I have a great recipe from an old co-worker that is Polish. I made them a couple of times .(boy what a job....lol) and have had them from various places. The best place I had them was from Daria's & Maries at Booth Corner, but they aren't there any more. I also had them from the other bakery there, but didn't prefer them. I also had them from KYJ's and the cheese ones were just that (stuffed with cheese). I've found a few places on the internet to buy them from. I haven't found anyone local that makes them. Does anyone know of a place local?

Hi Kim the pierogies won't be going back on sale until I believe February. There is a sign at church, so when I go next Sunday I will check the date again for you. The pictures you have can be sent to the webmaster at the top of this page. All you have to do is hit the click here and it will connect directly to his email address. I have submitted pictures to him before and he is good about getting them up. Talk to you later.

Hi my brother (Steve Wolfe) and I went to Holy Ghost when Mother Myron (after that Mother Theresa) were principles there. I remember Father Lypton, I can't remember the younger priests name. I do have some pictures if you can let me know how/where/who to send them to. They are of the May precession when I was in 8th grade. I only remember a few names of my classmates at the time. Was around 1977. I also would like information about buying pierogies. And would love to spread the news about them being sold there. Thanks,

Hey Mike, I grew up in the Gardens too. Were you one of the Nardone's that was on Honan St. I lived on Boyle and was actually friends with George Nardone. I used to hang out with Nancy Townsend (one of the McCloskey's granddaughters.). I know you were older than me, you would've known my sister's or brother. I have lots of memories from around there! LOL! Just curious if you were one of the Nardone's that lived next to Wetzel's. TTYL

Dear Linda: As John has posted on our Guestbook, George contributed to this site over the years and I believe enjoyed when people related to his memories. We here at oldchester grow to enjoy and think of our posters as friends, George will be missed, but will be remembered when someone happens upon his memories of Chester and Holy Ghost past....He was called to God on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Sorrows. May her gentle arms hold him close and may he rest in peace.

Yesterday, George Karlsen passed away in Wenachee, Washington at age 47. George had been fighting heart disease for the past few years, and he died from a fatal heart attack. For those of you who have read through the pages of this site, you will recognize George's many posts, and many memories. He really had a great memory, and at heart really loved those memories. I recently went to the Holy Ghost breakfast reunion after Mass, and I couldn't wait to get home to email him about the many faces and renewed contacts. George was an only child, and both of his parents passed away relatively early in his life. Although his family was small, he met many friends along the way. He always found a way to make someone lauugh. And he would be happy for just doing that. As a cousin, he was the best. He was kind, giving and alwyas willing to listen. He will be missed. Signing off for you "G the K"......

I only attended Holy Ghost for 1 year. Kindergarden 75-76. Mrs Kourage(sp?) was my teacher. I remember walking to church, playing in a nearby park (or field), going to school all day when some kids only went half, the smell of inscense (sp?) in church and being afraid to cough because it was so quiet, being sent to the principals office for some reason and some older kids asking me where I was going when I told them they said I was going to get hit with the paddle (I never did), making a girl i was friends with sick because i told her cherry kool-aid mixed with milk made strawberry milk and she drank it (I'm very sorry!), my cousin and I stealing the other kids snacks out of their lunch when we went into the coatroom (again, sorry), participating in a bicentennial celebration and having to learn all the words to America the Beautiful and God Bless America, learning to read with Dick and Jane, waiting for the bus in the school yard, remember thinking Mrs. Kourage was mean for marking an answer on my test wrong because of course the square looked better half yellow and half green instead of all green, and Kindergarden graduation. I went to the penny parties Holy Ghost had a few times after that. Thanks for the memories!

Please end this back and forth as to a name or no name. Its a waste of time, and expensive. Space at oldchesterpa is free to all schools yet must be paid for by the webmaster. It is very time consuming for John and his volunteers to constantly watch these school pages for Spam, let alone in house bickering or near bickering. If we were to add a password sign-in section to every school page the page would lose the spontaneity of some people that enjoy visiting and posting but prefer being anonymous. I am guilty of adding the obit below without putting in my name. So I as a volunteer on this site am guilty of what many others do. Lets move on to bigger and better things. Think about coming to our oldchester reunion in October and bring some of the many old pictures you have of your church and school. Wouldn't it be lovely to share a photo page thru this site of your beautiful parish. Look how much we have all enjoyed the sharing of the pictures people have added so far and I am sure we all can agree that the memories that have been added here touch some small corner in our hearts. So lets move on and give the heart more memories to hold dear.

As I sign off I do have to think that you can get another address at many free services - Yahoo, Hotmail, Excite. And what kind of nasty letters did this poster get? My friend never did and he was the most controversial it seems on this page. He is not interested you are right from talking with no namers. I mention the page goings on and am politely ignored in response. This page should have some dignity. What makes me angry is I moved out of Chester at a young age and would like to perhaps have the opportunity to be reminded of a friends name perhaps. Spam is easy to deal with. If you don't recognize a name then delete it. TY to Mary for the nice letters. I hope you and your group are all fine. Good night.

and your last name is? and you reside where? and your personal info is? Some things are best kept private, if you want to leave all your info than go right ahead, I personally do not need any more spam, virus', or emails from nasty people. If you want to share on the website then please do, but don't make other people do what they don't want too or they will leave too along with Mr. Karlsen, he no longer posts here and he was full of good information. So lets get off to a fresh start and keep this page as it was intended to be used for, and just keep the memories going...

I see that on the St Hedwig page there was a problem with some false insulting posts by a Mr Dan Dan. The solution offered was that there be a registration ad password for the site. I also notice this on the cover page. I think this should be for all the oldchesterpa pages. This would put an end to some of the games that has beset this page for instance and would make the oldchester site much more professional. That way we could all get to know one another on a personal basis. This whole thing about being anonymous and afraid is something that should not belong on a wonderful site like this. Thank you.

Greetings to all! HG grad of 1968. I also taught at HG from Sept. 72 to June 73. I've been married for 32 yrs and have 2 beautiful daughters, Adria and Lauren. Can't say I mind living in the OC. The weather is ideal. I work for an agency under the Dept of Defense called Defense Criminal Investigative Service. I have many wonderful memories of HG. I can't remember all the teachers I had, but I do remember Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Duchak, and Miss Sheeky. Remember Father Zbyr (great man) and Father Lypyn. I wasn't able to make the last reunion, but am hoping to make the next one. Michael Hrischuk - not sure if you remember me. Your brother, Eugene, was an usher in my wedding.

