Reunion News

August 27, 2007 Update:

Hello Everyone Today I have decided to explore the possibilities of an Upland Reunion. This would not be a class reunion. But a reunion for those of us who lived in Upland during the 60's and 70's. This reunion will be open to all. However it's too big a task for one person to handle. So I'm looking for help. For those of you who would like to volunteer. Please send me an e-mail message and a phone number or cell number where one can be reached. Once we have the volunteers. We will submit a plan and projected costs alone with possible dates to the web page for all to see. Should you have any questions or suggestions please e-mail me. I will bear all the start up cost for now.

Wow! Just discovered this site and I'm amazed by the names from the past. I lived in Upland from 1954 through 1973, when not away @ college. Started in The Project but moved "up" to 8th Street in 1962, joining those wealthy Uplanders like Frank Phillips, John Cook, Jeanne Hartman (boy, did I have a crush on her), Linda Sension, Cheryl Hamilton, Dave Reischer, Tommy O'Byrne, Mike Hunter, Richard Silva, Barry Braitman, Dave Williams et al. Had to travel to visit my old friends like Dale Paige, Bob Cisowski and Eddie Pristash, but picked up new friends like Earl and Dave Clough. Best memories of grammar school include Majkowski's chopping block, Jess Richardson and Ms Jackson (probably the best teacher I had in 24 years of education). Can't forget June Ruth Smith or, a little earlier, Ms. Miller, Ms Goldberg or the unforgettable Ms (you'll never amount to anything, Craig) Stoots. I still remember Upland fondly, though I'm gone 35 years. My buddies and I used to say, "You can take the boy out of Upland, but you can't take the Upland out of the boy". It's true.

Take care all I've been luck enough to reconnect with on this site even if it was brief. I will not be checking in anymore. There is no interest among those here to continue communication. I wish you all the best but I suppose we have proven that the past is just that - the past. God bless.

Lived at 1124 Church St. from 1953-61. Childhood memories of Hill St. School and Ms. Mabel Jackson, the best teacher I ever had. Friends with Skip Quinn, David Lee, Sandy Ely (my "fast dance" partner at the Main St. School dances), Bonnie Cardinal, Ann and Diane Blizzard. Jimmy's corner store to buy "penny" candy and "Pops" store where I wasn't allowed to go because he had a pinball machine. Hangin' out in the woods where the Crozer mansion once stood (now a shopping area, I think) and smoking my first cigarette. Takin a bus (cost ten cents) to Chester to shop or see a movie then hot dogs at John's Doggie Shop. It was another life. A time fondly remembered. "You don't know what You've got 'til it's gone."

Hi Cheryl, I sent you an e-mail to your address but it came back. If you would e-mail me at my address, I will explain some things to you about my Mom and the family situation. I don't know if you have spoken to Debi any time in the last 2 or so years. I sent the picture of your family to my sister-in-law and she printed it off and gave it to Mom and she was thrilled to receive it. You have such beautiful daughters and she was really happy to hear about you and your family. She is going to put that pic in her scraebook.

Hey Carol, you are so kind, thank you for writing! Tell your mom thanks for the great memories I have of her and Debbie and you! I have been to Upland at least 3 to 4 times a year. I go to my dad's grave, grandmother, grand fathers and uncles graves. Sometimes I have my mom and Warren with me, is your mom up for a visit some time? I would let her know, I wouldn't just stop, tho' I do Penny Herman.......she just is never home. We have stopped a few times with people that my mom knows. My heart is still Upland, it has changed alot, but my mind and heart has not!

Hello to all Uplanders!!!!!!!!!!!!! I moved tp the Poconos in fall of 74, still have some family there.I would love to hear from some folks from "back home"! I am in touch with Lonny Hunter who was my dance partner at the great Clubhouse Dances. Perhaps some may remember me from there. My father was Ralph "Si" Keiper". He formrd and ran the dances along with several other great willing people. It was a great place for us all to go. Too bad no one does that for the teens anymore. My father passed on in 2002, my mother is still alive. We lived on Lane "D", next to Mr. Murray, he was the custodian at Main Street School. Lonny Hunter told me that someone is trying to get a gathering together, a reunion of a sort. Would love that, to see Upland people again. I have many memories of Upland, sledding down the hills, by the Baptist Church and another that I can't remember the name of right now. My email address is above. I would love to hear from you all. Regards, Dawn

Hi Cheryl, I was just reading your post and thought I'd jump in here. Reading everyone's memories is great as it brings back a lot of my memories. I haven't been back to Upland in many years but I looked up a satellite map the other day. Wasn't a very good picture. Mom was asking about you and I told her what I remembered you had told me. She wants me to remember her to you. She was very ill a couple of weeks ago but is fine now. Hope you and your family are well and happy.

Hi Terrie, sadly the site does not get as many postings as one would think reading prior posts that show great interest and affection for the old days. I have a sneaking suspicion that it is read however and that emails are exchanged. I don't know you but I do recall how we loved the "Charity carnival" each summer. My family left Upland in 72 at the age of 12 and moved to Chichester to avoid the the school merger. Some of the people you mention sound familiar - their lasts names anyway. Just wanted you to know that your post is being read and glad you found the site!

Hello, I did not attend Hill Street but did go to Our Lady of Charity School and for something to do I attended summer school w/friends at Main Street which I really enjoyed. As a teenager in 1972 we moved to Rising Sun, MD. I have two sisters Debbie and Stephanie, and two brothers Ronnie and Eddie. My Mom and Dad are Shirley and Ron Smith and my grandmother was Margaret (Peg) Booth. I have very great fond memories of Upland. It was a great place to live in the 50's, 60's and early 70's. I had so many friends and thru the years lost contact with them. Would love to hear from anybody that knew the "Smiths" that lived on 9th Street. To Jane Ladder I used to hang w/your brother John and sister Gail and spent time at your house and to Glen Boggs, you asked me to be your girlfriend in the 60's and then 2 days later told me you were moving to Michigan, hope it worked out well and life is good for you. I am married w/30 yr old son and 32 yr old stepdaughter w/2 grandsons. I attended Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cadets, and many dances. My best girlfriend since 1st grade was Nancy Maculley and still is throughout the years. Wishing all uplanders and their families well.

I googled 318 Griffith Street tonight and used their satelite map to find the house. It appears that the project has been torn down and rebuilt into fewer houses with more land in between them. All of the lanes now have tree names and such. For those of you who have remained in Upland is this so? I also googled trulia.com for houses for sale and saw several on 9th street and on newer streets around the school and Salvation Army camp. Most had the address listed as Brookhaven. Is the name Upland becoming obsolete? I miss the place and think I wouldnt mind living there again. Hi to anyone who remembers the Dyson family. Larry now lives in Oregon. Patti is in Simi Valley near Los Angeles and Ellie is near Fort Worth, Texas. I would love to hear from old classmates like Kerry Grasser, John Swanson, Walter Wanko, the Mitchell twins, and my favorite old girlfriend Barbara Bruni.

Hi Ken, Think I told you I lived in Mass way back when 74-79. Its different up there, never is any place like home. I sometimes meet people throgh work that are from Pa. and funny how instantly comfy I feel with them. I do hope to get home sometime this year. Trouble is I want to drive and no one else does. I just like enjoying the sites and poking along. Go visit a few days and take a few for traveling. Why be in a hurry. I wish more would get on here. Seems they got lost maybe when we got rid of the spammers, which is nice. Need to mail everyone if I would just sit a bit. Don't like sitting here to much. Anyway have a nice day, its 70 degree's here today and I want to go play a few hours. Take care and keep smiling.

Liz, prayers for your mother. I see her face from even 35 years ago SO VERY clearly. If she remembers me please give her my love. On another note, My 3 brothers and I dealt with losing my mother at Crozer Hospital 9 years ago. We were all born there, my mother too, even if it was is the "old wing" that still stood (in 1998 at least). Born there, passed on to a better place there. Powerful. You, John and the entire family are in my prayers. Ken

Took me a while to find this site again, lost it from my favorites and thought it was completely removed. Found it again through Chester High School reunions. I was home for a week recently visiting my Mom in the hospital. She is a little better but I will probably move back home to be near her now that her health isn't well. I guess the vacation is coming to an end. I'll have to join up on the reunion committee with Wes when if I move back in time. Great seeing some of my old buddies again, Audrey Nickerson McKelvey, Vicki Frye Smith and especially Janet Grasser Peterson. She always is there to greet me when I show up at Crozer Hospital. I am glad to see her sister Nancy among our reunion newcomers, welcome Nancy, I hope Janet jumps on board sometime. I had a chance to give Joanne Kirby Long a hug while at the hospital, it's great that Crozer has provided so many wonderful careers for us Uplanders, I worked there years ago. My whole family has had job opportunities there. Two of my sister are still working there. It's a terrific hospital. Well, I hope everyone has a great holiday. Remember... Merry Christmas to all...And to all a good night... Best wishes, Liz

Hi to all Uplanders. It was great to read some of the emails to this site. Brings back a lot of memories. To the Harpster girls--we lived next door to you on Lane J. Your dad was bigger than life--I was intimidated by him! I'm sorry to hear about Barbara--she always had a smile on her face. I have good memories (mostly) about Upland schools. Upland was a good place to grow up years ago--not so sure about that today. My sister Janet still lives in Upland. To the person who remembers Kerry Grasser--he's my cousin and he lives in Williamsport PA. I remember him playing football for PMC (now Widener) and seeing him on TV.Kathy Kline --do you remember breaking a yardstick over your knee and yelling at Mr. Makowski? I do. It was a friday and his favorite expression was "I've got no money and no place to go." I thought you were quite brave. I's great going down memory lane. Keep in touch.

