To Corky. Thanks. To no name. Thanks. I lost my hard drive a few months ago and lost all my favorites. So I'm back on "Old Chester" now. I use to have a site where you could listen to oldies but can't remember what it was. Old age(LOL-LOL) I would be thankful if any one could give me the name of that site. To Lorraine. Shirley gave me your e-mail but it keeps on coming back as mail-error. Keep writing, no-name

Hi again folks, This message is for John the webmaster. Not really a big thing but the correct spelling of the last name of the owner's of Sadie's market on 10th and Harwick was Sarnocinski not Sierocinski or however it was spelled on the grocers list. Sarge Sarnocinski was the last proprietor and my Uncle by marriage. He was also a heck of a nice guy! Thanks.

Wow, I took a ride through the old stomping grounds (McCaffery Village). I was lost, a lot of the new houses are built. Streets are renamed and a lot of them are gone. Thought I was in another world until I drove into Buckman and saw all the delapidation. But, the monument still stands across from Lesyk's market.

Alfonso (fonzie) Latini,

I know where Smith St is because I lived on Huber when you lived on Smith.

I was in the CHS class of 56 so there is an age difference of 7 years between us.

Do you remember the DiCamillo's on Smith or the Bruton's on Huber? Both families had sons near your age.

Pete DiCamillo is about my age and he can still name the occupants of each house on both streets. Pete had older brothers but LuLu the only one I can remember. LuLu taught me to ride my bike when I was nine. LuLu was reported missing in action during the Korean war.

I keep track of Tom Bruton because our mothers were close friends. Tom was in the CHS class of 1955. Tom's older brother's name is Alfred and he would be nearer your age. Tom is living in Florida and the last I heard of Alfred he still lives in Marcus Hook.

Marylou---

Yes, I remember the "Pond" at the bottom of the park. It was at the bottom of the hill from 18th Street. It fell into disarray in the early 60's, but the stone wall is probably still there...???... It was adjacent the Spring Water Fountian made from stone that constantly ran. (Same as the one in Chester Park) People used to come from mile around to fill up their containers.

I remember it oh-so-well... I believe sometime in 1970 or so, it was turned off. This is before the College erected the Swartz Center at the other end of the Park, where it used to be "all woods" up to the creek. One could trek through those woods all the way back to White Mountians (as it was called...) I myself lived on Glen Terrace at the time, as a child that is... Washington Park was the Daily Activity for so many back then, you absolutely spent your whole summer day there at one end or the other. I recall a "Tarzan" swing at the creek just up from the wooden bridge that crossed over to the old Ranchero (Dirt Road) which brought you up to Bullens Lane.

WOW -- Back to reality........

Anyone else care to jumo on this memory wagon???

Basically had the old Chester experiences, played football for Rez, baseball at Chester Youth, sandwiches from Two J's, pizza from Vesuvio etc etc. I can even remember McGlone's and the old Honeysuckle for what its worth. I'm now living in Colby, Kansas and I'm the Director of Radiology at the local hospital here. Just wanted to say hi and for anyone who may remember me to drop me a line. Take Care Bill

She had a brother and a sister, named georgette. I like many is growing old and want to find out how she is doing all of these years since we last talked.

I want you to close your eyes.

Picture in your mind the soldier at Valley Forge holding his musket in his bloody hands. He stands barefoot in the snow, starved from lack of food, wounded from months of battle, and emotionally scarred from the eternity of being away from his family; surrounded by nothing but death and the carnage of war. Yet, he stands tough, with fire in his eyes and victory on his breath.

Picture him now as he looks at us in anger and disgust and tells us this:

I gave you a birthright of freedom born in the Constitution and now your children graduate too illiterate to read it.

I fought in the snow barefoot to give you the freedom to vote and you stay at home because you don’t believe it matters.

I left my family destitute to give you the freedom of speech and you remain silent on critical issues because it might be bad for business.

I orphaned my children to give you a government to serve you and it has stolen democracy from the people.