Mary no need to apologize. I have two friends who have left Yahoo and today I am not going to sign in to my tiger_kat e mail anymore. I have a friend that is teaching me a lot about what goes on on line. My space is only acccessable through the parent company Yahoo. Netscape was against Miscrosoft years ago and now they are both friends with AOL. Google is very bad as they do not take you to popular sites rather to ones they want you to buy from. It would be better to post things here on our Chester page for us all to see. Thank you for the great pictures.

Cat the website I'm setting up isn't on Yahoo,it is actually through a website called My Space. Try going to www.myspace.com and then go to groups. There will be a thing on there that you can type Holy Ghost Ukies and it will take you directly to the page. You shouldn't get a black screen at all, the only thing that has a black screen is my actual personal profile. You can try going through that as well. When you go onto my profile it has a spot that says my groups on it. Just click on the name for the Holy Ghost group and that should get you there as well. It does have a tendency to run slow once in awhile. Thank you Laryssa for the kind words. I'm very excited about Sunday! I just wanted to start posting on here to let everyone know that "Yes" Holy Ghost is still thriving and it's getting better all of the time!

[Editor's Note: Mary, I'm posting the direct link here that should take folks right to your group page. - John]

Mary The Holy Ghost Ukies page is not loading up. I did get the black background you had once. Then that disappeared and now the page has been spinning trying to load for the last twenty minutes. You may want to check with Yahoo. Is this because I am on a proxy server? Yahoo is very bad and frustrating anymore. Good luck I might check back later on.

Thank you very much for the birthday wishes, Cat. I've enjoyed reading your, Mary's and Carole's e-mails recently. Congratulations to Mary's little girl on her upcoming Holy Communion ceremony. It brings back many fond memories of my Communion Day at Holy Ghost 44 years ago. It's also great to hear that the reunion went well and that a lot of younger parishioners are coming back to the church. The church is thriving once again and that is wonderful.

The reason there were no blessing of the graves is because out priest had undergone a very serious surgery and was not able to do it. However, he stated that if anyone felt that they were in need and said they felt the graves needed to be blessed to call the rectory to set up an appointment and he would make sure it was done. He held a mass on Memorial Day because he wasn't able to do this. If you call the rectory my mom is still the church secretary. To address the reunion, yes a lot of old/new/reconnections were made. I can find out more and will get back on here to writ as much as I can find out. As to the communion at such an early age. Pope John Paul has put a decree into affect for all the Catholic Churches to go back to their original ways. Which meant for the Ukrainian Church to take all of the Westernization (Roman Catholic) practices out. The communion given at the time of baptism dates back about 500 years ago in our church if not more. There will still be a time where the children will dress in their suits and white dresses, this will happen in about the 4th grade for the celebration of Pennance. Thank you to all of you for your feedback and please feel free to write and ask as many questions as you would like. I will try to keep you updated as much as possible! This Sunday again is a celebration with 4 baptisms, the last Holy Communion Class,& all of the younger Children receiving their Communion for the 1st time. The mass is at 11 am and there is a reception afterwards in the church hall. Father said all are welcome and our new priests will be there as well! Thank you again everyone, I hope I answered just about everything for you, I did graduate Holy Ghost in 1985 and have reconnected with one of my best friends from there on myspace. I've started a small page on there if you would like to visit - It is Holy Ghost Ukies, please visit I will be putting up pictures from the St. Nicholas program from back in Dec.

Mary, Well thank you for at least getting to the point about the reunion. I never graduated HG going there only in my early years. You do say that mostly the older crowd went. I am 45. We were the ones in this generation that graduated. We are the ones with computers also. It would be nice to hear on he page what the events were. How much reminiscing and if anybody made some new friends, or reconnected from their older ones? The St. Roberts people get together have joy and write and share about it. As Laryssa said some of us that are not in the area would like to know. It makes it difficult to want to support Holy Ghost when those of us who moved are forgotten. I also do think it was a disservice to our veterans that the Rector did not go down and bless the graves on a day to remember. There was an apologetic on the page about this. It seems to always come down to money. I love our Blessed Mother and try to think of the day as What would Mary our Mother think? May she have mercy! Thank you,

Mary, I am so happy to hear that the reunion went well and that Holy Ghost is again growing in members. That you are receiving Priests from the Ukraine is wonderful. I wonder if the calling to the Priesthood in the Uraine and Poland are dropping at a rate as fast as the U.S. I have noticed in our church in the Delco suburbs that more people have been coming to daily Mass these last few weeks than have been there in a very long time. It must give the Priest that say Mass Hope. You most be very excited about the Communion. Being in the Roman Catholic church I made mine at about 8 years old and loved looking like a Angel all in white. My mother was Baptized and made Communion at the same time as was the custom at Holy Ghost in her time. I assume from what you wrote it is still the same. Thank you for letting us know that the reunion did have a positive outcome and that it looks like the church will continue to survive when so many others are being closed.

Whats the nw thing about receiving communion when the baby is baptised? How is that possible. You actually mean the bread and wine together? Im glad to hear that the young people are coming back its their turn to keep up the good work of the parish.

I can tell you the 1st Reunion went very well. It was mainly the older crowd that went. They are hoping for a much bigger turn out for the reunion next year! There is quite a bit going on at the parish. A good amount of the younger parishioners have started coming back! We are also getting 4 priests and they're families for a month from Ukraine. Next week is the feast day of our parish and all of the children will be receiving communion from the day they are baptized! It's going to be very exciting, my daughter is going to receive for the 1st time and she is 3! If anyone has any questions feel free to email me & I will try to answer anything you might want to know! Bye for now.

Thank you Ann. Although this Tradition will be missed by many, times are getting difficult for our Priests with all the changes and a decline in the parish community. I know your last Priest also serviced a church in NJ. This is difficult indeed. Fewer and fewer Priest are being ordained. In the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, there was good news and bad. The good was there were 3 new young Priests ordained recently, the bad news is that there were only 3 young men that received the calling. So we continue to pray for those dedicated to our religious communities and understand why they can not be in all places at the same time.

