Taxi Services

Thanks to "Joker" Jack Chambers, jokerjak908@yahoo.com, for the following on Chester Taxi Services:

"Back in Apr 1925 when the telephone book was about 6" x 9" the back cover had a 1/4 page adv from Bell Taxi Service. They could be reached at Chester 166 for Taxi service. Cars were also available for Weddings, funerals, etc. They were listed in the book at 18 1/2 E Sixth St. (this would have been on the west side of the street, between Edgemont Ave and Welsh St.)

Bell Taxi: Would be found at the train station at 6th & Welsh. At one time they had an office and garage on the North side of Upland Ave, between 7th & 9th.

Another one of my sources (1971 information) shows a phone book listing for Wrobleski, H. Taxi Cab Service at 16 E.. 6th St., Phone Tr4-6393.  I think he owned Bell at the time. It was a door or two from Smith News Stand at 20 East 6th st., Tr2-3711.

Yellow Cab Company: in 1925 book listed at 1214 Providence, phone:Chester 3200. Yes, I typed the address correctly. I guess back then they started Providece road numbers at 1200.  It starts about 12th St. so I guess that is right. Howvever in the 1971 information they are listed at 546 Edgmont Ave, 2nd Fl,  Tr2-8888, Tr4-8888, and Tr6-8888.

"The yellow cab company was owned and operated by Morris Schwartz for many years. He was my uncle, my mother's brother. I am not sure of the years, but I know he was there in the early 40's..."

-Sandra (Liebman) Zalman (CHS '49), Caprice74@aol.com

"I believe that my Uncle Willie -- Vito -- Iacono drove for the Yellow Cab Co. in the 50's and 60's. He was always parked by the train station. He lived near 7th and Madison Sts. Really brings back memories."

Tony Iacone, St.JoesAston@aol.com

Yellow Cab could also be found at the train station. I am not sure what period of time but "Ike" Beam was the proprietor at one time. I recall they worked on the cabs in a garage on East 12th, just west of Melrose. I keep thinking they were located at 6th & Pusey at one time. Maybe someone can shed some light on this.

Chester Cab Company: also listed at this address, TR6-8161.

This location was the buildimng in the area where Edgmont Ave. and Sproul St. formed a fork in the road. It sat right next to the Penna RR underpass. I kinda remember the yellow being there and Bell being on 6th in a very small office. I do not remember Chester cab company off hand. More research needed.

Market Square Taxi, Hung out at 3rd and Market, not sure where they worked on or parked cabs when not in use."

Owned by Frank A. Figiniak for 25 years prior to Feb. 15, 1938, when he joined the police force.
