern on the Gulf. The special was a grouper burger. It was a great sandwich and actually served on a hard roll.

JimM: yes, I knew Mike very well while in Chester. There was also MaryAnn in your class. Alexander P. was behind you several years. Alex I was told was in the Swarthmore area. Mike have not heard about mid 1950's. They did belong to St. Mary's Church on third street. Will see if those I know that are still members have heard about him.

Ruth Ann. I thought I heard she married Bucky. Don't know that thats is fact.

To Richard Tinney Jr; Just remembered that Mr Bloom also had that hardware store before Joe did. I went to school with his son at Smedley, probably in 1942. Do you remember when Hutchinson's Drug store was where the Melrose Restaurant is/was? I worked part time there about 1939. I also used to hang out at Joe's Tydol station across from there and the Delco Ice House when John Reynolds ran it. And I used to walk the Polo Ponies to cool them down at PMC, we used to fight over who would have the privilege of cleaning the horse stalls. Jim Minall???? played us kids like the old Tom Sawyer painting the fence deal.

To Debbie Haynes Tinney: Hi, you did not mention that your father was also a factory registered Harley Davidson Motorcyle mechanic, he used to "soup" up the old Army 45 cubic inch jobs. He is an excellent marksman with any caliber rifle or handgun and did all of his own loading. He is a master model plane and boat builder and has been for the past 65 years or so. these are just a few things off the top of my head. Hope things are going well for you.

Uncle Bud

To Richard Tinney Jr: Don't recall ever meeting you but I have not lived in Sun Village since 1952. Joe was not the original owner of the hardware store, it was owned by Mr Neiberg, he lived on the corner of Johnson Street where you started down the alley in back of the stores, had a daughter Beatrice. I remember Pop Johnson also having the gas station at 9th and Morton Ave too, I think it was when I was going to 6th grade at Larkin School. Some time around 1941 I worked part time at the Wally Lappin Studebaker Agency which was connected to Pop's station, in 1950 I worked across the street for Earl Dunham at the Packard Chester Co. A lot of those memories are a little fuzzy but the more I think about them the clearer they get. BUT the one think that is clear is that THESE are the good old days.

Rich T.Jr.

I can remember when the stores on Morton Ave. where you mentioned was called the "Golden Row" Starting there and going to the Ship yard area and later Scott Paper company. Squires, Foulkes, etc. Wasn't Bob Squire one of the sons of the owners. Near 9th and Morton there was Sorrentino's Tailor - further down Ripers Bar and Grill (I believe 4 sons that went to St. Mikes) Bob Riper died about a year ago.

Also a jewlery store in chester city on 4th or 5th st. was Carmens. Had a dgtr. named Christine and son.

DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER POP JOHNSON'S GAS STATION ON MORTON AVENUE AND THE CAR WASH BEHIND IT? THERE WAS A SIGN ON BULLENS LANE IN RIDLEY TOWNSHIP THAT READ "CAR WASH 25 CENTS, ELEPHANTS WASHED FOR FREE" I RENTED AN AUTO BODY SHOP FOR ABOUT 12 YEARS FROM ROSEY AND THEN SPARKLE CAR WASH, BEFORE I ENDED UP PURCHASING THE COMPLEX IN 1998. I JUST RECENTLY SOLD THE CAR WASH PARCEL AND STILL OWN PART OF THE PROPERTY WHERE I STILL HAVE MY AUTO BODY SHOP. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER SQUIRES' HOAGIE SHOP, PEBBLES PRINT SHOP, FOULKES JEWELERS? JOE'S HARDWARE IS THE ONLY ORIGINAL BUSINESS LEFT ON THE AVENUE AND THEY ARE GOING OUT OF BUSINESS NOW, WORD IS THAT THE CITY BOUGHT UP ALL THE PROPERTY AND THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE TEARING THEM DOWN???

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE.

LAURA: If you receive the Del. Co. Daily times you would have seen that on Vet.Day there was a notation of your Neighbor from Brown Street in Ed. Gebharts col. It was about Olga Z. being home on leave during WWII. Although I receive the paper late, it was a fond memory as I can remember when she came home from Italy she visited with my Mom.

Does anyone remember Joes (Pastuzek) supply yard when it was on 9th street just north of Sacred Heart Hospital. You could find anything you were looking for there. it was a experience just walking thru the place.

