MISS ALICE EDWARDS
May 4, 1858 - May 30, 1940

Miss Alice Edwards, who retired 12 years ago after being a Chester school teacher for 48 years, died at 3 o’clock yesterday morning at the home of her nephew, Joseph W. Bartow, 30 Chester Pike, Ridley Park, where she resided. She had observed her eighty-second birthday on May 24. Death came after a lingering illness.

Miss Edwards was a member of the Madison Street Methodist Church, of which her father was sexton when it was located on Fifth Street. Born at Richmond, Ind., she was a graduate of Chester High School and Gilbert’s Academy, Broad and Potter Streets, teaching at the Graham School and being principal of the Thurlow and Horace Mann Schools. Besides Mr. Bartow, she is survived by three other nephews, Harry E. and William L. Bartow, and Logan B. Edwards.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Minshall parlors with burial in Prospect Hill Cemetery. The Rev. J. Perry Cox, of Madison Street Church will officiate.

Family reference: Bartow; Edwards. She was daughter of Joseph Johnson Edwards b. Sept. 1, 1824 and Eliza Hobson. Joseph and Eliza were married May 28, 1846. He died February 16, 1893.
