I said "goodby" and I meant it. However, I have found it very difficult to separate myself so quickly from something I have enjoyed for almost a year now. From what I have read on this board for the past week, the anonymous nasty posters refuse to say "goodbye" to me. Anyone who posts without a legitimate name, you wrongfully assume is me and your ugly words are attacking others who I am sure, are just shocked. You, my ugly friends, are the ones chasing people away. Granny, for instance, posts very enjoyable things, yet you assume she is me, and you attack her.

Never, never judge others by your own distasteful standards. If your standards were higher, you would project love, not hate, and assume that others are as gracious and as giving to humanity as you. So, your character is revealed in what you post, and intelligent people give no homage nor respect to the words you use.

If only you would realize what a disgrace your antagonisms are to this gift from John Bullock through the grace of God, perhaps you would cease and desist. This is not a "private site" nor a "chat room"; it is a website open to anyone and everyone throughout the WORLD. What must the rest of this country think now about a small, little-known city south of Philadelphia, that contributed so much to the very beginning of this country and then our blood, sweat and tears to defend this proud country during every war, especially WW11. What a disgrace we are to a our proud and hard-working ancesters, without whom even the "internet" would not be possible.

Some of you may resent my "memories", but by God, I have every right to post them as I remember them; and I am very proud of the many, yes many, memories I have written down here for future generations to perhaps read and enjoy and think, "Wow - that's something I never knew" or "imagine having to do that" = like hanging your living room rug on the clothesline to beat, in order to clean it."

My generation was indeed a "genteel" generation; men were gentleman and women were ladies. All that has changed, but for better?

If you choose to post attacking other posters, what are you teaching future generations? Someone said here just recently that there are many intelligent people just waiting to get on this board, but it is monopolized by the oldchester critic". That remark alone is not only ignorant, but the utmost insult to this site and everything it was created to do. I said I would no longer post; now where are all these people with memories to post? Where, indeed are the posts? I hoped my departure would make that possible, however no posts of memories, but several leaches still hanging on to appease themselves to attack - and if you think it makes you look "important"; WRONG - too much anger, hostility and jealousy - three of the seven deadly sins. WOW! Only four more to go, then BINGO! Try to remember to "Do unto others, as you would like done to yourself". Remember that!

I have asked for guidance in order to post this, and I humbly ask for the support of all of you who respect this site and want the elimination of disrespectful remarks and the furtherance of the honor of our birthplace to continue. Chester's people were good, honest, hard working and God-fearing people with a lot of self-respect and respect for each other.

I suggest to all who care about this site to perhaps pick a day and time, and together we will pray for God's help to restore this site to what John Bullock meant it to be. The anniversary of 911 is just days away; let's remember that halocost with reverence for not only those who perished, but the living who hurt, and hurt, and make a solemn oath to respect and try to soothe hurts.

If you care to set a date and time, I will respond and we will and can do it.

6:19PM..Tuesday 82756 Date: 31 Aug 2002 6:12PM ..84250

In less than 1 week..1494 people have viewed this message board...since my last post 58 have left messages. A lot of people have opened the door to oldchesterpa and entered but did not leave a calling card... and there is plenty of room on the message board to leave it. Why would just afew messages on a board of such interest and history stop people from writing here.. you were given a gift many years ago and then two years ago you were given a gift again by Mr. Bullock..I think you are a lucky people. Your first ammendment was given you as a part of your histroy, and it still is the envy of people around this world.

Let Freedom Ring. Last I heard this was still a free country and anyone that has something to say is welcome to do it. John has enough problems with out everyone using up space. If you don't like it pass by it. no one says you have to read it.Whether you like it or not Pat has contributed a lot of Chester history. Now is the time we should all be pulling together not apart.

To the person who suggests that certain people email instead of posting on this site - honey, you have no idea of what goes on behind the scene. You might try emailing yourself, I mean to yourself and others, instead of posting your unnecessary and useless ccomments. If by Irrevelant, you meant irreverent, you are right, there is a lot of disrespectful remarks posted here. If you meant irrelevant which means not relating to anything worthwhile here, then you are again correct, your post was irrelevant.

Bob: I remember the Lomas brothers. I remember a Bob marth, the wojs, and Paul. I lived across the street from Paul. I hung with Pete Rhoads. I just found out a month ago when I saw Elaine while I was out to dinner that her brother Jerry had passed not to long ago. He had post truamatic stress syndrome from Vietnam, but I on't know if that contributed to his death. I didn't really question Elaine because I was stunned to hear it. Jerry was also my friend. He would have been about 50 I guess. I probably know you.

Knitwit: Ella Mae Morse was one of my favorites too. I was in Laughlin, NV last year and read that she had passed away and that she lived in Bullhead City, AZ which is across the river from Laughlin. It is very interesting reading the comments here, but the largest percentage of em are after my time in Chester.

i've been reading all the recent posts about the "rez" reunion and looking at the photos. wow, did it bring up lots of growing up memories. i recognized several of the older "10th street" gang. only recognized 1 of the younger ones being margie mylett. my goodness--she looks the same as i remember her when we were young. i seen a post from her brother pat and sister katheleen too. i grew up next door to the mylett's. my grandparents raised me. i am mr. and mrs. coppock's grandaughter . i didn't attend rez, but just about my whole neighborhood did. i used to pal around with maria henderson, susan baron, the quinn kids, delorio's, sweeney's , maher's,,,,,,,i knew all the neighborhood people too. growing up on 10th street was great. it was such a nice neighborhood. i sure do miss the way it used to be. i could go on and on.

There was also a store across the street that sold some fabrics, linens and other items...does anyone remember the name of that store?

I had a lot of great friends in my neighborhood. A lot of wonderful things happened and also a few sad things. It is life, the good with the bad. I say a prayer for your boy every day. You know that song kids lrarn for their first chorus in school, I have een thinking about it, it goes, Let their be peace on earth and let it begin with me. remember.

What is it about Chester that has created such a strong sense of attachment to the City?

Is it memories of the old neighborhood where kids played games like 'kick the can'and 'stick ball' after school with their friends?

Is it memories of walking to school with your friends?

Is it about a time when kids weren't playing video games and computer games and head phones playing music to isolate themselves from the world?

Is it memories of riding the bus to town to shop instead of going to a Mall?

Is it memories of a kinder and gentler time?

What is the intangible that draws so many to this site?

What do you think?

Shirley: After I posted I HAD to know if I was right or not. Here is what I found in a search.

"(All-American Band Leaders, July, 1942). In 1939, at the suggestion of booking agent Willard Alexander, McKinley joined forces with Will Bradley (formerly Wilber Schwitsenberg) to form the "Will Bradley Orchestra featuring Ray McKinley." With McKinley on vocals and drums, the band's several hits included Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar, Down the Road Apiece and Celery Stalks at Midnight."

I attended St Michael's during the Bay of Pigs scare. I was very young, but I remember during the drills when the sirens would go off we would have to go below the school and practice what we would do if the Communists would bomb the United States. I think that I remember going into what seemed like tunnels between the school and the church. Am I remembering correctly? Are there tunnels underground that go from the school to the church, or was it just a young child's fear and imagination?

"Does anyone remember Woolworths." Oh YES! On Edgmont Ave. - and the lunch counter there. Enjoyed many a good lunch and milkshake there as a teen. Bought paperbacks in their book section. If I recall, there was a downstairs section there also. Hal, you also wrote, "Remember when the stores closed at 5:30 and stayed open late on Fridays!!" Sure do - downtown Chester was THE place to shop on Friday nights. My parents often took me down there when I was a lad. Speare's Weinberg's, Murray's (no relation), Sears - especially nice at Christmas time. "The snows of yesteryear" eh?

I remember one thing about the Morton Ave Grade school was the second grade teacher in 1943 had the sharpest finger nails she hated these "Ky school Children" (as many came up from the south to work.made that statement too) She would raise you out of your seat for no reason at all with those finger nails dug into your ear lobes.

Boy, only a local yocal would call Village Cafe "Rubes". That was always an adventure. Lot of the 10th street gang would hang there. Vesuvio's was the site of my first date "back in the day" with a girl who worked in Ginos. And just who did rent those rooms in the back by the miniature golf?

The games people play.

If all people, regardless of posting names or not, would post interesting facts about Old Chester,(the purpose of this site), and leave irrevelant personal banter for your own personal e-mails. The chat rooms have disappeard for lack of interest. It needs not to be carried to this posting board. Irrevelant chit chat about other cities, states and any self inflating ego banter has no place here.

Enough with the long winded useless ego inflating information posted which take up a lot of costly space and serves no purpose for any other person except the poster. Brief and interesting facts about Chester, just the facts ladies and gentleman, just the facts.

There are a lot more people out there who would love to post on this board but feel what they post will be picked apart by the "clique" who have taken over as their own personal website. Total disrespect for the person who started this site. I am sure he wants to reach out to many more new people, with roots in Chester, who have so much to contribute. When someone new logs on, find nothing but useless chit chat, then they feel threaten that their contribution would be ignored or picked apart. Has the concept of this website gone stale?

Hope not because I am sure a there are a lot more to be said by new posters who have interesting facts to share.

In fact, just in a conversation with a woman I met on a bus, she mentioned the fact that her husband worked for years at a store in Chester called "Herbert's". Had forgotten about that one and don't see it listed under businesses.

So you see, there is so much more to relate about Chester and not about other states or countries.

I have been coming to this sight for months now but have never post anything on The Newsstand board. I like to say that this is a open forum based on our first amendment. A right given to each citizens of the United States of America. I may not agree with ever word that is posted here night after night but I will not and should not judge one because of there believes and convictions. I chose to read and then pass by what (I Feel) is not worth the time. Because of the open forum of this web sight. (But I usually read 99% of the postings).Yes the site is about Chester, But there's no rule that says we can't mix it up a little.Or change the content of the board for a few hours or state a personal comment. There's always a posting about Chester some were or some time in between. That's my view. I grew up in Chester and in the mid 70's did four years in the Air Force. Came back for a year or so in the 80's. My roots may lye some were elks but you can never take Chester out of my heart. I still have many brother and sister and my dear Mother living in the area. My Father is resting in peace in the soil of Chester. Good day to all.

I've known pidipat for a long time and I want to apologize for what I put on this site yesterday. She is a good person and I sincerely apologize to her and to you people. I am not a mean person and there is no excuse for what I said (except maybe a few beers). She adds much to this site with her memories and friendships. I've been away from Chester since the early 70s and I've forgotten what the old town meant to me. Again, Pat, I'm sorry.

