I went to Smedley from 1979 to 1981. I was in 6-4, 7-3, and 8-3 and I have a lot of memories. I was in the band with Mr. Back where I played the drums and I'm still playing the drums. One of my favorite teachers were Ms. Carter. During my times at Smedley, teachers were permitted to paddle you when you were wrong and I remember a lot of paddles I received. Ms. Carter use to have her name engraved on her paddles. So when you did something wrong in her class, not only did you receive a paddle. But, she sprinkled dust from the chalk board on her paddle. So when she paddled us, we would walk around with her name and her room number on our behind. When I was at Smedley, I remember the Eagles losing to the Oakland Raiders in the Super Bowl. The Phillies won the World Series against the Royals. The United States Hockey team won a silver medal in the Olympics and we had a bad teachers strike. In 1981, we did not get out of school until June 30th because of the teachers strike. Finally, I miss Mr Sebashi. He tried to get me to play soccer, but at that time I thought it was not cool. Now that my son and daughther play soccer, I regret that I missed out playing this sport.

Just found this site! I stopped by Smedley about 10 years ago and got to explore the place at will. Great memories of playing football on the rocky field and basketball in the postage-size gym in the basement. Ms Etches and her paddle, the spotlight crew and the dances in the auditorium. Hello, everyone, from the Adirondack mountains. I have been enjoying the old Chester site. Graduated from Smedley in '72. Fond memories of Mr. Kirvin (Band), Mr. Curley (Chorus), Mr. Weaver (maintenance), the gym teachers, and memories of Mrs. Platukis, the French teacher. I remember walking past the teachers' room with cigarette smoke oozing out of the windows to "their" room which was located near the Band room. Always think and chuckle of that when the subject of smoking comes up in my Faculty lounge. Does anyone remember the candy store on Edgmont Ave (up near 21st St.)? We would often stop in there for penny candy on the way home from school...I believe the owner's name was Frank(?) I've shared info from the old Chester site with my father, John Mitchell, who ran the boys' dept at the Central YMCA. He lives up here now, but misses the area. Thanks, everyone, for reminiscing!

I fondly remember the days I spent at Smedley and the many friends from that era of my life. While at Smedley I broke and set a new pole vault record during the JHS Track and Field Meet at CHS and knowing the record was ten years old when I broke it I often wonder if my record was ever broken! I also sang in a quartet along with Paul Davis John Chadwick and Harry Broomall and often wonder what they are doing. Was also on the stage crew. I left Smedley for a private school and then into the Air Force and have only returned to Chester on two occasions. Thanks to Jean Goodman who has relayed much information about Chester to me! I am a "59" graduate of Smedley Jr. High School. Joseph Maron Joseph was principle. Year Books were called "The ANNUAL" during those days. When buying a lunch at school was only .25 cent then they had the nerve to raise it to .30 cent WOW! I think! Yeh, I remember Rich Murray and David DeFries. I tranferred to Smedley in '59. I remember the Friday night dances...and the St. James dances, too. Let's see...I can remember Stu Killian, Skip Gamble (he was a grade or two behind me), Pam Hook, Sally Hamer, Renee Mangan ( the girls seem easier to remember)Rich? Merchant, Brooks Sunday, Walt Soroka, Walt Dunlap, John Stokarsky (anyone remember Jimmy Kuen? played a mean trumpet). What was the name of that little luncheonette on the corner that we went to for lunch? I remember going downtown a few days prior to Halloween to paint murals on store windows. I remember that the Pope died that year, 1959-60. I also remember a terrible tragedy that happenned that year...a classmate of mine, Judy Weir, took her life.

The radio station I work for , WXHL ,the Christian music station, based in Newark, De. recently did what we call a "tailgate party" (where we pass out pizza, soda,prizes and Bibles to students) and it was held at SMEDLEY. I was a member of the class of 1981 and a drummer in the middle school band. During this time, Mr. Fred Bach was the band director, Mr. Curly was the music teacher, and Mr. Hughes was the principal. Also I enjoyed Ms. Carter as my math teacher and Ms Tierney for Social Studies. Ms. Carter was the best math teacher who taught at Smedley (during my time) and at Chester High School. My last year at Smedley was the longest academic year because of the teacher's strike. We did not get out of school until June 30, 1981.
