HgC: What can I say, my memory index file is slowing down. Must be the summer lore to the shore syndrome, not age. <☺> I wish....

Yes I do remember the cattle breaking from the pens and running wild. Didn't the Chester times cover it with pictures of the Police having a round up?

Mike S: Your memory of a business on second street brought up the Medfords Slaughter house. Can remember the trucks lined up with the cattle waiting to become our dinners. Would watch them untruck the animals and they would walk that wooden ramp to the slaughter house from the trucks. It was right there were the creek runs near Rt291 (Industrial Hw, Second Street) soon to be the Clarence Bell Memorial Highway. Remember thinking of that little rhyme learned as children when watching the pigs debark. ("this little piggy went to market). I also remember how bad it smelled.

Wasn't there a large trucking sales office there too. I think late it moved to the 202 area. I think they sold Mac Trucks.

"T4M" (Thanks for the memory)

Mr. Dodds was a great man he really did a lot for Sun Village. During the strikes in the 50's and early 6o's I bet fifty per cent of Sun Village families did their shopping at Ryans store because Mr Dodds gave them Accounts to help them thru. He always was involved in civic activities also. I remember him fondly. Sal are you still out there, did you see any Larsons yet?

you know you certainly can draw attention to yourself, try to change your style somewhat, everyone recognized you no matter, Now you sgould know a church is a church, no matter what religion is studied in it. God id God to all. I can remember when my children were growing up, we are Baptist, the neighbors next door Catholic, just mere people, but their family always said that we all would burn in hell because we were not of theeir faith. That really scared my kids, now sometime after that , they all turned Baptis. go figure One thing you never argue about is politics and religion. Each to their own, a full church is better than an empty church sitting there with no souls to take care of.

In the 'early' 'early' years of the 'church' there were many times when Muslim mosques and Catholic churches changed hands, but not by 'sale', by murder and deceit by these institutions all in the name of a 'loving' God....The Catholic, or any other denomination selling a church property today, more than likely represents good business practice...

"Good Ole Joe" said that...

I certainly do remember Joe Pyne - and I knew his sister Anne too from Notre Dame. She was very beautiful and looked just like Joe.

I was shocked and saddened at his very early death (due to cancer, I believe) because he was never afraid of the truth and told it exactly like it was. Because of this, he became extremely popular and he developed such a following that his TV broadcast was syndicated all over the country. People were glued to their set when Joe's show came on. First time I saw it, I was living in a suburb of Los Angeles and was thrilled because he was from my home town and "my kinda guy". My dad admired him too.

Joe was the forerunner of the many antagonists we now have on radio, TV, etc. - He opened up the door that eliminated a lot of the BS we were subject to on TV, extracting and revealing the truth.

Of all the famous people Chester produced, Joe Pyne is at the top of my list. Long live Joe Pyne.

To Pat Crowther: Sorry I did not respond earlier. Forgive me. I live on 24th & Chestnut now. I have lived in various parts of the city from 1962-the present. I have been in this area since 87.....

MR/AKA MS. MCFADDEN: Of course I remember you and I knew that was you once I read how upset you were at that other person regarding the "MC" name game. Of course that was after I posted. But I still stand by what I wrote. And most certainly, you of all people know I have a sense of humor. However, sometimes things do get serious. Again as always in writing anything and posting anything, it is never said in malice or meant to be cruel. However serious I may or may not get, I will always stand by what I say and feel.

Everything is not written to be "serious" only when warrented. And, I am the first to stand up for another as well as myself. In reading your post about others trying to make you look stupid, well let's just say they don't know any better. And you hit the nail on the head "NO RESPECT" for the wise and seasoned members of our society. I read your anger, and I must say dear lady....you can really let er' rip! Don't! Don't feed into the likes of whomever it was and whatever it was they wrote upset you.

Your memories, feelings and opinions are yours. And we would be wise to pay attention.