AGAIN, a no-name has the brass ones to criticize those of us who post our real names. I have said we all should have a place on this board to talk about Chester but the no-names have a protection so they can be nasty or whatever they want to be. Pat & I clashed in the beginning and as adults resolved our differences. No-names can't do that b/c they give nothing of theirselves. I will continue to post when I feel like it but then again the clique have other places to go & have fun so post some memories instead of worring about two Irish ladies.

Kate you are another one. There was a time when you clashed heads with her, now that you have joined the clique, everyone else is wrong but you two. more class? that's debateable, you mean brass! more education? ho hum, that's debateable! more memeories of Chester? You mean more posts about Arizona and England than Chester.

As a senior who still resides 5 minutes from Chester, all should be welcomed on this board, young and old, residents and former residents. Names, No names. Ficticious names, Aliases, Anonymouses, whatever!

Now maybe some of the old posters will once again feel comfortable to post again.

The clique needs to be desolved and the posts should be about all about Chester.

After all, there are a heck of a lot more people in Chester and from Chester than those two.

Hi, I've been lurking on this oldchester site for a long time and something is starting to annoy me. There's my old acquaintance, Pat, from REZ who told me about this web site. I never did like her but it seems as though she has made some friends...and look they all have names. I hope nobody ever finds out who I am. That's one of the reasons I never use my name when I post. I swore I'd never get into a conversation on this site. But it really annoys me that she has all those friends. Look there's Harvey and Florence and Caroline and Ed and Kate and Ray and Ruth and where will it end? I'll just have to break my vow of silence this one time and put her down. I'll tell all my anonymous friends she isn't as smart as she says she is. That will hurt her! All I have to do is squiggle out from under this rock and...

Who are you to say that because I am 42 that I don't have any GOOD, CLEAN memories? I think that you OLDER people need to learn some manners and stop treating others so rudely. No wonder so many stay annonymous. It's because of people like you two.

I remember Vesuevio's on 9th street. I discovered it somewhere around 1958. I was in the CHS class of 1956 so I was already out of school and a mother. I would take my daughter for a walk and stop at Vesuevio's. She loved their pizza and cheese steaks.

Florence, hello, thanks for asking about my son who is in the service, today he is still on US soil and doing fine but I never know from day to day. Keep those prayers coming for peace.

Patricia, I for one am very disappointed that you will not post on here any longer. OCB needs you & your memories. I think the reason the no-names and negative remarks come out of the closet when you post is b/c they will pick on anyone who has more class, education, and has good memories from Chester, the "kids" on here (anyone younger thanaround 45) don't have the good times to remember, Chester was fading fast after the 60's & before so they don't share the same good, clean memories of your generation. And the ones who never left are full of hatred as anyone can see by some of there posts. This is only my opinion but as far as I know everyone is allowed space on this board and for the ones who never post a memory or anything of importance stop spreading your nastiness. I learned a lot from this board and especially from Pat and her friends know she never intentionally hurt anyone & if she did would always apologize, she taught me to do that too!!

Hi Everyone! I was not going to post for awhile but thought I may as well. First – my sincere condolences to the family of George Malick. He was a good man and shall be very much missed. He contributed a great deal to this page. To Jerry - Jerry spevak – Yes, Andy Buffano had a barbershop at the corner of 17th and Providence Ave. It was right on the corner. I don’t remember Al although I may have met him. My Father and Andy were friends since they were kids. Andy had a laryngectomy – his larynx had been removed. He swallowed air in order to speak. When I was an early teen my Dad took me up there for our haircuts. Dad privately explained to me what had happened to him. My Dad was a great piano player – I still have his tapes here – he liked ragtime – Scott Joplin, etc. He told me that Andy Buffano was the best piano teacher he had ever met. He could not play in public – Dad did however and had his own bands at one time – this is how I came to know the Caruso family – but he said Andy was the best piano teacher he ever knew. Apparently Andy had shown Dad a few tricks on the keyboard. Dad always had a ton of girls around him when he played. One of them was to become my Mother. (SMILE). Good parents. I still miss them. Anyway. Andy was a slim old gentleman, with white hair, and yes, he had a white bandage over his throat. Like I said – he swallowed air to speak. He always looked so straight and dignified in his white coat. He was a nice man, a good barber – when Dad spent some time in the hospital – Crozer - Andy would come in and cut his hair. They had been friends since they were kids. Both gone now, sadly. To a no name who wrote “Man, I'm in the mood for a LaSpada's Italian hoagie with mayo, I like it that way!” HA! HA! To MY tiny, little mind, putting mayo on a hoagie is like putting catsup on a filet mignon. But this is JUST how my Dad liked his hoagies – with mayo. We first used to get them from Irene’s hoagie shop around 11thand Kerlin – on the corner. She was a Polish lady who ran a good store. Forget her last name. Dad always ordered mayo on his hoagie. Whatever. For me - I like “salt, sage and oil” but to each his own. Dad used to like mayo on his cheesesteaks too. I shudder to think about THAT one but I was always a “too each his own” type person so whatever. Memories, eh? And here’s my two cents worth on the Great Hoagie Debate here – and it’s worth about two cents – maybe less. Three words – Phil and Jim’s. Had them all in Chester and points beyond – I traveled a lot at one time and out west they call them either “submarines” or “torpedoes” and they put bologna on them – BOLOGNA!. It’s basically a bologna sandwich in some areas. Some cheese, tomatoes and lettuce – OK. But mostly bologna and cheese. Hell, and I thought MAYO was weird! But Phil and Jim’s was the best to me. With “salt, sage and oil”. And lots of hot peppers. Anyway. As always – my best to everyone on the Historic Chester PA page. And to Mr. John Bullock – you have no idea, sir, how much your efforts are appreciated. I look forward to meeting you someday and shaking your hand. You have done a great deal for a good many people. God Bless.

With deep regret, really deep regret, this is the last message/story/memory I will post here. I have thoroughly enjoyed being on this board and all the truly wonderful old friends and new warm friendships I have made here.

Apparently, some of my messages are misinterpreted and anger people, all of which have been soothed, overcome and we went on to new subjects, etc. However, the post by DJM, who is a male by the way and doesn’t want his name disclosed, has chosen to slander me and in essence, called me a liar. He has his own reasons for doing this, which I will not go into, but it is almost impossible to defend yourself against lies, one of the biggest inhumanities to man, in my way of thinking.

All that I said regarding my schooling and financial conditions at home were true. Anyone can check public school records from Rez and get information on me. In high school, I did not do that well. DJM did not live in my house during my high school years, nor did we see each other during that time, so he has no idea what caused my switch from ND to CHS. My mother wanted me to quit school and work full-time. An alternative was reached. Switch to CHS and work part-time, which I did. I would sign an affidavit or swear to anyone that I have never lied in any post - mistaken at times, but never purposely lied. However, I still feel there will be people who will not believe a word I say, so to avoid “cluttering up” the board with negatives, I would rather just leave.

Also, I have deep respect for all the hard work and money John Bullock invests in this site and I cringe every time it is used to attack.

I hope you have enjoyed some of the many memories I have posted here and I have given you a laugh or two. However, in order to keep things peaceful and hopefully working in the manner intended, goodbye and may God bless this site and John Bullock every day.

Jerry S: I remember my father used to go to this barber when I was a kid and he took me once in a while to get my hair cut, too. But most of the time my mom cut it. But I remember this guy had a piece of white cloth covering his throat and talked funny. I never knew what was wrong with him until I got older. It was near the Goodwill firehouse. Would this happen to be the same barbershop?

TO CAROLINE

Just saw the pictures you made of Trainer Rocks. Don't know how I missed them. Like many others from the West End I spent hours there---my sister lived in Trainer, just across the road from Buckman airport. I remember an old abandoned plant, close to where the water ran under Ridge Road. I don't know what they manufactured there but I heard other kids say that it used to be a soap factory. I think that old plant was the builder of the row homes the kids called "Bedbug Row". BTW, the Park you mentioned is named for Henry Johnson, a really nice guy who was Mayor of Trainer back in the '70s.

Thanks for the memories

Could some please post where it was held. Accommadating 700 people is quite an achievement.

Pidipat...You were the person that introduced this site to me and since I've been reading it, I swore that I would never enter into any converstions on this website. But there have recently been some misconceptions that I would like to respond to (never end a sentence with a preposition, right?). First, I went to school with you at Rez and you were not one of the top scholars, at least from sixth through eigth grades. After Rez, I do not know how you did at Notre Dame or Chester High but I'd be willing to bet that you have exaggerated a bit. And the too poor to pay for Notre Dame, I don't believe that either. Hell, we lived in Mc Caffrey and you lived in Buckman (the high rent district back then). Jack Waldron had a scholarship to St. Joes and then went to Notre Dame and became a professor at St. Joes. I really think that you spend too much time living in the past and remembering things that only you can remember. You should really try reading or watching PBS or like someone else said, volunteering.

Isn't it ironic that Pat challenges the negative posters?? Isn't she the person who posted the original negative remark about the REZ reunion?? Maybe she is what Chester needs for its comeback. Somebody like Pat with all her brains who can criticize people's grammar and spelling and knows the right way of doing everything. Maybe she should move back to Chester and become mayor. Pat seems to know everything about everything. Maybe she should put all those brains of hers to some good use for a change. Isn't she so humble?? Glad she informed us all that there was at least one smart person who came out of Chester.

The time rolls around for all of us, noboddy missed. We will see what happens. You know Kate, they used to call my grandmother Kate all the time, and I still don't know why, her name was Marion.Stay healthy and safe Kate.

Practice what you preach. Who wants to hear any more about Arizona, England, and all the other trivial nonsense? Ever since this site started this one individual thinks she is the leader of the gang. She monopolizes with monotonus unintersting trivia. I stopped posting a while back and occassionaly log on to see if anything new is going on. Same old by the same old.

It's not the no names but the posted name who presents the controversies. As far as the Rez reunion, had she been on the committee, she would have chewed the old Prospect Park woman out by telling her you make your own fun. 699 to 1 had a great time! JEALOUSY! The GREEN EYE MONSTER FROM ARIZONA HAS STRIKED AGAIN. HAS TO HAVE THE LAST SAY!

TOO BAD, IT WAS A GOOD SITE AT ONE TIME, NOW IT'S A ME, ME, I CHALLENGE, I AM ALWAYS RIGHT, POSTING/CHAT BOARD.

This business of the "knowns verses the unknowns and prevailing," sounds like a 2nd graders recess game. "I'm goanna punish you because you refuse to post your name" LOL ROTFLMAO

BTW, YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION TO CORRECT MY SPELLING, PUNCTUATION AND GRAMMAR. IT WILL GIVE YOU SOMETHING ELSE BETTER TO DO. BETTER YET, TRY KNITTING.