Hi Gerry, hope all is well, I still check in. I was considering putting together a website just for Uplanders where we could post pictures but aside from 3 or 4 people here there just doesn't seem to be any continuing interest from many initial posters. I have made a road trip to Pittsburgh - liked what I saw and just recently made a decision on a first year rental, will get to know the place well and then but somewhere. I will be moving the week after Christmas.

I see a lot of familiar names here. It is great to read that some have maintained communication after all these years. Most of my family still live in Upland. Have you been around the town lately. It is nothing like it was in the 60's and 70's. I remember being able to walk down the streets at ALL hours day or night without fear of anyone bothering me. Of course it helped if you lived there your entire life. Times have changed.

This is to Dawn, I don't remember getting to know you but I do remember the Municipal Building Thursday night dances, what a great time that was. But I think we may have more in common recently than those old days in Upland. My husband and I recently had a house in Indian Rocks at Lake Wallenpaupack. I loved Greentown, Sterling and the surrounding area. Hated to leave it but we moved to Florida last year to boat year round. I miss the mountains though, especially this time of year. I bet it's beautiful. Would have loved to have communicated with you back then, could have met for dinner at the Hazzards' Raintree Restaurant, we loved that place. Best regards, Liz

Welcome Dawn, When did you attend Hillstreet School? What part of Upland did you live in? We all remember the dances they were great! They gave us kids something to do other than hang out on the streets. Please spread the word about this site and the reunion we would like to get together. Your name doesn't ring a bell to me but there may be others that do remember you! Take Care, Kathy

Try to spread the word to others. I saw Chris Ferguson posted after I had sent him an email. Not sure it had anything to do with my email as I never got a response but was glad to see a post from him all the same. SPREAD THE WORD.

Wes Congleton

Hi Ken, good morning! Mass is very expensive. I lived there from 74-79 and it was really high then, but so were the wages. We lived on Hanscom AFB, don't know if its still there. Guess that was a world of its own. I worked at that time for a company called Instrumentation laboritories, Medical equipment manufacturer making sterile filters for blood gas machines. I remember there were four male chemists that had a weekly ugly bride contest. Sheesh. I remember a store in Boston called Building 19, They sold scratch and dent, but really had some nice made furniture. Bits and Pieces but more then anything the cold, snow and ice. Two little people to raise didn't have time to really smell the roses and travel around much. Kathy my sister is the one that started the moving. She moved here and wouldn't come back, so I started coming down to visit and fell in love with the peace here, and thought it offered my kids much more. I've never had one regret. But I do get homesick at times. My kids love it here. But like everywhere else were experiencing a population explosion and building going up everywhere. Can hardly see the beach for the condo's, darn. I would move also, further north in alabama but just having a grandbaby I'm not moving anywhere. Its a beautiful area and I have the best of all worlds. All the water you want to play in, Mobile on one side of me and Pensacola on the other. Always things to do. I always say "I was born a yankee and dying a rebel". <Smile> Have a great day.

Hey Gerry, I know what you mean about keeping the time capsule memory of Upland in tact. What we miss here is as much a place in time as it is a place in geography. Not sure Mr. Emory would appreciate that one but it's true.............I moved up here to the Boston metro in 2000. I'm a computer analyst and Boston offers much more tech work than the Phila area. I checked the map to find Bedford, not all that far from me. I'm a stones throw out of Boston on the north shore. Beautiful city but I have recently requested a relocation to Pittsburgh. My company has locations in both. While it won't be "back home" the cost of living, and other factors that I'm not happy about in MA. were the great motivator. I will probably be there for Christmas....... What took you so far south and do you like it better?..........I hope some other the others that post step up and post more often. Seems some are sitting back a bit.

You are so right Ken. As I remember back and thinking of today's youth, we had it all. How nice it would for them to share what we did. Loved your dream, haven't been to Upland in 20 years. I want to go home, but then I don't. I think I like remembering the way it was. I would definitely love to meet everyone again. Do you remember Dirty Johns Steak Shop on 9th street? I wanted to tell you also I lived 5 years in Bedford, Mass. Loved it up there but lots of snow, that I don't like. In fact was living there when a Blizzard happened, believe it was 76. National Guard was called in, lots of people died on the road, 7 ft drifts in front of the house blocked the doors shut. Now its Hurricanes to deal with, always something. How did you end up all the way up there?

Wow, this site and the really special opportunity it offers several of us to reconnect OR first time connect on a common theme must be hittin my ole' subconcious!.........I had a dream last night that I was an adult and in Upland, sort of as a returning former resident but sort of as a kid at the same time....you know how dreams can be. I saw two females, maybe the Kline sisters because I didn't know them but they seemed to be there as both kids but adult visitors at the same time. We were way down Upland Ave. near where Ship-N-Shore used to be and where Jimmy Gallon's Store used to be. They were riding those Razor Scooters the kids do now. They told me they wanted to revisit McGinnley's Store up near Upland Baptist and if I could show them the way because they didn't quite remember. I said sure and we headed up 3rd St. I think it was. We all went in as iI hadn't been in years either. We found the building was now a mix of a kind of store and sandwich shop that had picnic benches inside and servered a lot of roast beef sandwiches. It had different rooms and a few corridors. It was being run by a name I recognized in the dream as an Uplander from our youth that stayed in Upland and he was glad we visited. We saw some oldtimers in there too. He was showing us the floors and the fact that they were still the same as when we were all kids. We stayed and wandered a bit and looked around the walls alot and out front windows that shown on to Main Street down that way. Then I remember myself and the girls left with smiles and looked toward good old Upland Baptist and began to wander up that way to have a look.........the dream fades there, maybe the alarm clock...........not looking for analysis but thought I'd share. It made me smile and happy for this site yet homesick for our little town of yesteryear at the same time........just thought I'd share.

Kathy, I can't believe you would even think you wouldn't be remembered! We just have to get more people involved from the "good old days" of our youth, especially if we want to see a reunion realized. And we did know pretty much everybody in town, it's what gave us the charm or small town living. Trust me, you were always unforgettable. You too, Ken. It made my brother's day to hear from you. P.S. Hi Liz, I can't remember who found the meteor. I just remember how much of a ruckus it caused. The military, the fire trucks, police etc. I can't remember the flags but I do remember all the parades and the great fireworks. I walked many of those parades being in the Brownies and Girl Scouts until I was about 13. The firehouse would have these great little potato rolls, ham and cheese that I loved. There was plenty of refreshments. Do you remember that Donnie Thornton was hit in the head with something from the fireworks and had to have a metal plate in his head? Gosh it was so scary. He is lucky to be alive! I was so disappointed to see that apartments were built on the hill across the street from the house we lived in because that was the greatest sledding place. We had so much fun there. Hey Liz in New Orleans for St Patricks Day there's a huge 75 float parade and they throw potatoes, carrots, heads of cabbage, onions and lemons. Is that crazy or what? This thread is great, I hope some of the others from Upland find it also.

Hey, Kathy, I remember that meteor, wasn't it Connie Bloom's little brother John who found it. I think his picture was in the Daily Times (or should I say the old Chester Times) Hey, remember when a plane or helicopter would drop the little flags over the ball park on Memorial Day (or Fourth of July)? If you found a special marked one I think you won a dollar. That was so neat that we had that. Who arranged that kind of stuff? That ball park really meant a lot to us. The strawberry festival, easter egg hunts, baseball, baby parades, fireworks. It was a good place for the town to get together and celebrate. I think my grandfather actually helped install the water fountain there back in the early 60's. As kids, we always felt proud of that. Oh, to remember such simpler days... Love to your family, Liz

Hello everyone, i usually do not involve myself in petty arguments, however i felt compelled to add my opinion. To Dr. mike Chivalette, Sir i do not know you, i have no malice towards you in anyway. I would just like to remind you that Christians should set a positive example, Judge not and you shall not be judged. Turn the other Cheek. I have reviewed your messages on this site, and frankly i dont understand? You profess to be Chritian yet your messages depict a judgemental, boastful, angry man. I would also recommend not offering folks an invitation to travel to your geographical location so they may be properly educated quickly. This could be misconstrued as a threat/challenge, and possibly improper behavior for a Doctor whose title is head of a Christian Academy. I wish you well and hope that you palse momentarily and reconsider the words that you choose in this forum.

Sorry for causing such outbursts, tantrums, name calling and anger....maybe for clarification the following might help: 1) Christian is spelled as written, not, "christen" that would be a girl's name which was not capitalized. 2) Arrogant, sorry you cannot relate to earning and being named a doctor, but I am proud of my achievements. Any of you who have ever earned or achieved anything would understand...obviously, none of you have. 3) Your little group attack humors me. It shows how petty and childish you still are....grow up, achieve something, and by all means get a life! You reside in the past....because you have nothing....it is obvioius...you sound like whinning Phillie fans...always crying and definitely posturing like you are sooo tough...please... 4) To the one who asked where I will be in October. I have a better idea...come on down to south Florida....and you will be properly educated very quickly...or better yet, stay where you are. Either way, stop using the internet to "hide behind." So,,,,children.....learn to spell, don't be rude to others you don't agree with, and by all means....stay off of the internet, kids.