It's the soldier not the reporter who gives you the freedom of the press. It's the soldier not the poet who gives you the freedom of speech. It's the soldier not the campus organizer who allows you to demonstrate. It's the soldier who salutes the flag, serves the flag, and whose coffin is draped with the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag!!!

life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away!

My personal lady teacher hero while I was at CHS was Hope Northern. Wouldn't have the skills I have today if it hadn't been for her faith in me. I have thanked her many times in my head. Plus, my friend and schoolmate, Mary Ann Datillo, who urged me on and refused to give up on me. I have thanked her too many times. And, Mr. Ross, who also encouraged me many times in my musical aspirations. He was a wonderful, caring and sensitive individual.

For those that have been missing Ed Gebharts column, you will be happy to know it can be found in the Newspaper section...DELCO Times, Editoral Section today on OLDCHESTERPA.

Ed has written about the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., but what he has given us in this story is A connection to Chester, PA...The article is about the roll the Laran Bronze Works of Chester owned and operated by the Welker brothers, Larry III and Randy, is playing in the memorial's construction. Unfortunatly if you do not have the paper available to you the photos will be missed, but the read is good and you might want to pick up todays edition of the Daily Times to see the full page of pictures. Its good to read about todays Chester on such a positive note.

I used to live in Highland Gardens on Price Street in the late 1960's and early 1970's. I went to Pulaski Junior High. Jenny Foster are you out there? I used to walk home from school and stop at McGlones store for candy and feel sorry for the Rez kids who had to wear uniforms! That was back when Rez had no fence around it:) I also remember that Joe Klecko used to hang out on the corner of Culhane Street-then went on to play with the Jets! Some of my friends back then were Mindy Sawyer, Eileen Keith, Richard Sloan, Bob Maynes and Maryanne Hampton. If any of you get this message please contact me:)

Dan:

John’s site has been such a positive influence in regard to the History of Chester, PA. .More History has been opened here in the past two years, than has been available in other areas of research locally for many years. OLDCHESTERA has opened the door for many that are researching a City where family members came to seek their fortune and raise their families in the early 1900's..Through this site many have found old friends, family members, and most of all memories that were forgotten and now awakened . The pictures here are almost a living history book to enjoy... the effort and time that John puts into this site is endless and I know it has become somewhat like a ministry to him.

The Chester Times (DELCO Times) has been a major paper in most of our lives...It was and is the paper where the reader can find the name of someone that they know or have known in their lifetime..It is full, the stories are currant and well written, the photos reflecting the news and the classifieds do get results (Hello Dotty). Of course they have problems as any business in these troubled times have, but as we have seen here, much thought has gone into a decision that has heard the needs of the people...Mr. Heron through reinstating the online features will also be adding to the history of Chester….

Some of your old classmates were mentioned in the “Other Times” column…this week something about a prom..

To: Wanda, Iris, Betty, Joan, Don, Dan, …other class of 54…recently the column had a mention of the home room that was decorated in the theme of “Susie Snowflake” and Mrs. Whites room won. I can still remember the big white cotton clouds that many of you made to decorate with the twinkle dust, I think they were made in Iris’s basement…then snowflakes were made with the sparkle dust and hung on strings from the clouds... another time there was Frosty the Snowman and Little town of Bethlehem … Was that in room 121...Marilyn Link and her crew made the snowman for the flag twirlers dance routine..remember those, was that for the Thanksgiving Day game…what great memories watching the Twirlers holding the life size snowmen and dancing to the band playing Frosty the Snowman..Thanks for the memories..and thanks to the DELCO times for the little snip about "Susie Snowflake"..

Note to Ed. G.....a story about "Dempsey" would be great....

To Caroline and others--Thanks for joining in and appealing to The Times. It will be good to put it back with my booknarks and once again be able to read Ed Gebhart's column. He keeps us aware of our roots by writting about the people of Chester and Delaware Co that we grew up with or read about in the Chester Times. Thanks to an enlightened Phillip Heron who fielded our criticism and responded so graciously.