This is my first time on this web site. I think it is absolutely fascinating. I am currently piecing together a photgraphic history of Chester and I found something interesting. When I clicked on the old "What Chester Makes Makes Chester" sign of this website I saw that the structure was built in 1926 and that there was a contest to come up with the slogan. I have a book about Chester from 1914 and a slogan similar to "What Chester Makes Makes Chester" is on the second page! 13 years before the sign was erected. I thought this was sort of strange. Please e-mail if someone has further information. Thanks.

Well, I thought I would lighten up things a little bit, it got to heated. I grew up until I was 13 on 18th & Providence ave (east end). My Dad cut the hedges and cut grass at the Church across the street ( I think it was a protestant church). I used to go there during Bible school in the summer. In those days nobody cared what you did for a living, you just took care of your family. He used to cook breakfast for us when we attended Mass at St. Roberts.

Well, thought I would share that happy moment. Since everyone else has bad things to talk about.

Have fun-this is what this site is all about.

Frankly I don't think anyone should have to defend him or herself for an opinion or post. If all this energy that is spent on trying to figure out what was meant by this or that word -which is written --were put in to remembering some of the great things that happened in our youth in Chester, this Message board would again come alive with memories. It only takes one memory to refresh our fading thoughts.

The cost of this Message board for the webmaster is not inexpensive and the updating of the "What's new" section is not an easy job. it is time consuming. John has a life outside of Oldchesterpa. But "oldchesterpa" has grown to such proportions that it is becoming his full time job. Each time something new is added it adds to the cost of the web site. Many Volunteers have given their time to keep this site alive and filled with information that is not only a part of your history and life in Chester, but can be part of your "family Tree". Where else can you find such vivid notes on your childhood. Where else can you sit in your armchairs and find all you need to about your old hometown. The cost of this website comes from John's pocket and the items he has available through

http://www.oldchesterpa.com/store.htm

Earlier I posted a message regarding Merchant Ships ....I have received not less then 10 emails from people with regard to this post. That’s what the board is about. It is a portal to the Past and Present..

And, Caroline - in today's history - August 24, we begin the battle of the anonymous v. the knowns. With any luck, the "knowns" will prevail, and it will last no longer than 2 days. It's liable to be more fierce than the battle of the Eastern Solomons, but no casualties.

Hey Jocko - another bad assumption. I did go to Notre Dame and at the top of my class, I might add. And just prior to graduation from Rez, I was sent to Philadelphia to try for a scholarship based on my grades. Unfortunately, I was not granted that - no Rez kid received it that year, except our classmate John Waldron who did receive a scholorship to Notre Dame University later on. As I understand it, his test scores have NEVER been equalled - to this day. I am very proud to have known John personally, because I highly respect intelligence. But don't kid yourself, I was darn smart. No brag/fact! I come from a poor family with a working mother and nobody to help me, so I have worked for everything I have, and I thank God for my brain. I Transferred to Chester High in my junior year for financial reasons. I had to take a job after school to help out at home. And, this was no fun because I could not attend a lot of the extracurricular activities there; basketball, drama, etc.

Any more false assumptions? With your spelling, punctuation, etc., I'm surprised you graduated at all. You use your own language - "heah papt" - what kind of language is that? The only way I knew you meant me was Rez 46 - at least you got that right - somewhat right - should be '46.

I feel I must respond to one more item. My friend cannot "speak/post" for herself because she has no computer, and is not interested in either learning or using one. I keep begging her to do this, but she keeps putting it off. Some folks are just not interested in doing this, and I respect her decision.

Deaf One - you are absolutely correct. Everytime, I post and am ganged up on - almost all the time - readership does go up. People do love controversy, don't they? All you have to do is look at the top of this page to the rolling "number".

I hereby challenge every anonymous/negative poster to post something positive and of interest to all. I challenge you. If you do not respond to this challenge, then it is obvious, you have nothing positive to add. Prove yourself.

If those of you who remain anonymous but critical would read the first entry about the reunion, MAYBE you would understand that I was replying to Harvey's post about how great he understood the reunion was. I became very interested because my friend thought otherwise and I asked where Harvey found that information because it was contradictory to what I heard and it had saddened me.

That was the only time I posted about the reunion and was delighted to know that it was indeed a great success and my friend's experience lay in her own perspective. I would not have posted anything further until my friend was personally attacked for her feelings. That is now settled, and it would be better for all, if you realize the facts and stop criticizing, where there is nothing to criticize. At one point, I even said that I was very glad that the reunion was a huge success and I will tell my friend - and I know she too will be happy to hear that.

I have suggested many times that you use this board to post your memories of growing up in Chester (I think this is one reason for this site), but you don't. Next time you feel this overwhelming desire to criticize, change your thinking to - "what can I post of interest to my generation about my earlier life and times in Chester? You're more than likely apt to start a whole bunch of posts about the same thing, and get a good feeling about what you have done. I cannot, as much as I have tried to figure it out, understand why you enjoy criticizing others. Put your sneers and growls in your hip pocket, and a smile on your face and even the world will look different to you.

RE: Merchant Ships from the Chester Area. I am looking for information on the "Pacific Sun" ...it was built at Sun Ship and was a tanker...I have pictures of the ship during WWII with unID'd mates. Also photos of the crew of the Eugene V. Thayer. Not sure what year the Thayer pictures were taken but since the ship was sunk in 1942 I would assume that there were before that time. Don't know if the Thayer was built at Sun, but had to ship out from the Oil depots in Hook or Wilmington.

http://www.armed-guard.com/eugenevr.jpg

Since my uncle shipped out of Marcus Hook, (Gulf, Sinclair, Sun) I would assume many of these people are from this area.

Please email me regarding any information you might remember. I'd greatly appreciate it. Once compiled, I will add to John's web site.

TRISH: I had a feeling you were Bill's daughter and Bill was one of my very favorite people growing up in Buckman Village. I had heard he lost a leg and when you hear things like that about someone you knew so well and respected, you feel the same loss, and I did. Had I known where to contact him, I would have written him and also to discuss the loss of a mutual friend, Butch McGinn (as you know, they were life-long buddies). I also know that Bill would have let me know Butch had passed away, had he known where to reach me. Also, the loss of John - I felt that deeply. I understand he was staying with your dad when he passed away. Now, Bill is the only surviving sibling and he is the oldest.

You dad, as I understand it, was also very active at Rez with the little league, etc.; did some great work with the kids. What a guy! But somehow I always knew Bill was a special type fellow. Please give him my love and one thing he never knew, I always thought he had the deepest, cutest dimples I've ever seen - even when he wasn't smiling, the dimples were always there.

It's always so nice to be in touch and know where our friends are. And, you can tell Bill that I gave you hell for what I considered uncalled for remarks!!! He'll laugh.

Just wanted to drop a line in regard to all the brouhaha over the rez reunion. If someone wants to make some remark that seems inflammatory, I would just ignore it. More importantly, there was an article in the Daily Times about a girl who has leukemia. A lot of people can help her and people just like her who have that disease just by donating blood. What could help even more, you can donate blood platelets. Platelets can only be donated by about half of the population, due to the absence of certain viruses in a person's blood. Both of these processes are very safe, and take about an two hours a month to do, and take up less stress than fighting about who said what to whom. So, remember, its not nice to fight.

To MC: Perhaps my use of the word "uncomplimentary" was not wise, but a better word I can't think of right now. I did not, nor want to go into detail and I did not. I apologize if you read other meanings into the word, but that happens when you write. I can certainly appreciate the hard work that goes into this type of a celebration and wanting it to turn out terrific for everyone, and I do not think I said anything "hurtful" to those whose endeavors contributed so much. That was not and still is not my intent. I did not know it went from 150 to 700 in such a short time; I'm sure my friend didn't know that either - but rain or shine, she will attend anything having to do with her schools, old friends, family, etc.

So, as someone said one time, "Before you go to the boss with a problem, have a solution in mind." So, what better word would you have used?

To: Shirley Lambert: I sincerly appreciate your post regarding my dear and most loving friend who is the most supportive person I know when it comes to Rez, Notre Dame, Buckman Village, her parents, her siblings and most of all her six beautiful and highly intelligent children. each of whom has contributed, not only to the Chester community, but the nation as a whole, and all six of whom she raised alone after the loss of her husband when the youngest was still in diapers.

I would have not responded at all to the happy posts regarding the reunion had it not been for the remark, "felt compelled to discribe REZ Event with Uncomplimentry Things. You Must Of Been Unhappy Then And May Still Be. That is ok there always is someone you just can't . . ."

She did not feel "compelled" for one thing; she was merely telling me about it during the course of our long conversation regarding many other things besides the reunion; then the suppositions about her happiness or unhappiness (believe me, she was one of the happiest kids in school) was completely uncalled for. "Unhappy then; unhappy now!!" These are unncessary and cruel statements for anyone of a younger generation to make regarding someone who shares the same background, but different generation.

As part of your future plans, you might consider a special event during the reunion "honoring" those graduates still around from the earlier years - perhaps even setting aside a room somewhere where they can all meet and then giving them the respect they deserve by calling upon them one by one to appear "on stage". Then, you would have true "defense of siblings and OUR roots!!!

In all due respect to the younger generations, I submit my feelings and suggestions - in the honor of Resurrection of our Lord school and church - no one individual, but all of us collectively.

TO Pat, The way you phrased your original message was that your friend had some uncomplimentary remarks about the REZ reunion. To me and probably others the use of the word uncomplimentary sounds like she was not happy with the way the night was organized. I am not from REZ nor did I go to the reunion. But I have been on the organizing end of events and I know that no matter what you do you can't please everyone. I always thought that when volunteers put such hard work into something out of the goodness of their heart, that people should keep words like uncomplimentary to themselves and certainly not utter them on a message board that is read by these organizers. It is hurtful to those people who did all that hard work. It seems to me that your original comment had nothing to do with not seeing familiar faces at the reunion and comments such as this could only be hurtful.

Dear Pat:

As part of the Rez Alumni Committee I would like to sincerely apologize to your friend who suffered from heat exhaustion that day. I know who you are talking about because Dave Kasarsky and myself personally offered her water and cool towels but she just wanted to leave. She did not stay very long at our event (possibly an hour). Her family was accomodating her so there wasn't much for us to do for her.

We also had air conditioning in the larger part of the building if people wanted to get out of the heat. We also had access to the pool, which alot of folks enjoyed!

Yes, we have some things we need to work on for future events. This was our first event and I believe it was a huge success for many with many more good memories to follow!

As for Trish's comments, Trish is a kind person who would do anything for anyone. She is just defending her roots like all good siblings do in a family!

All of us on the REZ Committee truly appreciate the support that the Alumni have given us! We can't wait to do it again!

