A three-year veteran of the Marine Corp's march through the South Pacific during World War II joined the Chester police force Jan. 23. He's Samuel W. Green, 33 of 1406 Honan st.

Green joined the Marines in 1943 and saw service at Guam, Iwo Jima and with the Army of Occupation in Japan. A private first class at discharge, he served with the 2nd Separate Combat Engineers attached to the 3rd Marine Division.

Educated at St. Michael's parochial school and Chester High School, he worked for the U.S. Postoffice Department  for five years as a mail carrier prior to joining the police force.

He's married to the former Alice Blake and they have three children, Michael, 11, and Sally, 6, Resurrection school students, and Claire, 3.

Green is a past president and now historian of the Irish American Club.
