It's not a shock to me to see how some of you are behaving on this site. The usual gossiping that always was and always will be a Holy Ghost thing. So sad. Who cares who is e-mailing who and what goes on between them. You people need to get a life or at least worry about your own lives and not everuone else's. DCH, Kathy and George don't let them get you down. And people wonder why not many of our generation come to Holy Ghost anymore.....not worth the aggravation. To everyone else I hope you have a Happy New Year!

What was he sick from?? Give us the details. I heard in church that his family had mentioned to someone that he recently died. Now you hear from him. And Kathy P says he is either forgetful or ihumorous and resting. You two going to fight it out over him?? After all he has said bad about us Ukranians, I don't like him at all.

I didn't hear about George. That is a terrible rumor to start, he really was a very knowledgable man and brought some humor to the site. Please don't write bad things about him. I read he wasn't feeling well but I don't think anything has happened, perhaps he is just taking a break or resting. If you read some of his posts you will find he was a very intelligent man and quite witty. I don't remember him to well from Holy Ghost although I know he did attend there. This site should reflect good things about Chester and our Alma mater so lets try and end the year peacefully and bring on the new one the same. He may have forgotten about this site, I lost the bookmark when my computer crashed and haven't read about this site for a long time. Happy Holydays to all and God Bless us everyone. Enjoy the season.

Kathy:

Sorry for the long time lapse. I just have been busy and haven't been back here to check for months! Yes, my Mom was Catherine, and she was very active in HG church activities..... Perogies, bingo, banquets, etc. She died the day after Christmas in 1995 in the Belvedere nursing home after slowly deteriorating from dimentia over a period of about a year.

I wish everyone here would at least leave their full names, so we all would know who has left messages here.

They are also putting together a nice luncheon, I hope it is well attended. I remember when Mr Bandursky use to dress up at Holy Ghost. Its such a nice tradition. Also the pierogies will be on sale again, what a great fundraiser.

To all of the graduates of 77, just popped in to say hi. Not much on this site from the old crowd, but i did happen to catch a couple of old friends. Sheila , just wanted to apologize about asking to copy your homework assignment most every morning in 7th grade. Couldn`t help but remember that as soon as i read your name. Its funny how the teacher would always call me after you would finish your public speaking assignment, and i would recite practically line for line what you had just read. How imbarrasing that was. I can feel my ears turning red just thinking of it. Which reminds me of lisa kourich, who would sit in the frount of the class and say *look at his ears*, that really helped alot. All in fun Im sure. And Dave K out there in california always felt you would be a big ceo for some company, beings you were the smartest of the bunch. Dont tell that to anthony engle. ps was i really that bad? hope to see all someday glenn.

Dear George:

You are the funniest guy on this web page. You do tell it like it is. I think it is great in what you are doing in life. Holy Ghost needs a person like you. I don't blame you for moving on, out of Chester. The people that do go to church here are so miserable in their lives. But they act so pious in church. This girl Donna is funny. I see that you don't know who she is. You have been asking since March. She doesn't have the courtesy to even tell you. But, she volunteers herself for a steak dinner. Funny, I don't recall you taking applications to go to Belize, either. Your dedication to God sounds wonderful. It's taken me a week to write this. Remember when I visited you in Brookhaven after your mother died? Those were a great four hours. You were a perfect gentleman. You never once made a pass at me. How come? Remember the sundae at the Dairy Queen? I thought you had given me the world. We sat and talked on the sidewalk. I was totally and happily married, and I still am. Yet that day, I would have given it all, to be with you. Now that you know who I am, please keep my identity between us a secret. I would rather admire you from afar. You're the best. I'll never forget you.

A tribute on the web for Karolina:

A very sad 'vichnaya pamyat' for Karolina Rembisz, of Garfield, NJ. She adopted me as her grandson in 1995. I found out she died, at 99. She was 100% pure Polish, and a true lady.

The day I came to Washington, I had two brandies with her. She loved brandy, I love her, we both cried. It was an honour. I'll never have a drink again.

And now you must sleep Bobchi. Your body won't hurt you anymore. Wait until the day when you hear HIS voice call your name to awake.

"Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time", by Philly's Delfonics is on the jukebox. Man, that song fries my brain. It reminds me of Chester. Not Brookhaven, nor Beach Haven, but Chester.

So, the Penn Fruit is closed? Anyone remember the Club 31 in that plaza? The morning I was born, my dad was shooting pool there. I learned how to shoot stick @ Club 31. Back then kids could sit at the bar.

The Gino's, across the street, 9th & Booth. Something special about their mustard on a burger.

I can't really remember ice creme @ Honeysuckle. Even though it was right behind my grandmother's house (2614 W 7th Street, with the big white awning).

Does the firehouse, across from the Highland Ave SEPTA train stop, still have that odd siren?

Gimme eight bucks worth of quarters for the (cheap) movies all night. How about another two for the songs on the jukebox? I am afraid of sleeping, I gotta' stay awake. I'll smoke the butts in the sand ashtray outside the door. It'll be alright.

You can't put your arms around a memory. And you really don't know what you have, until it is gone.

(our anti-hero gets up, and walks out to the bus stop, alone)

Death hurts for those of us left.

Donna:

Oh yeah, I remember the so called "hot blonde in the sports car" now.

A few days after my mothers funeral, I get this phone call from someone paying her respects. That was "Stella" from Scott Paper. It was also the most pathetically crass relationship I ever had.

Stella was cool in a few ways. She was 12 years older then me, never married, no kids. She wore leather pants, heels, and looked like Annie Lennox from the Eurythmics. That was where the cool ended.

