MessageI attended Dewey Mann School for one year, Sept. 1959 to June 1960. Mr. Gordy was my 6th grade teacher at that time. He was an excellent teacher with a knack for making learning fun. He was serious about teaching kids. Students liked and respected him. Miss Griffin was the principal at that time. Many of the students feared her, but she taught us early on school was a place for learning and not for wasting time. We respected Miss Griffin and her approach to education and learning.
I enjoyed my one year at Dewey Mann School. There were happy times and sad times. And honestly, when I put them all together, I come up with 'fond memories.'

MessageFor those who would like to share pictures and articles with us which you have readily at hand, once a year we have a Oldchesterpa reunion and people from all over come with their treasured items. We have scanners there so that you can have the item returned immediately after our scanning. ........Kinko's, Staples and any copy place can scan a copy for mailing at a fraction of the cost of a professional photographer.
Thank you all for visiting this site. oh...if you go to the top of this page and click on the Old Chester then in What's New...the yellow Bowl addition has a photo of Mr. J. Vaul and some children of the 1940's.

MessageFreda: if you can scan the photo and send it to John@oldchesterpa.com that would be greatly appreciated. As you may know it is thru the sharing of people with their treasures that this site is able to continue preserving the history of Chester that you were all familiar with. If you can't scan it, and you felt you could mail it safely for use here, you can send it to Johns address which appears above in the gray box at the top of this page. He can be emailed also at the e-address given if you have concerns.
if you could identify the members of that class picture when you share it, that would be a major plus.
thank you for your interesting in adding to Oldchesterpa.

My entire family attended Horace Mann and Dewey; brothers Mike and Bob and sisters Betty, Grace and Gail. I entered Horace Mann in 1943 for my first 6 years of primary and then across the way to Dewey for grades 7 and 8, completing them in 1951. John Vaul was principal and I remember a Mr Plafker as principal also (later??)

Memories of Dewey flood this slightly vintage mind. Girls in those "beautiful" gym suits that were blue and had elastic around the legs. Girls going to shop class to make sewing boxes while the boys traded places and learned to boil water. When Christmas holiday neared, going to art class and making cutout and layed Christmas wreaths, candles Nativities to be hung later on the windows for school decorations. Going though out the school area before Halloween painting the windows with your creative and most scarey art work -counting on winning the prize.
Chief Halftown coming to the school and giving a program. Our class going to Hedgerow Theater to see our first live proformance of a off broadway show.
Gym class and before the 8th grade prom having the gym teacher trying desperately to show kids with two left feet to get them going for a slow dance. No modern dances mind you.
Then the class trip to Washington DC. What a thrill for the members that went to climb on a bus for a lonnnnnnnnnnng ride to Washington without our parents. Hey we were grown ups finally.
Thats a start, you can now add more.