HG from the 1960s: Thank you very much for your warm wishes on my "51st" Birthday! Where have all the years gone by!? Hope all of you are well and enjoying the beautiful spring weather back home. The conditions here has been pretty dreary--cold temperatures and rain on the weekends and milder temperatures during the week. Well, I guess I should not complain, because the flowers, trees and grass need it. I agree with Carole, we're luck to have this website to remember the good old times and to catch up with friends from Hoy Ghost and outside of our community, who have ties with us. I also hope someone will share with us the highlights of the recent Holy Ghost Reunion. All the best to everyone at Holy Ghost!

Unfortunately Carole you are so right. I have one sweet friend that I made through this page and he says the same things basically. He is tired of this behavior also, seeing it while he was growing up, and swears this time not to look at it any more. It seems that nobody in this parish wants to talk about anything only putting one another down mostly. Though there are some good posts and some nice people among the few here that do talk. There are also some nonsense posts that are mean in spirit. Our Ukrainian parish here is very friendly and not typical of what you may see here. How true that others see this page and see no Ukie Pride of days gone by. I am ashamed myself. By the way May is the month of our Mother Mary.

Curious to why no one has written in length about the Holy Ghost Reunion. Didn't it pan out? This school page is a wonderful place to add all those memories and for the many people who can't come home again, it is a gift of friendship to those you knew in the past. It is also a gift to those that never went to Holy Ghost but may have ties through family or friends, or for those that once came to a service at that beautiful church. Sharing is what makes an interesting school page. When there is lack of sharing then there will be more and more people saying goodbye.

Laryssa, Boy, Canada sounds great! Easter by the old calendar, Federal Monday holidays, this and that. I wish I could get deported. I am sure there are some that would like to send me there. Well, thank you for your wishes. I celebrated Messianic Passover Tuesday night. My friend will come over Sunday. It's all good. Funny you should ask about a Ukrainian community here. I think most Ukies are out on the coast (not all out to lunch) BUT!!! there is a new restaurant down town (can't remember the name though now) run by a nice Ukrainian couple AND!!! they have both galumpkies and pyrohi. $8,95 a clip and it is well worth it, and very filling. And they do have ketchup for me, LOL. Plus, we have had a very good Russian deli called 'Kiev', of which I frequent a lot. The Russian lady gives me a very hard time in jest, and then gives me many many goodies, like Polish chocolates. Canadian Post for your husband's job? Sound like a great gig. Do they deliver in rain and snow and sleet and hail also? May your family have the best Easter time ever. Uhm, the link didn't work, even though I tried putting in the 3 W's before ukicard. Here is a cool old fashioned type card place, too : http://www.midrash.org/cards/ Remember 'adoration of the grave', from I think, Holy Thursday until Saturday? The cool panyi's bringing those HUGE and yummy baskets to the church to be blessed by Father Lypyn? Some of those baskets were almost as BIG as the panyi's. Marching around the church with all the bells going off? Here is a nice link of different cities in Ukraine: http://ukrtelecom.ua/en/offers/web_cam/ All the best to your family. CHRIST has risen! Yes, this I believe.

Hi, George! Thank you very much for your warm wishes and we hope that you have a great Easter too. You're right, Easter Monday is a day off for federal workers like my husband, who works with Canada Post and of course the kids are also thrilled with a day off from school. In addition to this, our sons have next Friday off for Good Friday by the Julian calendar (Lucky guys!) Many teachers at their Catholic school and Ukrainian Canadians celebrate Easter by the old calendar. Is there a big Ukrainian community in Washington? P.S. A good friend sent us a beautiful Ukrainian card from this interesting website if you or anyone at Holy Ghost is interested, you can go to http://ukiecards.com/

Laryssa, boy you still remember your German! Yes, everything is good by me, never better. Always, all my best. Du auch Jane.

Greetings, George and everyone at Holy Ghost! We hope that the Breakfast reunion had a great turnout and even though we could not be there in person, we were there in spirit. Thanks to this wonderful website, I was also able to reconnect with a close friend Jane from my West Chester State College days, with whom I had lost contact over the years. P.S. I also hope that you were able to do a photo page from the reunion.

Liturgy. Breakfast will be offered, so we are requesting RSVPs. Please e-mail to holyghostreun@yahoo.com or call the Church secretary (Barbara) at 610 494-7899. We would like to have a general idea of how many people to expect. A bigger, more formal reunion is planned for Thanksgiving weekend of 2007 -this is a 'warm-up'.

Hello, Hope to see some fellow classmates at the upcoming reunion. Jo Ann Taboada (Jones) and I will be attending from the class of '78. Looking forward to seeing everyone. My husband and I just returned from Siberia where we adopted a 5 year old boy, Ryan, and a little girl Anastasia (6). Together with our daughter Megan (4), we now have an expanded family. Since the two little ones only speak Russian, I am wishing I paid better attention to all of those Ukrainian classes and songs. We've learned enough to communicate the basics, and they are picking up some English already. I have fond memories of my Holy Ghost years! I will try and bring some old photos of May Parades, Communion Processions, School Plays, etc. And even pajama parties with the girls from my class. Linda

I just happened to stumble across this website looking for info. on class reunions. What memories! Sheila Melnick, remember me? Class of '77. We were inseparable. KISS and ELO concerts. How are you? I'm looking for any graduates of Notre Dame and St. James H.S. class of '81. We are planning our 25th reunion this Nov. Was reading all of the entries... I remember pierogie day, the May Fair, doing Stations of the Cross, Mother Myron breaking a yardstick over [name removed by request] 's behind, then slamming the door so hard the picture of the Pope fell off the wall! Father Ed putting Leonard Hoopes upside down in the trash can... those were the days!! Hopefully I can make the H.G. reunion. Please pass on this info. to anyone you know from the class of '77 who went to ND or SJ. Thanks!