P.S. - Constructive criticism is always welcomed by us!

Love ya all!

Shirley, Matty, Bob, Helen, Marie, Dave, Linda, Mary and Karen

In defense of my friend from Prospect Park who was disappointed in the event, I ask that you not make unkind remarks about her opinion of the reunion. No one loved that school more than she did and when it closed she was generous enough to send me a wonderful sweatshirt with "The Lord is Risen" and HIM carrying his cross on the front in green, and Chester, PA on the back. This was one of the memorabilia they were selling when it closed. Everytime I wear it people here in Phoenix stop and ask about it. Had it more than 10 years now; they even sold memorabilia of the same good "quality" as the people they graduated every year.

Our class graduated from Rez in 1946 - quite a few years earlier than 1965-85, and consequently, we have lost many dear classmates through death or present serious illnesses. When you attend a "reunion" of an alma mater, it's heartbreaking to not see familiar faces. She also suffered from the heat of that day, and if there was music, it was probably not "our day" music; so age, heat and other factors can be debilitating to we seniors. So, forgive her because I will tell her how much enjoyment all the "younger generations" had and I'm sure that will make her happy. She did love Rez, as did I with all the wonderful carefree school day memories. And, incidently, Trish Waldron, if you are related to the Waldrons from Buckman Village (Bill, John and Artie) these boys were part of our lives, especially John, our brilliant classmate (now deceased as is Artie) at Rez. If you are a relative, my friend and I are a part of your heritage.

Tolerance of those who went before you and possibly made the path easier and better should be respected as you would like to be respected when you are a senior citizen.

John B:

I am happy to see that you have updated the "oldchesterpa" web family about our reunion ---spread the word.

Your suggestion to bring items for the Salvation Army is a SHARING that is a sign of love for the less fortunate. For those that will not be able to attend and would like to make a donation to show support for your website, is there a address such an offering can be sent?

And what is John's sauce like....you know I will be at the reunion if for nothing else but to get some of that famous sauce on the hot dogs the youth group will have available for us. What a lovely way for the kids to be part of a happening. A donation for a lunch is a marvelous idea. And you know from the posts here lately we love our food.

At one time I lived at the corner of 14th and Edgemont Ave. This week I am in the area for a family reunion. As my brother and I drive around the old neighborhood (after being gone for 40 years) I am curious about some of the old buildings that Weidner College now use as frat houses. Also the history of the DeShong Park and musuem.

For a reunion that was pulled together in less than 5 months for the entire alumni of "Rez", it could not have been better. The turnout was amazing. Many thanks go out to those that accompished this task. Being able to reunite with classmates, friends, family and neighbors left everyone with a big smile on their face and in their heart long after it ended. The memories of growing up in Chester are priceless. Aug. 17, 2002 will now join those memories.

How could anyone not have fun at a friends and family reunion? If it was a little disorganized that probably owes to the fact that the event snowballed from 150 to 700 in about three weeks. We'll all do it again and hopefully break 1,000 next time.

Re Linvilla Orchards - The real story is about how the neighbors and community as a whole have responded to this tragedy. Besides all kinds of manpower, they have been lending all types of equipment including a big earth mover with owner attached. Tents and all kinds of tables and tools as well as selling supplies have been provided by these nice people and it is now business as usual. Its nice to hear a story about people doing good things for a change. Ray

Hog Island is in the Delaware River not far from Phila. International Airport...I believe at one time, coinciding with it's name, hogs were raised there as cattle were in other areas of the country...The stories I heard from Aunts and Uncles now deceased were that the workers were limited in how often they could get back to the 'mainland' during the work day/week...Someone took 'Italian' sandwiches out to them, and they became known as 'Hoggies'... I believe that after a period of time the 'Italian' sandwiches, at least locally, came to be called 'Hoagies' because of this...Could be true, who knows for sure?

To +++, You are correct about "the Cellar", it was on Garfield Ave in Woodlyn and was owned by Larry Matero(???) and his wife. 2 sons Tony and Johnny also worked there, they later owned the "T" Bar on MacDade Blvd. They also had a sister that I think was married to one of the Earo's from the bakery. They served great food, I used to shoot darts, eat Scallopini sandwich's and drank lots of beer there in the late 40's and early 50's. My pal Bill McGuigon lived next door, his brother was Harry McGuigon who was a jockey.

My recollection about 'Hoagies' is that the workers on Hog Island needed a big lunch as they could not get off the island as easily as they might have wished...Someone thought of making them 'Italian' sandwiches, these became known as Hoggies...later people just started calling the 'Italian' sandwiches 'Hoagies'....Who knows, could be true...

Re: All the great commentary on Chester "Hoagies"

I can remember, in the early-to-mid 30's, walking with my older sister from our home on Reaney St to Dicostanza's on Third St to buy "Italian Sandwiches". That is what was painted on their window and that is what they advertised, in the paper,"Italian Sandwiches". The rolls were as long as what is now called "Large" or "Super" and the sandwich cost all of $0.25 When Buddy got in the business in the West End he also sold Italian Sandwiches. When--and why did they suddenly become "hoagies"? I never heard the word till I got out of the Navy.....and up to that time never saw them anywhere else.

In reference to Miss Brown at Morton School, there were two Miss Browns!, they were sisters, one probably worked at another Chester school, because she would pick her sister up at Morton at the end of the day. All I know is that she had a strong set of fingernails, and I probably still have the imprints in my neck! In case you were wondering the School building is still standing at 7th Morton Ave, I had the oppotunity to fire the furnance for Mrs Smith(Principal) while the janitor was out sick. I think that was my calling for the U.S. Navy and later General Motors where I am today.

Ted Dobrowski - I started my academic career at Morton Ave. School in Feb. 1938. I remember that they discontinued the midyear program when I was in the second grade and I had to do a year and a half in second in order to make the adjustment. Needless to say, I was not too happy about the idea. But, I lived.

I do not remember a teacher by the name of Brown. But I left in the middle of the third grade to attend St Clement's in Phila. I do remember a Mrs. Cummings and her daughter who taught first and second grades. In the third grade I had Mrs. Carter. Does this bring back any memories?

Gee..what can I say..I Couldnt wait to get out of Chester when I joined the Navy at 17. I never bothered with any of the reunions, never looked back or cared to. Chester and all who lived in it be Dammed was my attitude. Now good or bad..I'm drawn to reminisce..to fondly remember. I guess What Chester makes...also made us who we are, and It's time to accept that and, try to remember the good times of growing up no matter how tough we thought we had it...It could have been worse. There are positive memorys and friends who never should have been forgotten as much as they have been. So I hope to see some of you at a 30th "75" class reunion if we have one, and could someone tell me currently where the best hoagies are...Man I would kill for some scrapple right now!!!

Geez I almost forgot to post the last chapter of our olde England oddities. After this one, you will have to post your own memories of your own peculiar way of life - in good taste, that is.

They (meaning our ancesters in olde England) also had lead cups and when they would drink their ale or whiskey, the combination would sometimes knock them out for a couple of days (boiler-makers, perhaps). These people were often thought to be dead. So, they would be picked up and taken home to be buried. (Apparently, it was "mens' night out" - men haven't changed much. I can almost hear those poor wives crying out - "Bring 'em home alive Casey".) Since there was a possibility that they weren't really dead, they would lay out the body on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait to see if they would wake up. That's where the custom of holding a "wake" came from (I often wondered about that - never did make sense to me - why the word "wake"?).

Since England is old and small, they started running out of places to bury people. Once they began digging up some coffins (now, why would they dig up some coffins - to recycle them, maybe?), they found that one out of 25 had scratch marks on the inside. They realized they had still been burying people alive. So, they started tying a string on the deceased's wrist and placing a bell at the end of it up above ground. Someone would sit out in the graveyard all night to listen for the bell. That is how the saying "graveyard shift" was made. If the bell rang, they would know that someone was "saved by the bell", or he was a "dead ringer"!!!!!!!

HOWEVER, even the really, really dead rose from their graves, when the hoagies arrived in February from Italy - later they ordered them from Chester.

THE END.

Now, let's hear it for grande olde England for leaving us with these worthless bits of useful trivia.

TO "good ole joe"! Just read your post of 4/30 regarding "4 westen Aces". That was Bill Hailey and the 4 Western Aces who had the daily radio show at WPWA and the group also appeared at what I believe to be Radio Park owned by WPWA. His theme song was "I'm sending you a big bouquet of roses". I lived in the same apartment building as he and his wife and daughter, it was across from the B&O Station. I used to babysit his daughter and as payment he would take me to watch his live radio show and on Sundays to the radio park. I was also present the evening his wife took their daughter and left him. I often wonder what happened to the wife and daughter as I never heard of them again. The last time I saw Bill was at an appearnce in Schenectady NY while I was a Police Officer there and he came out to visit me. We only spent a few minutes chatting because he had a show to do. As a recent visitor of this web-site I deeply enjoy it and it brings back fond childhood memories. JOHN KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ON THE SITE!!!

I was moved when I saw a outside Alter in the Farm Lands of NJ dedicated to Him. The faith of so many that believe in His unselfish acts of love and the Healings attributed to him is remarkable. For those of us that Believe in Spiritual Intervention in all matters it is a gift.

Hi Harvey, you know how some really believe that their are no 'coindence' right well, I heard some upsetting news tonite about how sick my brother Joey has been from the chemo treatments and that new cancer is showing up, so I couldn't sleep, worrying thinking and praying. I decided to get on the computer to try and get my mind off of it for awhile,'cos I can't sleep. Anyways the coindence for me kinda is I see all these postings about this Saint Padre Pio, whom I almost feel embarrased to say I don't ever remember hearing about him until, when Joey came home from the hospital I noticed he has been wearing a medal every day pinned to his shirt and I ask who's that , he tells me St. Padre Pio , that was the first I ever heard of him. I somewhat believe in miracles and hope one will happen for him,I like what Caroline posted about the statue of him and what it says at the bottom, I got the hope, and prayer down, just wish I could get the 'don't worry' down. Thanks for the stories and the link and info on the book on this Saint,I got some good research to do.

Absolutely beautiful Padre Pio shrine off of old Route 100 in Barto, PA. Vera Calandra, who visited Padre Pio with her very sick child, donated property to establish this shrine. The child improved after the visit. The only shrine in North America authorized by the Capuchin Friars

I am reading and very interested in your stories regarding Padre Pio. I believe this story was featured on TV - either "Unsolved Mysteries" or "Its a Miracle", a show of that type. I know it was a PA boy because of the locale mentioned and the PA accent of the mother who was interviewed. (I know you don't realize it, but there is a distinct "accent" of people from our home town and surrounding areas - and I have not completely lost mine.) Anyhow, I've seen this a few times and it is a nationally-known phenomenum.