As always, it is a joy to read what you write. Don't stop!

Peace......

Good morning Ms. McFadden, in reading your comments about the Catholic churches "selling" their churches to the "Baptists". There are 2 topics in life I really don't like to discuss and they are politics and religion. No one is ever right and no one ever wins. I have always thought it was awful for religions of ANY DENOMINATION to make an issue of GOD. Our Maker is not one to be fought over. Israel and the Palestinians are fighting over something which is not theirs (GOD'S LAND)you are amazed that your beloved Priests would sell a building. That is what it is a building.

Did you ever imagine in your wildest dreams that certain houses, buildings and businessess would be sold to minorities? God is to be loved in your heart and your soul. Not to be in a "building", church or foundation. God is not to be thought of as being there and only there on Sunday morning....or Sunday period.

Selling to "BAPTISTS", WHITE ROCK, THE POPE NOT PLEASED, (AGAIN, GOD IS THE ONLY ONE WHO SHOULD BE PLEASED). And your statement "ESPECIALLY BAPTISTS" You make Baptists people sound as if they are the devil himself. I have been the company of different denominations, in the churches of different denominations (EVEN CATHOLICS) never have I addressed the "worshipers" as "CATHOLICS". I have never specified what they were, nor did I care. I was there because I was invited and because it was God's house. I never looked upon my Maker as a denomination. And for each church I've attended, I have never left feeling changed or compelled to "repel" against the Catholic, Jewish person, Methodist or any other.

I always left with a feeling of joy and a new experience. It has always amazed me when I hear Catholic people speak as if they are the only and the chosen. That is not true, you know it and so do many others. But that is what you choose to believe and you very well should. No one can take that away from you. And no one should try. Beleive me, I mean no disrespect to you (as I know you are 71 years old) and no one should disrespect you or any other wise elderly person. (I am a well raised BAPTIST...LOL) And what difference does it make what denomination "THESE NEWCOMERS" are? I am not "down" with some of the gospel music I hear these days (so I ....change the station....and do not purchase the music) I can't make it go away.

Things change. People change. And the occupants of buildings certainly change as well. I am so sorry you were never allowed to worship with others (especially THE BAPTISTS), because you would understand that the key word in all of this is "worship" and the person we worship is God. And if it gets that bad in life that we praise a building more than we do the Lord, then yeah things are bad.....for all of us.

Oh yeah, and thanks for your insight on the "MAC-MC" Attacks. You remember the old saying what's in a name? Well a lot. I found out a lot about mine. And I have relatives who are "MAC'S AND Mc's".

You have a wonderful day...Stay cool! STAY INSIDE! IT'S HOT!!! EMBRACE THE DAY

I am working on a novel. The setting is Chester circa 1940. I need some geographical info, especially the area around the Ford auto plant and IHM parish. I would appreciate getting any leads on reference sources that I could check. A map of the area in that time frame would be good. But any info about the boundaries of the Ford plant and whatever else was in the area between Lloyd and Tilghman Streets and below Second Street. For example, Diamond Ice had a plant on Second Street but I don't know what was between the Front Street railroad tracks and the river. Thanks in advance for any help you might give. Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever imagined Resurrection of Our Lord Church becoming "River of Life Church". What demonination or non-demonation are these newcomers? And, St. Anthony's is now a Baptist church? Lord preserve us, as my grandmother would say. As Catholics we were forbidden to attend a church of any other demomination - especially Baptist. Now the Catholics sold one of their churches to the Baptists? Somehow, the name "St. Anthony's White Rock Baptist Church" ain't gonna sit well with the Pope, unless he's into rocks.

It all goes back to the old question of why is something wrong today, but right tomorrow. I suppose the right thing to do is nothing - just rock and roll along with the flow. St. Anthony, where were you when we needed you most?