The Army trucks and jeeps the police etc. I remember my brother Rocky who is no longer with us setting the Salvation Army grounds on fire and my mom turned him over her legs a whipped the ever-loving heck out of him! How about pie eating contests and cartoons at the church during the summer. There are bullies in every town I was bullied as probably each one of us were at one time or another! I silly memory to share - I remember when I was in first grade that everyone got to stay at school and have lunch in the lunch room. Not me, mom always had me walking home for lunch. Well one day I decided to save my recess nickle (that bought you a little orange carton of milk) and my cupcake and save it for lunch so I could eat lunch in the lunch room too! So....there I am eating my Tasteycake snack and drinking my little orange carton of milk for lunch feeling like a big shot when I glance over at the doorway to the lunch room. Theres my mom with a very angry look on her face and shes doin the finger movement. You know, the one that says come here - NOW! Yipes! I was in for it. She marched me down to my first grade classroom to get my coat, my teacher, an older grey haired woman whose name I can't recall suggested to my mom that she take it easy on me because I didn't mean any harm. Good thing for that because all I really got was the guilt trip of "how did I know where you were and that you weren't hurt?!" and "I even made your favorite luch of tea and P&J sandwiches". I really felt bad. Then suddenly I recall that I ended up with a shiny new FireBall XL-5 (the marionette outerspace puppet TV show) metal lunch box :-D That friggin tin lunch box (with a thermos!) made me the happiest kid on my street! Didn't take much in those days did it.

I would not trade my past, current and future life for anything or any amount. This site is the best thing that I've seen in many years and I hope it never stops. Mike, Upland wasn't an easy town but you grew learning a lot of common sense. My first fight was a few days after starting first grade right under that tree in front of Hill Street School that you see at the top of this page. When I went to Main Street in 4th grade it was a few days after starting again and right near the monkey bars behind the school. I didn't start either fight. Bullies are part of life and growing up in Upland taught you how to deal with that. Do you let your kids climb trees? Can they ride a bike in spite of all the padding they have on? Upland was one of a kind. Many of us got through, some didn't. Those that did like us should be thankful, the school of hard knocks gives an education that might be hard earned but it's also very valuable. Be happy you are doing well, not spiteful. Mike, you didn't grow up on Kennedy Drive by any chance?

Dr.Mike, I do not have a younger brother, so maybe your memories are not as true as you think. From the people I see writing you, I see that I'm much younger than you. Therefore it was not me bullying your whining butt. So how about leaving this website to those of us that are proud of where we came from.

Amen Lance! Thank You very much. I very much enjoyed my life in Upland. Maybe it wasn't perfect, but looking back we all had it pretty good even if times were tough. We had each other. I was basically oblivious to bad teachers as it was said. I don't remember bad really. However I do remember all the laughter. Thank you Friends and Thank You Upland for all the greatttttttt childhood fun you provided us. Thank you to the School System (great dances), Fire house, Municipal Dances ( great dances), Reverend McQueen and the Cellar Dances, Thank Reverend McQueen for Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas Dinner and great presents. Thank you to all my teachers that gave me a whack on a daily basis. Thank you Mr. Kroll, Mr. Richardson, Mr. Andriole and the countless others that really had the upper hand to who I am today. I'm a hard working honest Lady, and it starts from your childhood. Thank you Mother.

So ayeeee Doctor Mike, what are you up to around the end of October? Sorry, I had to. Mike, re-read your email, no wonder you got beat up so much. And the fact that you changed your first name from Mike to Doctor and felt the need to announce it speaks volumes. For a born again christian you seem to be carrying around a lot of anger. But.......I forgive you, as I'm sure we all do.

Mike Chivalette, I am responding to your email dated 12 Aug. 2007 @ 09:37:33. Thank you for your gracious comments. Your gracious self should have stopped with the first sentence of your other wise disgusting email. I like the statement where you said,....and seeing names of people I recall through my older brother and sister, I also recall many of the things that Upland did not offer me. What a pity that you were sop deprived. I believe in my heart that you should blame your parents for raising and schooling you in such a terrible town as Upland. (in your words). Don't blame the teachers, people and community leaders that gave us, the people of Upland, the best that they had to give. If the teachers, people and community leaders of Upland did not offer you amny things that you so selfishly think you were cheated out of then again, put the blame on your parents. I'm not going to continue with this email as I'm so upset with your self centered self. Your email address says it all. It reads mhcbornagain@yahoo.com. BORN AGAIN! You were not born again, you were already born. I request that the great and wonderful people from the past that attended Upland and Main Street Schools to not respond to this persons disgusting emails again.

I wanted to take a minute to commend this site for allowing so many of us to "go back in time" and recall memories of days gone by. However, in reading through the many comments and seeing names of people I recall through my older brother and sister, I also recall many of the things that Upland did not offer me. Many have lauded certain teachers, leaders, etc. stating that they were outstanding leaders. Without stating names, I believe that there were many fine people in Upland during my "early years." However, there were also many people who were rude, indignant, and truthfully, bullies. To those, I say, God bless you and I hope you have really changed since your early years. My progression and growth as a person was not made possible by certain teachers, people, community leaders, but by a God who saw a young boy who desired more in life than mere medicrity. I was fortunate. I was able to pursue higher education, earn my doctorate, and progress forward, by God's grace, not by specific teachers and people who often tried making both my life and my families, hard at times. Upland is a memory.....but it is and will always be....the past......I prefer the present and future. No longer do we have 5 cent cokes, the freedom to play in open areas, and the memories of many many years gone by. No, Upland/Hill Street, and Main Street are no longer what they were. Those days are long past....and often, memories are what "we want them to be" not as they actually were. Examples: Being jumped while walking on Halloween night (through the Upland ballfield) where all my candy was stolen by older boys. Or, having a 15-year old boy continually attack me while walking home from school - I was 8 at the time. Yes, I remember Upland....the good and the bad. I also would love to meet some of the certain people today.....like Walt Campbell's younger brother...it would be very interesting to see if he has changed or is the same person he was then.

Dear Hill Streeters and Uplanders, So very happy to hear from Cheryl Harpsters, Walt Campbell, Wes Congelton, Bonnie Reese, Liz Whitley, the Kline sisters and so many more... I hope this web site keeps groing and we can all meet somewhere, sometime. Anyone a good organizer? Or have any idea where we can meet? When? I still have the group picture of the 8th grade graduation class on the steps of McQueen Hall (my Dad took the photo). I have my '69 tassel from the cap as well! The past July 4th Upland had a huge celebration in the ball park of course, live music, food, games, my sister went and said she saw a lot of people from way back, a Bailey girl, Debbie Silva, and many more. I am so sorry I wasn't there. I went to the annual Crab feast a couple of years back an was happy to see Joeanne Kirby and Vince Long, Bobbie May Low and andy more, last month I went to a function at the Upland Fire hall, I saw Dougie Scott, he was friends with my youngest brother Kevin. When they were little Kevin accidentally shot Dougie with a BB gun in his heart! (It's still there the BB)! Also I remember Gail Lader that lived next to Hill St. School, she was friends with Cassie Carter, well the first time I saw a colored TV was at her house, imagine that! We have sure come along way in 40 years, since our black and white TV's. I remember when I first moved into Upland Nov. '69 Miss Henderson was my teacher. Mr. Kroll was principal and they called him "parachute pants". That 1st Christmas in '65 I went to the Christmas Party at the Municipal building with Debbie Silva and they gave us a little box with hard Christmas candy in it. We were so thrilled! The Upland Centennial was the best. Mrs. Whitley made me a cotton long dress with an old time bonnet. What a hard working good women she is. It was an awesome time, especially being carefree. I always had one thing on my mind and that was b-o-y-s! My parent still live on Castle Ave. and still have the same phone number after 40 years, we used to say TR and then the 5 digits. Sometimes I still write it in my phonebook that way and my three daughters say "what's does that mean?!" Please pass the word and keep this website going. WARMLY. Audrey Nickerson McKelvey

Kathy and Gerry, the Kirby I knew was Judy, she was in my grade. Didn't know her family - might it be the same? The Vandergrifts I knew were Carol, she was in my grade. Then there was Dee Vandergrift he later moved to Chichester like we did. I don't think Dee and Carol were related but I'm not positive. Another that moved to Chichester after us was Tom Tally. Anyone know any of these people? :-D Such a small town and almost every family had 4 or more kids it becomes comical trying to sort them out.