Thank you for the very nice photos of Immaculate Heart Cemetery. I was always afraid of that place as a kid. However, and this is a bit of a sidebar here, the staff there back in the 70's was very considerate. I always thought it was a 'Catholic only' cemetery. When my dad died a lifetime ago in September 1976, they allowed him to be buried there. My dad was a Lutheran. Msgr. Lypyn also showed my dad a final respect. The night of the viewing, Msgr. came in to do a service over my dad. They say in the Hebrew faith, that when you bury the dead, it is the last act of kindness you can do for that person. Reasoning is that the dead can not reward you for this. Vichnaya pamyat to our departed.

Michael Hrischuk, Your name doesn't ring a bell, but what a beautiful story. Is your mom Theresa Chernuch now or did we mix that up? We hope your parents get/stay healthy. I recall someone selling bees honey and eggs but it was so long ago. I wonder if it was your family. Do you still live on the farm? One of the Szupa's I believe became a priest Joseph in New Jersey last we heard. We don't attend Holy Ghost anymore and live in Lansdale where our priest Father Bunik came from Chester about a year ago. Best wishes to you and your family. Pauline and Walter

Michael, Loved the pic of your family, new Mrs. Cherniuh and found her to be a lovely lady, your name is different, didn't ring a bell, wasn't Schzupa (sp) a neighbor or good friend, what ever happened to their family, thanks for sharing the pic the webmaster would love some pics of the school.

Pauline, Yes we were great friends of the Szupas. They would vist us out on Convent Road in Aston as did many of the people mentioned in this forum. I remembered when Andre Szupa first learned to drive we all went to Atlantic City. We were laghing at his driving trying to keep up with us. Many memories of the Chester Ferry and going to Garrison Lake in Jersey back in the 60's. Mom's maiden name is Theresa Hrischuk. Some call her Resy. She is German and married my father who is Ukrainian, in Germany back in 1951. Mom is not doing that great these days. She had kidney failure and is on dialysis. Since dialysis she is much improved. She was very active in the Church and spent many hours making perogies until recently. If anybody would like information on how to reach her feel free to email me. Dad (Alex) is in his mid 80's. He lives in the old house like he was in the Ukriane in the 1800's. What a piece of work. If anyone remembers we had somewhat of a farm. Pigeons, chickens and honey bees. People would buy eggs and honey from us. I'm printing this page out to let Mom read. She'll get a kick out of it. Mike

Hi George and gang, how neat to find this, actually a co-worker had mentioned it a year or 2 back. He, like me, was born in the old Chester hospital. Don't know what made me look, but have found it very interesting + funny. I skimmed through the archives and got a good many laughs from that. My God-Myron, an unfortunate blast from the past, I saw her wack David George before because she didn't think his neck tie was up high enough and chasing him around the room. I only attended HG one year as my parents were in between moving us to Delaware, where I have been since. But my Mom said it's the only time I did all my homework and got decent grades!! 'cause I was scared not to!!! Oh well, that was then! Nice to stop by, talk to you all again, soon, take care, Linda

Hi, everyone! I think it's great that you're having a reunion after mass on 3/26/06. Wish that we could join you, but our work and school schedules make it impossible. To George: Boy, you have a great memory--I didn't remember the bus driver's name, but I didn't forget the fun we had riding to and from school! Thanks for your kind memories about my dad and Father Sagan. They both were great people, who have passed away, and we miss them. To Pete: It was nice to read your e-mails. My parents and I used to live across the street from you during the late 50's and your sister Patricia and I were in the same class at Holy Ghost. How is she doing? Please say hello to her for me. Donna, LOL on the tattoo, however I just don’t like tat’s. Oh well. Donna, respectfully I don’t remember you totally. However, you had a brother named Peter, right? He was a year ahead of me, tall, and used to really help out us ‘rookie 5th grade altar boys’. Nice guy. Your mom made/makes pyrohi? Laryssa, here is one for you. We used to ride the bus with a Mrs. Jackson, I believe, as a driver. I got on the bus before you. We went about 2 miles north of Atlantic Thrift Centre on Mac Dade. Then the bus turned left, off of Mac Dade, at the Gino’s and a pharmacy intersection, and on to your stop. You used to get on the bus with your brother Vladimir. The worst thing about that was that in the afternoon (I got off after you, as they did the routes backwards), smelling those good old Gino’s burgers cooking wasn’t easy. Like man, I was starving by then! Also, you used to get on the bus with Laureen Pepe and her sister. This was around the year 1969 – 1970. Your dad always seemed to be an all right guy, the way I remember him. How is your family these days? Daria mentioned Father Henry Sagan a while back. Boy, was he cool or what? He was politically un-correct by today’s stupid standards. Remember him with his leg up on the radiator, the long yellow glazed bottom window tilted in, puffing his cigarette and flicking it out the window, right in class? Fr. Sagan died young in the late 70’s, or early 80’s? Vichnaya Pamyat Henry Sagan, you rocked. I liked Fr. James Poorman. He gave me his portable radio when he left, I being in the 7th grade. I used to put it in the blazer pocket with the earphone up the left sleeve, listening to the radio during class by cupping my left hand over the ear and leaning on it. Myron never knew, nor did her snitches. I had that radio for a long time, probably worth a bit to nostalgia collectors. Yeah, the good old Wade Brothers on WIBG 990 AM were great DJ’s. ‘Sooner or Later’ by the Grassroots used to have the WIBG jingle at the start of the song. But I digressed again, didn’t I? When I go senile, no one will know. I can’t blame Ukraine for stopping the pipeline from Russia to Western Europe. Once they heard the pipes had natural gas in them, they right away must have thought about methane and wanted more. Got kind of cold there last week, down to minus 30 or something. Cabbage and potato makes a bit of caloric energy, but not enough for that type of cold. This new pope Bennydict is interesting. I hope no one eggs Bennydict on making him angry. I think he can be strict. Since nobody asked, I might as well answer. Favourite song for 2005? ‘Kerosene’ by Miranda Lambert. The lady pound chords the song, along with the drummer for 3 minutes. Almost like the Dave Clark 5ive. “Forget your high society, I’m soaking it in kerosene. Light them up and watch them burn, teach them what they need to learn. HAH!” A gorgeous venom with attitude. Check her out.