On our second date, she talked marriage and money (that is NOT how to impress me). She did NOTHING I asked her to do, I was the one definitely along for the ride, in her eyes. She even found a house for 'us'. I broke up there after a month. That month there was nothing else to do.

She NEVER crossed the Commodore Barry with me to Atlantic City. Amazing how stories get twisted.

I have to get some coffee, and check out the jukebox.

Hey George -

She said that the place is really laid back - too laid back! On a good day there is only 500 people there. Why on earth would you want to open a radio station there? She said that there is nothing there but very large American bank accounts. You got one of those, George?? In that case - I'm IN!!!

I know that you would remember me. Our parents worked at Scott Paper together.

Boy what a nice page we have here! It’s the goofiest, and sometimes, most disrespectful page on oldchesterpa.com. I love it! No wonder it is my cover page. More fun then an AOL Chat Room. Let’s have some fun now, shall we? And since there is nothing personal on this page, no offenses taken, right?

Man, if some of you talk like you write, nobody understands you.

Ever check out some of the other school pages? Everyone leaves e mail addies, and full and married names. Very cool. But not here, see we’re Ukies! Well, I’m a mutt. A half breed - 1/2 Norwegian and 1/2 Uke. So, that means in life that I at least got things half right. Myron once told me I was a b_____d, cause my parents weren’t married in the ‘church’. They married in Elkton, Maryland. My mom was denied the ‘church sacraments’ forever.

To the girl who keeps snoring on this page; “Here honey, skin pop this Obetrol. It’ll kick in in five minutes. Take another piece of this Juicy Fruit gum, you’re beginning to look better already”.

I’d really enjoy a real time reunion. If they locked us up in the auditorium for a weekend, it could be a cool pisser..

Of course, there would be all different invitations. Mine says to meet in Cleveland. So here I am on Lafayette Street, lost. See, the invitations were put together by the ‘All Ukie Reunion committee’.

No problem, as I board a boat. The SS Ucranium. All Ukie crew. Tonight they are having pizza by the slice. The crew is nice, and they take me to the kitchen. A bunch of old panyi’s are downstairs there in the kitchen, throwing up these little triangles, into the air. See, it’s Ukie pizza by the slice, and they are throwing up “l>’s”. Get it? It is hard to explain things online, without finger puppets.

I get to meet the gang in the engine room. There is a huge puddle and a bunch of men with hand drills, digging into the floor. “What are you doing?” I ask. “Vader commet in boat, vee uset ‘vaterletterowter (Water letter outer)”. I get a bit nervous. But the SS Ucranium makes it to port.

Problem is, arriving, we hit the dock three times. And the port isn’t New York, where we were supposed to land, but Baltimore. Oh well, thank GOD for Amtrak.

So, I get there. A good time is expected by all! We sign in and everyone has a name card. They don’t have one for me, so I get a card - the nine of diamonds.

Hey 50 - 50 tickets for sale! I buy 10. Mine all have the number 54 on them. The winning number is 2064.

We could start by smoking in the boys room in the vestibule. Yeah, that was the spot back then - surprise teachers! So, I would get the idea to check and see what the girls room is. “Wow, so that is what it looks like”? In the girls bathroom is a bidet’ (<<--Spelling?). A young lady there explains nicely, and medical language wise, what it is. I get a bit sick. I think back to seeing them in Belgium. All this time, I thought they were bathroom drinking fountains! No wonder the water tasted funny! I must get to the clinic and get shots.

Ok, so I step outside., right on the corner of Third and Booth. Light up a cigarette, and hey, there is a nice girl hanging around. She says something about ‘hooking’. I start to talk about fishing. She offers me some money to leave her alone. I scarf up $500 from her, and walk away. “Hey, this is gonna be cool”. I guess Chester girls don't fish.

Back into the festivities. We hear on the intercom (with the blinking red light) that there is a 'French Fry Bobbing' contest. I used to be a goalie for a dart board team (does it show?), and remember. “No, I better not, that hot oil would mess me up more”.

Hey, we decide to go check out some altar wine. It was in the priest changing area. Somehow, the cops are called. “Hey, we can put on these cassocks”. We explain to the cops that were are all seminarians. Somehow, I get elected arch bishop, and get to spend a few hours in the nick, downtown.

Well, by now, the party is getting over. Gee, “Without You” is playing, but I still have my nine of diamonds card for a souvenir.

We gotta' do this again. I tell ya, it would be fun.

Insolent, incorrigible, and insubordinate? Yes, I am, but I remain.

I guess if we can’t laugh at ourselves, somebody else will laugh at us.

I do love this page.

Donna, good for you - never sit still, and let time pass you by. Stay cool!

I’m not a Jew. That’s only one tribe. I believe CHRIST is Messiah.

"Bless the hands that til the land, Jah Rasta seh" by President Brown is on the reggae tape. I gotta go get lunch now. Sounds like Eyetalian would do the trick.

So why does George live out in the NW? Probably up to no good.

The chapters in the book continue. Summer 1997, I'm bartending in NYC. I also get to volunteer at a store front ministry in Passaic NJ.

So, I get on the internet and start to look for work along these lines. Ended up here:

http://www.threadsoflight.org/crew.html

It's a non-denominational Chistian ministry. Well, I changed to the Messianic faith. No denomination, statements, and I ain't Protestant, either.

What kind of work is it? Ok, so I make videos, that's part of it. We service not only homeless, but those that are in need - period. Except drugs and alcohol are NOT tolerated. Women, children, anyone. It is very sad to see 10 year old kids know what meth scabs are. Society is falling to bits.

I get to do radio promos, counsel, and whatever is needed. I'm still a bit autonomous.

