TPN "54: Tom---You're absolutely right. When you turn 70, you forget how old you are. Thanks for reminding me we're all 39! And next year, we'll be 38. I still recall sitting in Smedley Jr. High "assembly" in 1949 before the Christmas holidays hearing "JO-Jo" with the "spot" reflecting off his shiny head telling us all that the second half of the century was upon us and we were the leaders who would would determine the nation's destiny. How well have we done??? (Happy old years) and Happy New Year.

You and Jack Benny Tom? Have your kids passed you in age yet. .........Happy New Year everyone....... To those of you who are ill, may God hear the prayers being said in your name and Bless you with better health in the New Year.....Betty M. have a safe trip back to see your Mother....Iris, Merry Little Christmas to you and J. I still keep what we know as Ukrainian Christmas alive with a cup of Kapusta soup and passing a slice of garlic to one another in memory of Mom and Dad and the traditions they have given us....Had the big Christmas Eve dinner on the 24th, no sooner did I boil a pierogi they would disappear. Homemaders go fast in my house . .....Stan what a generous kindness you gave the children..... Keep well, keep that heart healthy....again Happy, Healthy New Year to all.

I hadn't realized that Iris. I knew she was injured in the collapse and was critical for weeks after, but did not realize to what degree. Joan did tell me that you and Jul were both injured in the mishap also. Jul seriously. Not to say your injury was minor but Jul was hospitalized for several weeks. I hope you both have healed from the physical results of the unexpected and horrifying accident that was an end to what should have been a wonderful event for your family.

Stan..do yea think some ninnos from that little creek that dumped into the Delaware River at about Clayton Street could win it for you. You know where kids would go down and swim close to the Hobo jungle and the little beach. Trying to think, did that stream of water pass thru the dump too. Oh what fun the kids had there finding treasures (trash?). and the disposal plant. did some of the old people use that crap for their gardens. I always wondered if I remember that being true.

Iris: A quick note to let you know that you and your family are in our prayers. Joan has been tied up for a few days as Uncle Joe had a stroke on Wednesday and she has tried to be there for Aunt Helen. ..................... Stan, the hands are working better. Didn't get the surgery will wait until they stop working again. Am starting to walk a little better although the pain is persistent. This gout is no fun. Always knew Dad had it, my brother had it but I have it major big time. I always thought it was a man's thing. Thanks for asking How did Big Yottie (Andy) make out. Enjoyed the read about you in Gebharts column afew weeks ago and more recently about Andy. Sad things do happen to nice people.......................... Betty, I am so very sorry to hear about Anne. I had wondered if Marty made it to California on his bike to see her and was praying for his safe return home and a gentle trip for Anne on her way home to God. How did your mother make out with the cough. It is difficult when you are so far away and time seems to be getting so much shorter. My thoughts and prayers with you and your family also................................... Thanks to John Bullock for sending a note to me ..as I am not on the computer anymore. My girl got the message to me and adds this note for me. Love to all, Caroline

Pete, I meant BOURBON drinkers. Here is what the Editor of a local newspaper wrote: FRONT PAGE OPINION Congratulations to 'Stanman' It is nice when good things happen to good people. Falling squarely into that category is Stan Jarusinski’s winning the Southern Kingfish Association National Championship. Jarusinski, or “Captain Stanman” as he is known, has worked tirelessly for sport fishermen and boating enthusiasts in our community for years – when he wasn’t raising championship beagles. As a principal in the Onslow Bay Salt Water Fishing Club, Stan has devoted his time and energies to everything from organizing the Onslow Bay Open King Mackerel Tournament to scouring the halls of Congress in order to come up with funds to dredge Bogue Inlet. His fishing prowess was the subject of a feature in Saltwater Sportsman, an international fishing magazine. Fishing expert, canine expert, charter boat captain, boating access advocate and Tideland News fishing correspondent, Jarusinski, a resident of Stella, really can do it all. But what he has done recently trumps all the rest. He and the crew of “Mister Stanman,” his charter boat, took top honors in the SKA’s Class of 2005 23-Foot and Under National Championship Tournament. The tournament was supposed to have taken place during November out of Biloxi , Miss. , but was delayed due to damage from Hurricane Katrina. Fishing out Fort Pierce, Fla., over the weekend of April 22, the “Mister Stanman,” a 23-foot Regulator, brought a couple of smokers to the dock. The crew weighed in a 42.27-pound king the first day and blew away the competition with the second-day king, a 39.91-pounder. Had the crew competed in the “open” category, the catch would have been good enough for “Mister Stanman” to finish third. Based on the total weight of the two fish, he and the crew, Kevin Hill of LaGrange, Greg Ogle of Pittsboro and Charles McClure of Ocean Beach, took home a 23-foot Palmetto powered by a pair of Mercury outboards. Perhaps more importantly, they claim the title National Champion. It is Jarusinski’s second such title, having claimed the U.S. Angler Championship in 2002 with a 46-pounder. Our congratulations to Jarusinski and the crew of “Mister Stanman.”