This true story should prove to us that God exists, his guardian angels are at work 24/7 and miracles do, INDEED, happen. I've had them happen in my life - and prayers work.

Thank you to Helen and John...I went to The Word today and found a book called "Padre Pio - The True Story." It has a few pages about the miracle. He was Paul Walsh from Ridley Park. He was a senior at St. James. He lost control of his car on an icy road at 10:30 at night on Dec 2, 1983. He smashed into a telephone pole at high speed and was taken to Taylor Hospital. He had serious head injuries and multiple bone fractures in his face. He was transferred to CCMC. I won't try to describe all the problems he had but at one point his parents were advised that he had suffered permanent brain damage and they should look for a nursing home for him. Twice someone brought a glove that had been worn by Padre Pio to Paul and prayed for him. The second visit was on April 6th and when his parents came to see him the next day he was awake and alert and he began to improve. When his parents came on Easter Sunday (April 22nd) Paul told them that Uncle Charley had been there to see him early that morning. To make a long story short Mrs. Walsh knew there was no way Uncle Charley could have been there that morning and when she showed him a photo of Padre Pio and asked him if that's who had visited him he said, "Yes, Isn't that Uncle Charley?" Paul finished high school and graduated from Delaware Co Community College. Padre Pio is now St Pio of Pietrelcina.

I don't post much on the site but read it every day. Just wanted to tell ever one I'm going to Chester tomorrow for a family reunion. Actually it's in Brookhaven, but I will go through Chester because I still go the old way from NJ over the Commodore Barry Bridge. After all this hoagie talk I really have to bring some back with me. But the best part of my trip is that I'm meeting up with a friend I graduated with from Smedley in 1952 we have not seen each other since then. And of coarse I meet up with her through this site. Thank you John. My name was Betty Embert her name was Shirley Robinson

I too am sorry to hear about Linville Orchard. I remember it vaguely, but I remember it.

More olde England trivia:

If you had money, your plates were made out of pewter. Food with a high acid content would cause some of the lead to leach[sic] out from the pewter into the food. This was a real problem with tomatoes, so they stopped eating them for 400 years.

Most people didn't have pewter plates. They used trenchers which was a piece of wood with the middle scopped out like a bowl. They never washed their boards and a lot of times, worms would get into the wood. After eating off the trencher with worms, they would get "trench mouth.

Bread was divided according to status. The workers would get the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family would get the middle and guests would get the top, or the "upper crust".

But when the hoagies arrived, no one knew or cared which part of the bread they were eating (except for the wee ones) because it all went together so well.

Oh, I've been forgetting to mention that the hoagies were imported from Italy, and only once a year. They smelled a little "fishy" when they arrived, but no one cared.

And I kind of remember going to the new building a few times when they had the bus. Then it stopped coming and I didn't have a ride there so I stopped going.

Thank you Harvey. I had a few people from up in the area write me (via email) and said the barn is burned to the ground. The orchard is fine. No word on loss of life for either humans or the animals. That is a huge loss to the community. I think kids still went out to Linvilla on halloween. My Dad always took me there and we'd get hot cider, look at the animals, pick out a Christmas tree. It's sad.

Are all those animals Ok...anyone hurt? There isn't anything in the Delco Times yet - I just checked.

Padre Pio's Shrine: In route to Mays Landing thru Rt 40 east just before coming to Landisville (approx. 20 miles after Rt. 55) in New Jersey, a beautiful shrine to this new Saint has been built in the farm lands. Plain, beautiful, a outside church where the air is filled with song..A place of such peace in this busy world..A outside church where the sunrise kisses your cheeks, where anyone can stop and have a moment to reflect on the gift the people that believe in his miricles have given the traveler, the farm hands and people of this area...What I took home with me was a message, one of many left at the feet of the Saints Statue. It read..HOPE, PRAY, DON'T WORRY.....words to help one get thru...

For Harvey Martin. A young boy from St. Madeline's Parish was severely injured in an auto accident and recovered through the intercession of St. Padre Pio. I went to his shrine near Allentown and this miracle is outlined in books and pamphlets sold in their gift shop. I had a book which I purchased there but can't locate it.

Oh my gosh at 1 a.m.!!! I thought I had to be home by 10, maybe 11, after the St. James dance. Then that means, I was still awake at 1 a.m., with visions of sugar plums dancing in my head after the final playing of "Goodnight Sweetheart". Thank you for that information. After 50 plus years, some things escape my memory, especially when it comes to time, which was not all that important in those days.

When I was typing that bit about the pot that sat filled for days on end, it brought to mind something that was brought up during our quiz about Mrs. Murphy and the overalls in her chowder. As it turned out, it was Mrs. Murphy who had "left" them there. Do you suppose they used the same pot to wash clothes and cook in too? Anyone know? If so, no wonder there were so many epidemics.

I remember going to a church on the east side. It was between Edgemont Ave and Providence Rd. It was called Chester Baptist Temple. The Pastor was a Rev. Winters and his wife. This was back in the early 60's. I remember they took us to a camp Maranatha. I don't remember where it was. Did anyone ever hear of it and where is it at? I remember it because some kid was throwing darts and hit me in the side of the head. They said I was lucky because it was about a 1/2 inch from my temple.

Incidently, you probably already know, but Dean's real last name was "Crochetti".

OK - here's more olde England trivia:

When you entered the house, you would notice most times that the floor was dirt. (I remember dirt floors in old Chester.) Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. That's where the saying "dirt poor" came from. The wealthy would have slate floors. That was fine, but in the winter they would get slipperty when wet. So, they started to spread thresh on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they would just keep adding it and adding it until when you opened the door, it would start slipping outside. So, they put a piece of wood at the entry way, a "thresh hold".

In the kitchen, they had a big kettle that always hung over the fire and every day they would light the fire and start adding things to the pot. Mostly, they ate vegetables, because they didn't get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, then leave the leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day.

Sometimes, the stew would have food in it that had been in there for a month! Thus, the rhyme: peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot, nine days old."

Sometimes they could get ahold of some pork. They really felt special when that happened and when company came over, they even had a rack in the parlor where they would bring out some bacon and hang it to show it off. That was a sign of wealth and that a man "could really bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and they would all sit around and "chew the fat."

(I remember seeing a movie a few years ago about a town in Scotland or England - not sure - where food was scarce and a family stole a prize pig, not only for food, but to gain the admiration of all for having a pig. Needless to say the pig caused havoc in the house and the culprits were brought to justice.)

Hoagies took second place to pork in those days.

TO; JOAN M. - THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for clarifying the wives and children of Mr. Martin. I thought there were 5 children by his first wife; but I was darn sure that the son who died was from his second marriage. You have cleared up that part of the story for me; however, does anyone know what happened to Elizabeth Ann and why she is never acknowledged as the mother of his first 4 children? It is always implied in a subtle way that Jeanne is the mother of all seven. This is what has always bothered me and apparently has been hushed up for some unknown reason. The absence of ever mentioning her is louder than if she had been mentioned. And, I don't think it was the media or his press agent, I think it was Dean's decision or desire to omit her completely from his life. But, how can you do that when you share children with someone?

Thanks again Joan.

Dean Martin was married three times,

first to wife Elizabeth Anne McDonald on October 2, 1941. The couple had four children: Stephen (Craig), born June 29, 1942; Claudia, born March 16, 1944; Barbara (Gail), born April 11, 1945; and Deana (Dina), born August 19, 1948.

He married second wife Jeanne Biegger on September 1, 1949 and had three children: Dino Paul Jr., born November 17, 1951; Ricci James, born September 20, 1953; and Gina Caroline, born December 20, 1956.

In 1973, Martin married third wife Catherine Mae Hawn, and adopted a daughter Sasha. Their marriage ended in 1976.

Martin suffered a tragic loss when his son, Dino Jr., was killed in a plane crash during a military training exercise in 1987. He retired from show business after a 1988-89 concert tour with fellow rat-packers Sammy Davis, Jr. and Frank Sinatra, which ended for Martin after he became ill and was replaced by Liza Minelli for the remainder of the tour. Martin died of acute respiratory failure in Beverly Hills on December 25, 1995.

Paul: Pat's at 9th and Federal, boy that is a place, 24 hrs around the clock. They put that melted cheese on your steak in Philly..the orange stuff or is that yellow..maybe its cheese wiz..my first one there in 1959. Some jerk told me to put that red sauce on it. I did plus the hot peppers..bit into it and smoke and flame poured from between my lips. They have a good Cherry soda tho. People from Philly love that type of steak..Theres a certain way to eat them. if in town and getting a taste for one I prefer Geno's across the street. Plus they sell fresh roasted pork sandwiches..

you know whats changed though, the soft pretzels..the old texture is gone..like so many of the good things I never appreciated when I was young.

I agree Chester is the "home" of the hoagie. I worked in South Jersey awhile. A girl would buy sandwiches from the Northeast's "best" hoagie shop on Fridays. The whole office ate them. I tried it once and never ate another. Also, after Flyers games my South Jersey friends would crave Pat's Cheesesteaks. I ate a few but later just ordered a soda and watched them eat that dog meat. On weekends I'd go back to Chester for a hoagie or cheesesteak.

I liked Dean Martin also and Perry Como. Their are so many I can't think of them all. I liked a lot of orchestra's and pianists and Paul Whiteman. One of my favorites written by Jerome Kern is Rhapsody in Blue. I could go on and on. How many wonderful singers and groups. I raised 4 teenagers and each one had their own type of music they liked. I was brainwashed on it all.

Kate - another surprise - I was never a Tony Bennett fan either, nor his counterpart - Frankie Laine, i.e., "Mule Train - there's a muddy road ahead - hit 'em high, hit 'em low - mule train". Hard to get romantic listening to that. There was a fella by the name of Larry Darnell who sang "Three Letters" that I really liked while in high school. Never knew what became of him. But, Buddy Greco had a 1/2 hour TV show out of Phila. that I rushed home to watch after school - in the late 40's. He was the piano player and vocalist with a trio then and apparently was just starting out. Still like Buddy today.

I almost forgot about the next shocking facts in old England - got carried away thinking about Dino - which incidentally was my first husband's last name. Now, back to our illustrous ancesters.

Their houses were covered with thatch roofs - thick straw, piled high, with no wood underneath. The roof was the only place for little animals to get warm. So, all the dogs, cats and other small animals, mice, rats, bugs, lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery so sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Thus, the saying, "It's raining cats and dogs." TRUE (Oh, what a mess - watch out, here comes another one!!)