So, there ya go. It's fun reminiscing on the page. But, I work serious, and have fun at it.

Should the Good LORD allow, my plan is to go to Belize in 2006, to set up a radio station for a ministry forming there, then.

But George, yer sick. Well, my doctor told me yesterday, he don't believe that I am actually healing. I'm not contagious, and it ain't STD.

So, don't turn the pages on the chapter yet, I wanna' hang out for awhile.

When was the Annie play? was it only certain grades? I read someone talking about perogies and I FONDLY remember my grandfather coming in during lunch and buying a box on Friday's. REMEMBER KNEELING DURING LUNCH for punishment? That was cruel of the school to do that! Sometimes makes you wonder how the school was Catholic yet the thought teaching was STRICT discipline! Helen, fess up babe. Oh, I said that.

Yeah it would be cool on this reunion page if we all gave our names and addies online. That's what reunions are all about.

I can imagine a reunion - would be ok in real life. Course, I'd check out some Ukie food.

As it ends, "Without You" by Harry Nillson would be playing. Ladies choice, and I ain't picked for the slow dance. The girl I really wanted to see didn't make it.

It's cool - gonna go check out the Northley / Sun Valey reunion in Aston.

One girl does give me a Winston. Thanks, and I do remember you. 'See ya next year, LORD willing'.

Northley and Sun Valley are both dark now.

But, it's OK, I"ll soon be back in Brookhaven. I'm home.

To one an all, be well, and enjoy. It'll be alright.

Damn, Long John Wade is playing "Precious and Few" by Climax on WIBG 99 now - I can't stop crying.

Donna Cello? She was a cute blonde, and probably still is.

Kinda hard to believe it has been 40 years, next month, when JFK was assassinated. Any recollections?

I was in kindergarten, Mrs. Miller's afternoon class at Thomas Coeburn Elementary in Brookhaven. So, my mom picks me up, and is crying. That was the first time I saw her cry. She said, 'they shot th President". I had no idea.

So, we get home and there was no 'Sally Starr & Popeye Theatre' on Channel 6 WFIL. I thought that is why she was crying - all news, no Sally.

I heard Sally on the Vineland NJ radio station in 1998. Love to 'our gal Sal"!

Eighth grade graduation was in 1955 for me. Some of my children attended HGS as well. Billy Churchman's mom and my mom were good friends; as was Jerry Szelak's mom. It's good to be able to recall similarities and remember old friends. BTW Sr. Christine was there when I went to school, too. I daresay that anyone who went to HGS must have felt her wrath.

WOW...

First time reading this site! My son Michael (who ives in Indiana) found it and e-mailed it to me. For those of you young folks, I went to Holy Ghost School from the 1st to 5th grade between (Ready for this??) 1941 and 1945! I lived on 3rd street between Booth and Trainer sts, and later (at age 15) moved to 6th and Highland. Joe Battle (former Mayor of Chester and later Judge in Media) was my best pal in my teen-age years. I was an alter boy, an usher, sang in the choir (we used to have great choirs back then) and was active in the Ukrainian "Hall" (UCACS) at 2nd and Thurlow sts. I particularly enjoyed reading the e-mail from Maria (Zbyr) Constantine, as her Father (Fr. Nicholas Zbyr) was my favorite all time priest. He married us in 1958 (and we're STILL married!). I remember Maria and Orest as little tots, running around the house as we ushers counted the collections after church every Sunday. My wife and myself (with Fr. Revak) ran teen-age dances every Sunday night in the Ukrainian Hall at 2nd and Thurlow. My Dad was very active in the church - He was a Cantor at Holy Ghost for a few years, and a Cantor at St. Nicholas in Wilmington for over 30 years. I think he sang at almost every Ukrainian Wedding and Funeral in the tri-county area for 40 years. He died at age 89 in October of 2000.

Just wanted to inject a few words about my years in Chester and at Holy Ghost. Feel free to e-mail me if you remember me or my Dad or any of the stuff that went on 30 or 40 (or 50) years ago.

Whew, what a summer. We haven't had a drop of rain for months. Terrifying. A giant tinder-box of fir and spruce. But it smells wonderful in the morning dew.

After my academic gig was over we split and stacked five cords (15-20 tons wet; will dry down to about ten) of wood. Got another on the ground, waiting. Getting ready for winter. Making tinder and kindling are next. Feels good to swing an axe again but DANG it's hot.

In Wisconsin we'd make firewood for the next year in midwinter--0 to 30 below--because there weren't many other farm chores you could do in that weather! After about ten minutes, you'd strip down to a workshirt and work pants, and not feel the cold at all. THAT's the weather to fell, skid, buck, and split wood in!

Peter Kaczmar--now there's somebody I wouldn't mind hearing news about. He was a sweet guy, in my experience of him, and my favorite (of many) crushes at the time. I hope life has been good to him.

I'm sorry to hear about George's mother.

Like I said, my tastes shifted to world music in the 80s. I liked political punk, still do. But I was corrupted by the sounds and rhythms of world music.

I danced with an African drum and dance group in Madison for ten years; haven't found anything like it on the West Coast. Though we have some nice community drum-and-dance groups here. Always somebody making music for free.

I've been hanging with the Celtic seisun (session) at a local pub on Wed. nights, but I play Celtic harp, which is NOT a session instrument. In San Francisco I heard folks who'd amp up their harps and add bits of metal, etc., and play them as percussion as well as string instruments. Amazing.

We stopped at a tiny Russian cafe in Seattle recently. Wanted to take some of their frozen homemade pierogis home, but the day was too hot. And I'd've been disappointed in the taste and texture anyway; I got spoiled by Bill's mom's (and others').