I am the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Father Nicholas Zbyr whom as I understand together with his children (my uncle Orest, Aunt Thiessa and my mother Maria) built this church. It warms my heart to this day to hear of wonderful stories my mother still shares of her entire family and the memories of her experiences at Holly Ghost. Its been many years since I have visited that area including the church but I am hopeful for an opportunity to one day go back there with my parents and learn of a time I know my mother still remembers oh so well. Perhaps a trip to Pen to see any still existing family and friends would provide a better opportunity to become more familiar with my mother's family history. ~Ellie C.

This ain’t gonna be answered by me in 2006 at all, as I had enough of that stuff the past years. If yer a Ukie you can figure it. Otherwise, play somewhere else. Thanks to my ‘tiger buddy’ and her hubby for the Tastykakes. They are still great with cold milk. Laryssa, and yours, and the cool Uke’s I talk to, have a great Ukie Xmas coming up in January. I remember the Church picnics at Malecky's farm in Boothwyn off of Faulk Road. Pony rides, great food, fast dance floor, great polka music. They even had a swimming hole. They were the good old days. I wonder how the M sisters are. I loved the church picnics because it was always lots of fun all day long.

Gee, no new posts in awhile. I liked yer memories Daria. We couldn't walk down Third Street in procession in this day and age though, due to snipers and strange adults. Remember the Candy Sale drives, lugging Mega-boxes of that stuff around, and not being able to eat it? Clickers always cracked me up. Like where in the liturgy did it say in parenthesis to "CLICK"? Banally robotic. So, anyone wanna send me some 'Get Sick Again' cards, or Tastykake chocolate cup cakes? Stuffed Cabbage 1 1/2 - Pounds Lean Hamburger 1/4 - Pound Long-grain Rice (instant rice works well too) 2 - Cans Tomatoes (best to use Tomato soup) 16 oz Can or 1 jar sauerkraut - rinsed 3/4 - Pound Beef Sausage-- cut 2" pieces 5/8 - Large Onions -- Chopped 5/8 - Cup Water Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder 1 Large Head of Cabbage 1 Green Bell Pepper Cut out the core of the cabbage so leaves are easy to put apart during boiling or pull off leaves as they soften. Use a very large pot. Place a layer of sauerkraut on the bottom of large roasting pan with a little bit of tomato soup. Combine hamburger, onions, rice, water, and seasonings. Mixture should be mushy (this gives the rice liquid to absorb and prevents cabbage rolls from getting hard. Lay a cabbage leaf in your hand with the core closest to your wrist. Place a portion of meat on the leaf on the back half of the leaf (over the core). Fold to form an oblong cabbage roll. Tuck the right edge in to secure the roll. Using this method, no toothpicks are needed to hold it together. Layer cabbage rolls over the sauerkraut until you run out of room or filling. Tuck pieces of the smoked sausages in among the cabbage rolls. Cut up the bell peppers and tucked among the cabbage rolls improves the flavor of the dish. Pour tomato soup over all of the rolls of cabbage. Bake for 2 - 3 hours or more at 350 degrees. Cover with foil during cooking this will help cook the rice too. This tastes excellent served with sour cream on top. Be sure you use a large enough roasting pan as there will be liquid bubbling up.

Not feeling old but how far back would you like to go LOL. I actually need a little assistance from my Holy Ghost Historians. As I recall my class of '56 (that's 1956) totaled 13. Seven girls and six boys. The girls I remember were Gloria Manchin, Mildred Laszek, Carol Kowalchuk, Helen Mykyta and the rest are a blank. The boys were John Kowal, Clifford Gates, Gerald West, William Bijainsky (sp), Roman Minchak and????????

Can anyone help fill in the blanks?

Caroline - Thanks for this. I guess I read something on the 'Guest Book' page that said there was some development also around Second Street. It would see a project like this needs some approaching road way.

I dunno, it is just sad. Go down AC and see a lot of homeless folks pan handling, and hitting the trays up for change in the casinos. I did deal with the Rescue Mission there in 1998, and talked to their clientele', many times. There is NOT much hope in them.

The money from the casinos was promised to AC, but ended going up to North NJ. It isn't a question about money, the casino industry promises just 'SO MUCH', and delivers less than zero.

I hope HG stays there. Gee, where would we have our reunion, LOFL???

Wow, someone on the 'Guest Book' page of Oldchesterpa wrote yesterday that there is some kind of idea to put a casino in where good old HG now stands.

Seems illogical. Now if they made a Bingo Parlour, that would be good.

Anybody else wanna' work a Bingo again? Could be a blast. Coke and holopchi would do it for me. The Lypyn would even put the 'Free Space' ball back in the machine, I bet.

Sad though, casinos suck. Just check out Atlantic City. We have them here. Bingo is just a cooler atmosphere.

I wouldn't be concerned though. Maybe it is only a rumour. Rumours kill, so be prepared, but don't be concerned until something happens, ya know?

Happy Monday HG'ers.

Yeah, back in 1972 that Monday the last day of eighth grade. I went home and watched Rowan & Martins Laugh In on KYW TV 3 NBC that night. I loved that show, and even bought the magazine. Dick Martin was always sloshed with the big grin on his face. I loved the party scene.

In the Laugh In magazine they had some sayings and assorted wackiness. One that I wrote on my school book cover in 5th grade was “you have one bad habit – you breathe”. Well, the blonde Miss Helen O'Donell thought and cried to Myron that I wrote that on the book and meant her. Whatta’ bollock case that was. Her cool sister knew that I watched Laugh In a lot, in fact, most people did back then.

Remember your last day at HG? Wasn’t there some relief and the fact that we were now BIG shots, going into 9th grade. And who could sleep late, cause now it’s summertime.

"Will I see you in September, or lose you to a summer love?" Great stuff.

We have a new deli and grocery store in town, it is called Kiev. The owner is Svetlana Novitskaia (Russian). She gives me such a fun 'hard time' when I go in there, and is great.

I bought some 'Hospodarochka Sik Tomatnee Mriya' cause I like Tomato Juice quite a bit. It is made in Odessa, Ukraine. This is great stuff, as there is no salt taste and pure. I also like her 'Evening in Odessa' chocolates.

She has nylon stocking boxes on the counter top, along with postcards, and assorted body oils. All jumbled up, no particular order.

So, are there any good import Slovak shops in your areas? Svetty says she is going to make me home made holopchi soon. Typical Slovak, she jokes all the time and gives me half her store. She even invited me to Sunday Church in Moses Lake.

