Text of Obituary:

Samuel Borgese, 83, of Brookhaven, a retired Chester City firefighter, died Jan. 9 at The Belvedere Nursing Home, Chester.

Born, raised and educated in Chester, where he lived most of his life, he moved to Brookhaven in 1979.

Mr. Borgese was employed by the Chester Fire Dept. for 50 years as a driver for the Franklin Fire Company, retiring in 1976. Earlier, he served as a volunteer firefighter for Goodwill Fire Company of Chester.

A volunteer at Crozer-Chester Medical Center for many years, he was known there as "Sam, the Man." He belonged to several senior citizens groups, including the Christians of Our Lady of Charity Parish and the Parkside Senior Citizens.

A resident of Chester's Seventh Ward for many years, Mr. Borgese belonged to Lamokin Athletic Club. He formerly belonged to St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church and most recently belonged to Our Lady of Charity Catholic Church, Brookhaven. He was well-known and well-liked throughout Delaware County and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Poliafico Borgese; a son, John Borgese of Woodlyn, Ridley Township; a daughter, Rosalie Morrall of Rutledge; three sisters, Mary Carvelli of Reading, Pa., Jean Ciekawy of Florida and Elizabeth Mattus of Upland; three brothers, George Borgese of Upland, Joseph Borgese of Ridley Township and Harry Borgese of Florida; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was also the brother of the late Charles Borgese.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Charity Catholic Church, Upland Road, Brookhaven. Burial is in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple. Calling hours will be after 8:30 a.m. Monday at Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home, 2316 Providence Ave., Chester.

Instead of flowers, the family requests Mr. Borgese be remembered "with a smile" and that mourners spend time with a family member they haven't seen for a while or take a senior citizen out for a meal. Memorials may also be sent to a charity of the donor's choice.

Notes: Mr. Borgese was born 2/12/1914.