Though onions fried golden brown in butter and pepper have a way of leveling memory. Hoo ha. Hey, gimme a bowl of that, and I'll make potato balls and just throw 'em at passersby. POTATO BALL FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! <thwappp>

Man Bill, Tony Triboletti died? He was cool, and yeah, Lenny Bera.

I heard from Pete Kaczmar in 1990 when my mom died.

1983 for Gloria? I thought it earlier, but it is bad, nonetheless.

I remembeer those days really as fun. We had good childhoods there, despite some of the crazy stuff LOL.

Is yer dad still alive? Glad to hear about yer mum, as, I would go drastic for an HG pyrohi.

Yo George.....We were in the same class together.I left there in 4th grade and went to public school and thats probably the last time I saw you. We hung around with each other.Yeah....unfortunately my sister did get killed in a car accident in 1983.This site is kinda neat for a Holy Ghost thing. I just checked it out yesterday, but put in my wrong e-mail address.I don't really remember many people from those days, except you and Tony Trippoletti and he died a few years ago.I ran into Lenny Berra a couple years ago and he still recognized me.....that was really wild!My mom is still on the Pyrogie making team at the church.I live about 40 miles down the road from there.Do you know anyone else from our age group from HG?

Yer dad was always nice at church. And I remember your sister, Gloria, a very nice looking blonde, who, the way I remember, had an eternal tan. If memory serves me right, didn't she unfortunately pass on in a car wreck, a long time ago?

Yeah, we had, what, Mrs. Steciw (VERY COOL), Sister Rafael for first communion iin 1966, and then Sister Philomena in the third grade for them years, right?

Those were the fun days?

Amazing what the Karlsen took wiith him after Holy Ghost School - loud rock n roll, Cramps, Damned, Dead Boys, Pistols, Mutabaruka, MOTORHEAD!

He thought 'Non Alignment Pact' by "Pere Ubu" is great music.

He even got a bottle thrown at him at Johnny Thunders & Heartbreakers show. It was either London or NYC, he forgets....

That boy ain't no good, and an ex-altar boy, to boot!

Now he is sittinng here listening to The WHO "Sell Out' with the first track, 'Armenia City In The Sky' blaring.

Foolish waste....

Hey, G--

No, it wasn't me in the red dress--I was in fact wearing a tapestry blazer, GV wide-wale cords, and riding boots. I'd just gotten back from giving a paper at an academic conference. Her FM shoes--um, well, that's better explained in an e-mail.

The IGC address goes back a ways--EcoNet was my first (personal) ISP, in the late 80s.

Actually, my ancestors are Finnish, sailed from Denmark for the New World in 1652 then intermarried with so many Swedes there along the Delaware, I look like one. Finns spent most of their time trying to keep from getting invaded by Sweden and Russia. Compared to that--as the saying goes--designing really cool glassware is a cinch.

Hm. What else? Not much. This week is devoted to way too many social things, plus a final exam in an intense course I'm taking. So I won't be checking back in for awhile.

Suicide--80s? CBGB? I think so--did some collaborative work with Richard Hell? A mind-bending cover of "96 Tears"? Or am I misattributing?

Lately I've been listening to a lot of 80s and 90s Bad Religion, though my pard's favorite is The Offspring and the DKs. I didn't realize Bad Religion was still together and touring till last year. Mostly I listen to global and AfroPop.

I was living in San Francisco during the coup (12/2000), and Jello was all over the place, just plain screaming. Some days (as Emo Phillips says) it's just not worth chewing through the straps.

Other days it is.

The Niagara Falls Spinning Restaurant Episode (1972) involved the waiter coming over after the meal and saying something to which George responded--wide eyed and with huge enthusiasm--"Oh yeah! I would!" Then looking around with great excitement and anticipation.

The rest of us at the table couldn't understand what was so exciting about the waiter asking whether we wanted separate checks. Someone asked GK this, and his crestfallen reply was:

"Separate checks? Oh. I thought he asked me if I wanted a coupla chicks."

I wouldn't call it snotty, George--just the kind of thing a 13-year-old boy might say while on a footloose and fancy free Holy Ghost bus tour to Ontario's tourist capital with Mother Myron chaperoning. :^D

I don't as a rule go to reunions--at this point I've got too many schools under my belt to consider it. Besides, the last one I attended (10th high school reunion, talked into it by a good friend) was utterly depressing. The girls had all become their mothers (except for three of us), and the guys spent the night hanging their bellies over the cash bar and leering at the one of us wearing the short tight red dress and red FM shoes. Nobody wanted to dance. The food was awful. Etc. It was like falling into a vat of very old and wet white bread.

But I always enjoy hearing from folks, not in the spirit of nostalgia (which I think stinks), but rather people piecing together their personal histories, honestly and candidly.

I wouldn't be a teenager or twentysomething person again for all the dark chocolate in Belgium. In fact I'm looking forward to 50--life keeps getting better. I'f I'd known it'd be like this, I'd've run away at age 7. :^D

I could hardly read about George Karlsen thinking I was one of the Cool Girls. Whom he had a crush on. And not reply. :^D

I have no idea how I found my way here! But I am glad to see that other Holy Ghosters (or as Linda Whalen called us, "Sanctified Spooks") from the Class of '72 survived. I have just one thing to say:

!!!!!!POTATO BALL FIGHT!!!!!!!

I can detail "life since then" another time. Some thoughts:

Mrs. Duchak, making us write science "literature searches" that were in fact torture sessions via rote copying of pounds of crap wholesale out of our textbook. To this day, when I hear the words "Sir Isaac Newton," my left hand goes into a full cramp.