Just wanted to update you guys, Pat Brown died August, 1998. He had been retired for quite a few years (maybe 15 years)and was living in Brookhaven with his wife Judy. Not sure if he had made Sargeant, but I know he had made Corporal. Mary, his sister, is doing well and also lives in Brookhaven. Feel free to email me with any questions.......... Seeing Harvey Martin's message re Chester v Media at PMC, brought back a few east end memories. As youngster, I used to see Chester HS and PMC football games there. Those were the days before we knew we were poor but we knew we didn't have any money. We would wait until the cop on horseback was as far away as possible and then run across the lower field with him in pursuit. By Jr HS, I used to go to the gym to play pickup basketball games with the cadets. Never paid to see a PMC basketball game. An old gentleman named Smoker Gallagher always passed me though.

From the Delaware Co. Daily Times - Tuesday, June 7, 1966 '38 Chester Game "The Greatest" PROBABLY the greatest moment in Media High School athletic history occurred on the morning of Nov. 24, 1938. It was the morning Buddy Behrends kicked a 45 yard field goal -- that twice hit the goalpost -- in the final min- ute of play to give Media a 3-0 victory over arch Thanks- giving Day rival Chester High. Over the years, the hottest Turkey Day rivalry in Dela- ware County was the clash between Media and Chester. Despite vast differences in the size of the schools' student bodies, the Mustangs and Clippers went to battle nearly every Thanksgiving between 1900 and 1958. When the series ceased, Chester had a commanding edge, having won 32, lost 12 and tied six. Of those 50 games, however, none was more memorable from a Media standpoint than the 1938 clash. * * * HEAVILY favored Chester went into the battle with a 4-3-1 record, but had not lost a single game to a county team, and was fighting for the coveted county football championship. Media, on the other hand, plagued throughout the season by injuries, had a mediocre 3-5 log, and had not beaten the Clippers since 1926. In fact, the Mustangs had only won three games from Chester since the series began. A lot of money was bet before the game, and most of it was on Chester, although the Mustangs outweighed the Clip- pers of Coach Johnny Abrams by an average of 172 pounds to 154. The game was held at PMC Stadium. Although some who remember the game recall a crowd of 10,000, the old Ches- ter Times placed the number of spectators at 4000. It snowed slightly during the game, but not enough to blanket the field. * * * FOR THE better part of four quarters the teams bat- tled viciously. The only time either team came close to scoring was in the first half when Coach Gus Anderson's Mustangs advanced to the Clippers' 3 yard line before losing the ball on a fumble. With a little less than one minute to play, however, Media drove to the Chester 26- yard line. There was time for only a few more plays, and on fourth down captain Charley Williams called Behrends out of his tackle post to kick a field goal. Behrends had not attempted any prior field goals dur- in the season but had kicked a number of extra points. Jack Messick, then only a sophomore, had just come in at center a few plays earlier He snapped the ball to Wil- liams, the holder. * * * THE ACCOUNT in the Chester Times the next day de- scribed the ensuing kick thusly: "Deliberately, Behrends sized up the 45 yard distance the pigskin would have to carry, and just as deliberate- ly he swung his foot. The carry was excellent, but Ches- ter fans were beginning to heave sighs of relief as it flew off to one side." "But just as quickly, their prospects of a scoreless tie were shattered. The ball hit the upright, dropped and struck the crossbar, and bounced over the side which meant three points." "Media fans went wild and as far as they were concern- ed the ensuing kickoff and a couple of desperate Chester passes were a mere formality. As soon as the game was over, jubilant Media rooters rushed on the field, hoisted Behrends to their shoulders, and gave him a true hero's reception." "It was one of those things which never happen in story books." MEDIA WAS so enthralled with the victory that the fol- lowing Monday was declared a town holiday. Classes at the school were excused, and the football players were given free merchandise in many of the local stores. Many old timers still recall that game and the way it became turning point in the Media - Chester rivalry with fond memories. From 1938-49, Media defeated Ches- ter eight times and tied once. *** BEHRENDS, WHO now lives in Brookhaven, recalls his feat with little emotion. "It was just an old field goal, and just another ball game as far as I was con- cerned," he said recently. "All I did was kick the ball. There was no rush put on. I just took my time. I wasn't thinking anything after I kicked it." It was a kick, though, that most Mediaites of the era have thought about often since 1938.

I am in the first phase of trying to organize a reunion for St Michael's Class 1944. As with most men my age the Korean War came along ... but for me ... I was discharged on the west coast and remained there. Fortunately I was not present for the destruction of Chester. I just recently moved to CO.