<laughing> Its been to many years...Kathy has Eddy Vandergrift (Spider) amd Eddie McCormick mixed up...we lived across from the McCormicks at Third and Roop. Roop was between us...We lived in the big project houses and McCormicks lived in the small one across from us...Remember they had Ducks for years that someone stole...Remember how heart broken they were...Vandergrifts lived down across from Donna Hickey and the Loves. Mr.Vandegrift was a Police Officer to I believe. Wow must of been the only jobs in Upland at that time...not to many other opportunitys back then. Other then the penny candy stores and the little shopping center across from Hill Street School. That school sure did shake alot...Remember Mr. Andriole? (something like that). He was a giant!!! Course all 4'10 of me thinks everyone is pretty tall. He used to point to the word "THINK" above the blackboard, he would stomp his foot hard and the whole building shook...lol...and old Mrs.Tucker had "Time Will Pass, Will You"...up over the clock...lol...thought she put that there for me since I was always and still am a clock watcher. Hate being bored. Wish I had some school books from back then. It would light up my life to see you all again. Next year were coming home. For me the first time in 17 years. I'm coming to Upland even if I do get lost. Hope we can meet, again.

Brenda Nickerson - happy to see you here! Hope you are doing well. How is Robin? I was over your home often and went camping with your family up to their cabin when I was a kid. Robin and I were friends. Remember when the would hold the races in the park across from your house on Castle Ave. I think Albert Richardson reminded me on them when he mentioned Field Day. Gerry, I'm so glad my memories caused some of your own and brought smiles. No wonder I never saw you at the Nickersons (I hardly ever saw Audrey) you were always on the third floor. I have a photo on Ronnie Swingle with me and my brother Joe on Midway Road. Gerry and Kathy, you said your family moved to Claymont. I dated a girl from Claymont around 1979. She went to Claymont High and would have graduated in 1978. She had older brothers and sisters. Last name was Weir, they lived on Osage Ave in Radnor Green.

Hi Brenda. I sure remember you. I practically lived at your house for a few years till my parents moved us. I remember your parents and the pride they took in there home. Your parents were always busy tending the nest. Audrey and I stayed up on the third floor for the most part. I remember one day being there and the storm window fell down on my finger. Served me right shouldn't of been open anyway <smile>. I remember how fascinated I was when your Dad put the tv in the wall in your family room. That must of made an impact. Funny that others remember that also. Upland had the best Dances. Line Dancing was great back then. To fun!!! Audrey might remember that I would take all the boys Tie Clips. <laughing> I still have some of them...Anyone need to stake a claim?...lol...I heard a bunch of times " Give it back, its my dad's". To no Avail...Sorry for any spankings I may have caused guys. I'm not mean anymore...lol. This is so fun to Remember and so sad to think its all gone if it is. Hill Stree School was a blast. I always had to sit by Miss Tuckers Desk!!! That was Audreys fault for making me laugh...lol...I hope people keep spreading this site around. Its nice to look on here and see people from so long ago "Remebering with you".

We had 5 of us at that time in Upland. Rocky Kline, Ronnie Kline, Larry Kline, Kathy Kline and of course myself. You were one of Audreys brothers friends...since that house was large we just passed each other. Just from the things you wrote I feel we were there in the same moments at times. Hi Kathy, I don't remember your last name either. I was born in 1960 so my years living in "the projects" was from then till 1966 when we moved across town to Upland Ave. I do remember the name Junior Thompson. I have a 10 year older brother Joe that used to hang around with a guy named Ronny Swingle? And we knew the Richardsons and a ton of people whose names I can't recall. A big family that lived up on one of the side streets up towards Mrs. Laughlins store, a lot of brothers if I recall. When I was 6 and had moved to Upland Ave and started school I remember names like Judy Kirby, someone on here mentioned a Kirby. Of course the Whiteleys and Nickersons. Chris Ferguson, Steve Kroll, Keith Angle, Ada Albrand?, Vandergrifts. And my older brother knew the Woods - Rick, John, etc. and Mike and Hank Peterson. Mike was hurt in Vietnam. Sooo many names. Any of these ring any bells?

Hey Ken, Thanks for the memory joggers! I Remember all these things also! Getting those big fat pickles from Mcginnley's that had so much garlic in them. I remember pulling a wagon for the soda bottles to the store! We grew up on the corner of 4th and Roop in the project, I think, right across the street from the big hill everyone would sled down. Junior Thompson went under a car and crushed both legs one year! Did you play with my brothers Ronnie and Larry? I have a picture of them with the water hose in swim suits with Ronnie, Larry and Kenny on it. Would that be you? Three skinny little boys! I took the picture. Your last name doesn't ring a bell. Liz called me form Florida today whom is still my best friend; for almost forty-one years, and told me that Gerry Cline was asking about me. I was so excited to hear from her, it through me into a bold flash back. I can still remember the way that we laughed in 5th and 6th grade together. Gerry I would love to talk to you, so give me a call so that we can reminisce about old times. You can either get my number from Liz or have your sister give Liz your number for me to call. Either way, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks for the welcome Liz, so good to hear from you too. Wow this site is like a window back through time to reach out to old friends. Regarding Hill Street. Of course Mr. Makowski was my favorite teacher too! Man the Greek and Roman mythology - I loved his class. "Now this Zeus guy, he was like the king of the gods". And of course he always called me by my older brother's name before correcting himself. Some other things that pop in my head from back then - sneaking into the basketball gym that was behind a house up the street from Upland Baptist. the summer carnivals up at Our Lady of Charity. eating unpaid for cupcakes inside of Morton Prices grocery store and stuffing the wrappers between loafs of bread before going to the register and paying for the gallon of milk my mom had sent me down for. the Christmas Parades up on Edgemont Ave and standing there till your feet froze. the wooden floor at McGinnley's store. the 4th of July fireworks always ending with the two cannons firing at each other. buying penny candy up at Mrs. Laughlin's(?) store at teh top of Mid-Way road using the money from the empty soda bottles I took with me. Phil's barber shop. Walking down Hill Street with 100 feet of cut white material trailing me because my mom dressed me up as a mummy for Halloween using old sheets. WT Grants. the flood of 1972? sledding the hill across from Upland Baptist. Chicken Delight Pruitt's 5&10 .........I'll try to think of more.

Welcome, Kenny. Good to hear from you again. Also, best wishes to my dear friend Kathy Kline and her little sister Gerry. Great to hear from all of you. Let's keep this going, with each year I get more and more nostalgic for the "good old days" when life was simple, we just didn't know it at the time. It's nice to touch base sometimes, and Upland is home base to so many of us no matter how far we manage to roam. Until later, Liz

I see a lot of familiar and old friends names on this thread. Albert Richardson, I grew up two house from you when we lived on Midway Road in the project. Your older brother Richie was a good friend when my father died, he stayed with the family for days until my older brother Joe got home from Italy. Liz Whiteley, I was best buddies with your younger brother John. I remember when the flood hit in 73? I was at your house all the time as a kid. To any of the Nickersons - I was good friends with Robin, I remember the TV set your father had built into the wall in the rec room. Chris Ferguson - good to see you here. Did you ever get in touch with Joe Kerrigan? I think you said he was in Texas these days? I miss anyone? I went to Hill Street from 66-69, then Main Street from 69-71, then back to Hill Street for 1 year 71-72. My father died then and my mom moved us to Chichester. Ken

Hi All! Ron Mullen told his wife Ann to call me about this site. There are so many folks on here that I remember. I am so excited I called my sister Gerry and we just cried together! Soooo many memories! We've decided after the new year to plan a trip up there. Upland was a great place! We moved to Claymont,Delaware when I was 16 and we hated it! My parents thought they were doing the right thing. It was a disaster for my brothers. My brother Rocky died in a car accident at 29.I decided to get married too young and so did my sister. We are both doing great now I've been married to my second husband for 28 years. I work for a local TV station and had four children and now have 6 grandchildren.Gerry is single and has been for years. She has 2 grown kids and a grandaughter on the way.I would love to hear from anyone who remembers us. I remember Mr. Makowski I had such a secret crush on him! I thought he looked like Frank Sinatra! He would tell me, " Kline you are just like my wife dumb but beautiful". I am sorry to hear he is gone. Ms Jackson, Mr Makowski, and Mrs. Houston were my favorite teachers! (Mrs Stoots) Thats another story she slapped me across the face in front of the class because I couldn't get a math problem correct so I kicked her in the shins and called her a name. She was mean.Take Care, Kathy

Hi all, I went to Hill Street School (grades 1-8) and then to Eddystone High. Graduated in 1954 from Eddystone. I remember all the old teachers--Miss Pretty, who was principal, then Mrs. Booth who was my grandmother, and Miss Jackson. Sorry to read she died of cancer. We lived at the top of 9th Street. Sitting here while we are all covered with ice, I remember the great sledding we had--starting at the top of the hill on Main St. between 8th & 9th, turning the corner at 9th St., and if we were lucky going all the way to Mulberry turning right and making it to 8th St. Needless to say there wasn't much traffic at that time. Hill Street was a great school. We had good teachers. When we moved to Rising Sun, it was a lot like Upland before all the development. Now we are being developed and losing the small town flavor. I'm probably one of the oldest ones on this site, but would love to hear from some classmates. I know some have passed away. Janie Laderer from 10th St., who lives in Pottstown at the time of your last response, you use to come over and play with my son, Eddie, before you went to school. It was a good time when kids were allowed to roam the neighborhood and didn't have to be couch potatoes.