Sr. Myron—an odd combination of bitchin’ babe and truly troubled sadist. Little Sr. Sophie, cringing at Sr. Myron’s outbursts…and then passing the aggression along to the tiny kids.

The trip to Niagara Falls, the Corning plant, and the Little League Hall of Fame (snore). Dinner at that Space Needly spinning restaurant, where the waiter came over and said something to George in heavily French-accented English…and George’s reply. (Bwahahaha--I am the Queen of Memory!)

Hurricane Agnes and the flooding of the school, and a bunch of us rushing to try to help mop up before damage happened. Scary; it destroyed Eyre Park and flooded parts of Sun Village (my 'hood).

That show where Sr. Myron choreographed galumphing movements to Broadway songs. I still have the godawful blue milkmaid-looking nightgown-horror-thing I had to wear. Klumping around to "Oh What a Beautiful Morning" with Cheryl Cullen, Susan Moseley, and I think Cheryl McDonald. Her twin sister Renee was cast as a cowgirl.

My theory: if you put teenage girls in powder blue ruffled nightgowns and make them gallop around in public to off-key songs from "Oklahoma!", at least 1 in 4 will eventually turn up in black leather, astride a sportbike, doing 130 mph in the Napa valley on a 115-degree July day. Just a hunch, based on a sample of one.

The sign over the kitchen with the prices, including for "Cancer sticks." Yummy fabulous wonderful pierogis...freshly made with our own fingerprints in them. Rolling potato balls. One for the bowl, one for me, one for the bowl, one for me.

Me, winning the Science Fair with my fabulous papier mache brain model!! :^D

David George, getting into 57 varieties of trouble, and Sr. Myron, chopping the boys' hair before the class photos. I also still have the hideous pale blue brocade "graduation dress" we had to wear. Gack.

Those hideous gym suits that made everybody look like giant blue yams.

Standing up each time somebody came into the classroom and saying "Christ is risen" in Ukrainian. Learning to pray and sing in transliterated Uky.

Stephen Sharkey, Alex whose last name I forget, beautiful-Southern-voiced Troy Pace. Peter Kaczmar (he was so sweet), Dino Cellini, and Roman Hrabowyj. I remember Jenny Lybush, Susan Beaver, Julie Coryell/Parker, and Debbie Selner. Cathy Brush, Linda Whalen, Vera Branchek.

Wasn’t Cindy Harpster in our class? I was in first grade with her in Sun Village. George mentioned Terry Moore, whom I also went to grade school with at Jefferis…but really, was she at HG? Gosh. I’ve got my years and schools all mixed up.

I remember some of the younger people too because I sold candy in the lunchroom/auditorium.

For punk in the Pacific Northwest, check out http://www.seattlepunk.net/ The alternative newsweekly /The Stranger/ (www.thestranger.com) is a good resource for concerts, including on the dry side.

George, my sister-in-law is an animal control officer in Wenatchee; she lives in Entiat.

Might as well get more into the "whatever happend to" mode one more time.

It's 43 degrees and sunny here in the North West. Hey! I wish we had some of your snow today!

Linda Disciascio was in the 8th grade HG class of 1971-72. She was so cool. I had this crush on her, that reduced me to mostly talking like a nervous Ralph Kramden "Hamina hamina hamina..." Sheesh! I was pathetic.

I remember before the '72class trip to Niagara Falls, the girls had to wear street clothes, to clean off thier uniforms.

So Linda D, you come in in a sizzler skirt, white flowered, with yer purple strap heels. You were a knockout! You got yelled at by Myron also - KEWEL!

How ya been doing Linda? Would like to just hear a hello from you. Hope yer well also. Not trying to embarass you, but those are fun memories.

By the way, it gets to 108 here in the summer, and that is when I do miss the Delaware Valley. Along with Pyrohi, Hoagies, Tasykake, green soda...

You PA folks do have it made.

Boy, that is right, Carolyn Lewis, you are a nice looking lady. You came to HG a year after I graduated.

I was checking out that classmaes.com site. I saw a classmate from back then - Linda Nasko.

First Linda, you got some fine looking boys there. Should I say men? BIG DUDES, yeah?

I remember way back when Linda - 7th grade 1970 - 71. Got a whole buncha cool girls new that year. You, Terry Moore, Debbie Selner, Michele Sinex, Cathy Brush, Doreen Goodman, Anitra Treese. (Sorry if spelling is off).

So, seems life has been good to ya Linda. How about the rest of you'se? Would be cool to hear about what has happened in 30 years, and they were fun years then.

Me? I went to NJ and became a beach bum, then travelled.

But, I'm still goofy, and crazy after all these years.

Best wishes to you all.

Hi - How was everybody's week? Moe - I absolutely agree with you. We have NO one else to answer to except God. I also work very hard to take care of my business and I always ask myself "What would Jesus do?" whenever I get myself into a situation. We must have faith in our young for one thing and we MUST always keep our faith in ourselves.

Cool deal Moe. I love's the spaghetti!

I don't see me in the area soon. However, I see the photos on the church page, and it is a beautiful building.

St Nick also? LOL, when Fr. Lypyn did it for us, I always got coal. Of course, he gave us the candy bar later.

Wonder how coal and spaghetti is? Oh nevermind ...

Have a good one

George,

We just had a spaghetti dinner for the kids w/St. Nicholas - we weren't sure how it would go off as we usually have Chicken Dinners - it was a great sucess - the kids had a blast as did the parents & grandparents. We try to have a least coffed and cake availabe after both liturgies every Sunday and at least once a month have a dinner - We just hosted a Yalanka (sorry about the spelling) two weeks ago. Hopefully we will be having something soon. Everyone seems to enjoy coming and it makes a little bit of money for the Church. Next time you are in the area you should try to stop by. Holy Ghost has got to be one of the most beautiful Churches in the Tri-State area.