Might not be too bad to be deported to Ukraine. I wish. Have fun gang.

Laryssa - by the way, Happy Birthday! Many more.

I did forget to mention the clarinet. That is the instrument that makes it Eastern European also. I got into Benny Goodman a lot lately. Quite a bit of jazz, as a matter of fact.

Toronto sounds good. Brooklyn was like that when I was up in that area for Carnvale' in the summer. Yeah, I did see that web site also with the FBK Band.

Well, have a great holiday weekend one and all. Don't drink and drive. Besides, if you hit a bump, you may spill your drink.

Hi, George! I never heard of the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band from Toronto before, but I did check out their website as you suggested and listened to some of their musical clips. They do have a very interesting Eastern European sound with a mixture of gypsy, jazz, and orchestral music. Some of their members are also of Ukrainian ancestry. This group must still be around, because you can book them for special occasions--weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc. As for Toronto, it's a great, clean, modern and multi-cultural city--with lots of immigrants from Ukraine, Poland, South America, Asia and the Caribbean. Every year in June, Caravan goes on and you can visit each country's pavilion, sample their food, enjoy their music and cultural exhibits. Have a great day!

the dolls were not the wooden type. They were a fashion doll (the type they sold in the stores in those days). The gowns made with layers of wide ribbons. The type used by florists for arrangments. Then lace, flowers, netting etc were added to make each one different. If you won and you were a blonde you would point up to the blonde dolls and pick the colored gown you wanted. There was always a Christmas doll and that seemed to go to the first winner on the wheel.

Krystine: Since you remembered the dolls, do you remember the ladies making deep dish pizza with orange colored cheese. They were delicious.

PALM SUNDAY also known as Willow Sunday

The Willow is used in place of palms to Commemorate Christ's entry into Jerusalem . The Willow was used in the Ukraine as it was the first tree to bloom in the Spring. It is called the Holy Tree. The branches (Loza) are Blessed in the morning then handed out at Mass. Some Ukrainians believe that the willow represents strenth and keeping it within the home or growing it in their yards will protect the home.

Loza b’ye, ya ne b’yu, vid nyni za tyzhden’, bude Velykden’

The willow is hitting, I’m not hitting,

one week from today, it will be Easter

or

The willow is hitting, I’m not hitting,

be as healthy as the water, be as wealthy as the earth

I always preferred the last reply.

Krystine: I really don't remember the tapping on the shoulder with pussywillows. It will be interesting to see what that did mean.

But maybe the guys will remember this one more - when we had to go up and kiss the large crucifix, Father Lypyn would smirk to some of us, moving the crucifix at the last second and then tapping us on the cheek, like a 'slap'. That dude was fun.

The wooden dolls must have been nice. When the Berlin Wall fell, there was quite a bit of Slovack art and toys available in the west. Unusual to western eyes, I suppose.

Must be time for recess. School's Out soon.

Helen: Although not a member of Holy Ghost, I did go to many of the Easter Masses with my Mother and grandmother. I remember many old people on their knees walking to the Cross at the foot of the Altar and kissing the Foot of Jesus on the large Cross that was there. I also remember the wonderful fairs they had at 2nd and Thurlow. My mother would make dolls for prizes on one of the wheels. I remember one year they had a duck that was a prize in one of the drawings, my kid brother won that duck and i was always afraid he would end up on that old wood chopping block in the back of the yard for Duck's Blood Soup.

The function at FoxChase was held on Mother's Day. Always a wonderful renewal of faith and Love.

PussyWillow was given out at Holy Ghost and most families and the traditional tapping on the shoulder of the person next or in front of you during mass. Then taking them to the cemetery to place on the grave of our deceased family member. Or rooting them to be planted in our the yard. The Blessing of the Easter foods also.

Making pysanky and being surprised at the beautiful egg that hid under the melted wax.

The Monks coming to Holy Ghost for Missions and half the time not understanding what they were saying because the dialect they spoke in Ukrainian was unlike the one our grandparents spoke. A harder Ukrainian.

Remember the little Wooden Church across from the one that stands today.

Yes, Helen the customs and traditions were and are still beautiful. The woman and men still caring on these traditions at the church should feel not only fulfilled, but proud of the heritage the church has given them.

Yeah, walking around the church three times was exciting, especially as an altar boy. I liked when the hand bells went off, signifying the Chalice coming out of the ‘Tabernacle’.

Anybody know why it was three times around though?

I never chased foxes, because I was too shy.

May Festivals. Thankfully Mrs. Pierce put a stop to them – wasting too much school time. That is only my opinion. Felt like an idiot in 7th grade dressed up like a green leprechaun. I was an idiot in 7th grade, come to think of it.

Hey, I have a question for Laryssa up in Toronto. Did you ever hear of the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band (very very talented)? They are from Toronto, and I saw them, oh about 15 years ago on Muchmusic. Their big video song was ‘Alle Brudder (We’re All Brothers)’, the lead singer busting out in a Kossatsky dance. I was wondering if they were still around in Canada? I hear Toronto is multi-cultural. Like Brooklyn, eh?

I have been listening to Klezmer off and on for a while. Maybe it is in the Yiddish dialect, but it is very Eastern European music. Would have been cool to have some of the church standards in Klezmer style. Sche New Merna Ai Yi Oy. Check out the Klezmonauts online. Actually a violin and accordion combo ain’t bad sometimes. Dexy’s Midnight Runners proved that. We could have thrown in a few ‘clickers’ for the rock a billy slap bass sound.

Well, I hope the Chester / Delaware County weather is just a nice as it is here. Enjoy the spring. I wonder… would the penny parties now cost a nickel?

Have a weekend - any kind, just have a weekend.

Okay, the comment on my blog page about Mr. Procysyn had nothing to do with his ability to sing. Rather it was about 8 track tapes.

Mr. Procysyn was one of those HG unsung heroes. So he kept to himself, which resulted in people saying he was odd. I don’t blame him, as he seemed not to get involved in the petty nonsense.

But, that man was there to bury our dead, and celebrate everything. And the way he went at it was to sing as if he was singing to GOD ALMIGHTY.