This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings from animals in the roof could really mess up your nice clean bed, so they made beds with big posts and hung a sheet over the top to catch the falling buggers. That's where those beautiful big 4-poster beds with canopies came from. TRUE (How absolutely lovely - from chaos came charm.)

When it was time to enjoy their hoagies in February, everyone ate outside, so as to avoid the falling critters - rain, snow or fair weather - nothing could prevent their enjoyment of a hoagie. FALSE.

Kate and +++ - Surprise - I never was a Sinatra fan, and it was not Dean's "voice" I was mad about, it was his charm, demeanor and extremely good looks (especially after his nose job). And, I understand that the "easy-going" ways he exhibited in front of the camera, were his true personality. He was the peace maker in the clan. OH, OH, WHAT A GUY!!!

And, Mario Lanza - oh, how wonderful I thought he was. He was born in the same timeframe I was in Phila. and I clearly remember the Italian boys in town trying to imitate Lanza. If they saw someone walking down the street and thought she was pretty, they would just get down on their knees (in the middle of the sidewalk, anywhere) and sing as loud as they could - "Be My Love." Oh, how cute they were.

My favorite pop singers however are Joe Williams (now deceased - sang with Count Basie), Jack Jones and Steve Lawrence.

In the meantime, what's the story on Dean's first wife? What happened to her?

Jerry Lewis' wife was Pat/Patsy.

Kate: Pat preferred Dean Martin...I preferred Dean Martin also (I am not Pat)...Just a matter of vocal choice...I loved Franks young voice, but not his older more mature. I referred to Dean as a preference, not as any competition to Frank S. as there were none. Frank S. has always been a great crooner...I remember seeing him in Atlantic City in the 1940's at a little club off the main drag..I was there on vacation as a kid and we stood at what I guess was the back door and listened. ..Some people like Mario Lanza over Caruso. Its just a matter of taste. Like the Hoagie and the cheese steak..which taste better.

There was a Catholic Church in AC where the Priest of the time had loud speakers set outside (think just off Atlantic and the Boardwalk) because the crowds grew so large that he wanted all to be accomodated..Many of the entertainers would be outside on the boards listening to Fathers message..So of course everyone became Catholic on Sunday just to see who came to listen. I still prefer Dean..and Lanza...

Patricia: Regarding Dean M's. son that was killed in the air crash (he was assigned if memory serves me well at Willow Grove Air Base in PA) was the oldest child of Dean M.. My memory keeps trying to tell me that the true name of his first wife was Patsy (don't know if that is so) I do remember bumping into the sons (Dino ?) aunt shortly after he died. The death of anyone so young is a heartbreak to the family.

I to think his voice was one of the Best. Have many if not all of his recordings. Still do. Pack rat that I am. In fact I preferred his voice over Ole Blue Eyes...His tone did not change over the years. The quality was such that he did not have to have a Phantom backup voice like so many others.

To: +++ - Dean and his first wife had 5 children; and I'm almost positive the son who died in the airplane crash was from Jean, his second wife. If you ever look at his picture, his looks are a combination of Dean and Jean - her blond hair and blue eyes. I remember thinking, what a tragedy - his and Jean's first child. I have seen some of Dean's children from his first marriage, and they were all dark-haired. Jean was a former Copa girl - that's where they met - at the Copacobana in NY in the early 50's.

However, what happened to our local girl? He was from Ohio and she from PA. It would be interesting to know where and how they met. They must have been very young and then very quickly had 5 children. Because it wasn't too long after Dean and Jerry made it big that he married Jean. So, he couldn't have been a star when he met our local girl.

This is probably boring to a lot of people, but I have always been curious about it. Yes, I adored Dean Martin.

Dean Martins first wife was from Morton, his oldest son that died was from the first wife. I have forgotten how many children she had with Dean. I believe her sister Barbara is still living in the area. Lovely gal Barbara. Worked at Boeing.

To: FC - That's sounds logical too, and where did they store the dead bodies until burial time? My goodness. Imagine going to visit the dear departed - oh my. I am only giving you information that I came across that's supposed to be legitimate. But, it's not mentioned anywhere about how they handled the deceased. Remember, my "facts" concern the 1500's - which is a VERY long time ago. Well, one question always leads to another, doesn't it?

To Pat McF(CHS)50 There was something on TV about why more people get married in June. It seems a very long, long, long time ago when it was a lot colder and people died, the ground was so frozen, all burials were put off until May when the ground thawed out. When spring came around nobody wanted to get married in May, so June became the favorite time to get hitched. FC

I have a question. Not too long ago, someone posted the fact that Dean Martin's first wife was from the Chester area - a McDonald. I have always known he was married before Jean and had five children by that first wife. Every time I read an article (just read one on Saturday) it implies that Jean is the mother of all 8 children; i.e., Dean and Jean and their 8 children. It always gives the impression that Jean is the mother of all 8. The first wife is NEVER mentioned as mother to the first five. I feel this is very cruel. Dean and Jean were married in approx. 1954-55.

Does anyone know what happened to the first wife? If she passed away, that would explain it; but I never heard of her death.

I see by the Delco times that you might be getting a race track on the old Sun Ship Bldg. site. That should be exciting and generate many jobs. I hope so.

Here's more trivia from Old England in the 1500's. No sense trying to tease you, all this is true (except for the hoagies in the first one). So, it's more or less "Believe it or Not" - but TRUE. Wait, you will be shocked.

Most people got married in June. Why? They took their yearly bath in May, so they were still smelling pretty good by June, although the brides would carry a bouquet of flowers to hide their developing b.o. TRUE!!!

The yearly bath in May was just a huge tub filled with hot water. The man of the house would get the privilege of the nice clean water. Then, all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all, the babies. By then, the water was pretty thick. Thus, the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water" - it was so dirty, you could actually lose someone in it. TRUE!!!

When the hoagie finally arrived in late February from the local open-air markets, the men started at one end, followed by the servants, then the women, and the wee ones were left with but a crust of bread. Thus the saying, "The bread is the best part of the hoagie." FALSE!

Stay watching, more to come. It gets even better (or worse) depending on how you look at it.

I started going to Stackey's in the early '50s when they were across the street from the Moyamensing Fire Co., right at the corner of a little alley. It was quite a small shop in those days, but even then, it was worth the trip from Media. After they moved across the street, there was more room to move around in, but the food remained the same high quality. People who now make hoagies at places like Wawa ought to visit Stackey's to find out to make eight or ten hoagies at the same time, and how to slice those tomatoes and onions with such a deft moton of the knife. When our gang used to arrive from Media, the guys behind the counter would call out, "Hey Media!" I haven't been back there is 20 or more years, but I'll bet if we walked in today, they would still yell, "Hey Media." My brother, Leedom B. Morrison, worked for 16 years as planning director of Chester to try to restore the life of that grand old town. I'm afraid he had only limited success before he finally gave up and went to work for the Delaware County Planning Commission. He died six years ago this Thanksgiving. His obit is on the Old Chester Web. Third Street in the old days was predominantly Italian. We used to drink in the Franklin Hotel on the corner above Stackey's. It was a dump then. I don't know what it must be like now. But we put away a lot of beer there. Before we all got cars, we used to ride the bus to Chester, buy a hoagie, go to some secluded spot and eat it, then hop the bus back home. Kids nowadays just don't have that kind of fun. I grew up around the corner from Earro's Bakery when it was located on Palmer Street and have never found rolls that were as good. The smell of the fresh-baked rolls permeated the neighborhood and my mother used to give me a nickel to buy a large roll as it came out of the oven. It was the best snack you could get. I also used to go there to get a ball of dough (free) to use as bait when I went fishing in Chester Creek in Chester Park. The catfish and carp loved that dough and I always caught a few with it. I sure wish I could find a place that had rolls like Earro's did.

Caroline,

Thank you for clearing that up for Patricia. I have to admit that I've been very close to Joe and Augie DiCostanza for about 26 years. I know that one of them is at the shop when it's open. Now that Joe is up in his 70's he's not at the shop for very long. Augie handles the major hours and if a hoagie got out of his door in the shape 'no name' states, it was wrapped in haste by mistake. Augie would appreciate having it back and then feed your family for the error. I guess it struck kind of close to home when you hear 'family' being publicly humiliated when you know they are kind and generous people. Ok, Patricia, you must have in mind Habberset scrapple; I think that was the best. Caroline, do you remember 'John's Doggies" down the street from the Newsstand? They were good dogs, and cheap. Till later, goodnight.

Thought you might be interested in some trivia regarding our English ancesters. Very possibly some of these odd ways were still practiced when they landed in Chester.

Life in the 1500's was not as romantic as we may picture it. Here are some examples.

Anne Hathaway, wife of William Shakespeare, married at the "old age" of 26. Most people in the 1500's married young, the age of 11 or 12. Her childhood home was a 3-bedroom house with a small, seldom-used parlor, kitchen, and no bathroom. Mother and Father shared a bedroom. Anne had a queen-sized bed, shared with 3 other sisters and 6 servant girls. They didn't sleep like we do - lengthwise, but rather all laid on the bed crosswise. TRUE or FALSE?

The other bedroom was shared by her 6 brothers and 30 field workers. They didn't have a bed. Everyone just wrapped up in their blanket and slept on the floor. They had no indoor heating, so all the extra bodies kept them warm. TRUE or FALSE?

Mutton was not their favorite food - hoagies were. TRUE or FALSE?

Again, I say to the person who bought the off-beat hoagie from D'Constanza's - you have made it sound like it was a one-time occurrence.

Any proprietor with the reputation that apparently this establishment has, practically insists that they be made aware of something like this. By not calling them at least immediately, you did them an injustice. By complaining about them as you did on a public forum like this doubled the injustice.

No employer has complete control over what every employee does every minute, and the person who fixed that "hoagie" might have been angry about something and ready to "walk out the door" and that was his/her revenge.

Next time, do the right thing and let them know. I would bet they would be more than happy to have you and your friends as their guests, maybe not once, but twice. Read what the other post said about Wawa's mailing them a coupon.

I think D'Costanza's has more class than that, don't you? Call them anyway - better late than never.

I understand the hoagie experiance completly. When I first moved to Ohio I could not find a decent hoagie anywhere. It took about 3 years to find a sub shop that was even close to the hoagie's I used to get when I lived out east. the only decent sub in the whole state of Ohio is from Jersey Mike's. They blow subway, blimpe and all other chain sub shops away. Still not a hoagie like the one's my father gets me when I visit home. He gose to a place called Stackies, i've never been there but I love them hoagie's.Wish we had something similar here in Ohio.