Hi Caroline, I logged on this morning for the first time in ages and saw a message from you concerning my EMail address and Mom's and Anne,s health. I am sorry to say, and it breaks my heart but Marty's sister Anne died the last of October, 2005. She hung on to enjoy a fabulous Marth family reunion at the beach, did all the planning herself and when she returned home to California she was ready to go to her Heavenly Father who, I am sure, welcomed her home with open arms. She was one of the most beautiful persons I have ever known and felt blessed to not only call her a sister-in-law but a friend. My Mother keeps plugging along. She has a very bad heart so I treasure each day I have left with her. She has developed a terrible cough and we go to the doctor tomorrow. I am scheduled to go back home on June 6th but will wait to see what the doctor has to say. The cruise was awesome. Seeing Joan again and sharing memories with her as well as everyone else in our group is something I will remember always. I hope you are well. My love to your family. Betty

Hope your cruise went well and that you had smooth seas and plenty to drink and eat. Thanks Iris. Dont know how us "poor" KIDS made it, swimming in the Delaware River at the pipe line, playing in hazardous chemical box cars, drinking that dirty water, etc. Guess we were toughened by our upbringing that allowed us to face the difficult challenges later in life. Seems like we all did well. Rosemary, yes I dated Mary Lou, she lived in Highland Gardens with all the other "rich" people. Funny you should mention her. Was thinking about her 2 weeks ago when I heard Ricky Nelson singing "Well hello Mary Lou" I'm sorry to hear that she passed on. There was another girl that I dated from Highland Gardens that hung around with Mary Lou. I can picture her, but can't recall her name.

Costa Del Mar sunglasses said they would also do something. Saltwater Sportsman who delayed our article for 1 1/2 years now is going to put the article in and instructed the Writer to do the story on both of our National Championships. The SKA has 2 pages in SWS every month. Also won a National, smaller organization in 2002. Thanks to all. Nick I'm sure you will have more to talk about than me. Im still in shock over what we did this past weekend. The Mr. Stanman fishing team won the Southern Kingfish Assn. National Championship in Ft. Pierce, Fla. The organization has over 10,000 members who compete in Division tournaments to qualify for the Nationals that are held annually in Biloxi, Miss. and Ft. Pierce, Fla. Only the best in each division qualify. The Team is based out of Swansboro, N. C., it is their 5th attempt at winning this championship, over 500 boats competed. 1st prize was an $80,000 boat and other cash awards. The SKA National Champs. will be shown on OLN, not exactly sure when, maybe in September. Will let you know when I find out.

Caroline....If I went past 3rd & Highland once, I went past a hundred times, but if my life depended on it I could not tell you what was there. The only thing that sticks in my mind were railroad tracks and a small store with one gas pump. This was right before the ferry entrance. Our cruise....If I gain just 7lbs I'll be happy. With my luck I'll gain the 7lbs just looking at the food and another 10lbs eating it!! Oh well....Thanks for the kind words regarding our class. One thing for sure; Cruising will not be the same when the class of 54 sets sail.

Tom: Do you remember anything about the stores at 3rd and Flower? If you do, could you email me so I can send you a photo. Perhaps you'll remember the building. your cruise: great idea Tom about getting online to get the information on before hand, maybe those that have computers could invite those that do not to do so if they would like. Its just about 1 month away. Time to break those shoes and legs in for walking. One block up and back to start, then after afew days another block and by the time the 30 plus days are up you'll be able to enjoy the walking tours with ease. Take your handywipes with you, and maybe your own pillow and thin blanket. A bottle of water and enjoy the rest. Oh, if your weight watching, lose that extra 5 lbs cause they guarantee you will gain at least 7 lbs with the terrific food they serve. So those that can't make it won't, just remember this committee of yours continually tries to get events going to keep your youth returning. Plan on the next one..make it the best ever. Wishing you all a safe, fun filled, memory collecting journey. Happy Easter and Passover Caroline caroline_oldchesterpa@yahoo.com

Correct spelling of my nickname was "Jary" pronounced Yachtie. Sorry I cant join y'all on the CRUISE. Bad time of the year, fishing tournaments, etc. Hope you have a great time, cruising is easy to get used to. Wish I could be joining you. My Sister Mickey is planning another cruise to Alaska, the first one was outstanding about 4 years ago. Will let you know when she has a date picked. Just got back from a cruise to St. Thomas, Haiti, Puerto Rico, et. Great weather 85 every day. Want to hear the songs we danced to, click on http://www.bobforrest.com/JukeBox.htm Good health to all. May the Cruisers have fair winds and following seas. "We can't change the winds, however, we can adjust our sails."

Pete, thanks for the correction. Being Welsh, as my mother was born in Wales, and living at 4th and Highland, I have an excuse for not spelling Stan's correctly. So thanks again for the information. This summer, when you drink your martinis make a dry Southern Comfort up with a twist and think of me. Sorry you are not going on the cruise. Keep in touch.