We do enjoy Ed's column as you see it mentioned so often on this site..Another favorite is "Other Times".

Providing these features and the online edition to those that have moved from the area is applauded.

I lived in the Sun Hill area of Chester from 1958 (born at Chester Hospital) to 1981, and went to Saint Roberts and Saint James. Here are some of the things I remember about Chester and my youth:

I can still remember my Kindergarten teacher at Stetser, Ms Wilson. She was one of two people who seemed to have been around forever, the other was Frank Toole.

I can also remember the fire horn blasting from the Goodwill Firehouse, and the chimes from PMC.

I used to get my haircut at Rudys barber shop on Morton Avenue, right next to the Melrose dinner. We got our Hoagies at Squires.

I can remember when the Cadets would throw their hats in the air after the graduation ceremony at PMC, and the kids would be lined up on the field running to grab a hat.

I remember getting my Sunday bests at Spears. The boys department was downstairs. And driving to downtown Chester on Friday night, and dropping my mom off so she could go shopping. We would pick here up latter on. Can you still do that?

I remember the Pulaski Day parades, sledding in Washington park, and walking from Sun Hill to the Chester East Little League field. What ever happened to Whitey or AL ("Watch that ball!", "Stay off them tracks!", "Please remain standing for the Little League pledge."). I can still hear the words.

And one other thing - My Aunt Julie was the best organist ever at the Holy Ghost Church.

Dear Fans of All Things Old Chester:

As the editor of the daily newspaper for Delaware County and the paper that once called itself the Chester Times, I know we upset many of our fans from all across the country with our recent decision to scale back our offerings on our Web site.

That is why it gives me great joy to alert you that we are changing our policy.

We have decided to once again start posting some of our familiar columnists, including Ed Gebhart, on our Web site. Please alert your friends and Ed's faithful readers that they will once again find his column displayed on the site on Friday and Sunday.

As always, you can find Ed's column and all the news about Delaware County by going to www.delcotimes.com. Ed's column is posted under the link for "Editorial."

As I have said many times, we value our readers, both of the print edition and online, especially those who have been faithful followers of the paper since the days of the Chester Times. It is my pleasure to let the readers know of this change in our policy.

Hope this helps. Feel free to call or e-mail if you need more help.

I was checking out some of the pictures of the police officers. It made me laugh when I looked at Charlie (Scrappy) Davis' picture. He had some big ears for a small guy. Or was it the cap? He was my law enforcement teacher at CHS...Scrappy you out there. He would have given me an "F" on my report card if I would have made fun of him back in 76.

To: Laura and Nina From: Carol(Moffett)Andrews

Hi! It was great to see your responses on here. I'm so glad the both of you remember me. Where has the time gone? Laura, I'll be sending you an email. And Nina, I'd love to email you too. Please email me so I can have your address. We have a lot of catching up to do. I'm so glad I found this site.

I read some of the recent postings and I don't remember the Washington Theater. I do remember the Mack Theater on 9th Street. Anyone remember when the area down around Medfords was called Commission Row? I remember going there with my mother. It was like an open air market.

John Bullock sent me a Welcome Email. He mentioned that the All-Chester Family Reunion will be on 10/4 this year. I'm planning on going. I hope to see you there Laura. Nina, that's a long way to come, but it would be great to know when you will be visiting in Chester. I'd love to come up and see you.

Nina and Laura, let's keep in touch!

WOW ... just found this website today ... I was born in Chester in 1957 and raised there until I left for the Air Force in 1975. Lots of nostalgia there, including guys I played with at Chester East Little League, the Police Department (where my Dad worked for 27 years), and the fact that people remember Sun Village and that PMC was there before anyone ever heard of Widener College/University!

I was never a resident of Chester proper, but I Lived in Marcus Hook, Linwood, Boothwyn, Wallingford and Swarthmore, so I have Chester surrounded. I also have a lot of fond memories of Chester since the family went shopping there every Friday night in he '20s and '30s.I was also at Chester High School from 1931 through 1935 and spent lots of time at the YMCA before and after that. I don't see members of the class of '35 checking in at the website. Why not?

