Sorry I was unable to attend our recent reunion celebrating the illustrious Class of 1948.
Someone asked about Doris Adams.
Doris lived next door to me in Parkside when we were both children. We both attended Parkside
Elementary School in the First and Second grades, then my family moved. I attended her wedding at the Parkside Methodist Church. Her name became Doris (Adams) Demko. She later divorced. The last time I saw Doris was in the 70's when she was working at Howard Johnson's. At that time, she told me that she planned to re-marry and move to Florida. If anyone knows of her whereabouts, I too would love to contact her.
I hope someone who attended our recent reunion will post information here about the reunion, or will write to me.

Fannin County grieves loss of distinguished leader

Some people were amazed that he had once been selected as the top enlisted man in the USAF. After all, the Air Force had over half a million enlisted personnel in 1973 when Tom Barnes was selected as the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force. Others said that you had to see him working cattle on horseback to appreciate the range of skills that Mr. Barnes was blessed with. While there were many gifts given to Thomas Barnes, he always managed to give more in return and that is how he will always be remembered in Bonham and across North Texas. Personally, I will never forget the first time I heard Mr. Barnes say grace. It was the best sermon I ever heard.
Fannin County resident Thomas N. Barnes passed away Monday, March 17, 2003 after a lengthy illness. Raised in Chester, Pennsylvania by a father that was a Baptist minister and a mother that taught school, Thomas N. Barnes learned at an early age to appreciate the dynamic forces at work in a culturally diverse neighborhood. The loving guidance of perceptive parents enabled Mr. Barnes to understand the world around him in a way that few people achieve. Once he stepped out of his comfortable surroundings in Pennsylvania, he stepped into a
world that was just beginning to deal with racial differences. Having been blessed with a family that realized it was a necessity to understand each other and after growing up in a city where all groups coexisted peacefully, Thomas Barnes grasped the importance of harmony in everyone was to achieve a common goal. "That has been an unwavering goal for me," Barnes told North Texas e-News
in an interview last fall, "from that day until now. "That goal, along with a powerful spiritual belief, helped Thomas Barnes
become a valued and respected catalyst as the USAF moved from a segregated past into an organization that understands it must demand equality from top to bottom in order to function efficiently.
The Air Force Chief of Staff that helped guide Barnes' selection as the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force was an extremely capable military strategist, General George S. Brown. General Brown confided to Barnes: "It will be better for you to travel alone in most instances, although at times it will be advantageous for us to stand together on an issue. I will
make my support known through our meetings with the Air Force General
Officers. "Before visiting every base, Barnes would review the Inspector General's report to identify specific issues that had been a previous concern at
that location. As policy was being developed, the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force was not only part of that process, his input was crucial when it came time to review the implementation of that policy. As the voice of over half a million airmen, his perspective was invaluable to the
Chief of Staff.
"One key element to the job," Barnes said he learned quickly, "was that you never went to the Chief and brought his attention to a problem without giving him a recommended solution and the reasoning behind why your
solution would work. My presentations were thorough because the Chief of Staff already had enough problems without me handing him difficult decisions without possible solutions."
During his 28 year career, Thomas Barnes held a number of distinguished
positions. He flew for nine years as a flight engineer on a variety of aircraft, seeing duty in Korea, the Cuban missle crisis and Vietnam
and earning distinctive decorations
for courage and leadership in a number of
tense international situations.
His major awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and Outstanding Airman of the Year Award. So impressive
were Mr. Barnes contributions that at McConnell Air Force Base a new
training building was named in his honor. The Thomas N. Barnes Career
Education Center will forever be a monument to one man's dedication to his country and to his compassion for his fellow man. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Mr. Barnes worked at the First National Bank of Fort Worth as an Employee Relations Officer for seven years. He was then hired by the Associates Corporation of North America and promoted to Vice President/Director of Employee Relations at
the corporate headquarters in Las Colinas. After retiring to Fannin County, Mr. Barnes was able to spend a little more time doing something else he was very good at. For two years in a row he won the team penning at the Kueckelhan Rodeo, teaming up with
Ronnie Sudderth and Howard Bachest the first year and working with
Sudderth and Jimmy Kerr the second year. Mr. Barnes and his lovely wife Marie also raised Longhorn cattle. People around this area will tell you that as notable as his past was, nothing could have been more impressive than the positive Christian leadership Thomas Barnes graced us with during his stay here in North Texas. Our condolences go to his family. He truly was a special man that
made us all feel we belonged in that group; maybe someday we will all realize he was right. Funeral arrangements are pending at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham.