Hi Margie, So glad to see that someone is finally using this website. Also glad to hear that you a good time at the 50th. The committee tried their best to make it a memorable one. Hopefully, we will meet againin 2009. I gave the class of 1955 information on our band, The Legends. A few weeks before their reunion they learned that the group had disbanded. Evidently the leader had died. What a shame because we thought they were great. Hopefully our "dinner" in 2009 will have a good turn out. Pass the word. The committe will probably meet sometime in 2006 to start discussing the "dinner". Who knows we may have some surprises in store. It ain't over till the fat lady sings and I am not ready to do that yet. What is going on with your life?

Feel free to e-mail me if you'd like. Dad worked for General Chemical which became Allied Chemical then Allied Signal and finally Honeywell by the time he retired! I agree, he was very smart. The "kids" are all grown up. I'm the oldest at age 42. The last I saw the Schneiders was at my dad's funeral. I almost stopped by their hoagie shop when my Uncle Joe passed away but I was running late to get home to my kids. If you see them, wish them well for me. Best, Debbie

Some sad, but good news: Joan Miller Penny and Don were wiped out by Katrina. They got out before the storm and are living with their son. Katrina was not kind to them. I was told that they lost their home, two rental properties, two cars and a boat. Our prayers go with them. What a time in life to face such a tragedy--a life time of efforts gone. Summer is coming to a lovely ending (at least here in Delco) most of us are heading home from vacation to finally rest up..who ever said vacations are relaxing. Aaaahhh, put that pot of coffee on, kick off those shoes and just plop down on our favorite chair and think of that wonderful feeling of sleeping in your own bed, and, laugh as you may, you own bathroom. Familiar places make memories :) Nothing like relaxing on your own toilet.

What is especially nice is the end of summer sales that are happening in our favorite stores. Spear Brothers and Rodgers not having any I'm sorry to say, but others are. Nows the time to get afew really nice outfits for the CRUISE that the class of 54 has planned. Even saw some really great buys in sandles and walking shoes. Men & Woman. buy them now, get them broken in, save on those ugly, sore blisters ....and sun tan lotion. Nows the time to get it packed away in your utility bag. Lip balms are great to have on hand, thats something we often forget to pack. Don't want that flower called the Tu Lips to dry out. isn't kissing the national pass time, and we are the young at heart.

Are your passports up to date if you already have them. If not, plan on getting them early. You can think about these things now that your home and relaxing :) Don't wait until Christmas to get these things out of the way. Cause after Christmas comes New Years, then Valentines Day and Easter.

If it seems months away, not so, look how fast summer went. It was only Memorial day yesterday, was it not. Before you know it you will be stepping on that bus to Philly and your grand vacation.

So relax, updates will be forth coming for Iris and Wanda regarding your trip, or you can emil them with your questions.

Ain't it great, no place like home, planning your vacation. Bet you can't wait..

While many of you are sitting on the sand and I am sure thanking God for the water, why not give some thought to the Class Cruise that is planned. Don't let the time pass you by, if you have any questions regarding anything about the trip, contact Iris or Wanda or posted it here. its not often that friends can get together on a well planned vacation, one totally void of stress. One where you can sit in a lounge for an entire day if you want to. .

I'm told 4 of the prettiest flag twirlers ever to grace the CHS football field are going. Now thats only a rumor...but you know how people love rumors.

I think that came from my Mom. She always served coffee or tea with a cup and saucer, never mugs and made sure everyone always felt welcomed in her home.

Thats whats nice about these school pages, you can have a coffee Klatch yet be miles apart. Thinking about that, haven't seem Betty M. lately. So if your out there Betty, how are yea...anything new happening..I keep getting requests for a cookbook from Oldchesterpa. People ask that Mrs. Phillips Chocolate Fudge recipe be in the dedication.

Caroline,

You are remembering Angelo Mattera. He was in the service and I believe he was killed in an auto accident soon after graduation from high school. He was really a nice gentleman kind of kid. We will always remember him in our hearts as a young 18 year old. Yes, Joan G. or Joan Guzek has a heart too big for her body. She does many things, as you mentioned, without any one aware of what she has done. Thanks for the kind words about the cruise. We would like input form others. As far as finances, we have set it up with the travel agent to be able to send a little each month until you meet the final cost. We realized many may not be able to afford to go, so that is why we gave ample notice of the date and decided to go in 2006 instead of 2005. That is another reason why we could not quote a price earlier. Thanks again, Love ya!

August 5th is just around the corner for deposits. I am sure Iris would appreciate feed back regarding those still sitting at the edge of the water trying to decide if it is a yes or no for sailing. Let her know your thoughts. Let her know if your plans will include this cruise. Whether you have a positive or negative opinion of the cruise, this is where you can add your thoughts.

Many of us are on fixed incomes and just can't squeeze a trip out at this time. Many of us live in other states so it would mean added expense to fly to Philly then the trip and back home. Many of us are not well and hate to plan that far in advance. These are things that can be discussed.