This month marks the tenth anniversary of the consolidation of five Roman Catholic parishes in Chester (St. Michael's, St. Anthony's, Immaculate Heart, Ressurection, and St. Robert's). St. Hedwig's remains as a mission church of Sacred Heart Parish in Clifton Heights, PA. St. Robert's became St. Katherine Drexel. St. Michael's was sold to St. John's U.A.M.P. Chuch for $100,000. The school is still used by Catholic Social Services. St. Anthony's was sold to White Rock Baptist Church. Immaculate Heart is the center for Evangelization of St. Katherine Drexel Church. Next Sunday, June 29, St. Katherine Drexel Parish will observe its tenth anniversary as a parish. Time flies!! Resurrection is now the River of Life Church.

The Howard McNeil refered to is really Harold McNeily. He lived on Concord road in Chester and was at one time the City treasurer. He owned and operated a photo shop on E. 9th St in Chester many years ago (next to the old Lewis Crozer library) A very nice gentleman. Was my neighbor for many years on E. Mowry Street in Chester. Harold passed on around 1998.

Well, anonymous, you are right in what is perceived is up to the reader. But two posts have been deleted, thank goodness, wherein "no name" in response to my previous post, posted "there is no fool like an old fool" = obvious sarcism and very evident in that she knows I am an "old" lady - 71 yrs to be exact -showing no respect at all for her seniors or the reason for this site.

There are unfortunately certain posters on this site, who, no matter what I post, feel a compulsion to try to make me look stupid. It simply will not work.

John Bullock's site is just too damn important to the history of a once-great city - I might get upset, at times very angry, but I will continue to contribute as much as possible to the history of my city and mentally challenge those whose only interest is self-serving and making others look foolish. Their nonsense is a blight on the good people who worked so hard to make Chester a once-proud city, and their negative attitudes (God forbid) will never restore it to a least a city to live peaceably in.

I agree with you anonymous, and most surnames do have a meaning representing the trade in which one was involved. I have been told my last name "Fadden" means "little streamlet" in Gaelic - so sometimes the name comes from another source.

One thing that has always puzzled me though (knowing the "Mc" and "O" represent "son") how did they identify their daughters? See girls, we've made great strides. We are finally entitled to a last name.

Many of these names began as patronyms to define a son from his father or grandson from his grandfather. Thus, the reason for the common prefixes found on Irish surnames. Mac, sometimes written Mc, is the Gaelic word for "son" and was attached to the father's name or trade. O is a word all by itself, signifying "grandson" when attached to a grandfather's name or trade. The apostrophe that usually follows the O actually comes from a misunderstanding by English-speaking clerks in Elizabethan time, who interpreted it as a form of the word "of." Another common Irish prefix, Fritz, derives from the French word fils, also meaning "son."

Hmmm - the name "McNeal" - couldn't help but jump in here. "McNeal" - changed many times to "MacNeal" (could be Scotch because of the "Mac" instead of "Mc") or also just plain old "Neal" (the "Mc" being dropped because of not wanting to be recognized as Irish - due to the bigotry against the Irish at the time. I know this to be a fact, because my mother's ancesters were originally "McNeal" but the "Mc" dropped so they could get work. My grandfather then became a respected engineer in the city of Chester and his son, John, a writer for the Philadelphia Enguirer.)

So now we have a "Howard McNeal". Because children were almost always named after an ancester, if your name resembles a "McNeal" and there are "Howards" in your family, it just may be your ancester's oil painting on eBay. In the 1940's, "McNeal" was a common name in Chester. My first introduction to the greatest sandwich ever concocted on earth (the "Hoagie") was by the family of a boy I grew up with (now deceased) by the name of Richard MacNeal, also had a teacher by the name of Mrs. McNeal (either at Larkin or CHS - not sure at the moment) - but never knew anyone by the name of "McNeal" that I didn't like - good and generous people.