In the past I have returned to Del County many times but only to visit my parents.

In the recent year I have been communicating (email) with several St James Classmates 1948 ... some of whom are St Michael classmates. There seems to a desire to have another St Michael Class of 1944 reunion.

Unfortunately there is very little information about their whereabouts. I would like to hear from anyone who may know any of these people. I initially stared a wed site about the class and it was not orientated to a class reunion. It does contain the classmates names and the little information I know. Especially not knowing the married surnames of the females. I eventually will make a web site just for the reunion. The current one is:

www.geocities.com/a70guido/stmichael/ohara.htm

I would appreciate a review of the names and any information about any of them.

Best Regards, Bob Boscola

To Judy R: Wow Judy, you have a great memory. Yes, that was my 53 chevy sedan delivery with the flames on the hood. Jerry Szelak and I did a lot of cruisin up to "Moe's" in that wreck. Jerry joined the army in 65 and married a girl from Florida. He was in missles and spent a lot of time stationed at the old Homestead AFB. The last I heard from him was when he was stationed in Germany and I contacted him over the MARS radio system. I checked with classmates.com several months ago and saw that he had retired as an E-8, not bad for one of the hoodlums that hung out at 6th & Wilson. I believe he is living in Florida now. He was my best "bud" back then and I named my youngest boy after him. Did you have any luck getting hooked up for the chat room yet? Let me know if you are still encountering problems,,,,George

Pete, the youngest, used to help Dad and I in the TV shop and sometimes helped me with Antenna's, although he had a tendancy to fall off the roof. He through an Antenna mast off the roof of Levy's Furniture Store and hit my Dad in the head with it. I guess you had to be there. Sorry to hear about Pat and Sonny passing away. Now, do you think we can bug Mr. S. enough to get him to join the chat room? I'll keep trying....George

I saw on the internet tonight, in one of the North Carolina obituaries that a Norman Craig passed away. Does anyone remember the Craig family from 9th and Madison street area. He had a sister Audrey I believe. They were awnry kids. The obit gives no info except that he passed away - doesn't list survivors or former place of residence. I always did wonder what happened to that family. House was on the north side of 9th street about in the middle of the block.

I drove up yesterday from NC and had a nice dinner last night at the new Upland Diner (formerly a Hardee's at 22nd St. & Upland Ave.) While there, I ran into and had a nice visit with a couple of our oldchesterpa.com regular visitors.

I'll be in the area for a couple of days so if I see anything newsworthy to report, I'll post it right here on the Guest Book at "The Newsstand".

Hope that everyone will have a *great* day!

This website certainly brings back a lot of memories. Living at 9th & Parker from the time I was 7, Saturday mornings in football season were a treat - the band marching to the athletic field for a game. And they practiced during the week at nite on Fulton Street. Seems band music has always been in my life. I remember as a child being facinated by the drum major a tall fella by the name of Gary. What an impresssive figure he made leading the band.

Then there was the time I was in high school and Coach Staffieri had someone parachute in the game ball. Anything for school spirit!!

The playground at 10th & Fulton with the Little League field. Summer days and nite spent there having fun - watching games, playing basketball on the court if the "older guys" would let us use the court.

Ah, memories!!

Anyone else remember these things????

To: Testing 1-2-3 - why don't you identify yourself - maybe either you'll get an answer or someone will know who you are and take you home to rest. This is not the purpose of this board. Perhaps you weren't very well liked when you lived in "old chester" and you certainly aren't gaining any friends today. I am playing your game. Isn't this dull?

The bakery reffered to was Liskiewicz's Bakery. Wher e in the evening after dark you could buy hot rye bread and doughnuts just out of the oven. The smells from the back dor made you think you died and went to heaven. And you cant get a roll like they made back then. Now all you get is air. You cant get a roll like that now.

John: I think Ches-Pen and Ann's were two different donut shops. I must have missed Ann's. Was Ann's next or down from the Welsh restaurant? I left Chester after graduating 8th grade at Dewey.

As for Ranger Joe...Yes, what a great memory. As a kid I though Ranger Joe was a real person.

Does anyone remember a group/club from CHS that wore these really great jackets with a little Man pushing a pencil decal on the back. I think they were called "The Pencil Pushers". Was that the Commercial class or just a select group?

One of the Markets that opened had this Giant Tiger baloon standing in front..does anyone remember?