Hi Cathy, I am the second of six kids (Harpster) My dad died in 67, when I was almost 12. It was really a hard time for me and the rest of us. My mom married again and is still married happily. We are all married, my brother Ed does not have children, unfortunatly. We moved to Delaware in 1970. We lost our sister Barbara to cancer 8 years ago. But other than that, so far so good. Recently I just found my cousins, that I need to make physical contact with. (on my dad's side) this is exciting to me, I remember them and am looking forward to seeing my dad's brother. My dad always said he wanted to see his kids graduate school, and he didn't get that chance. But I wish he could have met his grandchildren more. I still miss him terribly! God has his reasons for what happened, and I trust God. My dad didn't have to suffer and for that I am thankful. Write again and thanks for remembering us! It feels great to know people remember "the Harpster's" That part of my life will never be forgotten!!

I LOVE reading this site. I left Upland 30 years ago and moved to Virginia but every time I jump on here and read the messages, it's like being transported back to the fun and wonderful time I had in Upland with my family - Ron, Skip and John Mullen, the whole Linzey Clan and my sisters Ginny and Arlene Mansley (I was Cathy Mansley back then).Even having to work in the family store, on 6th Street, seems like fun now as I look back. Linda and Pat Herko were the two nicest people I have yet to encounter, as were their parents. I really miss all the fun times with the Rumford girls - Nancy, Linda and Mickey. There were so many wonderful, fun loving people - Buddy and Bobby Alexander, Mike Hunter and his family, Donnie Thorton and his family, Kathy O'Byrne, Rich Swallow, Bobby Love and family, Earl and Debbie Owens, Ace and Janis, "Eightball", Louie Hawthorne, Richard Paris, the Harpsters and on and on. There were too many to name. AND Miss English!! I can still conjegate any verb!! I'd really love to hear from or about any of these people and how they are doing today. Noticed all the Harpsters posting - Edna and Ed Harpster stood up for my parents, Gladys Linzey and Ken Mansley, when they got married in 1950. They still talk about how sad it was that he died so young. I know they would love to hear about the family.

what a great walk down memory lane . . I used to be Connie Meiser, married my high school sweetheart John Baxter from 6th & Upland Ave. I lived in what is now called Auburn Village - we called it the project! I graduated from Hill St in '63 and went to Eddystone until the closed the doors and was a member of the first graduating class of Ridley High '67. John and I have been married for 37 years - we've lived in Brookhaven for 24 years. We had a Hill St Reunion for the classes of '63 and '64 back in the mid 80's. Remember Chucky Richardson - he was in the Air Force stationed in DC and drove up for it. Other names that come to mind are Doris Stinson (who unfortunately is no longer with us) Jeanie Hartman, Linda Herko, Joe Greenwalt (can you believe he is now a cop - he was so BAD!! - just kidding, Joe), Rick Swallow, Richard Parris, Flossie Smith, Cliff Herbster, Kathy Crooks, Sheila Bernero, Mina Linaweaver, Debbie Harmon oh, too many names to mention. Would love to attend a Reunion. Miss Jackson was the best English teacher ever!

Hello to everyone. I just wanted to say what a big part of life sports played in Upland. What a proud town. We played every form of baseball. At the ballpark it was distance out in centerfield, hitting towards the infield. You could actually play with 2 guys. Backstop/fence ball too. A lot of pickup games over the summer. Heck, we used to play hardball on the blacktop at Hill Street school. I remember one day Wayne Bell hit one off Bixler's roof at 10th and Mulberry. The best was playing on a team. Little league baseball was great. Loved teener league. I had a lot of really great coaches. They really made it great for us. I ended up playing some form of ball until about 40. Coached little league for 10 years. Some of those coaches I remember...Roy Berle...Wayne Brownhill...Butch (Leroy) Richardson...Tom Kleber...Bob Watson.....Tommy Caraffa...Ben Depkowski.sp?...Hughey Moore. All from the Upland AC. What floors me when I think about it is that not a single one of them ever had a kid on the team. Thanks to all of you. You really made it special for us. Lastly.....I always remember taking that beaten path to Paris' house to use that spigot for a drink. Bye for now....Frank

I spent one year at Hill Street School - 8th grade in '66/'67. The last time I drove by there it was a playground. It's nice to see the old picture - it brings back a bunch of memories. When I was there it was woods and fields where the shopping center is. Merton Price at the bottom of the hill - my mom liked shopping there because they would deliver the groceries. Dirty John's Steak Shop and Jimmy Gallen's for the pinball machine. Smoking cigarettes on the McGinley Store steps. Finding dirty magazines in the Sally woods. We lived in the project "little houses" on Midway next to the Belays. The Bruni's were around the corner. Swimming down at the falls. The big rope swing that some kid named Jay climbed way up to put up. Hanging up at the Seminary with Bruce Graf and Bob Caton. Walking to Chester on Saturdays just for something to do. Pooling our money to buy one order or fries at the Woolworths at the Brookhaven Shopping Center. Group youth outings with Reverend McGlinley where it kind of felt like a group date when we would go bowling or whatever -Jeannie Daugherty was the girl I liked to think I was kind of going out with even though it was a group. Robin Scott was a friend. I had the pleasure of dating his sister Elizabeth (Bunny) some years later. Delivering the Bulletin - almost nobody subscribed. I'd walk all over Upland to deliver 25 papers. Everybody read the Chester Times. Clem Makowski swinging around in the middle of a lecture and throwing a chalkboard eraser at some kid's head. Mr. Richardson - a couple of us went to his apartment on a Saturday once so some reason, and we thought it was so cool that he had Playboy magazines on the coffee table. I guess I learned something that year but those are the two things that stand out as memories of Hill Street School.

I am looking for anyone who went to school with my dad. His name was Francis Vail. You may have called him Frannie or Frank. He had a brother named Carlton. They lived at 838 Upland Ave. Not sure what years he would have attended Hill St. School. His Aunt Margie and Uncle Bud lived on Hill Street also. My dad is not with us anymore. He died in 1980 of Malignant Melanome cancer. He was 42. I remember sitting on my grandmother's front porch til late at night with no fear. I loved Upland. I remember when I was really little that there was a supermarket at the fork of Upland Ave. and Hill Street. When I got older, I saw they had put a lumber yard in the building. I also rememeber a laudry mat at the bottom of Hill St. There was also a pharmacy. I remember in the early '70's a flood and the baseball field was flooded up to the catcher's cage top. I remember a mobile home being towed to the top of the Acme Supermarket parking lot so it would not be ruined in the flood. Anyone who can email me with any information about my dad, I would greatly apprecite it. I would love to see old school photos. I think I have one some place of him. When I find it, I will post it. Thanks for listening and God Bless.

From Mickey's brother, 9-11-06 Jim & Earl, I know you've been writing back & forth with Mickey, but I don't know if he told you that he's been very sick. He's been putting up a brave front, but things have gone from bad to worse the last month or so. His illness is terminal, and we don't expect him to last much longer. He's back in the hospital, but he will be home with hospice care probably later this week. The pain medication keeps him pretty groggy, and it's difficult to talk to him because he is very confused; he's also very weak and it's a real strain for him just to speak. I'm writing to you both just in case you've been wondering why you haven't heard from him. He's a great guy, and there are a lot of people who will really miss him. I'm lucky to have a brother like him. -------------------------------------------------- From Mickey's brother: 9/16/2006 Mickey passed away in the early morning hours of Sept. 16th. We were all with him and it was a very peaceful passing. He will be greatly missed. ------------------------------------------------ Mickey and his family are in our prayers -- Earl.

Great to see a page dedicated to Upland, PA. I have many memories of growing up on 8th and Main Streets and attending both Main Street and Hill Street schools through 8th grade. I remember the old "gang," Archie Albrand, Bruce White, Harry Angle, Bill Yasic, Bobby Mullaney, Milt Melville, and Danny McKay. I also remember great times and the fun of living not too far from the old woods behind Hill Street School. Upland, was a great experience but yes, we have all grown and changed. My wife and I currently live in Florida where I am Superintendent of a school. I am grateful for my early years and remember, Merton Price, Jimmy Jones Sub Shop, and yes, Clem Makowski and Mrs. Courtright...and Mable Jackson. In fact, it was Mable Jackson who inspired me to make education a priority in my life. Thanks, Miss Jackson.....I went on to complete my bachelor's degree, two master's and a Ph.D. Thanks!!! Just checking in on the latest posts. Still working on the "time machine" to take us alll back......lol A few memories.....jump in anytime........ Miss Tucker, (Writing and Aritmetic)..Miss Smith, Miss Banks, and Ms. TUTTLE....my first grade teacher. She had a bad arm and could hardly use her hand. The Crozer Hospital June Fete....Borlands Pharmacy, Meron Price with the fruit baskets lined up across the front....(great for an after school snack)... Kickball and "jail jail" on the hill street school playground that now looks SOOOO small!!. Planting trees for "Arbor Day" and singing songs on the front lawn of Hill Street School. Being a "Safety" on the playground and on the street corners before and after school. Chuck Taylor black hightops and "Dungarees".....(Now "jeans and Tennis shoes"....Yuck.....who plays tennis anyway!?...lol Every Mom on the block was "your mom" and had unwritten permission to scold you if you misbehaved and kept the block Mom network alive. Remember when they used to teach us about brushing your teeth properly and would give you red tablets to chew on that would leave stains where you didn't brush properly? Selling flower seeds packets for the school. The huge aquarium in Mr. Emory' classroom where we raised the white mice for science class. Hope to hear from more Upland Alumni on this site. Keep the memories coming!