Hi! I am a current pashioner at Holy Ghost and was reading some entries from last week. It is true that some people have a bad attitude and bad mouth others, but you find that in every organziation, unfortnatuely it is a part of human nature. To be honest though most of the young people in our parish are quite nice and do want to help out. You have to understand something - we are dealing with years of bad management and certain groups use to the status quo. As I tell Fr. Butnik - change is difficult and painfull. If you truly love your Church and your hertiage - you do what you know to be right and you get the job done. I personally don't care what other people think of me. The only people I have to answer to is myself and my God.

Things are changing for the better. Father has been a lightening rod for us. The younger people in the parish are starting to become more involved. If you've been thinking of coming back stop by one Sunday - you may be surprised. Things are not perfect (and they never will be). They are only as good as we make them.

YOU KNOW YOU'RE FROM PENNSYLVANIA WHEN........ (we're cool)

1."Hey youz guyz" is your standard greeting, and it's politically correct for all sexes. 2. The first day of Buck season and the first day of Doe season are school holidays 3 One of the highlights of your life was a field trip to Penn's cave and Horseshoe curve. 4. You know exactly what to do when your mother tells you to "red up "your room. 5. You know the time and location of every "wing night" in a 20 mile radius. 6. You don't think people from Philly or Pittsburgh talk funny. 7. You don't understand what all the hype is about for Yeungling or Rolling Rock beer, you've been drinking it for years even though Iron City is cheaper. 8. You consider an exotic vacation, a trip to the Jersey shore. 9.You are over 35 yrs. old, have never been outside of Pennsylvania anddon't see any need to leave. 10. You own only three spices "salt, pepper and Heinz "ketchup". 11. You consider Pittsburgh to be "out west," and you know the fastest way to Philly is the Turnpike.

There is a new priest at Holy Ghost church and he is married with a daughter. I understand the last married priest was Fr. Zbyr who was before my time. At present the church is financially struggling due to mismanagment of funds. Maybe a reunion in the ewmodeled church hall formerly the basement could work.

Well I never did finish Holy Ghost I left in 6th grade. But, still attended Sunday mass w/ my Grandfather after I left. I would have to say my favorite memory about Holy Ghost would have to be perogies on Fridays and asking Mrs Mary if she had a Quarter and seeing my Grandmother there (Martha Salo) even though I saw her after school since she watched me there was something about seeing her at school and going to chruch w/my Grandfather (Matthew Salo) that would have to be one of my fondest memories of him Sunday Mass. Even though I did not finish like alot of you (I left in 84) I sill loved my time there and will never forget that school.I am sorry to say I do not attend Mass there anymore the only time I get back is for my Grandparents masses on the Birthdays. But there will always be something special about that school.I am now the proud mother of 3 children Hannah 4 Morgan 2 and my son Hayden 8 months. And a wonderful Husband Stephen.

Hello Everyone. I, too, came upon this site by chance and it has warmed my heart. What memories! As you old timers, like Bobby Felix, know, my father, Rev. Nicholas Zbyr built Holy Ghost Church and new school. He loved the parish and we all helped him (my mother, sister Thaissa, grandma Minchia, brother Orest). My father passed away in 1963 in Philadelphia; mother died in 1993 of cancer; sister Thaissa died in 1999 of stroke. Orest is living in Philadelphia and I am in Monterey, California. I've been back a few times last year and the year before. Everything seems to small, but being inside the church takes my breath away. I spent so much time in church helping my dad. I was even an altar girl during the summer months when he and I were often the only ones in church and I would stand near him and do the responses while he said the mass. I've missed him so much all these years. His assistant priests were Father Revak and Father Myron Kosmowsky, Father Zrada, and others I don't remember. I'm happy for the updates from those of you who know what happened to some of the folks. Bobby Felix, I used to have a crush on you when I was a little kid. You had the cutest dog - Buttons - and your parents were sweet. We used to shop all the time at Matys' grocery store. They made the best hoagies in the world! Listen, folks, I could go on and on and probably write a whole history of the place. I do have some photographs stored somewhere of school photos on the church steps, of the groundbreaking for the new church, and, I think, of the schools, old and new, but I've moved so much that I don't know where they are, but I'll try to find them.

About myself, I left Chester in 1959 and finished the 8th grade in Philadelphia. Did my high school and college studies in Philly as well, getting a masters in French literature. I then joined the U.S. Air Force and just retired in January 2002. The Air Force was very good to me. I met my husband while in the service, we travelled all over the world, have two great children (both in college), and I just began working for the Federal Government as a civilian.

I'll quit now, because I don't know how many of you except for Bobby Felix really remember the "old" days, but if you want to contact me, please feel free.

This has been a lovely time to reminisce a bit. I wish all of you happy thoughts and fond memories. Take care, Maria.