Dan, I remember when Mikes was where stackes is now next to the fire house on between 2nd & 3rd sts and Staches was across the street onthe west side. Thats when you could get a large special for &1.00 and a springfield 12 oz soda for 10 cents. I was told that stackes closed down. Big loss for Chester. I remember when Mike left 7th St he moved up to Clifton Heights. Lost track of him after that. Thats when Uncle Johnny and Ernie,My Father in Law, opened LaSpadas in Parkside. My Dad would take me to Mikes about 1950 when I started working summers and I would eat a large Hoagie,A quart bottle of soda and a pint of ice cream and Mike would ask my Dad if he still had to pay me after he paid for all that food. To Vince: I can well appreciate that there are some of Chester's favorite food in Florida, because so many moved there as opposed to Phoenix. That's why I thought it so unique to have a "taste of Chester" here - so many more miles away. So, if you're thinking of moving to Phoenix, don't hesitate - we have hoagies too!! And, bring along some scrapple - we need it.

And by the way, those delicious glazed donuts you are all talking about, could they be the forerunners of Krispy Kremes? They sound awfully familiar. Any one out there know?

To Pat McFadden, Phoenix isn't the only area with a taste of Chester.24 Years ago my brother in law, myself and our wifes opened Colonial Corner Hoagie shop in Pinellas Park,Florida, just outside St.Petersurg. My wifes mother is Joesaphine Caccia,John LaSpadas older sister. My inlaws and john started LaSpadas Original in Parkside Pa Years ago.Mom and my wife worked there and my oldest son Vince even worked there. Now Josephine works for us in Florida. We make the same sandwichs that they made in Chester. There are a lot of people from that area down here.I have a bakery here that makes a pretty good hoagie roll using Bunos Recpt.I had to soften up the bread a little bit because down south any thing thats hard they think it's stale. Different world. We make a lot of Cheese Steaks. Vince StJ.56

All this talk of food has me hungry. Does anyone remember Ranger-Joe's Cereal plant on 4th St. We used to climb in the dumpster looking for toys that should have made it into cereal boxes, but ended up in the trash. The smell from that plant was great ! Sometimes a worker could be talked into tossing out to us kids a ball of hot cereal to munch on. You couldn't beat the breads from Liskievich (I'm sure I misspelled it) also known as Chester Bakery on second street , off of highland ave. I have to go get something to eat. Regards John

To all former Chesterites now living in the Phoenix, AZ area: I want to let you know that we have an authentic hoagie shop here (upscale too) called "Taste of Philadelphia." I just heard from Lou Warfel who now lives here and he tells me one of his sons and a friend started that shop - about, I think, ten plus years ago. I knew the people behind the counter were from my area because of our pronounced "accent" (I was one of their first customers). Sure enough, the originator of this business is from Chester, PA - not Philadelphia, or Delaware, but Chester. He tells me his son sold the business, but the hoagies are still the best. They used to carry Scrapple and TastyKakes too, but the scrapple wasn't the same after being frozen and shipped. We still have TastyKakes but no more scrapple, which I miss. The other day I saw a bag of Wise potato chips - carried by someone - don't know where they got them. I knew if I stayed in Phoenix long enough, some of those good foods would eventually arrive here. Except, whatever happened to those wonderful breaded porkchops all our mothers made-bought fresh at the corner store and charged to our account? And, somehow, mashed potatoes don't taste the same. Well, have to go, my cook, Marie Callendar, is calling me for dinner.

John: Are you referring to the Ches-Pen Donuts. If so ..YES.. they had delicious glazed donuts. The owners later opened a Ches-Pen in Ridley Twp. Don't know if anywhere else ..I think their name was Braza.

The glaze as I remember it from Chester was crisp. They also made a creme filled that was the best.

I'm not sure if Ann's is the same donut shop. All I do know is Ches-Pen in Chester always had a line waiting to satisfy ones donut sweet. I would think the same happened in Ridley when they opened there. tooth.

PDC: I believe that was Bucky's last name. Larry's last name was Sulecki. Larry had a older sister Mary. Mr. Sulecki was a widower and I believe married Bucky's Mom who was a widow. Many people thought they were brothers..Larry died several years ago..Bucky I have not heard of in 50 years. Both worked their butts off in the back section of the bakery. It was not easy work in those days lifting the 100 lb bags of flour.