All this talk about hoagies.... And the general consensus is and I am a firm beleiver that if you ever had a hoagie from Chester, in the old days, nothing else compares. I've tried them all wawa (yuk), blimpie (yuk), subway (yuk) and so on. I had a wawa hoagie about 2 years ago and I renamed it the lettuce sandwich. I even emailed wawa and told them that if they really wanted to learn how to make a hoagie they should setup training with the guys from LaSpada's, Phil&Jim's, or DiCostanza's. I also told them that I would never buy another one from any of thier stores and they they should stop calling them hoagies. Know what they reply " Sorry for your bad experience" Then they had the audacity to email me a coupon for a free hoagie. LOL I replied no thanks and deleted the email. The Best Hoagies are still made at the ORIGINAL hoagie shops from Chester...

All I can say is wish you could of been here with us when we came home from the store and opened up the sandwich, then you could see for yourself, there were not one tomatoe, no pickles, no onions, no lettuce, no oil, only meat and cheese and 2 hot peppers wrapped in some paper on the side, now why would someone make that up c'mon, yea I remember when they used to make a good sandwich, there are way to many good places still around to get a good sandwich to go back ot D'Consstanza's in Linwood. Good Grief - when people do not post their name, or even a number, to identify who to respond to, how are we suppose to respond to the right person. Never-ending problems with "no names."

It reminds me of the movie "Member of the Wedding" with Ethel Waters and Julie Harris - one of my all-time favorite movies. Julie, in her adolescent confusion, wanted to change her name and thought everyone should change their name if they didn't like their own name. Ethel, in her wisdom, said, "Landsakes Child, if everyone changed their name, nobody would know who anyone was talking about." That's what the problem here is. Landsakes, at least give yourself a number.

Sorry Robert.

It did make for conversation in the most enjoyable way...and If the person with the dry hoagie had not posted, we would not have known Robert was checking in at the NEWSSTAND. HI ROBERT...How about some more memories...thats what the NEWSSTAND is about..

Because of that post we learned about the history of the hoagie from Chester to Philly..

If memory serves me right at one time way back when there was a territory dispute about that history history...Who did the first hoagie really belong to...Chester or Philly or was it a couple of Chester shops claiming the fame.

Now, now folks. You haven't tasted anything until you've had a "Blimpie". Right here in Phoenix, Arizona, where they haven't the foggiest idea of what an authentic hoagie is. However, some joker saw one or had one at one time, didn't know the name of it and decided it should be called what it looked liked - a "blimpie" or a "submarine".

Now the submarine he created is just that - it submerges slowly with lots of bubbles, leaves an extension of some sort before it disappears, and surfaces when you least expect it. Then when it is clearly out of sight, well, it wouldn't be in "good taste" to explain that here. However, if you put enough vinegar and oil on it, as I do, it brings make memories of what might have been.

In the meantime, will somebody please send me a hoagie from D'Costanza's, Stackey's or Alices's Restaurant, wherever? You are driving my taste buds wild. In the meantime, we do have Tastycakes out here - but no scrapple. My niece who was born here in Arizona, while helping me move, saw Tastycakes in my boxes. She really screamed, "Where did you find Tastycakes". She only spent a short 2 years back there, working in Atlantic City at one of the casinos, and because she was exposed to our good food, she never forgot. As no one does.

Robert - From what you have said I get the feeling your experience MIGHT have been a one-time thing. If so, you should have called them immediately. I'm sure you would have probably received ten times free what you didn't receive the first time. Sounds like the guy behind the counter wanted to change the routine. Happens to us all.

In the meantime, I humbly beg for a hoagie or scrapple.

When that happens I'll pay for it. As far as WaWa is concerned, they can make a pretty fair sandwich. That's all it is, not a hoagie. That allows places such as Subway and Zero's into the picture and they use pre-cut meat and bologna. I think a criteria is established and a good Italian hoagie has its "roots" too. Just my opinion, enjoy your hoagie(?)too

Robert,

I think each of us that enjoy the Hoagie has a favorite place where they are made. You started with DiCostanza's when they were still on 3rd street. The best of the best, so did I. Both Johnny and his brother knew how to make a great hoagie but they had first generation as hoagie making instructors. I also bought them at Buddy's down around Dewey School on 3rd street. Depending on who makes the hoagie, it can be a little dry regardless of where you buy at times (some rolls absorb the oil more than others, often those that prepare it think they put enough oil on). I have found that I now ask for extra oil at many places.

Today People swear by the WAWA hoagie--always fresh-- Its just a matter of taste.

they all taste good if its your favorite place to buy, especially if your not suppose to eat them anymore....you know that cholesterol stuff.

To each his/her own ENJOY your Hoagie.

I just started reading the News Stand and it's interesting to see people sharing memories. As for the nameless person who wrote: "open the hoagie, guess what we get, a large hoagie with only the meat and cheese, nothing else but meat and cheese and 2 hot peppers wrapped in some sandwich paper, it was the driest hoagie I ever had," I challenge your honesty on that remark. I've been going to DiCostanza's for 35 years and I'm always full and content with a delicious hoagie, and looking forward to another. By the way, Augie is Little Joe's son, not nephew. And you can order a next day hoagie by mail from DiCostanza's weeb site or by calling the shop, but be warned, the shipping for overnight perishable goods is expensive. It's best if you get a large order to help defray the cost. My buddy in Fla. had 15 Italian Specials sent down for a work-lunch-thing and the shipping cost was split up and more acceptable to his co-workers. Just some food for thought. http://www.dicostanzas.com

Well, here's another view of the "hoagie history", but it dates back to 1925.

http://www.dicostanzas.com/About.asp

My opinion is you can't get a better hoagie than DiCostanza's. Real Italian meats are used, and the vegies are bought at the Italian market in Philly. How many other places slice the tomato over top of the hoagie, that's fresh. The peppers are cooked on site just like grandmom used to do. There is no lettuce "filler". For 77 years there hasn't been a compromise on quality, that says alot about a business to me.

Well Michelle, it certainly is a small world and this oldchester.pa site makes it grow even smaller. So your dad owned and operated a successful bistro - glad to hear it. I didn't know any McCarthy families back home except for Jean McCarthy who was a schoolmate at CHS. I knew the Mangan family whose mother, Loretta, was formerly a McCarthy - is there a connection there? The reference to "Kerr" in your first post was also interesting.

Also Richie is referring to Pat Bratton and Pat McMahon - both of whom were classmates at CHS. Well, at least he got his Pat's right.

Your dad really was not only a handsome fellow but very charming and well liked, and it appears he raised a daughter with as much charm.

Tell me how to obtain a copy of that St. James choir disc and I will order one, because I would like to hear it.

Thank you Michelle for being so gracious and if your dad and mom get on the board, I would love to say "hello".

Hey Pat, I am sorry that I left out your question about Richard Mc Gonigal. That handsome guy is my Dad, I just hung up the phone from him and he told me that he use to dance with you a St. Michael's. He also mentioned a Patsy Braton and Pat McMourn (sp). My dad is doing great and is still as handsome as ever!! He is a member of the Blue and Gray Voices, that is the St. James all male Choir. If you ever get the opportunity to hear them sing I am sure you would Love it. They just made a Christmas CD so maybe you could have one sent to you. It is funny that you mentioned my hair being Red/Blonde, because it is. My dad married a Beautiful Red head named Mary Mc Carthy from Chester, she went to Chester High. Well, it certainly is a small world and I enjoy getting the scoop on who my Dad was dancing with!! My parents will be back online soon so maybe you two can say hello.

Well I did read many years ago that the bread was indeed the deciding factor in the best hoagie. I could be wrong but I think it mentioned the type of water that was used in the process. That's why I can have the best and original receipes available, but where do I get the bread. Because in the old-fashioned hoagies the bread was not an overwhelming feature, it blended right in with the rest of the ingredients.

With a hamburger, for instance, when I'm half-way through it, I will sometimes remove the top layer, because it's just too much "bread" and not that tasty either.

Just my humble opinion.

Harvey is correct about the most important ingredient of the hoagie--the bread. At least until 1965 when I left Chester, Bunos(sp)Bakery supplied most of the popular shops. The bread was always crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, with a split on top. Since there were no preservatives added, the bread was only fresh for a day and most shops got several orders a day. The bread we get today regardless of where we are is made w/preservatives to last. They are flat (easier to cut) and soft the outside( easier to bite). None of these breads should be called Italian bread. Now someone tell me where to get a hoagie like we used to get at Stackey's, Mike's, or D'Costanza's

As far as the hoagie goes, I now live in Newark,DE and you cannot get a good hoagie around here. I stop on Friday nights at Carmira's on Chichester Ave. They make a great hoagie there. My favorite still is Phill & Jim's. When I can I stop there. I don't go there often because it takes so long to get home.

Long live Chester, PA.

To Michele Krolick. Are you referring to Betty Kerr, brother Jack, mother Grace, father and older brother both by the name of Bill, I believe?

Betty Kerr married Joe Briare after she moved to Arizona in approx. 1948. If it is the same Betty Kerr, she had 3 daughters and one son - as I recall. She and I were close classmates at Rez and Notre Dame and kept in touch after she moved to Phoenix due to her dad's health. Grace, her mother (now deceased), was one of the sweetest and dearest people I have ever known. All in this family are now deceased except Betty, if we are talking about the same person. Believe she still resides in Arizona in perhaps Chino Valley?

Regarding Richard McGonigle - was he a '48 or '49 St. James graduate - very handsome dark-haired, not too tall fellow? Real charming smile with an Irish look about him? If so, I find very interesting what he did with his life and that the McGonigles and Kerrs are related and I would like to know how, because of the Kerr family moving to Phoenix.

Please respond Michele, because it's your generation this site looks forward to and it's so nice to know you not only enjoy but contribute. Email John Bullock at his website and he will make the decision about where to post your articles (which I would love to see) and let us know where we can find them. Jack Kerr would be the right age to serve in the Korean conflict. I have a feeling we're talking about the same family and I would like to know whose daughter you are. If there's a direct Kerr/Briare connection, then you must be red/blonde hair with freckles. Welcome aboard.

Hello, Great Site of the Good Old Days of Chester that I so frequently hear about from my parents. I was told of this site by my Dear Friend Tracy and My Lovely Aunt Betty Kerr. My Grandfater is the Late "Billy Ritchie" Richard Mc Gonigal of Chester PA. He owned and operated Billy Richies Hotel and Bar on Chester Pike in Leiperville, wich he purchased from Baron Dougherty in October of 1954. He also owned the bar on Morton Ave. in Chester. I have a newpaper article of the write up that was printed in the Chester Times dated Nov. 4,1954 If you would be interested in the picture of the hotel or the article I would love to send it. It does make me sad that the building burned down and is no longer there for me or anyone to see. I am sure many of you out there have places of Chester that were near and dear to your hearts and now all you have are the memories because the building are gone.

