Joseph W. Ryan

Joseph W. Ryan
(A biographical sketch from a Chester Times or Delaware County Daily Times newspaper clipping, "Know Your Police" from the collection of John C. "Snakes" Boyle, contributed by his granddaughters, Jane Boyle & Patty Boyle.)

Joseph W. Ryan, with 12 years on the police force to his credit, spent four of them wearing a slightly different uniform - that of the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Appointed to the police force on Dec. 10, 1941, Ryan was promoted to detective on Apr. 15, 1951.

Ryan was born Oct. 11, 1917, and was educated at St. Michael's parochial schools and the Chester High School.

Six years ago he married the former Marjorie Reese. They have two children - a daughter, Marjorie, 3; and a son, Joseph Jr. who was born New Year's Day in Sacred Heart Hospital. They live at 28 W. 8th st.

Prior to his appointment to the police force, he worked as a pipe-fitter for Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. and Sun Oil Co. He lists sports as his hobby.