Hello to everyone from Hill St. and Eddystone schools. Just found this page and remember almost all who signed on and posted a lot of names. Sure brought back some memories. I lived on West 22nd st. just inside the Upland line. I used to hang around with Gary Nygard, Archie, Rich Birely, ....cut thru Blyler funeral home and then thru the Mansion next to the Armory to get to Hill St school. Just heard from Carol Silva by email and would like to hear from anyone who remembers me and would like to e-mail. Attended the Hill St reunion back in the 80's at the Upland firehouse. What a blast from the past that was!! Was a brat back then and attended many detentions with Mabel Jackson. I remember the market (Merton-Price?) at the bottom of Hill st. Grabbed many apples (one at a time) on the way home from school. Also remeber dirty John's steak shop. Stopped eating there after seeing ashes fall on the grill from a cigarette in his mouth while he was cooking my steak sandwich!! I remember the dances at Upland Boro Hall, St. James and Eddystone High. Went to Eddystone and then to Ridley for senior year in "67". Mickey Conners, still see your sister "Ginger" as she is friends with my wife. Well, gotta go....hope everyone is well and thanks for all the memories from the posts.

Sorry I didnt get back to you sooner...but I only check back here every couple months to read the new entries. I hope everyone is well. Please keep sharing your "memories" here. It is great to read all the fun times that were had and shared. Sledding on"Dead Mans Hill" over at the Crozer Seminary. My first job was at Borland's Pharmacy at 8th and Upland Ave. I was 14 and got my working papers from Main Street School to take the job stocking shelves and sweeping up the store for $1.00 an hour! I also had to put the great big two ring binders back that were used to refer to when re-filling customers prescriptions. They were in pigeon hole racks in the pharmacy in alphabetical order. The pharmacists would pull the book, fill the prescription, then toss the binder onto the floor for me to have to pick up and put back later! Borlands was also a good place to pickup those "Friendship rings" when you wanted to go steady with a girl......lol. I bought a few of those!! OK.....Your Turn!!

HI TO ALL, I have been reading all the messages that have been sent in and I figured I could add some info. So here goes. Many of the names I saw probably went to school with my two older brothers Bob and Jack Hartman. Jack is no longer with us but Bob is still living in Ridley Park. I was a number of years behind them when I went to Hill Street and Main Street schools. Many names that I read brought back so many memories. Linder Ferguson wow what a memory you have. You were a year behind me in school. Do you all remember Liane Ferguson? She lived on Hill Street. How about Shiela Bunero. Chucky Richardson on Church Street who went out with Sandy McClintock on Mulberry Steet. Adrienne Johnson on Mulberry Street. Jean Yeck, Doris Stinson (who was my best friend), Debbie Harman, Linda Herko, Bill Krug, Rich Paris, Rich Swallow, Kathy Swallow, Chuck and Bob Love (lived on 11th St.) Ron Carrafa, Floss Smith, Ruth Smith, Tom O'Byrne, Kathy O'byrne, Joanne Whitaker, Maryann Kirby, Ann Blizzard, Diane Blizzard, Dave Ott, Linda Sension, Allan Johnson, Cheryl Hamilton, Bernie Zoranski,--Mickey I knew your sister Ginger, then there was Ruth Smith, Bob Cardwell, Craig Schnee, Connie Meiser, John Baxter. I think that is enough for now. I lived in Upland until I was 23 when I got married. Moved to Aston for a few years and then moved to Bethel in 1977. My Mom lived in Upland from 1947? to 1999. Unfortunately, I never see anyone. We did have an 8th grade reunion quite a number of years ago. I guess that was the last time I saw many of the people that I went to school with. I too am sorry to hear Clem Makowski passed. He was a great teacher. Mabil Jackson best English teacher. Never had a problem throughout high school with English. How about Mrs. Smith (science teacher). How about the parties, sleep overs, dances. Kids don't seem to have the fun we did growing up. Boy do I sound old. I hung out a Jimmy's store on 10th and woodside ave. and also at 6th and main. One more thing, I do remember Gary McDermitt and Frank Heckert. Hey, we lived in a very close community. Everyone knew everyone else. It was great growing up. By the way Glen I knew your brother Joe. Hope to hear from anyone who would like to send me an e-mail. Jean

Hey, alot of names I remember here, Leon I remember you! Carol of course I remember you! I was Debbie's friend, used to spend the night at your house. Your mom was the best!! Man! the memories Upland hold! Of course I hold all memories close b/c of my dad passing when I was in 6th grade. Mr. Makowski used to tell me all the time that I would get used to being called "Harpster" instead of Cheryl, when I got in the Army. I never did go into the Army tho'. I live in Middletown, Delaware, have four daughers, married for 27years, and I have a 20 month old grand daughter (who I totally adore!) and a new grand son! My mom is still very healthy and still very pretty! Out of six of us kids, Edna Marie, Cheryl, Barbara, Nancy, LuAnn and Eddie Jr. Only one is gone now. Barb passed away from Cancer 8 years ago. We miss her terribly! Anyway, I do miss Upland, when we moved, I was so depressed. My mom couldn't understand what we missed, but playing ciggerette tag and pies in the middle of the street is miss worthy. My old friends! I really do miss a few of them! Debbie Silva, Janice Bailey, Debbie Young, Debbie Mistachio just to name a few. I loved 4th of July in the ball park at night with the fireworks, I remember watching ball games on the bleachers, with Ray Walls (got to hold his hand one night!) and Laughhead! Can't remember his first name. I remember Ramona Merwin! Does anyone remember that my dad was the Cheif of Police? Oh yeah, I lived next door to the Kirby's on 7th Street! I babysat for Penny Herman, my dad was friends with Bob Smith. These memories are so important to me, and all of you that write here are such great memories for me! Glad someone started this! I love it!! Patty Green, that's another neighbor I had. Joe Malone, Audrey Nickerson, (the guy I just loved in sixth grade, must mention him) Tom Quinn! Sixth grade and on, was rough, wouldn't want to do that again! Very confusing time for me as you can imagine. Oh yeah, I did write to Richard Breeze! So that was cool! This is just great, I will be stopping back again! My email is sneakdit@verizon.net WRITE, PLEASE!

Hi everyone. Was working on some history about my Dad, former Upland Police Chief Ed Harpster, and stumbled onto this site. Couldn't remember many names because after Daddy died and Mom remarried we moved to Delaware, most of us were still pretty young. Does anyone remember anything about our Dad, Ed Harpster? Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. I won't post any info here but would be happy to hear from anyone and I know my Mom and Pop (Edna & Warren Watt) would love to hear how anyone from Upland is doing! Thanks Much! Nancy

Hello to all, Just passing through and thought i would put my memories in. First off if anyone knows of George Hand, lived on Lane-B in the Projects, please let him know i would like to contact him. I was just sitting in my office at home minding my own business and laughing at some of the things we would do on a whim, like following the tracks all the way to lindville orchards, just to play Picketts charge in the orchard on the hill, and in the fall would get free apples and cider from the press barn. Does anyone remember the day Rocky Laughlen rock a fastball out of the park to the municipal building parking lot and hit the windshield of a car. what a shot. Thats all. Be good, be well, be good to oneanother. Al Richardson P.S. Rember the all nighters on legion hill after Christmas when everyone would gather the Christmas trees and have a bonfire going and sledding by the light. you gotta love it. we would be arrested for any of the above today!

Hi All I too am very sorry to hear of Clem Makowski's passing. I think I may still have a couple of those "GOOSEGGS" he used to give out with that big ring he wore. His desk used to be in the BACK of the classroom and he would sneak up on you if you were talking in class and give you a crack on the noggin with that big ring. I only needed a couple of those to get the message. After that... all he would have to say is..."Mr. Greenwalt.....do you want a goosegg"? and I snapped right to as did the whole class. I think the schools need a few more Mr Makowsi's around to straighten out the spoiled kids in schools today. I was afraid to go home and tell Mom that I got paddled because she would say..."Well, you must have done something wrong then".....you're grounded" So, Id walk around with a sore butt and not say anything. Between Mr. Makowski's ring, and Jesse Richardson's paddle, I never knew what end was hurting the most!...LOL....but I thank them and all the staff at Hill street school , not only for my education, but for the discipline and caring that was handed out as well. Anyone else out there have any memories of Hill Street?