Oh, incidentally, for those of you interested in the meaning of names, words, etc., in the old Irish language ("Gaelic" maybe), if "Mc" appeared before your name it (as I understand it) meant "legitimate"; "O" on the other hand, meant "illegitimate". Now, don't throw rocks at me - that's the way the old world was - thank goodness, it no longer exists. No one is illegitimate nor In-valid (hate the word "invalid"). Just a bad choice of words.

Wondering if Anna, (cannot remember her last name but she was Ukranian) who attended Holy Ghost visits this site? She had a huskie that I loved and was afraid of :) and a big sister that I felt the same way about! Her mother was the best cook and made those beautify Easter Eggs.

We had a clubhouse in the summer in her dog's house- dues=10 cents each day. I remember her taking me to her school's Halloween party. It was one of my favorite memories. I would love to hear from her! Can anyone help? ThANKS!

Margie

Caroline..... I was fortunate enough to have done both. First made a shop apron[sort of proud of it,though I wouldn't admit it. We then had cooking class. We made a Waldorf salad. I had never heard of one. It seemed like an odd list of things to combine. Walnuts, apples and salad dressing together didn't seem right. It was actually very good. Haven't had one since. Thanks for jogging the old memory. Forgot all about it. I remember seeing the sewing boxes the girls made in shop too.

RE: Archives -H. McNeal

Way back in the archives I remember the mention of a McNeal family that lived on Concord Road. Also mentioned was one of the family was a artist. Well tonight while browsing Ebay I saw a picture for sale that Howard had painted.

the information about it was the picture was painted in 1940. It is called "Landscape Chester, Pa. an oil on canvas by a Chester, PA artist The signature on the back or the back of the canvas is a lite one but includes the address from way back then. Howard McNeal, 1128 Concord Ave., Chester, PA, Ph - Chester 2-5634.

Paul: at the reunion, Mr. Phillips was kind enough to bring a instructional copy of the sewing box the girls make in shop. It resembled a book. Do you remember making a shop apron in Mrs. Phillips class? or did the guys in your class learn to cook while the girls used the shop area?

RE:: Dewey Mann and Horace Mann. It's my understanding that Horace-Mann was 1st.-6th. grades. Dewey was 7th.-8th. I had my home room in the Horace-Mann bldg. It was in the gym in the basement. All of my classes were in the Dewey bldg. Shop, home economics and gym were in the Horace -Mann. Yes,they were both on the same parcel of land. Last time I was in the neighborhood they were gone. All that remained were the basketball nets. The bldgs. were quite old when I attended [1950-52] John J. Vaul was Principal at the time.

Judy: If you go into the schools on the side menu scroll down to Dewey. it will tell you about both schools. Horace Mann is also in the school section. Many people have talked about their memories at both on the NEWSSTAND. They can be found in the archives. At the last reunion of OLDCHESTERPA on of the former teachers came. Mr. Jesse Phillips.

Hello everyone. You were all so nice to say things about Beiling and Oberg. Now can you help me. My aunt said my dad went to the Horace Mann school and to Dewey School before Chester High. On here is is called the Dewey Mann school. Did they combine or is she mistaken. He was born in 1919 and that is about all I know about his schooling. She is older and hardly remembers she said. Thanks

Mike Shea,

I think you mean the ivory art collection that was housed at the Deshong Mansion on Edgmont ave in Deshong Park. On occasion, my friends and i would go there if we had nothing else to do and it was quite fun to inspect the intricate ivory carvings.

Here's a Mac Moive memory I'm sure anyone who went to the Mac in the 50's will remember the horror moive "Them", I think they showed at least once a month. One winter saturday my friend Linda and I Sat thru the two showing of it. It featured bugs living in the sewers and being affected by nuclear waste. They grew to monsterous sizes and started roaming the city. They made a noise just before the would pop out and grab someone. After the movie we walked home the short cut thru the ball feilds. YOu had to go thru this little corridor with high weeds on both sides to get frome the old little league feild to the big one. It was always scary to go thru this because both sides had swamp areas and things would run across or slither across. Well after almost 4 hours of "Them" we were really cautious . We were half way thru when we heard the noise, really it was exactly like the moive, we took off running and didn't stop till we were in our houses. I probably could have got the President's Fitness award for track! Years later I figured out the sound we heard was a car with chains on going down 9 th Street.

