Frank J. "Pat" Strain, 78, a longtime volunteer firefighter with Goodwill Fire Co. No. 2, Chester, and a lifelong Chester resident, died June 17 at Taylor Hospital, Ridley Park.

Born in Chester, he resided in Chester all of his life. He attended former St. Robert's Catholic High School and worked as a general contractor and welder for the Chester Housing Authority before his retirement in 1992.

He was a member of Blessed Katharine Drexel Catholic Church. He received an award for completing 50 years of service as a volunteer firefighter with Goodwill Fire Co. No. 2. Mr. Strain was an avid fan of horse racing and frequented the former Brandywine Raceway and Delaware Park race tracks.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Gedwell Strain; a daughter, Maryann Csanady of Middletown; a son, James J. Strain, of Collingdale; and a brother, James Strain of Delaware; four sisters, Mary Bryan, of Media, Margaret Strain, of Florida, Cecilia Cantwell and Catharine Almony, both of Ridley Township; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. A son, Charles Strain, died in 1942.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Blessed Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, East 19th Street and Providence Avenue, Chester. Calling will be after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Minshall-Shropshire Funeral Home, Middletown (State Route 352) and Knowlton roads, Middletown.

Memorials may be in the form of Mass cards or donations provided the American Lung Association, 1534 McDaniel Drive, West Chester, PA 19380-0019.