Sometimes committee people try to keep memories alive by planning events, give them your input here, No one will be upset if you tell them you don't agree with the planned event. These are things they want to know. Tell them what you would like to plan if anything.

Iris, I won't be going on the cruise, 'cause I get seasick on a waterbed. I'd be hanging over the side of the ship all day. (hummmm, maybe I'd lose some weight if I did)..

I went on only one cruise, they had a Halloween dress up type evening. way back in the early 60's. I went as a potted palm. I won some type of award. I think a bottle. Then at the captains dinner go deathly ill from the toast. I had a drink of some sort and as a non drinker it sure did effect me. Between being seasick and high on the wine...ughhhhh. the porter gave me a ice bucket to carry around that evening. I guess he really got tired of carrying that big mop and water bucket around after me.

. Earlier I mentioned that Memorial Day has passed but in remembering I thought of a young man who is buried at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cemetery in the Soldiers Circle. I believe he was a member of your class. I only remember him as.. Angelo ... I remember him along with my Dad because Joan G. has never forgotten him, she would visit his grave each Memorial Day she was in town, during the Services held there.. So all these years later, through what war I am not sure, this young man who was a friend of Joan's is remembered...gone much to soon, much to young. It must have touched your young hearts to hear of of his Sacrifice. It did your classmates, she still remembers.

See how easy it is. Come on Wake up some memories, ...and I'm not even a classmate or a CHS graduate. I happen to know there are many more mates visiting than post...

All you class of 1954 people. We would like to hear from you in regard to the cruise. How about some comments on this page?

The Class of '54 is a unique class, perhaps more so than most to me, you see, I have had the pleasure of knowing so many of you.

The emails I received when I returned home tonight were many. This tells me that, there are people that visit but do not post.

Are you aware that your class contributed to have this a continuing page for members to keep connected. This was a generous decision on the part of Wanda, Iris and the other committee people. They wanted a page that would keep interest in the wonderful memories you all have, they wanted a place for them to be documented. This is the place. A place for general news, happy or sad to be posted. Memory awakening thoughts to be shared. They are treasures.

Just don't read the posts of others, add your news here. Did you become a new grandma or grandpa. Did you go on an interesting vacation. Did you retire, than decide to go back to work, 'cause your were bored with so much of nothing to do. Share the good things of life ..as well as sad ones.

Classmate, don't leave the site, we all have moments where we wish we could take back words. But words are what are important. Words help us to grow. Each experience helps us to grow. If you have information and don't want to post yourself, send it to your committee people, Iris has her email on board, Wanda has hers on board also.

I have enjoyed Stans memories and adventures in life. I hope he continues to add them. Hope you did not suffer much damage to your boat during the storm recently. How did you fare yesterday. The streets in Cape May were flooded, so I assume you had some pretty big puddles in NC too.

Now for afew memories of my own to stir the pot:

I have a memory of one of your class members, on prom night she wore this beautiful gown, she had a cute cupie doll <Sp> in one arm and the corsage in the other. Always wanted to ask, was the doll a corsage too? In my minds eye, it sorta looked like a precious moments doll. Gosh were they around that long ago.

Then another memory hits me. Remember that little creature some of you had ...an invisible little man that did finger to finger talk and was even taken to the movies with you. What was his name. Pinky?

and i am sure some of you remember that little kid that wore cowboy boots to school each day. Sally Starr she was not. She was the little sister that wanted to go every where with your class.

Enjoy your site, it is really a pleasure to visit.

Dear Wanda:

I am sorry to have offended any member of this class or any other class or classmembers. It is and was not my intent.

I would not know of any internal reason not to add a article. ..and it would not be my business to know.

When an article appears naming members of any class and it is brought to my attention ...I for one add it to that school page. As a volunteer on this site, my only interest is keeping people informed about what has been written.

If my good intentions have caused any problem, I repeat I am sorry.

the goal here at this site is to share information about Chester people that others might enjoy reading.

About all this stuff about how wonderful Marcus Belgrave is???????? We tried to find him for our reunion....and a lot of time was spent on this job. Just as we do for all those who we have not been able to find.....We found him. But he did not even have the courtesy to send the form back....EVER....I feel that he does not care about us as his classmates so why is such a big deal being made about him. I would rather see those who give a darn.

Stan: I would like to keep my ID private, am not running from the law :) just like my privacy and I have found that that is impossible if but one person knows who you are and has your email address. Although as a kid I remember you could be trusted. That was a fine quality of character and it seems your character has taken giant steps over the years.

Keeping the tradition is really good for the kids and grandkids if one has them around. Did the rye bread taste like it use to? I know for years we bought ours from the Jewish section of Philadelphia when we lived in the area, but the original owners of the bakery sold and the new ones just can't seem to get it right. We also try to keep the tradition. We still set the table in the sign of the Passion and have our food blessed. (Even if its just the two of us) Years ago the Priest came to the house. Now we take it to a church about 20 miles away to have the Food Blessed. Did you have Babka? We had fresh kielbasa rather than smoked and I have to say, it was almost as tasty as I remember from Prices. Went back to getting the shank of a ham this year and it was not as dry and less salty and filled with flavor. One slice and thats it for me, like you I have heart problems and at present the BP is way out of control.

