Text of Obituary: 

Joseph E. Ellis, 87, of Winterset Farms, Wilmington, Del., a retired Chester firefighter, died Oct. 5 at Riddle Memorial Hospital.

Born in Chester, Mr. Ellis was employed by the Chester Fire Department as a driver for 20 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the International Association of Firefighters Local 1400. He was a lifelong volunteer of the Franklin Fire Company in Chester and a member [of] the Pennsylvania State Fireman's Association.

He was also employed by Ford Motor Company in Chester for 27 years before its closing.

Mr. Ellis was the son of the late Joseph C. and Ada Morris Ellis. He was the widower of Margarete Cohill Ellis, who died in 1986, and the brother of the late Carrie Galvin.

Survivors: Wife, Hazel Sutphin Schopfer Ellis; sons, John J. Ellis of West Chester, James E. Ellis of Charlotte, N.C., and Ronald B. Ellis of Aston; daughter, Elaine M. Bishop of New Holland, Pa.; stepsons, Earl Schopfer, George Schopfer, David Schopfer, and Richard Schopfer, all of Florida, and Jeffrey Schopfer of Linwood; step-daughters, Iris Giberson of Boothwyn, and Judy O'Conner of Havertown; 10 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday at the Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home, 2316 Providence Ave., Chester.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial: Mount Hope Cemetery, Aston.

Notes: Mr. Ellis was born 8/20/1912.