I went to Holy Ghost in 1976-1977 (6th grade) with Mrs.Duchak, & 1977-1978 (7th grade) with Mrs.Garvine. My parents moved to San Diego, California after my 7th grade year, & I moved up to San Francisco to go to college. I am a junior high school teacher at a Catholic school 10 minutes north of Stanford University. I teach Literature & English to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. I would love to hear from anyone from my classes as I have great memories of my short time at Holy Ghost. In fact, I have diaries from my time there & will post some or the more exciting entries when I have time. I just found out about this site tonight and I am writing to you all instead of doing my progress reports! It sounds as if people are confessing things here, so I will too. If anyone remembers the fork incident from the cafeteria, I was to blame. Yes, I have carried the guilt for all of these years. I have always loved my old friend Beth Hall for not snitching, as she was with me when I bent it while we were cleaning the cafeteria. The seventh grade was rounded up & we were interrogated by the principal (I think it was Sister Myron?) and I thought I would die of fright. I was so scared I couldn't speak even if I had wanted to speak. Beth, bless your heart for not telling! I remember Kim Yeager doing multiple backflips in the cafeteria. The birthday party at Beth's house where we all fanned out into the woods and kissed behind trees. David Birney, my hero all these years, who when Mrs.Duchak said to someone "Stop parading around" stood up and with a short burst of song pretended to lead a marching band. I can't remember whether I saw the priest who liked Peter Frampton throw someone & his desk out the window or if we talked about it enough to make it seem real. There was another priest, older, who kept beehives on the side of the church. I remember Mrs.Duchak telling us to go home & put hot burning soup on our tongues so that we would know what it was like to burn in hell, as that's where we were going. Marching up & down the stairs until we did it silently (do I do that to my own students?) Things are a lot different in schools nowadays. Teacher's wigs blowing off (did we imagine it?) Mrs.Duchak's dog Ukey & her bringing him to the picnic where she seemed relaxed, casual, and friendly. We all had helmet hair in the 70's...I am looking at our class pic right now. Steven Kurych, are you out there? Mike Lojan, how did you end up in Colorado? Joey Szupa used to make us laugh all the time. I am so happy to find this site. Write me if you have time anybody.

Seems there is not much mention of Fr. Lypyn.

Man, that dude was great!

He kept things going good, but, some people didn't like him. I did.

He became a monsignor and died in '84 I think.

Remember how he made ya hold your finger out, and then he would snap the strap on it? It never hurt, but it was scary, at the time.

Then when he dressed up like St. Nicholas (that's a German thing). I got coal every year. He gave us the candy bars anyway. Of course, we ate the candy. My mom got uspet and cried one year, 'INSULTED' that I got coal. Parents just don't understand eh?

Vichnaya pamyat Peter Lypyn.

Klickers!

While scrolling down the page, Kathy P mentions 'clickers'. I remember them! They were like, 15 cents. I think they also called them 'crickets'.

The nuns would use them as a signal for when to stand, knell, sit, during the service. Up, down, this , that, yadda yadda yadda.

Ok, so does anyone remember the film "Heaven Can Wait"? Donald Sutherland was in it. I don't remember who else. It was a band of rebellious kids, in a Brooklyn catholic school in the 60's.

In the movie, the guys got some 'clickers' going off in the service @ all crazy times. Kneeling, sitting, etc... in confusion, real fast.

Imagine if we had them when Ambrose Synyshyn, the Arch-Bishop would come?

I wish I thought of that then!

You said that they were thinking of gambling near / in Chester. Atlantic City had it, and it was not good.

Wildwood was cool. I was mentioning though, that I lived near / was influenced by the 'gambling' environment.

Hope Chester don't do it (gamble).

Imagine 30 years ago... I graduated Holy Ghost. It don't seem that long.

I lived in Brookhaven, but went to 7th St. (grandma's house) every Sunday.

Weekly as a kid to Chester. High school years, visited to Chester and Philly a lot.

Gambling and motels? Horrible. Atlantic City got ruined. I lived on LBI from 77 - 92.

Glad it is quiet.

She is in the Fox Chase area the last I heard. No write up in the Ukrainian paper indicating she has expired yet. Allegedly, Barbara Rivera, the priest' secretary claims all the class pictures perrished in a fire in the school. I can can't believe they all did!Not many kids I went to HG with even go to chrch there any more.I don't know how long it will remain open. Great memories David, also erasing around your desk with a pen eraser, clapping the erasers, watching to see if the intercom red light was on, class pictures in the hallway, washing the tables in the cafeteria, kneeling on the floor to see if the uniform touched the floor or it was considered too short, boys hair not touching their white color or it was too long hippy style. May concerts and processions, walking down third street and stopping traffic to get to mass.

Class of 1977 - One of the weirdest memories was being designated #38 by Sr Ignatius in 1st Gr. I guess there were too many of us for her to remember by name - and I was only letter "K"! Must have been 60 of us. That, and her formidable plastic whip. I always remember liking the new school bldg because it felt new and 60s modern, which I guess it was - the cornestone said 1962? Also - my daughter's last day of school last week reminded me of that inane custom of having to sandpaper the edges of textbooks at the end of the year to make them look like new again - some wasted energy there!Great site - would like to see more comments. After Bobby Felix, I must be the oldest Alumna from Holy Ghost School and up til a few yrs ago, the most active parishioner after Mrs. Wozny, Churchman, Wenchak, Salo, Mudrick,Mrs Steciw, Rivera Nazar, etc... and if you ever go to Holy Ghost functions you'll see the hard working ladies and just a few of the dedicated men left... Just go to the Stations or Holy Thursday or Good Friday to see who is able to walk around the Church...or read the bulletin to see what they have to do that night in Church... We had 2 different days for Stations One in English the other in Ukrainian ........now all they can do is group the both together... if there's a couple of Uke's Fr will have half the stations in English and half in Ukie... Fr Revak is still alive. We all have stories about the school... I'm glad I had Sr. Andrea and Sr. Lawrence and the most wonderful Pastor in the world Fr. Zbyr.....