Remember your neighbor Marie. was that dark hair lady who was sorta robust her grandmother? I was so freightened of her that I rode my bike on the other side of the street then crossed over to yours.

Have you been down that way lately. A friend sent me photos since they tore down along the entire strip. Your house looks like it is still there. One day I have to get down that way and take a look.

Weso³ego Alleluja! Keep healty.

HAPPY EASTER.

Easter morning brings back a lot of memories at St. Hedwigs Church walking around outside the Church at 6 AM with our Communion Suits on, short pants, and freezing. Then home for the kielbasa that the Priest blessed on Saturday.

Bring back any memories?

People we met down here are from Buffalo, NY and just made a trip up there to bring back loaves of rye bread and home made kielbasa. That will be our Easter Dinner this year as we try and keep the tradition alive. Its been in the 70s down here and the fishing has been great. Have a wonderful day. Old Neighbor, please email me.

Update on the 3/3/05 Town Hall Meeting. The Fire Marshall closed the doors of the Civic Center when the crowd reached 718, 218 over capacity. 28 Speakers came to the podium.

On 3/8/05, 5 days after our Town Hall Meeting, we received $1,000,000 in Emergency Funds to keep our inlets open for 2005. Bogue Inlet, our Inlet received $300,000 for 2 dredgings.

We are now campaigning to get funding for Fiscal 2006 from the House and Senate Appropriations Comm. for Energy and Water. The Appr. Comm. will close the budget in November 2005.

If you are wondering, no, we would not have received funding had we not had the meeting.

We were the lead story on all 4 TV networks with 2 networks doing live feeds starting at 5 PM. A live radio talk show started at 5 and ended at 7 PM. One TV station had me do a 5 minute spot every hour for 24 hours in order to get the message out.

They thought our fishing club was a couple of rednecks sitting around drinking beer and talking about fishing. Did they ever get fooled.

Stan: Really interesting reading. The fact that the force of public opinion came to the meeting is impressive. That is vital in keeping the flow of interest when trying to get something accomplished for the better of the whole not just the few.

The waterways of our nation play a major factor in its economy. Many small seafaring communities supply the world with good healthy food not just the large commercial fishermen. The pleasure seekers enjoy the relaxed feeling they get from business such as yours while keeping the economy flowing for the better. Good luck in this challenging project. This is a matter of interest and awareness for all areas that depend on a living from its waters. Glad you posted it.

Lucky for that neighborhood that a nice kid from Chester moved down there. Maybe you and your peers should have stayed in Chester. Can you imagine what Chester would have been like today if the great exodus did not happen in the 50's.

Keep healthy Stan. Glad to see your note..Have a Happy Easter if we do not meet like this again before then. :)

The Onslow Bay Saltwater Fishing Club had to delay its regular monthly meeting start time by an hour March 3 at the Swansboro Civic Center. That's because it hosted a “Save Our Inlets Town Meeting” so important it backed up traffic more than a mile along N.C. 24.

At stake was the lifeblood of several coastal communities, if not the entire state’s coastline. However, participants stressed that the issue isn’t local but will have an economic and safety impact felt to the upper peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

“There’s never been as much legislative power under on roof at the same time,” said Onslow Bay Saltwater Fishing Club President Stan Jarusinski, “We want to hear about problems and solutions, and we have to do something before May. But we need both short-term and long-term solutions.”

The problem is there is no federal or state money for dredging beyond this year for so-called “shallow-draft” inlets, including Bogue, New River, Carolina Beach, Topsail and Lockwood Folly inlets. More than two-dozen citizens addressed the panel of county commissioners, state representatives and representatives from the offices the state’s U.S. congressional delegation.

“In eastern North Carolina, two things drive our economy, tourism and the military,” said Scott Chadwick of the Swansboro Chamber of Commerce. “Our Swansboro Rotary Club King mackerel Tournament alone generates over $1 million to our economy every year. We need to know how many boats get stuck in the shoaled inlets. This is how you get things done.”

Allan Libby of Topsail Chamber of Commerce said resolutions had been passed by Carolina Beach, North Topsail Beach, Surf City, Jacksonville, Burgaw and many fishing clubs to support dredge funding. He also said N.C. House Resolution 494 was introduced March 4 by Reps. Justice, Stiller, McComas, and Wright urging Congress to appropriate funding to the Corps of Engineers for dredging the inlets.

“We need $234,000 for New River Inlet this year or it will be shoaled by tourist season,” he said. “We need $187,000 for New Topsail or it will be shoaled by July. We need these funds immediately. Then we need to solve the problem of long-term funding. When I woke up one morning and they pulled the buoys from New River Inlet, I thought, ‘Holy cow. What am I going to do now?’ ”

“I have had two boats going out of Bogue Inlet since 1969,” said Capt Lee Manning of Nancy Lee Charters. “There are over 4,000 boats going out of the inlet in a single summer. It’s my sole source of income. Our business is responsible for over $1 million in tourism when you consider things like motel rooms and food. I don’t even know if we can get out now. There’s only 5 feet of water.”

