SAS was closed with allot of other schools. It was said the money to run the schools was no there. It was a time when consoldation was the thing. Also in that time that part of Chester as falling apart. enrolment was down. I left right befor the close it was sad!!! I know allot of people and kids were upset. I then went to Holy Ghost, only to leave after the first semester of tht prison! I then went to Chichester.

I attended St. Anthony's in Chester in the early 1950's and would have been in the 8th grade graduating class of 1960. The only picture I have of my days there are of me in my First Holy Communion dress in front of the church. We made our First Holy Communion in first grade. I don't remember any of my clasmates, only that my days there were happy ones and that the Sisters were so very kind to me. Only last week was I able to find out which order taught me and that was because I located this web site. If you were a member of the 8th grade graduation class of 1960, I would love to hear from you. Most likely, you won't remember me since I left after first grade to move to Delaware and then to NJ...and then back to Delaware. My grandfather was Carl Peterson and he was a Chester police officer and eventually head of the Vice Squad before he retired. Both of my parents were skaters. My mom was a professional and taught at Riverview Beach in NJ before she married my dad. After they married, she taught at his home rink in Chester...where I also began skating at the age of ten months. Anyway, if you were in my class, I would love to hear from you. Hi old folks! I would have grad from St. Anthony's in 1965, was there for 2nd and 3rd grade. LOVED the 2nd grade nun, she loved my drawings and would put them on the bulletin board. I do art work to this day. 3rd grade was alittle different, I don't remember the nun, but if one of us did something wrong, the entire asile would have to line up, go up front and lick the same bar of soap!! anyone remember that? I learned to lick it once so my tongue would be white, then pretend to lick more, did you all do that too? I had to wear a wad of gum on my nose all day too, hahaha. Pat Molla was in my class, my twin sister Gige, Lorraine Street would take me to her house for lunch sometimes on 9th st. The rest is a blurrrr. Went to OLP from 4th grade on then to Notre Dame. I'm excited to find this web site and perhaps contact old friends. I was a "lifer" at St. Anthony's. Going from kindergarten to 8th grade. Graduated in 1962 then onto Notre Dame and graduated in 1966. I started West Chester University but left to join my husband in Europe for a few years. I finished my college education when my second son went off to college. I graduated in 2000 and I enjoyed every minute of it. If there is a reunion of Notre Dame, I would be very interested in attending.

I remember so many warm memories from SAS. Learning to knit in 7th grade to keep our minds off the boys. Sister Mary Annette - boy she was tough but I have to say fair. Sister Mary Francine - so sweet giving us answers to exams and bubble gum which we weren't allowed to chew (until she turned around). Milk delivered to the classroom doors, cloak rooms, our two Italian students, Rosa and Vincenza, who came in 5th grade, poor Sister Mary Irene and the locked classroom (among many incidents), spelling bees, civics, the lunchroom and the tables that went into the walls, trips to Valley Forge and Lenape, Fr. D'Addezio and our plays we put on, I can go on and on. I would love to hear from anyone in my class. It would be nice to have a reunion and I would be happy to help with it. I saw a posting on this web site by a Vince Gaglio and wondered if it was the same Vince Gaglio I ran with for a few years when a I was growing up in Chester. The VO-5 reference was my attempt at a little light hearted humor to serve as a memory focal point we both shared during our teen years of primping our hair styles. I have fond memories of the Vince I knew and did not intend to hurt or embarrass. I lived in McCaffery Village off Highland Ave from 1950 till 1955 and graduated from Rez in 1956 and St. James in 1960. My parents bought a house in 1956 on Cater Lane just down the back road off Highland Ave and Vince lived several blocks further down the road and up the hill. I don't remember all the street names. We used to go the St. James dances together with our VO-5 slicked hair styles. I left Chester in 1963 at the age of 20 and have been in California since. Now that school is fast approaching, I can remember my first day of school at Saint Anthonys. It had the most sanitizing smell to it. Being in a room with a bunch of kids I never even knew,, some kids were crying, wanting their mommies, some kids got sick. I just remember thinking, "gee, school is great, why are they so upset, this place is going to be fun" I also remember the janitor used alot of sawdust the first few days for when the kids im my class got sick. It was like a land mine in the hallways. I remember the first time I saw my nun, she was nowhere near as scary as her habit made her seem to be. She had such a nice smell from the soap she used, whenever I smell it I think of her. She taught me the alphabet, how to read, write, and to behave, life skills. Having a nickel to buy a REAL pretzel, not the fake kind you get at a ballpark. To this day, I have alot of poigant memories of that day as well as the whole year.

Many, many memories come to mind while reading all the messages from past graduates of St. Anthony's school. They come quickly to my conscious mind, even though it has been years, 1957 to be exact. We laughed a lot at Sister Mary Daniels, the boys really had it tough. But most of all I remember how dedicated those nuns were. There were no subs at St. Anthony's. They show up every day rain or shine. I believe that I owe my excellent educational foundation to those nuns. They worked hard. Today's classrooms do not compare with attention and respect those nuns demanded and rightfully received. Thank your lucky stars if you were one of our graduates.

The Missionary Franciscan Sisters who used to teach at St. Anthony’s have just started putting together a quarterly newsletter about their community. Many Sisters who taught there are still alive, and have fond memories of their years in Chester.

As the Sisters in our community continue to age, we are trying to preserve their legacy for future generations by continuing to build an archive of historical materials related to their ministries. Over time, we will eventually feature all of our schools in the newsletter, and eventually on a website as well. We need help from our alumni to accomplish this project.

I'm glad I found this site. Graduated St. Anthonys in 1961. I was there for seventh and eighth grades. I have plenty of good memories from those 2 years. I remember Sister Mary Adelaide who helped me immensely in my transition from Lincoln school. You know the Catholics were always ahead of the publics. Sister Mary Irene was eighth grade and I'm still sorry for all the grief I caused that poor woman. The best memories were of my classmates and the parties we had. We need to have another reunion and I understand there are many of us still around. I have the Class Picture and the names of everyone in the class. I also have the last update of the class list from 1983 compiled by Linda Gorga. I still have my eighth grade report card with the RED C's for courage, cooperation and orderliness. But most of you couldn't beat my grades. OK out there, who is going to get us together again?

I went to Saint Anthony's in the second grade. At the time, my parents were in the process of getting divorced. During the course of the school year, I moved three times to three different towns. Because of my situation, there were a few times when I did not arrive at school on time, or had other problems associated with it. For an 7-8 year old kid to go through was quite alot to ask, so I would think. One thing that really stands out in my mind was on the last day of school I was called up to the front of the room and given a certificate for having perfect attendance. Every time I think about that gesture, I realized how kind and compassionate my teacher in the second grade was to me.