I think Chester was a good place to grow up and still a good place to be from. I am proud I'm from there. I graduated from Smedley in 1941. I was remembering some of our teachers, Mr. Roehm, Miss Mason, Miss Kelley, Miss Gore, and Mr. Rhoades. And who can forget Margret Stetser, our Principle. There are so many more I remember, do you remember them? They were the best teachers, And it's true, "What Chester Makes, Makes Chester." Doris O'Brien Chinn

I took a little tour of the website and recognized so many of the places that were mentioned and even a name or two. When I found out about the website, I thought it would be fun and nostalgic to take a walk through my childhood and school days. I was not disappointed. I remember Nina Bornos from CHS and Mr. Maginnis from Smedley Jr High. That's really going back aways. I think I had him for algebra but he also taught gym? I hope to hear from some of my classmates that remember me.

Iwas a senior at CHS in 1968, the year of the fire. I remember the day well, Nancy NOvak Linda Irivin, Carol Vanier, Bud VAnier, Sally Mcnichols, and others got together after we saw the building or what was left of it at Linda Irvins house, she was student council president, we wanted to figure out how we could keep the spirit of chs alive. we had a basketball game that week and we wanted to keep the school spirit going. We came up with the slogan THE SCHOOL IS GONE BUT THE SPIRIT LIVES ON. IT DID LIVE ON WE completed our senior year in different buildings. but always came together for basketball, and all school events. I personally lost alot of work and projects in the fire. It was a joke after that to tell the teachers any homework that wasn't done was lost in the fire. I also lost my first pair of hi-top converse allstars, that i had worked, begged, borrowed to get for my senior year on the girls basketball team

I had 2 sisters and 2 brothers, Margaret, Rose Ann, Harold and Harvey Moffett. When I found the Chester web site, I thought it would be fun and interesting to look back on the city of my childhood days.

She was always fun to be around, a really up=beat happy person, I guess that's how she got the nickname Bubbles! Thanks for letting me know it was Bill Savage. My brain just wouldn't pull that one out. I have lived in Florida for only six months. We left Pa. and took a detour through Cleveland, Baltimore and Charlotte before landing here. I remember the night of the CHS fire. I lived across the street and stood there and watched in disbelief. The next morning I went outside and it was an unbelievable site. The trees, ground and what was left of the building were coverd with ice - it was an eerie, almost ghost-like feeling - and, of course, a feeling of loss.

I took pictures - now if I can only remember what box they are in, I'll send them to John to add to the site.

I remember the fire well, I thought it was such a shame that the blacks burned down the school. Riots were the norm around that time and the National guard was on the streets of Wilm, guns and all aand Viet Nam was raging everyday and the 60's were a lot to remember for our age group.

January, 1968, I was a junior at CHS. Remember that morning, in January, my mother waking me up for school, only to tell me it was on fire. What a horrible feeling that was. Do you remember what you were doing 35 years ago today? - January 10, 1968?

Certainly not the brightest day in Chester's history, but it was the day after Chester High was destroyed by fire. Any recollections you'd like to share here?

Hey - I miss those old days of Chester, PA. Walking downtown. Stopping at John's for a hotdog. Of course who could forget the newstand! Remember the Thanksgiving Day game between St. James and Chester High. I remember when the college was PMC (Pennyslvania Military College)and the freshman would have a parade near Halloween each year for initiation. Those poor guys would be wearing nothing but their underpants! Then they would have to stand at attention at the bon fire on campus while they were doused with shaving cream, eggs, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, etc. What a mess - but it was good clean fun! Bet some caught a bad cold though! Would love to hear from any former school mates (CHS '69/Smedley'66 and Larkin) take care and stay happy and healthy! Debbie

Re Peg Marshall - What Pat McFadden has posted was correct but I can add a wee bit. Peg married a St. James classmate of mine named George McGorman. They moved to Dover, DE and George was a teacher. I don't know what Peg did but she was sharp enough to do whatever she set her mind to. George did an outstanding job as a teacher. He even received an award as the most outstanding teacher in Delaware one year. This surprised me because he had a reputation in high school as the class clown and everyone thought he might go on to be a standup comedian. He died over ten years ago and I have not heard what became of Peg.