Shallow-draft inlets are dredged to a maximum depth of 8 feet. But when they fill so channel markers can't be maintained, the U.S. Coast Guard pulls the buoys. It has already happened at New River and Lockwood Folly inlets.

Bobby McConville, a Carolina Beach florist, fishes for fun at Carolina Beach Inlet.

“At our end of the beach, our growth has been very strong,” he said. “At every turn, there’s another increase in tax. People work hard. Government asks us to work, give, and pay more taxes. But we can’t afford to keep our inlets, our fishing — our access to the ocean. People have lake access, golf access. I think we’ve already paid for keeping Carolina Beach Inlet open with every sort of taxes.”

“The state is looking at buying a dredge that will probably be under the ferry program,” said Onslow County Sen. Harry Brown. "But it’s hard to convince anybody in Raleigh to spend money east if I-95.”

“Every year, there’s less money for waterways,” said Janet Bradbury, a representative of U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole’s office. “Sen. Dole has received a lot of emails and letters. But you are preaching to the choir. At the same time, it is important to make contact with senators and congressmen from outside coastal areas who are impacted. It will help your N.C. representatives serve you better.”

Government officials on the town meeting panel included Harry Brown, N.C. Sen. Onslow; Linda Clay, Carteret County Commissioner; Joe McLaughlin, Onslow County Commissioner; George Cleveland; N.C. Rep. Onslow; Russell Tucker, N.C. Rep. Onslow; Jean Preston, N.C. Rep. Onslow; Lionel Midgett, Chairman, Onslow County Commissioner; Martin Aragona, Onslow County Commissioner; Paul Buchanan, Onslow County Commissioner; Delma Collins, Onslow County Commissioner; Pat McElraft, Carteret County Commissioner; Ryan Rankin, Office of U.S. Senator Richard Burr; Janet Bradbury, Office of U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole; Josh Bowlen, Office of U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones; Mary Ellen Stevens Simpson, Office of N.C. Rep. Danny McComas; Tamara Jones, Policy Director, Office of Lt. Governor Beverly Purdue.

Iris H: I enjoyed reading your Christmas reflection. I remember your fathers displays and can remember watching Eugene make Christmas trees from pine cones of all sizes. I think he straightened out a paper clip and inserted it in the bottom of the cone, then bent the rest of the clip back to form a tree stand. Then snow was put on some of the tips. I think I remember brick crape paper around the bottom of the platform as a skirt and all kinds of wires running under there.

Giving your ornaments to your family while you can enjoy the pleasure of watching them receive it is a custom we should all borrow.

Came to your rescue??????? You got me there. Guess that was my clue to learn who you are, well I'm still stumped.

Yes, I remember when Smokey was laid out. Their garage backed up to our yard. There were people in the house and out in the garage, a great showing for a guy that was in my young eyes, a HERO.

It was Captain Easy that lived at 2nd and Trainer. Cant remember his real name but he was Polish. I can remember the family, think there last name started with an M.

Lets save the space on this site and email me so we can reminisce. seajay@ec.rr.com

Its really good to hear that you are feeling good. You like so many of the "Old" South Chesterites have that good old fashion stock that won't allow you to give up. Na zdrowie!

Your mention is in 2nd paragraph here

Visiting other pages on this website. adding the link scroll down to Sloppy Joes pictures. http://oldchesterpa.com/business_restaurants_sandwich.htm

Did go to your website before it went down. You don't look 68 years old. I think you look as good now as that gallant young boy that came to my rescue when I was about 8 years old. Always thought you'd end up being a medic or something in that line. But you have done better, helping children. Thats proud.

That was the Alcott child that was murdered. Remember, many were not allowed to go around the Carnies after that with out older siblings. Took years to catch up with the killer.

Remember when Smokey was brought home and layed out? I thought the entire world was standing in line at his house for the viewing. What was his cousins name that was killed also? I think maybe a Bunk..I think they were cousins.

Often wondered if you got into the Scopes movies for free.

Thanks for the heads up on the Gebhardt article. If one of you could send it to me, I would appreciate it, PO Box 1978, Swansboro, NC 28584.

Old Neighbor, wish I knew your real name, doing fine after the triple. About 95% now.

Just got back from a 12 day cruise in the Western Carribean, Aruba, Cost Rica, Panama Canal and one of my favorite places, Georgetown in the Caymans. Just love the clarity of the water there and in Curacao.

Salt Water Sportsman was here in October and did another "How to" article that will appear in their February 2005 issue.

Let me bring back some memories:

The first hogie shop, that I remember, at corner of 3rd and Highland, Darrs and Bomberger Drug Stores, the dances at the Catholic Church in Clifton Heights, Shoosters, drag racing on 322 while it was being built and after it was built, Honeysuckle Farm for ice cream.