How many of you can still recite your auxiliary verbs, Oh Captain My Captain, or The Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers by Juaquin Miller. I still can thanks to Ms Jackson. After hearing every kid in class recite them and then writing them in detention until they became part of my psych I could finally recite them myself. She was great for making us keep notebooks and outlines and I learned all of the parts of speech from her. She was tenacious and wonderful tho she seemed an ogre at the time. It is fun to see that some of the guys posting here were her prime targets during the early 60s. And Paul Mokowsky taught me to play baseball without throwing the bat after a hit. Upland was wonderful. It was a place for walking, exploring, experimenting and it kept me out of the house all of the time. Everyone had a familiar face and a reputation to either flee too or to flee from. The colorful characters like Lard Ass Milly and that old run down house on Main Street that you could cut through the yard to get to Lane K or the Third Street Hill was always a fun place to see. Those old ladies used to hang their humungous peach colored old lady underwear on the line and we would giggle about it and make wisecracks about the size. They were probably some of the sweetest old ladies in town. I was a project kid and drove through it a few years ago and down to the museum on Race Street. It is fun to think that Martin Luther King Jr was right there at Crozier when we didnt even know him. I would really like to find John Swanson, Barbara Bruni, Walter Wanko, Kerry Grasser or Ruth McClintock. She was the first girl I ever kissed. It happened right at 3rd and Griffith on a cold winter night and I think one of our noses was running. hehehe. And as for Mickey Conners, we had a fight one day and ole Mickey swung and hit me right on the Adam's apple. I didnt think I would ever catch my breath again. What a wimp I was. Well, it was all fun... cept for the tears. Hi to you all. I did get a letter from Skipper Paiges sister. She said he had passed away while living in Phoenix. He was one great friend who also taught me a lot. Tom

I am surprised that no one has commented on the passing of Clem Makowski. Mr. Makowski has always been one of my Hero's!! He was a great teacher, and a positive role model with a zero tolerance approach. He would get your attention real quick if you misbehaved in his class, and yet he had a fatherly side too, he cared about his students (his kids as he use to say), my heart felt condolences go out to the Makowski family. Clem was the Best

Stumbled across the Upland page. So good to remember old days. Upland was a wonderful place to grow up in and make friends. Jim Litteral: Are you the brother of Jerry? Jerry and I played Little League Baseball behind Our Lady of Charity. When Jerry moved, my Dad would pick him up, to finish out the season, and All Star practice. Frank Yeck! Is this Nicky Yecky, who I know? Mickey Conners, when's the last time someone called you HARP! I remember Harp, playing Backstop, Fence Ball, and "Bases" in the Ballpark! Chuck Love: My Dad either bought a car from you, or you from him, so long, shaking out the cobwebs. George Warren: I still remember the day when you told us during a game of fenceball, that you and your family were moving to New Jersey. A sad day it was. To see your name 43 years later, is so good. Looks like you are still in Jersey. Feel free to E-mail anytime! Upland will Shine Tonight!!!!!! Earl Clough VA27Haint@aol.com

Hi Gang. Hope everyone had a great Christmas season. Happy New Year and health and happiness to all. Just reading the messages and wanted to add a few things. Stanley Zgliezewski (Jr) passed away this Christmas eve from Lung Cancer. He was 56 or 57 I believe. His parents still live on West 22nd street. I went to the viewing and saw his sister Kathy and brother Earl. They were my neighbors growing up in Upland and are very nice people. Also...Hey Rich Jenkins. How are things? I just read your message and noted that you now live in Eureka. I was there this past summer. I flew into Oakland Calif. with my girlfriend and another couple and we rented new Harleys and toured up PCH through and Washington State. After checking out the Cascade Mt range, Crater Lake and all the other great spots we cruised back down through NAPA valley and back to Oakland. Two weeks and 2200 miles. Beautiful out there! If I had known you were so close I would have looked you up. I actually stayed over at the Best Western in Eureka. Oh well....maybe next trip. Happy New year to all Upland Alumni!

I was researching a project for scool when I came across this website. I was struck when I saw so many familiar names. I lived on the Pusey Plantation with my Mother, brothers and Stepfather for 6 years. Prior to that my Grandmother, Margaret Beauchamp (Peg) was the curator for about ten years.

I saw Dennis Beauchamp post who's Mom (Peg) Beauchamp was also listed. Isn't it something to have two wonderful women not only sharing the same town but name. I also noticed Kim Hickey's name. Kim I remember you from Notre Dame. Additionally, I saw a post from Carol Silva and wondered if you were not related to Chris Silva, daughter of Judge Silva, who also went to Notre Dame. So much has changed. I visited the Pusey Plantation the other day and it's heart-breaking, as well as the immediate surrounding areas. It was a wonderful place to live at one time and today there are still those that uphold that sense of pride that existed among home and business owners alike. It was great seeing this site and I hope to hear back from some of you folks.

Right on, Mickey!! The things you mentioned in your last msg.,are things I remember well! Remember the underground shacks we built in the woods? Use to have tunnels and all. remember going into the sewers and walking thru. the "pipe line"? we use to steal the iron balls that they lit up at construction sites and took them into the tunnel. How about the Orchard in back of Main Street School? ate alot of green apples and got sick. Oh, yes, Billy Kane. Never forget the headline---"UPLAND BOY DROWNS IN CITY RIVER" He was older than us. 16 when he died.

Memories: Upland was a wonderful place to grow up. Walking around town at night and not being afraid...of anything or anyone. The ballpark and playground on 6th st. Playing with the kids from 6th, 5th, and Church Sts. Playing IN the street and not being afraid of getting run over or shot at. Oh, for the good old days.

I was looking through the messages and saw one from Mickey Connors and Jimmy Litteral. Boy did they bring back memories and I thought I'd throw out some more names and places in Upland. By the way Dirty Joh's wife was from Germany. Here goes... John, Joe and Dominick Festa; Jimmy Brown; Billy, Paul and Dan Strain; Jay and Butch Jones (killed in and accident); Kenny and Jimmy Lynch; Skip and Denny Walls; Wojohoskis (too many to list); Billy French; Bobby Scone; Jimmy and Bobby Tarbutton....Jimmy Gallens; Mom and Pops; Walls Sandwich Shop; Sprigfield Bottling Co. (best Ginger Ale); Ship N' Shore; Mansion (started 1st grade); Unwed Mother's Home; Triangle Engineering; swimming at Big Rock, Falls, and Chester Park; Allcut Apartments; Upland Boat Yard; Upland Athletic Club; Marine Club; I hope some of these names and places jog your memories. I'll leave now but not before asking two questions???????? Did they ever find out what caused the fire at Eddystone High School? There was a girl in our class and I think it was at Hill street. Her name was Pat ? and she lived in Marcus Hook/Ridge. She was murdered, did they ever find her killer?

Wow! Just got done reading all these messages and what fond memories! I grew up in Upland and just today my sister and I took a "down memory lane" trip there! I went to Hill Street for 7th grade and remember all those teachers well! Some of my boyhood pals were Mickey Connors, Jimmy Albrand, Jimmy Belay . I played little league ball with Robert Love. Also, noticed Frank Yeck asked if anyone remembered him. Frank, I do! remember me and Rosemary Scott? We went to a party of hers together! If any one remembers me, let me know!

I graduated from Collingdale in 1974, I married Karen Byre from 6th street in Upland who graduated in 1973 from Collingdale. Hi Gang...Just changed my e-mail adddress to Det57@Verizon.net. Hello to Richard Jenkins...I do remember you. We used to also hang out at "Dead Mans Hill" in the seminary. I also remember Merton Price's store at the foot of Hill Street, Borland's Pharmacy at 8th and Hill street. That was my very first job there when I was 14 years old and got my "working papers" at Main St School. I used to sweep the floors and front walk, stock the shelves, and put away the prescription binders when the parmacists was done filling the prescriptions. I also remember the Pops store across from Gallens at 10th and Woodside. We used to go there at lunch time. I also remember that the "armory" on 24th street was the place where anyone that "Called somebody out" to fight went to settle their differences after school. The crowd would gather around and watch the two "fighters" do their thing for a few minutes until one would say they had "had enough" and the fight was over....many times shaking hands after. No guns or knives .....just fists. Times sure have changed. Selling flower seed packets to rasie money for school fundraisers......raising white mice in a huge aquariam tank in Mr. Emory's class.... and getting swatted on occassion by Mr. Richardson when I acted up. I never told my mother that I got paddled when I went home or she would say "You must have deserved it" and grounded me for a few days.

To Donna Thompson...., I am the same that lived next to Stan Zglesewski on W. 22nd street. I have an older brother named Joe. I lived at 415 W. 22nd St 4 doors away from Stan Earl and Kathy. Kathy is now living in the 300 block of West 22nd street. Stan's parents STILL live at the same house. Very nice people. I have been in law enforcement for the past 29 plus years.....first 4 years in Parkside Borough and then to the County Detectives (Del. Co. CID). I really enjoy reading the e-mails and memories from everyone on this site. I havent been on here for quite some time but will make it a point to check in more often. I hope everyone is doing well. Take Care and be safe!