I also have an Uncle that is pictured on this site, Jack Kerr. He is one of the Sailors pictured in the Veterans section Korean War.

Thaks for the Memories Michele McGonigal Krolick

Now, see - ain't that nice? Everything's sweet, everything's fine - and all is well in old Chester and surrounding areas - including the rest of the good ole USA - thank our dear and patient Lord.

There was an article in our daily paper today regarding a "war on spam". I am of the opinion that only our prayers (I think God approves of this new technology) will give the needed wisdom to those individuals gifted with such scientific knowledge to rid us of this destructive "worm" - much like the serpent in the Garden of Eden. We are entering a new world with this technology and I would imagine that the serpent, as always, has to make his presence known. His jealous nature dictates that he do so.

Now, let the games begin!!

Maybe Toms provider deemed it spam since it came from the family.com site. I also have a spam blocker on my computer and a zone alarm and a virus alarm...so I understand why when he saw spam that he questioned.

Tom, I received the same email from Caroline (yes, the one who always posts here) except it did not have the first line about "spam". etc. I'm sure Caroline will clarify this when she gets back on the board.

However, the address of the sender is MyFamily.com which is a legitimate site (and legitimate for Caroline to send from that site) that you apparently have joined. Caroline is just telling us about our "profile" area there where we can post our personal photo and facts about ourselves. Her opening line to me was that she was sending this to everyone and it's just likely that your receiving end includes all that additional information. I don't think it's harmful in any way, not at all. Caroline will respond, I am sure, shortly.

In my last post, I should have said that the word "golf" IS an acronym, not "originally was". Sorry.

Mike: Many places don't use lettuce. The recipes that you see are homemade and the veg. are of the persons own choice. Mike and Emmas doesn't put lettuce on either. The Duke of Earls makes a great old fashion one. There are various types of hoagies. You can get a good Turkey hoagie on RT 13 in New Castle DE at the Dog House and a 3 cheese hoagie next to the Pike Deli in Ridley Park...One hoagie I like which is not a traditional is the Roast Beef Hoagie. All roast beef and Provolone cheese with the dressings. Then for some its the pepperoni hoagie. (that one I could never get a fancy for) and the chicken salad hoagie or the tuna hoagie. theres even a catfish hoagie..(sounds sick doesn't it)

The best hoagies in chester could have come from DiCostanza's on 3rd street. Didn't Mrs. DiConstanza invent the hoagie when some hungrey card players came in and smelled her making the roasted peppers and wanted them on a sandwich she threw together for them. Then there is LeSpada's aslo said to have invented the sandwich. And Stackies...great steaks. I see Sonny May is building a water Ice stand just down the street from Stackies, same side across from the old place of business.

So who really did invent he Hoagie...I like the following article. Nice people

Jack..Rez51: Heres how we make them in our house. We are within a drive to Philly so are able to get the best of Italian meats and cheese.

A total of about 3oz of meat and cheese per hoagie. (individual Hoagies)

meats/cheese: Dry Salome, Prosciutto, Capocolla, and Provolone.

Veg. : lettuce, onion, tomato, sweat peppers (jar type) hot peppers (jar) roasted peppers where available. pickles.

salt, pepper and oregano to taste

3 blend oil...if that’s not available try mixing veg. oil with olive oil.

take your roll, put the oil on, (some like extra oil) add the veg. you like, season with the S/P/O. place your meats and cheese on top...enjoy.

some of us put the meats/cheese on the bottom and the veg. in the center of the meat.

If Italian meats are not available where you live, get Boiled Ham or Italian Ham at the market and Genoa Salome..American cheese can be used in a pinch.

hoagie

1 roll, chopped lettuce, sliced tomatoes, chopped onions, hot peppers, pickle slices, sprinkle of olive oil and oregano, few slices of ham, few slices of provolone, few slices of salami, few slices of capicol, hot or sweet. Layer the lunch meats on top of the vegetables. Some people prefer mayonaise. We make our own often.

For Judges , how about Judge MacDade.

What are the ingredients in a good old fashion Chester Hoagie? What kind of ham, cheese, other the meat and dressing? Peppers? Tomatos? Onions?

Found a place out here in Ohio that makes rolls that are close to the kind I remember. Plan to have a Hoagie party and need the fixins. Paul Newman's Italian Salad dressing comes close for the dressing.

None of the chain restaurants selling subs make the sandwich the way I remember them from Chester. I don't remember ever having a heated Hoagie in Chester.

Any help is apprciated.

I remember we used to swim at the falls at Chester Park. I also remember the spring at the other end. My cousin was sledding down the hill onto the frozen creek and the ice broke luckily we got him out he was freezing. We wrapped him in our coats and rushed home. I used to ride the merry go round in the park until I got sick. I still can't ride rides that spin to this day.

really none, just trying to generate some Chester area history..thought maybe there were others. Looks like most people are on vacation. Maybe someone else can add to the list, we have listed the doctors so why not the Judges. Evidently Chester did provide a basic education foundation that could carry people on to bigger and better things in life. The school system presently is a news item often.. Really no point, just an observation. Saw a picture of some old time judges and lawyers on the site which was food for the thought..

Caroline - Now that I see the picture, I do remember the Caterpiller - what fun that was. The photo of the inventor with only family members aboard is understandable - fear of the unknown. Now, what a "gentle" ride that would be.

Florence - it wouldn't have taken too large a person to have "squashed" you. You were so petite, and so was your nature. I see you are gaining more confidence in using your wit on this site and everyone adores you for it - I told you you were funny. I hope my encouragement gave you more confidence. You're a luv. Somehow, my humor is misunderstood, so I have "squashed" it - for now at least - but only on this site.

Where is Ed Gebhart? No columns lately, or have I overlooked something?

Caroline I remember the caterpilla very well. It was my favorite ride at one time. I can't ever remember going to Wildwood. The only beach's we went to were in Delaware. We used to meet all the family at Clemomton park for a get together long ago. In all our years, how many tunes have we heard, how much history have we been thru. I wonder how we got so old so fast. I see in Chester where they are building a Hall of Fame for sports. Great idea. Remember the Hit Parade. So many great singers.

The lovely lady that you saw rocking on her porch always had something in her hands doing. She may have been sitting there splitting peas, or peeling potaotos. She was never an ideal person. With a very large family and raising them by herself it was no easy task. Her day began very early and like so many others in that part of Chester ended very late. Her children were raised with a work ethic that is not the norm these days. Their father died early in some of their lives but all turned out well in a one parent family. The older children helping to care for the younger. They all worked hard for the family as was the way back then.

Thanks Caroline for your input. I don't think any beach area has had as many songs written about it as the NJ shore. I guess that's because all great artists came from the East Coast, then migrated to the West Coast - but it appears that tunes were inspired on the East Coast - when and where the artists were "Young at Heart".

I remember someone on Harwick Street behind the old church They used to rock on their rocking chairs for hours. I use to ride my bike around the school block and be amazed that they still rocked that much. I think they were related to someone who had a race car on 4th street. Jane? or something. The house next to them was always in trouble or didn't pay their bills and a gas station. Is this the same family?

Patricia: People are still doing what Pat Boone sang about during our time.."writing Love letters in the sand"..the only difference now is that it is growing in leaps and bounds with high priced housing. But here on the east coast housing is expensive anyway, it is a very desirable area to live. That Boardwalk pizza is still good and the french fries sprinkled with vinegar is only a summer treat. One ride that is missing is the caterpillar..Remember that one..

Well folks, the weekend is upon us and I have a suggestion. Those of you still living back home and are lucky enough to have access to the shore, why don't you post current news about the "happenings" there. I'm sure a lot of you go there for the weekend and let us who don't have that privilege know what's going on there. Although a few folks disagreed with me sometime ago about the shore being a part of Chester's history, I still feel that it is because a lot of people connected and re-connected there.

Share it with us.

To Pat: No that would not have been the same Louis he would only be around 50 as he and Patty as I remeber were not that far apart in years, maybe a couple.

To Mary: Yes the Lotus was definitely blue. I remember I was 15 at the time when Louis got killed. They had that car parked in front of the house for the longest time before they got rid of it. It was about 6 months after the funeral and I mustered up the nerve to ask Glen if he would sell it to me. I wasn't even 16 yet, but you know how a kids mine works. I really thought they would sell it to me real cheap like 2 thousand dollars. I know now that that was unrealistic to try to get at the time a 75 thousand dollar car for 2. But anyway Glen told me that he would not sell that car to me because it was to fast and I would get hurt in it. If you know what ever happened to them let me know. Thanks Tom

I remember the Phillips family on Edgmont Avenue. The father, Glen, worked with my father in my father's business for awhile which was painting lines on parking lots. The mother's name was Leigh. I remember Louis and his Lotus. It was blue, I think. I remember when he was killed in the car accident. Ironically, my sister was killed in a car accident around the same time. Her name was Jean Connors. She graduated Notre Dame in 1966 and was 20 at the time. I was only 12 then and I was wondering if anyone knew her. I don't remember too much about her.

Do businesses still do that for Graduates?? I don't think so. Have a great weekend. Some of my kids are coming over the Mountains for the weekend. I am looking for information about the Third and Norris Streets area circa 1940. Pictures and information about White's Funeral Home, and the adjacent row of apartments, local stores, the trolley line, and Immaculate Heart would be useful. I am writing a novel for children and would like to make my background as authentic as possible. I lived in the area as a child, but White's and the apts. are gone along with Tommy Reardon. I remember the Railway Express?? office on Third Street between Tilghman and Central. And the movie a few blocks west but not its name. I went to IH for first and second grade but moved away in '37. If there is a book(let) about the time and place given above, I'd like to see it as it may be of help. Thanks for any help you might offer.

You are right-their farm was on Faulk rd. I went there when Ritchie owned it in the 80's. His family & mine had many a party & good time there. They are the days I remember-not Billie Ritchie's Bar. I just thought I would mention the bar since it was a part of history.

Ritchie's daughter & I often talk about her grandfather. I also see Ritchie often at different functions & parties. He now lives down here in Middletown,DE with his family. He is doing great. I just told him about this website, he will be signing on soon.

TOM (CHS76) - Regarding Louis Phillips - I knew a Louis Phillips way back when and I am wondering if it is the same person. If he were still alive, would he be in his 70's? Did he have light, really curly/wavy hair and a broad face? The Louis Phillips I knew (but not real well) had a "touch of class" as I recall. Please reply.

Incidently, where is our reply from Tony Molla? Want to know if you are the Tony Molla I knew. If so, you were a real "fun-loving" guy - and your initial posts sounds that way.