The Carnivals in Trainer-remember the year the Alcott girl (think thats the name) was murdered? Several of us were at the Carnival that night.

My website is back up, www.captainstanman.us and will have 2 million visitors this year, and its all free. You have to join the Saltwater Forum to really see where the action is. A visit to The Library is recommended when you get on the Forum.

Debbie L. Hoffman: Your Dad was an unpretentious, decent fella' with a sense of humor and a kindly spirit. I had several classes at CHS with him. Last time I saw him was at Jean O'Connor's 50th birthday get-together somewhere in Broohaven (about 1986). He was his friendly, affable self. We were talking about "getting older" and physical limitations/health problems and I recall his saying what great shape his wife was in (your mother--he talked glowingly of her) and how he should take better care of himself. God bless him.

But, his legacy lives on through my sisters and his six grandchildren. I actually had planned on bringing my mother to the Class of 1954 reunion but it was just too much for my mother. I would love for folks to regale me with stories about my dad during his younger days! I love looking at the Chester website. I was born there and often still go back to visit what's left of my family there. Unfortunately, much of those visits the past few years have included funerals. I still remember visiting my grandmother on Hayes Street and walking to the corner market. Or going to Easter or Christmas services at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Anyway, as I said, no apologies necessary. I'm just happy to know that folks remember my father fondly. Best, Debbie

Hello Debbie:

I am a volunteer on this site. At the Oldchester reunion many people brought wonderful treasures with many memories for us to scan and add to oldchesterpa. Unfortunately some have no identification and we try our best in getting them. Thats why it is on this CHS page.

One of the older people (I'm 64 so older than me) thought the young man in dress pants and sport jacket walking in the street (as your looking at the photo on the computer on the left) looked somewhat like your Dad. I showed the picture to several others hoping to get a correct ID and at least one other thought that it could be. Those that remembered your Dad, remembered him as a handsome young man, with a wonderful personality. Always willing to help anyone and very polite.

I am sorry if you were saddened by this question. Had it been your father, and I assume it is not as you would have been able to see him immediately, you would have appreciated seeing such a wonderful step back into such a happy time.

Again I am sorry if I brought saddness to your heart, you are Blessed to have the memories your Dad gave you. That is a gift.

Boy Stan you opened a lot of memory there with the candy store. Just remembering Mrs. Jadyk working in her garden in the back yard and the one across the street on booth. With her Bacha' type dress, her stockings rolled down to her ankles and the typical apron our grandmoms wore in those days. And her white head scarf with the big roses on it. Old Mr. Jadyk would have to tend the store when she worked outside or Mikey would come in from their house in the back of the store when it got to crowded with kids. Remember Mr. J. would get so engrossed in watching the checker games, Mike had to come in allot. And before most of the "gang" hung out there, our parents grew up and hung there too.

The Southern Kingfish Association (SKA) the largest saltwater tournament trail in the world, held their 2004 National Championships and Awards in Biloxi, Ms. on 11/18/ thru 11/21/04.

The SKA recognized Captain Stan Jarusinski of Swansboro, NC known as “Captain Stanman” with their Annual Sportsmanship Award. Stan’s website, www.captainstanman.us is known as the “unofficial message board of the SKA.”

Jack Holmes, President of the 10,000 member organization presented the award at the Captains Meeting, attended by over 1,000 qualified participants.

President Holmes cited some of Stan’s contributions to the sport: an “how to” article on king mackerel fishing in the 2/04 issue of the the international Saltwater Sportsman magazine, his writings in weekly and monthly publications and for the Annual SKA Sanctioned King Mackerel Tournament he founded and directs.

In 4 years the volunteer Tournament raised over $56,000 for North Carolina Kids and $6500 to replenish the Onslow Bay Saltwater Fishing Club artificial reef. The reef replenishment project was also dedicated to him for his efforts on starting the Fishing Club in March of 2003 which now has over 500 members.

Hi Classmates, The date for the cruise is confirmed: May 20,2006. We will have final information, with costs, after the first of the year (2005). We do know that it will be approximately $1,200.00/person, double occupancy. We hope that we will be departing from Philadelphia. If not, it will be New York, with our being "bused" from a central location near Chester. The cost may increase or decrease. We can pay on the installment plan, if you so desire, however final payment must be made by March 1,2006. We will dock right in Hamilton and the cruise line is Celebrity. This cruise is open to anyone you choose to invite. Hope to see you as we cruise past our old stomping grounds (Chester) on the way to Bermuda. How about passports?

Wanda Eddy Fairman has been like a sister to me for Sixty two years. It is about time that she received recognition. All through High School she was the motivator behind several of us to become involved in various clubs, etc. Always the quiet one, asking for no recognition in return. She is always there when needed and one never has to ask! Hats off to my dear friend! She is certainly greatly over due for recognition from her community!