I attended Upland School and graduated from Hill Street in 1959 before moving to California. I lived at 318 Griffith Street in the project and was best friends with Barbara Bruni, Johnny Swanson, Walter Wanko, George Grow and Kerry Grasser. Tommy and Galen Mitchell, JB Jones and Barry Jones ran with my brother Larry. I treasured Thelma Houston as my 4th grade teacher, survived Helen Draper and remember Mr Ichenger used to cuss at kids loud enough to hear him all over the building. Paul Moukouski was fantastic as a teacher and the blond Mr Moukouski was teh girls knight in armor. I can still recite parts of The Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers, Oh Captain my Captain and poems that Mabel Jackson forced into our hearts and minds. My uncle, Warren Whitaker taught science and was principal for a while. Barbra Bruni (Babs) and I used to sneak into the dances at the firehouse when we were underage but simply loved to dance. I have tried thru the years to find her but only knew her grandma, Ida Farrs name and I know that Ida passed away long ago. All of my PA relatives are long gone. I often think of school when it was in the Mansion, then the new building, the trees being blown over by Hurricane Hazel and the local stores and hoagie shops we shared. Other names and faces pass in my memory and I wonder if anyone is still around like Emma Quintin or Bertha Ryan, Jerry McGuigan or Skipper Page. Old Mrs Magroirity did a great job preparing me in math and there was some man teacher that failed half the class in 6th grade seperating us for ever. Billy Green drowned at the swimming hole in the Salvation Army area off Race Street. I remember he was an only son and try to honor his memory even here. Upland holds many many wonderful memories. I was a school teacher for 31 years and attribute my career to those wonderful teachers on the second floor of Hill Street. There was one neighbor, Mrs Shoop, who used to treat me to lunch if I would go to the store during lunch hour. She was very kind and one of my favorite people. Hi to any who remember me. Please write anytime. Sorry if I left out any names as you were all important in making me the man I am today, even if you were one of the meanies that picked on me. Tommy Dyson

I attended Hill Street school from 1950 until 1955 when I moved to Lancastr, Pa. My maiden name was Hullihen. I lived at 405 West 21st. street. I had Ms. Burger for first grade, Ms. Gardner for second grade, Ms. Stutz for third grade, Ms. Courtright for 4th grade and Ms. Banks for 5th grade. I recall Merton Price store and a little penny candy store which I think was at the bottom of the hill. My sister and I and our best friends, Connie and Cathy Hendrickson, who lived across the street used to walk to school together every day, often taking the short cut through a woods with the remains of an old estate we called "the path". We also climbed that hill in all weather, slipping backward in the snow two steps for every one we took and being sent to the principal for being late. I remember the wonderful Xmas and Thanksgiving programs we put on at some building off campus and all the parents were invited. I recall the "safety" called "fish" who helped us cross a very busy street near W. 23rd street. I remember the play ground in the back was all black asphalt with steps leading out to a sidewalk. My sister attended all the way to 6th grade and had one of a set of twins for a teacher who used to tell bible stoies using cut out figures on a flanel board. I remember some of my classmates: Trudy DeMarco. She had peirced ears and I was very intrigued by them since I had never seen them before and wasn't allowed to have them. I finally had my ears peirced in college (UConn 1967). Another student was (and I don,t know how to spell his last name) Joey Doskosill who emigrated from what was then known as Czechoslovakia. Both Trudy and Joey were in my 5th grade class with Mrs. Banks (1955). Joey was my first "crush". Jeffrey Griffith was a very bright student in that class whose father was studying at the Crozer Seminary which was located directly down the street from my house. We used to sled on "Dead Man's Hill in Crozer Seminary. We spent many summer days playing in Crozer Seminary, turning over rocks in the streams looking for crawfish and climbing trees. Another student at Hill street was Eleanor Caldwell, a very bright student. Dorothy Reid was a friend of mine in 5th grade. There was also in 5th grade a girl named Judy who wrote left handed and would suck air in through her teeth which made a sucking noise as she wrote. I also remember Kay Beth who lived on West 22nd street, who was an A student. I remember her mother inviting teachers to lunch. She was in my second grade class with Ms. Gardner and then moved. I recall another girl whose name I can't recall but she lived on West 23rd street and had a parakeet. Facing my house, on the left lived Joey Pigano. I recall the yearly carnival held on the lawn of the Crozer Hospital. Crozer Cemetary (with gravestones, not to be confused with the Seminary) was adjacent to my back yard. Do any of you who had Mrs. Banks remember how she would cover the board with notes about each state and we were required to copy the notes into blue notebooks and memorize them for a test. I remember when the little cafeteria was installed and you could order milk, sandwich, soup, and icecream. Mrs. Banks class was held in that room for awhile. I remember the 1st grade reading groups: cardinals, bluejays, etc., and the desks bolted to the floor with empty holes for inkwells. I remember selling chocolate covered Easter eggs door-to-door for school fund raisers every year. I used to eat as many, or probably more, than I sold and my Mother had to pay for them. I have so many fond memories of my childhood in the neighborhood and at school. I just looked up the school on a fluke, and couldn't believe that this site exists. I've been trying to locate Cathy Hendrickson and Dorothy Reid. Also there was a Linda Bowers who lived with her Aunt next door to Joey Doskosill's house for a time. Please let me know if you have any idea how to contact them. Also please share your memories with me if you were in any of my classes. My name was Holly Hullihen. My sister's was Eileen Hullihen. I was at Hill St. from 1950 to 1955 and Eileen was there from 1949 until 1955.

Do any of you 'Uplanders' know the whereabouts of Bill Bailey, son of Willametta Bailey - or any of the Bailey family. I've just learned that Bill may be a cousin, and I've been trying to locate him. I never went to Ridley but was in the last class to graduate from Eddystone Lived in Upland at 1040 Main St, went to elementary there and Hill St from app.,1961-1963 I also remember Makowski, Jackson who were both great teachers and of couse Jessie Richarson as a matter of fact when my son was in school up there Jessie was the principal! There were a few messages that I saw and do remember the same things, such as Jimmy's at the bottom of 10th street, Borland's drug store, the firehouse when it was on the water before they built the new one. My dad, Jim Thompson was on the board of health and also vice president of the school board. I been trying to locate Linda Mills, Caroly Wood, Doane Dimayo or anyone else from Upland we moved to Florida in 1977 hope to hear back from someone

Hill St. School was the greatest, Upland was the best place to grow up back then. i lived in the projects at 405 midway road. Started Main St. School in 63. Mrs Brey was the school nurse. i remember her taking us to the dentist in her car (COOL). My favorite teacher was Mrs. Houston, then she went to Hill St. to teach English, where i had her for home room. Went to Hill St. in 70-71, then moved to Fla., joined the navy in 76, got married and moved to Jersey! If any one rembers me please E-Mail.

I went to Hill Street school from 1960 to 1968. My first grade teacher was Ms. Tuttle. I also remember Clem Makowski, Mr. Richardson, Miss Banks, Miss Yeamen, Miss Horne, Miss Tucker, as well as Ms, Smith and Ms. Jackson. A LOT of great memories there. I watched when they tore the building down and almost cried. I still ride by there once in a while and check it out. The playground looks SOOO small now! The trees in the front area are still standing that we planted for "Arbor Day" We were bused to Collingdale in 1969 before the Chester-Upland merger. Catholic schools had nothing over ole Hill Street teachers with the paddles, pointers, and class ring "goosegg" from Mr. Makowski and some of the other teachers. We need to have teachers (and parents)be able to dicipline the kids again. They are getting way out of control! Hope to hear from some old classmates.

I WAS GLAD I NEVER HAD TO GO TO MAIN STREET SCHOOL. AND WHO EVER WROTE ABOUT MS. JACKSON AND TEACHING ENGLISH "YOU A RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT " SHE WAS THE BEST ENGLISH TEACHER EVER. SORRY I NEVER GOT A CHANCE TO TELL HER WHEN SHE WAS LIVING. WHEN I WENT ON TO RIDLEY I KNEW MORE ABOUT ENGLISH THEN ALL OF THOSE PARKERS JUST BECAUSE OF MISS JACKSON.

I started school at Hill St. in 1958. Had Mrs. Stillwell for 1st grade. I remember her trying to teach me to write with my right hand, when I was definitely left handed. Left Hill St. school after 8 years in June of 1966, and then was part of the first class to attend Collingdale High School thru 1970. I spent 6th grade at the Main St. school. Remember Hill St. did not have a 6th grade, and Main St. did not have 7th and 8th grades. I remember teachers like Miss Yeaman - 3rd grade, Mrs. Courtwright - 4th grade, Mrs. Banks - 5th grade Miss Spengamen(SP) the meanest teacher in the Upland school district - 6th grade MR. Richardson, Mr. Makowski, Mrs. Smith, Miss Jackson, Miss Tucker these were all 7th and 8th grade teachers at that time. Who remembers Mrs. Bray the school nurse. Do you remember marching from Hill St. to Main St. for the Hobby Show, Science Fair, and Christmas Concerts. I lived just across the street from the school on Mulberry St. I have many fond memories of my time spent at Hill ST. School

I graduated from Hill St. in '60 and St. James in '64. Love to hear from any schoolmates. I'll always be grateful to our English teacher in 7th and 8th grade, Miss Mable S. Jackson. I've made my living from writing. Without her I would have starved long ago. Every kid deserves to be taught by dedicated professionals like her.

The Reinhardts formally of Griffith St. Upland Ave, and 9th St. in Upland say hello to any and all you may remember them. We left Upland so long ago....August of 73, never to look back for a new life in the Northern Arizona Mountain Town of Prescott. The cowboys say Preskit, like buscuit. We have been out in Arizona ever since. Just was back in PA in July and was able to take in some of the sights again..So much has changed, homes boarded up, schools closed....Kathy owned beauty shops at her home on Upland Ave. and on 9th St. Barbara and Chuck attended Main Street and Hill Street Schools. Michael attended Holy Ghost Ukranian Catholic School on Third St. in Chester. Some of our ole friends from Upland have emailed us....still would love to hear from anyone from back in the late sixties early 70's. We have since made friends with other PA transplants out here in Arizona, they all survived the great flood of June of 71...when Agnes blew through and washed our stuff away..Upland was under water...hope to hear from some current or former Uplanders....God Bless...
