Anastos Candies & Fruits
933 Edgmont Ave.

Photo c. 1918

"I have a scan of an old photo taken circa 1918 of the original store. Not only that, but the front window was broken in the late 1940's and replaced. I have the glass and glass gold leaf letters that say "E G ANASTOS 933" that my Aunt Helen had in the basement. (Notice the basement access door in the sidewalk in the photo.) I also have two of "Pop's" original copper candy kettles, also from this basement.

Left to right:
Evangelos "Pop" Anastos (originally Anagnostakos, shortened by immigration),
(Aunt) Helen Anastos Bray,
(Uncle) George Anastos (man who gave the store info on website),
Emilia Anastos Kosteski (my mother)
"Grandmom" Emilia/Amelia Hetu Anastos,
and an unidentified friend.

Aunt Helen worked in Sportswear at Weinberg's for years. We would all meet at the Welsh Restaurant when she got off at 9:30 every Friday.

Apparently, this was a very popular place for the students from St. James H.S. and PMC to "hang out" in the 1940's. My Uncle Tony took his older brother Ed, my Dad, here to meet Emilia, my mother. Guess they liked each other!

Thanks to
Edward Kosteski