Wayne I had an Ed Weathers as Capt of my Safety Patrol when he was in Elem School. Then he was a student when I taught from 1960-1962 at Smedley. That Ed Weathers was a fine young man. I've wondered about him over the yrs. He wanted to become a minister. If he is your dad let him know that Dan McGinniss asked about him and continues to wish him well.

Were you a kid in the Fifties or so ? Everybody makes fun of our childhood! Comedians joke. Grandkids snicker. Twenty-something's shudder and say "Eeeew!" But was our childhood really all that bad? Judge for yourself:

In 1953 The US population was less than 150 million... Yet you knew more people then, and knew them better... And that was good.

The average annual salary was under $3,000...Yet our parents could put some of it away for a rainy day and still live a decent life... And that was good. A loaf of bread cost about 15 cents... But it was safe for a five-year-old to skate to the store and buy one... And that was good.

Prime-Time meant I Love Lucy, Ozzie and Harriet, Gunsmoke and Lassie... So nobody ever heard of ratings or filters... And that was good. We didn't have air-conditioning... So the windows stayed up and half a dozen mothers ran outside when you fell off your bike... And that was good.

Your teacher was either Miss Matthews or Mrs. Logan or Mr. Adkins... But not Ms Becky or Mr.Dan... And that was good.

The only hazardous material you knew about...Was a patch of grassburrs around the light pole at the corner... And that was good.

You loved to climb into a fresh bed... Because sheets were dried on the clothesline... And that was good.

People generally lived in the same hometown with their relatives... So "child care" meant grandparents or aunts and uncles... And that was good.

Parents were respected and their rules were law.... Children did not talk back..... and that was good.

TV was in black-and-white... But all outdoors was in glorious color....And that was certainly good.

Your Dad knew how to adjust everybody's carburetor... And the Dad next door knew how to adjust all the TV knobs... And that was very good.

Your grandma grew snap beans in the back yard...And chickens behind the garage... And that was definitely good.

And just when you were about to do something really bad... Chances were you'd run into your Dad's high school coach... Or the nosy old lady from up the street... Or your little sister's piano teacher... Or somebody from Church... ALL of whom knew your parents' phone number...And YOUR first name... And even THAT was good! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ REMEMBER

.... Send this on to someone who can still remember Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, Sky King, Little Lulu comics, Brenda Starr, Howdy Doody and The Peanut Gallery, The Lone Ranger, The Shadow Knows, Nellie Belle, Roy and Dale, Trigger and Buttermilk as well as the sound of a reel mower on Saturday morning, and summers filled with bike rides, playing in cowboy land, playing hide and seek and kick-the-can and Simon Says, baseball games, amateur shows at the local theater before the Saturday matinee, bowling and visits to the pool...and eating Kool-Aid powder with sugar, and wax lips and bubblegum cigars

Didn't that feel good, just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that! And was it really that long ago

To Those interested in A.H.Wirz:

On the Yellow Menu to the left of your screen-- click on "Business"---Manufacturing Plants will come up. Scroll down and click on A.H.Wirz. Make a contribution to this board by e-mailing the webmaster and having your name and those fellow employees you can remember working with listed on the Wirz page. You--and they--will then be a part of the history of a once great industrial city.

That applies, of course, to all of the other industrial plants listed on this site. If you don't see your plant--or your parent's plant-- on the list tell John and get it listed.