Shame there aren’t any recordings of him on 8 track tape, cassette, reel to reel, vinyl – whatever. Today’s ‘pastors’ make tapes of everything.

We had some great talent back in the day at HG, and Mr. Procysyn was one of them.

Anybody feel like roller skating in my sand box?

I attended Holy Ghost from 85 to 93 (K/7). I grew up on Edgemont Ave and moved from the city when my father retired from the Chester Police Department. The nuns were only around for my K and possibly 1st grade year, after that they were gone. Father Myron Grabowski(sp?) was at the church at the time w/ that little black chihuahua that I swear could tell if you were lying or not. Let's see if I can remember some of my teachers, Mrs K, Mrs Steciw, Mrs Long, Mrs Worrilow, Mrs MacColl, Mrs Tacchi, Mrs Bondrowsky, Mr Horn, Mr Branaugh their are others, but names escape me. I've lost touch w/ most of my classmates from then, Ronny Casey, Adrian Jackson, Michelle McFarland, Rob Cooper, Yuri Saldana, Candice Higgins, and the rest although I went to college in DE w/ Tiffany Garrett. I do have my share of memories from that place, the field trips to the zoo, being in the Xmas choir and performing at the Springfield Mall, playing Oregon Trail in the libraby, perogies, I could go on and on.

I was reminded this week that I didn’t have Mrs. Anne Curtis as a teacher. How true, I was out at Coeburn for the kindergarten year. However, Mrs. Curtis just seemed so in control, and the kids really seemed to love her.

Her husband John, was pretty nice to us also. I think it was 8th grade, and Mr. Kiziuk tried to form a basketball team. I was the worst player. Anyway, while waiting around the school auditorium for practice, John Curtis used to always talk to us.

He also was a coin collector, and had something I needed for my collection – the 1955 Ben Franklin 50 cent coin. Well, every time I look at my Ben Franklin 55 now, I think of him. Pretty cool guy.

I forgot to mention another classmate – Laurene Pepe. She was Hungarian, and very nice. Very intense and beautiful eyes. Laurene was always polite, and someone special. I remember the class picnic, and she had this very nice sundress on. The words ‘gorgeous femininity’, are an understatement. She left in the 6th grade, sadly.

Well, Xmas is gone, and Valentine’s Day is almost upon us. I should go to working on Photoshop, and do some HG cards based on teacher’s personalities, offering them free to HG folx, online. A Mrs. Anne Curtis card could be warm, confident and motherly. A Mrs. Steciw card would be classy. Sister Raphael’s card would be dignified. Miss V. O’Donnell’s would be beautiful. Momma Myron could be a sharp botulism can of blood worms. I’d like a Mrs. Steciw, or Miss ODonnell card, please.

Remember HG and the boxes to receive Valentine’s we made in those years? Red and white wrapping paper, with the appropriate decorations. We hooked them on the back of our desks, and people would place the cards in them. I thought I had a secret admirer in around 4th grade. Reason is that someone stole my ‘cut out cupid’ off my box. The tension mounted, and the big day arrived, and I opened my box! I had a Coke baseball player bottle cap, some pencil shavings from the sharpener, and a brown shoelace. I thought it a scapular cord. I have to say, I had many countless weeks of fun with those great toys, that one special day of the year.

This Valentine’s Day remember that someone special, in your immediate life. I already bought my lady a gift, got it hidden at work. I can’t wait to see her eyes when she opens up the wrapping and gets 375 Q-Tips, all neat, and in a row. Yes sir, boy oh boy!

The other good news is that the People Skills team, here @ Creedmore, says I should be discharged by the end of this century. Maybe then we should get together.

Thought of some interesting memories over the weekend.

Another great guy from HG was Mr. Rudnisckyj. I hope I spelled that right, no disrespect meant. Mr. Rudnisckyj lost his son, George, in the month of January, I believe, and I think it was 1970 (?). Mr. “R” loved his son. I remember seeing him on the church steps, as they carried the casket out, and I for the first time in my life, never saw such grief. This poor man. Mr. “R” worked bingo with us, and he said, “Georgie (he is the only one that I liked calling me that), if I ever see that man that killed my son, I will go get him”, while pulling out a piece. This in front of the Parkside Dunkin Donuts, bringing me home from a bingo. I felt so safe with Mr. “R”, I would have just watched. A true great of the parish. I was sad when I heard Mr. "R" died.

Here are some others I remember as being nice. Niceness is NEVER forgotten, by me.

Of course, there was my wonderful cousin, Marilyn.

There were two Anna’s that come to mind. One was in a few classes ahead of me. Her name was Anna Kit. She was always super friendly, and cared to be nice to us “babies”, as Mutha Myron sarcastically called us. I wonder if she ever worked with children, because she was just so nice to us young uns.

Ana Hladasz was taken out of the third grade, I believe, and put back a year. Just, BOOM, and yanked out. Typical way the hierarchy did things to humiliate. Anna was quiet, and cute, with her straight brown hair.

Lynne West, and Jeannie Szurkowski were something else. I think I drove them beyond crazy, but they were very cool young ladies.

Classes behind me? Rene Clements from Toby Farms. Very boppy, and one of the gang. She made the bus rides home fun. Maryanne Chernetz (ß sp.?), and Darlene Fatzimick were a year behind. You were both just nice in the schoolyard, at recess, and in line.

In our class – Sherry Blake. Sherry used to sit in front of me in the 5th row, by the window in 8th grade. She was in the front seat, I in the second. Sherry used to tap me on the leg, saying, “hey” and always had a nice word, and something light and positive to say. Sherry’s 8th grade graduation photo DID NOT do her any justice, and very pretty girl, with a super personality.

So, just letting these know, you have made an impression, after all these years, you are still remembered. Wishing you all the best.

Good night, sleep well.

Cool name Roxy. But, no, the first lyric was from the first Roxy Music album, a song called ‘Remake/Remodel’.

The second lyric that I tried was more obscure, the Flamin Groovies ‘Shake Some Action’.

Okay, so if you are in Delaware County, Cleveland, or Boston, just check your watch, or ask someone what time it is. It’s the same time zone, so it would be the same time in Baltimore.