The teacher in the VW was Mrs. Culbert. The strawberry blond was Miss Senora. Sister Myron was a tyrant. Everyone thought I was a little brown noser, but truthfully I was terrified of that woman. Seems years later she developed a cancerous tumor that caused her to first lose her sight and then her life. I wonder if it hadn't been growing all along & made her as cranky as she was. Frannie (Curtis) Garvine was always nice to me, but do you remember her old "helmet-head" hairdo? She finally modernized it when she took the class trip to Florida. Does anyone remember the time Mrs. Duchak's hair took on a green tint from a bad dye job? Holy Ghost was some place! every now & then I run into some old classmate. I wasn't catholic or Ukrainian, but I loved the language & studied a little in college. I'm sorry to see the old school is gone.

I certainly remember the clickers. They were everywhere! Any altar boys out there? Serving mass was a cool experience for me. Didn't like getting up that early in the morning, and still don't. Father Sagan used to pay us 50 cents per day for serving mass during the summer. First jobs for most people!!

I'm a '69 graduate, although I only went to Holy Ghost for 2 years. I actually kinda enjoyed the place. The school work wasn't too hard and I remember always getting out of class to run errands for Mother Myron. She was a holy terror, but overall I got along with her ok. Made some good friends there: Walter Wolansky, Bob D'Amato, Mike Rudnitsky. Also remember playing "spin the bottle" at Daria's, and making out in Gloria Luzinski's basement with Donna Cello. Boy, those were the good old days. I drove by Holy Ghost in '99 on my way to NY and saw the school had closed. What happened. Last but not least, Diana Mangiapani, I'm back from Australia, I can be reached at my AOL email address now!

Have to get them scanned and see if there is some way we can post them here. And yes I do remember Father Sagan, but not Revak. I graduated ten years after you did. Just came upon the old chester site. I read the other comments about Holy Ghost School. Certainly brings back alot of memories. I finished 8 years in 1966. Had 4 years in the "old" school, and 4 in the new building. So that was a long time ago. I'll have to dig out my picture of my 8th grade class. There were 19 of us. I see Joe Komanowsky once in awhile. He lives next door to my Mom. Great information on this site.

I too remember Mother Myron! I saw her name mentioned many times. Did anyone remember Father Sagan or Father Revak (sp). Both are deceased I believe. I do remember Fr Zbry (sp). We lived one block from the school on 3rd street. I used to play with his son Orest. Alot of fun back then!!

Miss Duchak? Pani Mahalew? Mrs Kobryn? Father Lypyn? Peeling potatoes and Onions? Washing the cafeteria tables? Having to use a eraser around your desk to remove scuff marks? Gym in the old school? when Pizza was a slice of break with cheese? Fundraisers? Class pictures? Taras Shevchenko concerts? Class trips to Washington, Florida? Clickers used to tell you to sit, stand or kneel. The paddle in Sister Myron's office? Boys hair cuts for $1.50, uniforms that must touch the floor when you kneel?

Jim Babenko - Yeah you were cool from Toby Farms. I remember Lynne Clements from there also - so how is life?

Think of the legacy Myron, and those crazies, left behind- not good. Betcha' they never thought we would be exposing the nonsense for the world to see on the WWW!

I think the teacher that drove the VW was Helen O'Donnell? She had bad skin, straw blonde hair, and was terrible to me, always making mountains out of molehills. She got married back then, wonder how long that lasted?

Her sister, Virginia O'Donnel, was way too cool. Sexy cute red head, beautiful, with great legs. The guy who got her must have been blessed. Miss V O'Donnell couldn't straighten her arms totally due to an accident. You couldn't notice, she told us. Miss Virginia YOU are a happy memory from those years.

Duchak? Huh Bouy.... there's a nasty nasty one. Always pinched her chin with her 2 fingers, like in the war pictures.

Franny Curtis Garvan used to be Myron's little snitch. Such a 'church lady" eh?

Again, look at the legacy they left.

Jim I forgot about the bus incident out the back door, last day of school, June 72. LOL. I saw Mrs. Steciw in 1990 when my mom died. I tell you, Mrs. Steciw was a truly nice lady. I wish her the best also.

Well, lets see now, Holy Ghost! Those were some interesting years! Went there for 8 years, getting paroled in 1974! Ha! Seriously though, I look back on those years quite fondly. Yes, it is true, Mother Myron was indeed a terror, but we all survived it. I remember being dragged around by my earlobes more than once by our dear Mother! I got plenty of other memories I'd like to post on here, but for now I'll just try and recall some of the teachers during my stay there. Any members of the class of '74 correct me if I'm wrong. Grades 1 and 2 I really can't remember right now. 3rd grade was Miss Rim, 4th was Sister Sophie (very nice), 5th was a dude named Mr. Bernardo, or something like that(strange guy), he was replaced midyear by a very cool teacher, and I forget her name, but remember her driving a volkswagen! 6th was Mrs. Duchak(remember all the reports due!) 7th was Miss Curtis(very cool)and 8th was Mother Myron!! She was actually much nicer as a teacher than she was as a principal. Anyway, I think this site is pretty cool, always fun to go down memory lane! Oh, and Carlson, I remember you taking off out the back door of the bus on the last day of school one year! Poor Mr. Steciew! Ha! Be well all!

Now I was always told nuns were the brides of Christ! Well this woman must have been the bride of SATIN! The things I seen this woman do to kids were sheer abuse. I seen her grab a kid by each ear and smash his head on the black board, I also seen her BEAT a girl all the way to church on a holy day, The girl was not sure why we were going to church and asked why and that is what she got! SORRY this woman did not belong around children! I think and wonder to this day why she had to be so angry and hatefull. I'll never forget her I hope now she is sorry for how un happy she made so many kids. Hey if you want to send me hate mail fine! BUT that nun was EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