Shoemaker: Paul Thompson was INDEED a smart man. Developed a color tv system before they were commercially available. He and his brother worked at the shop on Potter Street for many years until Paul's death several years ago. I remember going into his shop at nights during the late 40s-early 50s and watching what few shows were televised as he tinkered about. He was single all his life (jilted by a woman) but a remarkable man who spent many hours playing chess with a disabled young man in the area

Hi

I am trying to find out some information for a friend of the family. The grandfather was a fireman at Moyamensing Fire Co. When the firestation closed, there were items that belonged to him on display and the family would like to recover them if possible. If anyone knows anything of the whereabouts of any items from that firehouse, please contact me. The last name of the family is Hamilton, and the grandson is now a NY firefighter and sure would love to have his grandfather's helmut.

Libby,

I worked at Wirz, but for only 2 years. I was in the office and did billing and then payroll. The only name that comes to me right now from the plant is BUBBLES!. She was a gem. I always enjoyed going into the plant and talking to her. I think I worked there 79-81. I remember all the departments but can't think of the names. Don Caulfield was the plant manager at the time. I remember Lilly in the lab, and I can picture the guy in shipping, and the guy in the box department, and even the guy in the foundry, but names are lost for now.

Re Peg Marshall. I don't know who you are or why you ask about her, but I have a feeling you are male. I lost track of Peggy after high school (went all through Rez with her too and she was a favorite friend of mine), but from what I have learned, she and her husband had I believe 5 children, and I think all girls (could be wrong). However, she's single (widowed) now and I believe I heard she was living in Delaware. This wouldn't be the first time I've played matchmaker. But, you're on your own and you better be a good guy or remembering Peggy, she won't stand for anything less.

I am the daughter of George Noblit and the Granddaughter of William Noblit both of which were members of the Franklin Fire Department. My Grandfather was a member from the age of 18 until his death at the age of 94. He had his picture in the Chester Times for the ground breaking of the new Franklin Firehouse and it was mentioned in the paper that he was the oldest living firemen in Chester, Pa.

My grandfather went to the firehouse twice a day every day up until the year of his death which was 8/01/1962.

I would like to know upon the dissolving of the fire department what was done with the things that were in the hall of the fire department. I am sure there were some things that were my grandfather's displayed there and I am wondering what happened to them.

I would appreciate it if anyone has any information on these items. I can be reached at cloyjr@nc.rr.com Thank you.

Ref: Paul Thompson TV Repair 9th & Potter Sts

Paul received a field commendation from General Patton for his solving a significant problem of premature Turret drive motor failures on the tanks. He developed a "softstart" circuit, that probably helped win the war. W3DRQ, a very smart man.

Mr Bob Crawford, name brings back memory of Chester High when he first started he was a sub for our law enforcement course when Mr Charlie Davis was out. Both if I am not wrong were ex Chester Policemen turned teachers. Hey Bob remember that locked door on the back room of the law enforcement class trailer at 5th and Waters. Guess what I have to confess we weren't studying. We were playing tonk. Or kill the man when it got loud. We would shut off the lights and because there were not any windows it would be pitch black we played kill the man of whoever we caught. One guy I remember his name was John Obie he used to hide under the table screeming like he was getting his butt kicked, we got wind of it and flicked on the light and there he was hiding under the table in the corner of the room his eyes closed, screaming his head off with not a soul around him. We all busted up laughing it was so funny.

Hi Jacko,

I remember Mr Sharp the science teacher with the deformed hand at Franklin Elem. Sch. I had Mr. Sharp for Science class. He was married to another teacher but I don't remember her maiden name. She was Mrs. Sharp when I was her student.

I was in Franklin until 1951. I left there to complete 8th grade at Dewey Mann in 1952.

To skyjumper you must mean the "boys only" dormitory at the Lindhurst on Cedar Ave in Wildwood where if you stood up you would hit your head on the rafters since there were 2 rows of beds with an aisle down the middle. We used to take turns using the beds one morning Harry the owner came up and asked everyone their names "Soupy" Wallace {CHS 52] was not on the list so we had to scrape up the bucks to pay his fine since he got locked up. Also also drank wine from Jugheads dads cellar with his older bro Nick who passed away at an early age.