Interesting about privacy online. There really is no such thing. Do you know what an IP is? How about a TCP? Deleting cookies and temp files is fine, but do you know how to get into a registry? Why do you think big crimes have the computers confiscated? It's easy to leave a trail. Do you know how to telnet, using another line besides yours (I gave three places away on my server here, one is a cool Ukranian lady, surprise, surprise – free web access)? If you answer yes, then you may know how to be ‘invisible’ or ‘somewhere else’ online. Otherwise, there really is no privacy. Ask John Suszynski or Allan Koch, they work in the business, should ya not believe me, about the above terms, and what I just wrote.

Just thought it might be cool to have some names, cause that way, nobody will come to your house, just e mail. And hey, we all have ‘delete’, ‘block’, and ‘spam’ buttons, so we can have our privacy. This is a forum.

No more song lyrics. I got the Nightcrawlers ‘Little Black Egg’ on. Now there is an obscure gem, from a cool era.

Excellent on the First Roxy Music album!

Here goes one more –

I will find a way To get to you someday But I am so afraid I’d fall Now can’t you hear me call?

This time of year would have been the ‘Mid Year Examinations From the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’. What a great time! File into the auditorium, new pencils, erasers, and strict rules. Timed events all printed out, 35 – 40 minutes, with a timer. It was all pretty posh, and proper.

I guess it didn’t matter. I always got a 70 in ‘Conduct’ and ‘Attention During Class’, on the report cards. Actually, I must have paid attention, cause I remember all this stuff.

Ok, so train A is leaving New York City, going west at 60 mph. Joey has 3 apples for a quarter, in his pocket, and gives away two. Margaret has 8 eggs, yet wants to help mother make 4 dozen brownies. So then, what time is it in Baltimore?

Chairman Mao Tse Tung had his ‘Little Red Book”. Anybody remember HG’s “Little Blue Book”? It was the Catechism, given out in second grade. The idea was to memorize the questions and answers, thus learning. The first two I remember are:

Q: Who made us? A: GOD made us.

Q: Who is GOD? A: GOD is the Creator of Heaven and earth.

HG did give us truth in some areas.

Anybody know who wrote this? I’ll give ya a hint, it was 1971, but wasn’t public until 1972 here in the states.

I tried but I could not find the way Looking back I only look away Next time is the best time we all know But if there is no net time where do we go?

Pretty deep stuff. Those things that seemd difficult from the past, were nothing. We look back and think, "What was such the big deal"? Make your today count, do something, and don't let it pass you by, for tomorrow will be here soon.

Julien, I hope you are successful in finding Orest.

Interesting, that people in other countries also look at this page. Hopefully, a reunion here, between Orest and Julien, shall take place. I have to wonder, what some people in other countries do think about this page, with the first names only, no e mail addies, dopey snips (just look at the archives). Maybe webmasters, you could require last names and (maybe) optional e mail. That might cut down on nonsense. Of course, I love the nonsense. Jibes don’t bother me.

I found a friend of mine from 1996 on the web last June 2004. She is 29, and was a real friend in 1996 in the Poconos. She made sure I ate (and ate and ate). She was in an abusive marriage at the time @ 21, and is now a newlywed since April. However, she is also going to get out of this marriage, due to more abuse. The point? She claims me finding her makes her laugh. We share E mails, snails, and phone calls. Before the tongues start wagging – my wife has even spoken to her on the telephone. They became friends. I would have never found her, if she didn’t use her e mails, and name. Why the BIG shyness here over last names, I will never know!?!

Anybody remember this poem, taught in the third grade at HG? Here goes:

We had a picnic we had buns We had wieners big fat ones We had wieners on a stick Mother told us, don’t be quick.

Turn them slowly front and back Cook them slowly until they crack We had cookies and lemonade Beth saw a bee and got afraid I dropped a pickle in the dirt But I washed it off so it didn’t hurt.

We had a picnic we had fun Now all we want is another one.

Strange what the mind remembers. Of course, it is about food, so no wonder I remembered it.

Khrystos rodyvsya!" (Christ is born) the response "Slavite yoho!" (Let us praise him.)

St. Mary's is a beautiful church. The fact that your congregation continues to celebrate the Holy Day with a dinner is a tribute to their deep faith and love for the parish.

We keep our decorations up in our family also and keep the lights burning outdoors in memory of the Beautiful traditions and customs handed down to us by our Ukrainian side of our family.

Its amazing how many took down all the Christmas decorations, and for our Epiphany. Its a little depressing but our home will celebrate with Kutya, and other delicious homemade recipes. St Mary's in Chester is having a dinner as well tonight unfortunately its not in a good neighborhood we have to sweep the streets before we can park due to all the glass etc. Christos razdieyetcha! Gee, Caroline, Merry Little Xmas to you and yours also. Isn't today also Epiphany? This was the day to go and get some 'holy water' with the wax in it, after Fr. Lypyn blessed it by putting the candles in. They said that when you drank it, you would never get sick. Well, that never happened, but a cool thing, I guess. So stay cool. Urhm, I yuh mean, stay warm.

Ok, on to Miss Glacken. She used to have that kinda grey streaked shag (yet flat) hair cut. She also used to lean back, and laugh, showing a LOT of teeth. Somehow the Ohio Players album 'Honey' comes to mind now. Anyway, boy did people have trouble with 'the Lypyn' or what? He did get into some scraps with a few parishoners, my mum one of the. She hated him. I didn't. I always thought him strick, and yet he was fair. I guess they are the same ones who started the rumours on him, about money going to a house in Wildwood, etc. The man was only human, and he really was NOT any worse than some of the stuff floating around back then. I remember when I heard he died in 84, I believe, I actually did cry. The guy was alright.

Yeah, Happy 2005. I was always in some kind of stupid trouble, and that is why I am what I am today, which may not be that good. I always had trubble wif da Ukies. I wonder how they behaved when they was young??? I remember a couple of other teachers that should be mentioned. There was Miss *. She was young, and a 'Miss', yet she got pregnant, and we had to not ask questions or say anything. Hey, it's her life, and that was cool. Then Miss McGlacken was from Venezuela. She was very alright. Then came Christine Wallace. Kinda' preppy, and friendly. All of these were from around 70-72, I think. Mostly they covered the English teaching. Well, I hope they are well. New Years? Ain't no thing, though. It's only a calendar change. Happens every month.