WANDA EDDY FAIRMAN CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Named Prospect Park *** FEMALE OF THE YEAR ***

Wanda has been a lifelong volunteer in Prospect Park. Each year The Boro names a man and woman to receive the honor. She is presently a volunteer at the public library. A well deserved honor finally recognized. You see Wanda has volunteered in one capacity or another for over 40 years.

Wanda Congratulations again. You are a person that never Blew their own horn and quietly did what you had to do for your community, family and I am sure your God. God keep you well.

Dan if ever a column should be written, it should be about Costa. Ed Gebhart where are yea! I'll sharpen your pencil since you don't key in on the computer. I think I mis typed the year below. It probably was 1956 after they were graduated from CHS and at Michigan State. I never went to CHS but knew Costa and his good friend Horace-- both were very nice young men and a credit to their families even as teens. As John would say, Let Light Perpetual Shine upon them.

Do you think Costa and Horace have started a team upstairs.. If you hear a lot of boom booms one night, it might be someone practicing.

Again, in September we will be discussing a cruise. No information will be forwarded except by word of mouth and on this website.

I heard your reunion committee did a bang up job. Now I see plans for a trip. Hey, you guys deserve to enjoy these years and thankfully have a group of dedicated classmates that are trying to make that happen.

Dear Iris: A suggestion which has helped other classes pass the message on is the FWD email. What was done in one instance for those that do not open fwds was to put in the subject box: Class of " " Newsletter. Then in the body invite all to fwd the note to anyone that they know with a email address from the class or the class members family members. This way all bases are covered and the word gets out. End with: you are invited and encouraged to keep in touch at: http://www.oldchesterpa.com/chs_54_reunion.htm

The first one could start with the list you have and put a teaser in about the trip to perk the interest in visiting the site. Then keep it moving form there.

Dear Pete:

When requesting addresses of folks you have not seen in many years or heard from, all parties must agree to the connection. All one can do is pass the message on to any address they might have and then hope for the best.

In my case I get not less then 10 requests a month asking if I know about one thing or another. I do try to answer requests from school children ASAP as many are regarding school projects, yet it takes several days to a week or two in many instances. Sometimes I do not get on the computer for weeks as I am busy with other projects. Often computer crash and one may be off line for months. Once your request is received, please allow time for someone to fwd. and receive the information. Don't forget these members of your class have been working their butts off to make a memorable 50th class reunion for many. It does not end with the night of the reunion, there is much that needs to be followed up after. Be patient I am sure that when time allows you will get an answer.

Please don't be offended by my two cents worth, I just thought it might help.

Peace and Blessings

Since Anonymous has asked for my opinion as 1 of the 129, for me the night was a pleasure from beginning to end. We should all be grateful to those who provided this opportunity for us to get together again in such a comfortable atmosphere. I'm sorry to say the evening did not result in a week's vacation for me. Since retirement, I'm no longer entitled to a vacation. Now I take "holidays". There were 204 people present, of which 129 were classmates. All comments to me were positive and that everyone had a good time. I could not believe that the dance floor was always occupied. The results of the voting for the future was that we will meet again in 5 years (April 25, 2009) for a dinner. The night ended with only classmates on the dance floor and overhead balloons were released and Mardi Gra type necklaces were thrown to the crowd. This was followed by the song "We'll meet again, don't know where don't know when..." and ended with the singing of the Alma Mater. Sounded pretty good for "YOUNG old timers". P.S., How about a name when you log on?

Class Reunion -- by Jim C. Carpenter - Copyright 1993 -- rcb404@bankrcb.net

I read an ad in the paper one day In the Dallas Morning News (note: oldchester newsstand) All about my class reunion in A town near Santa Cruz (note: Chester, PA)

I tried to decide if I should go To meet my friends and peers And see how classmates from the past Had aged in all these years

I finally resolved that I should go And see what I could see And meet my friends from the senior class Of nineteen fifty-three

I rented a tux and a black toupee Then brushed my shoes and hair I trimmed my mustache and my beard And changed my under wear

I emptied the bottle of after shave And rented a limousine I brushed my teeth with Ultra-Bright Then gargled some listerine

I soon arrived in splendid form With a flower on my chest Sporting a rented diamond ring And smelling my very best

Now I was dressed in the finest garb Like a monarch at a feast When I discovered that no one there Seemed familiar in the least

Well not a soul remembered me And my heart dropped to the floor When I remembered that I was in The class of fifty-four

The kid from Trainer St. will have an article in a National Fishing Magazine, Saltwater Sportsman. They spent 2 days with me researching the article and even took them fishing and caught a 22# King Mackerel to top off the article. Watch for the January 2004 edition of Saltwater Sportsman.

Visit my website, www.captainstanman.com This site is the most active fishing site on the East Coast getting 4000 to 5000 visitors. My goal is to teach how to catch fish. This information is in the Library. Also go to the Photos page for fishing photos, notable is the 50# which won the National Championships and was the heaviest fish caught in competition by a 23 Class boat in 2002.