Sorry for the previous post; i pushed the wrong button!

I worked at the MAC theater selling tickets on Saturday morning, Sunday afternoon adn a few nights during the week while i was in high school.

I was terrified on my first day alone in the cashier's booth as i walked out there and saw such a huge line full of raucous, squealing kids in perpetual motion. I somehow made it through the morning but was like a limp dishrag at the end.

The prices were .10 for kids and .15 for adults but after 4 pm the prices went up to .15 for kids and .20 for adults.

However, on some Saturday nights, we had movies in Cinemascope which increased the prices to .20 for kids and .25 for adults and i had to field many complaints about the high prices.

I walked to and from the MAC from my home in Eyre Park; i went there on my day off to see "Gone with the Wind." John Mangan was manager at that time.

What great days!

I am researching the Dishong/Deshong Families and came across two early 1900's Postcards from Chester, Pa. One of the Deshong Memorial Park and the other of the Alfred O. Deshong Memorial Art Gallery. I have just visited the Chester Rural Cemetery Lookups and will seek additional information from that source, but am curious as to any and all information that is available on Alfred O. Deshong. My "hunch" is that he is a descendant of the Peter Dishong, City gatekeeper for the City of Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War, accused by the British of Treason. These charges were later dropped. Alfred O. Deshong seems to have been a rather wealthy, philanthropic gentleman. Thanks for reading my message. Regards, Harry A. Dishong

I remember that building because we use to past it on the way to the Mac and if the big door was open we were afraid to cross in front of it. I don't remember why we were scared but I do remember running passed it if it was open. Wasn't there two houses that kind of sat up on a hill next to it?

Hi Bud and John, That was it. Down across from what was the Buick dealer. before 9th street. if you are heading down toward the water, its on the right hand side. It looked like a big garage door front. The building is still there. I pass it all the time. I have a lot of wonderful memories from that time. My dad died in 66 and that is the place I always remember him working.Do you remember when you parked your car on 7th street, next door to Caruso's Music Studio. the manstood in a little tiny house and you would give him the key. When you were finished shopping you could come back (after having a dog & small coke in a bottle at Johhny's Doggie shop) and ask for your blue 51 Studebaker and he would bring it out to the front for you. Once we drove as far as the Buick dealer there when my mom discovered it was the wrong car. She was a nervus reck trying to get it back to get ours. John, I think we are the same age from some of your posts. I went to St.Roses with a lot of the kids from the village. I came down there a lot to play afterschool. I guess I babbled enough for now, Have a great day

Carol Moffett, thanks for the memories!

I remember the tap rooms too. My grandmother also used to work at the yarn factory. I remember going there and seeing all the spools lined up. The place had a neat smell to it too. I see those same spools for sale at antique shops.

I don't think I know you but I remember the Zac family. I went to a few of their birthday parties; I remember lots of brothers. I lived on Caldwell, a block away.

I also remember hearing the whistles go off at Sun Ship at quitting time. Then rush hour would start.

And the Mac theater? I went every Saturday and waited in line. I remember the big picture on the wall of Minnie Mouse outside the girls bathroom and Mickey Mouse outside the boys!

Judy: You got my attention with the question about Beeling and Olberg. What time period would that have been in?. I was raised in Sun Village from 1927 till 1952 when I left. The only sheet metal place that I know of was "Nick Kennis" on 12th street across from Jefferis school. The was a mill on the curve on Morton Ave across from what was once "O'Brian Buick. I don't remember the name of it but I think it was a textile mill. But the name Beeling and Olberg seems to ting a bell.