John Marchlik:

I was emailed that the butcher I referred to was named John. He originally worked at BJPrice. Then moved to the little store when BJPrice changed hands. Not the Johns grocery store john. I can't remember if it was Cal's or Johns that made a Kiska that was good too. As for rye bread..Ben's bakery at 2nd and Highland as I recall made the best breads. Mr. Sulecki was the baker in the back. He had one arm but could really turn out those loafs. It was an experience watching him kneed and load the baking trays. We were not suppose to go into the back, but once in a while Larry and Bucky would be working and Larry would take his friends back for a fresh loaf right out of the oven. Sometimes if we got there early enough they would give us the fresh jelly donuts to take home for breakfast.

They were the good old days when a donut was a donut, not air filled dough.

In the 50's , Joe Cal, brother of stanley Cal (who had Cal's hoagie shop on 3rd & Hayes ), ran the market on 4th & Wilson.I once watched him make Kielbasa,as he was my uncle. Joe Cal sold the store and recipe to Henry Grucela, who ran it as Grucela's Market. When he left the business, Peter's market took over the process for a while. Some west end trivia. John Marchlik

(don't hold me to that one) He hung with Billy Myers if memory still is holding correct. I also think he may have been a cousin to the Gebharts boys. Seem to remember Marty Johnson, but I don't believe I knew him well. Don't seem to recall Ron Stewart.

JimM: Yes I remember BJPrice..They later changed to I think Chester Rose..They had a butcher there that make the best kalbasi I ever tasted. He later left and went to a little store across from St. Hedwigs. I don't know his name, but he was able to season the meat just right for my Taste buds. From what I understood, his recipe was a secret only to himself. And that bacon, delicious!!!! Today you cannot find bacon that gets that golden crisp. Of course in our house growing up we used "Fat Back"..and loved eating the little pieces after they were fried down for oil...You could walk into the meat packing section and buy whatever you wanted. And on Christmas, they had the "Shank type Hams" I don't even know if you can get a shank today.

I did see on this site that Frank Campbell died.

Ooooooh. Do remember the field; have to get my glasses tuned up so I can read what is written. Never really played there. But do remember playing at Memorial Park while they were building it. They had these huge cement pipes where the guys from Dewey would go and smoke. You could walk thru them they were so tale.

Laura..Have not spoken with Olga yet, did copy the messages. Will send them to her. I totally forgot about sending them as I said I would earlier. I do not know her Daughter although I have met her as a child I have met her grandchild. Her grandchild is a beautiful teen.

R. McLauglin: there were ports of entry in Philadelphia. One on Washington Avenue and I believe the other was South Street. Many Eastern Europeans came through Philly. If you have gone on to the EllisIsland site http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/ you might find the name there. when you enter it, the spelling many not be as you spell it now. When boarding passenger ships to come to America most of the time the ships personnel did not speak the Language of the immigrants. They would write the name as they heard it pronounced. Also check the friends name, last names first then move on from there. Also, many people came over on someone else's identification. Not because of anything illegal, but because of the waiting time, etc. Also when you find a Last name, check the dates of entry even if the first name of the person is unknown to you. Go into the original manifest and magnify it where it saids to do so, you might be able to read the destination and people that they were coming to live with. http://www.CyndisList.com/westeuro.htm

Try Cyndislist, it will guide you to finding information if you have not tried there yet..

My grandfather was Nicholas Turk from 2nd. & Lloyd Sts. His wife was Anna Likens (Lykens) daughter of Bill Likens of Lloyd Athletic Club. I'm trying to get info on his birthplace on Ischia.

My mom, Rita Turk 1919- 2001 said that my grandfather was born in Italy, on the Isle D'Ischia off coast of Naples, just across from Isle D'Capri. I think that he came over from Italy with a Mr. DeLuca in first decade of 1900s. I can't seem to find a record of his immigration into New York. Maybe someone knows if he came into America thru another gateway? Jersey, Philly, etc.? I believe that the Deluca family evenyually settled from Chester to Aston, PA in '50s or '60s. Any info is appreciated. Thanks. Bob McLaughlin

ERza: Don't remember the cars piled in mountains on sixth street, probably before my time (Haha) or after. But do remember playing "King of the hill" on those slag piles dumped on that open field behind the hid-a-way card player's garage. I believe a Mr. Hess owned that Slag company. can't remember all, but wasn't that stuff some type of waste material from the pipe mill. don't recall some of the names you listed. gotta take some more of those Senior Memory Vitamins.

JM: couple more names for yea: Danny Hudson, Robert and Barbara Klein Barbara Vaul, Frank Campbell, Audrey Wilson.
