The mass was at the church (2nd & Norris) 11:00am followed by a lunch social at the school. I attended from '63 to '70. My father Frank was on the committee that secured funds for the new building. Sister Rachel confiscated my Chinese skipping rope because I went to get it from my desk after eating lunch and apparently I wasn't supposed to go back to the classroom. She never gave it back...in fact she took it apart, all those lovely coloured elastics, and gave them to her students to take art or something home. One time my little box of broken crayon pieces fell on the carpet in the classroom and I felt bad because it caused a stain. I think the custodian got it out, however. My classmate Jeannie and I used to walk around the area at lunchtime and I made her laugh so hard she piddled. One of our art assignments was to buy a box of wooden matches, light them all off at home, then bring them in to glue down on cardboard in the shape of a cross. One time at lunch a group of us were playing hide 'n seek in the dark gym. I made it home first when Mark was "it" and he got so mad he cornered me and kicked me about 20 to 30 times. My knee bled through my white leotards, then I had to go to the doctor because it got infected. That knee still causes problems for me today. We used to go to the bookmobile at some school on Burrows. That was kinda cool. I should buy a bookmobile. We used to walk down the lane to church - I think every first Friday of the month. Early on, one time I was really hungry so I ate a graham wafer and Patricia went and told one of the Sisters and I didn't know I had done anything wrong, but then they wouldn't let me go to communion and I had to walk with then sit next to the Sister the whole time in church, like I was some kind of criminal. Our grade 5 class put on a surprise Valentine's Day party for our Sister. It was too bad when the Christmas concerts were cancelled. It was so nice to have St. Nicholas come in (instead of Santa) and give out those bags with the treats and Japanese oranges. The whole atmosphere of the concert was special. I still remember some of the words of those Ukrainian carols, even though I didn't learn much of the language.

Hi Old folks! My twin sister (Gige) and I went to IHM for 1st and 2nd grade. I remember I was picked to be an Angel at the Christmas play, I distintly remember hiding behind the curtain too. 2nd grade I opened my school bag and out walked a huge water bug, I ran screaming and so did Sr. Issabell? she was chasing me, I kept running. There was a girl in my class, and to this day I don't know why, but we would get mad at each other. Mistake, her sister was a safety, I would get sent to Mother Superiors room on the floor above, and when I got there every time, my cousin Richard Wright was standing in the corner, he was in 1st grade then. So funny. I remember a tiny lunch room and a table with mostly fruit (unwanted lunch items), I remember being hungry and got an apple once. Geeze, the things we remember. I just had to get back online after yesterday. I was so excited about finding this website I couldn't stop talking about it to my husband last night at dinner. I found this site in a most unusual way. I went online looking to find out when the Fireman's parade in Wildwood New Jersey was. Up popped info on parades in Chester, PA. and here I am. I thought of a few more classmates last night: Helen Johnson, Sally Drane, Caroline Kozokowski, John Hildrick and Bobby Cameron (Class of 59). Does anyone remember the large dog the nuns had. I think it was a Great Dane. I remember the movies we would watch in the auditorium, especially the King and I. And that tiny basement lunchroom with the little bottles of milk. Walking to school every day and passing that great hoagie shop LaSpadas. We have one in Ft. Lauderdale and they advertise that they are originally from Chester, PA. Down here they add vinegar to their hoagies, not the greatest...tastes like a salad. Hope more of our classmates find this website and we can rekindle old friendships.

My brother Bob an I both attended IHM in the 50s and went on to St. James and Notre Dame. My thanks to Bob McLauglin for the great memories and the names of friends I remember so fondly. I've always been wondering how I could get in touch with Ernestine Burke, we were very close in school. So sorry to hear about Danny and Michael's passing. Danny was always good for a laugh and a great time. I know that attending IHM helped to make me the person I am today and I enjoyed every minute there. Hello To all who attended I.H.M. and have posted to this site. I attended I.H.M. from 1955-1963. St.James from 1963-1967. B.McLaughlin, I very much enjoyed your stroll down memory lane in describing some of the happenings at 2nd and Norris Sts. There are quite a few names that you mentioned that bring back fond memories. Of course I'm a little younger than the people in the group mentioned but I remember the names and a little of the people. Not all of the former memebers of I.H.M. have escaped casualties of life but to those of us who remain, we will individually remember the atmospheres of I.H.M. and the surrounding area that also played a part in learning and living the pride of one of Chester's finest schools. Today, througout the city there are many a historical markers commemerating outstanding accomplishments of the city as well and visitors who also left a mark on "What Chester Makes, Makes Chester". From the industrial boom that once inhabited the city to the waterways that supported the commercial and travel necessities to 'Judging someone by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin', I.H. M. and its graduates have played a significant role in helping to shape the society in which we now live. Gotta go now so hello to all I.H.M. graduates and Bob---see you in passing in Phila..

Bob, I read with great pleasure your posting. I did not attend IHM, but I did attend a summer program there, in the late 60's I believe. It was called Operation Discovery I believe. It was open to all races, and I was one of the few white kids there. The program covered music, public speaking and other subjects, and while my memories are hazy, I vividly remember the atmosphere. It was a great summer, and I look back on it with fondness. I learned much that summer, but I mostly learned that together we can do anything, as long as we look beyond our skin, and into our hearts.

Greetings to my fellow alumni and alumnae (this is for the benefit of any former latin teachers, if any are still living or teaching latin). I graduated from IHM in '59 with a small class of approximately 23 students, maybe 10 boys and 13 girls? There was Al Anthony, Joe Traub, Danny Halloran, Mike Clark, ((Danny and Mike now deceased), Harry Lewis, Robert Dwight Williams, etc. and Ernestine Burke, Marie Flynn, Marie Speed, Mary Jane Keinzle, Bonita Wooten, Melva Miah, etc to name a few. I remember the large, tall White Funeral clock at 3rd and Norris. The Blue Line trucks across the street, Mary Street, the Diamond Ice company, the bright, colorful ceiling in our renovated church,(1957?) the small school, the smaller auditorium (learning to shoot only line drive jump shots because there was no room for an arc shot), and even the smallest lunch room in the basement. I fondly recall the seemingly large beautiful convent. When I look back at IHM, I remember people who cared about faith, teaching, and certainly instilling discipline (the hard way sometimes). But what I gathered most from my years at IHM, the good IHM sisters, and my parents was the unexpected blessing to be truly educated in an openly integrated environment where boys and girls from both races and different social backgrounds were placed together to learn the truth: that we were all the same. White and black, caucasian and african american, colored, etc (whatever term presently in use) becoming friends, competing in sports and games, and academics. Learning that all are equal and some more skilled than others, but the true measure was not color of social standing. It was performance. So I knew early that performance was also based on an opportunity to be prepared for your best performance. God bless IHM and its spirit of those who made it so. I am interested in a reunion of former students. please respond with your name and class. Let's see what develops. Finally, many thanks to John and his good work for this page and for this city.