Hey, Zac Nice to see your comments on here about Sun Ship and McIlvain Street. A great neighborhood back in the day. Zac and I lived across the street from each other. My dad worked for Sun Ship, too. He quit working there because of the lay offs. He worked for Irving Worsted for a while too. They made yarn. It was at 9th and McIlvain. Took up the whole block between McIlvain and Caldwell and Green Street and 9th Street. I remember walking down there in the summer to take him his lunch. If I was lucky Happy would stop by and my dad would buy me a snow cone. Chester Machine was on 6th Street between McIlvain and Morton Avenue. Mr. Minka had the gas station on the corner of 6th and Morton Avenue. I think it was an Atlantic Station back then. He also owned the bakery on Morton Ave and Mr and Mrs Davies had the neighborhood candy store. I remember the days of penny candy well. The Trush Family had the local grocery store on 7th and McIlvain. And Mr and Mrs Richle had the neighborhood bar. Back then they were called a "Tap Room". The neighborhood elementary school was Morton School. Box hockey, anyone ? And the local movie house was The MAC. Kiddie matinee on Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. 15 cents to get in and 10 cents for candy. You read it right guys - 15 cents to get in ! And you got to see the movie twice that day. Hard to believe, huh? My, my, where has the time gone. The years teach much that the days never know. The good old days. Great memories of the neighborhood - right, Zac?

On the way to my Grandparents place on Elsinore I always saw those cranes. My neightbor worked there for over 30 years, always saw him walking home from the bus stop on Roland Rd with his lunch pail. Those were the days when all was "perfect" shall I say? From a kids point of view "back when", waxing nostalgic.

I to remember the shifts at Sun Ship. When I was little my Dad worked at the yard. He was a crane operator. He told me as long as I could see the cranes at Sun Ship he could see me. He said if your thinking about doing something your not suppose to, look up and if you see the cranes I'll see you do it and you'll get punished. Now if you lived in Sun Village, you could see those darn cranes from everywhere, even the school yard. It never really stopped me from getting in to trouble but I can remember looking up at those things and thinking is it worth it. I also remember thinking when I went to Smedley, finally you can,t see the cranes. Credit to my Dad it was a clever way to make me think about my actions away from home.

My Dad, Ervin H. Filbert, worked at Sun Ship for 46 years, retiring in the 1970's. He was a forman in the Welding Dept. My Uncle, Charles (Charlie) Filbert, was employed at Sun Ship for years as well. I can remember going with my Dad to watch launches. Also, waiting with my Mom in our car for the whistle to go off at the end of my Dad's shift. I use to love watching all the men running out of Sun Ship.

West Ender,

My grandfather used to own the store at the corner of 10th & Keystone Rd. called Pop's. Guys from the West End would hang out in there shooting pool & playing pinball. Most of the them were pretty respectful, but just in case he had that German Shepherd named Lobo that laid by his side, (a gun with four legs and teeth so to speak). There were quite a few decent players back then that played at my grandfathers or down at the pool hall next to the Village Cafe, I think it was called the Four Seasons. My brother Cholly and my cousin Greg Morgan were both pretty good pool shooters. I'd take a good game of pool or pinball over a video game anyday.

Hi again..Paula, I was only 6 in 1962. I wasn't allowed to venture up to Remington St. at that age. I do remember the Fiorelli's. I believe Larry was the same age as my aunt..Judy Baynes. I remember Joey Fiorelli more. He's closer to my age. And. John, you're right Larry did pass away far too young in life.

My mother and three sisters lived at 1116 Curry st for a long time. Her name was Pat Baynes..her sisters were Doris, Shirley and Judy.

I do remember tha Haussman family too, at least John and Michael, we went to Jefferis School together. Does anyone remember Laura Glatts, or her family.?? She lived on the 1100 block of Remington..second house from the Terrill street corner.(even side) First grade crush for me, you know.

Hello everyone in Chester! I've been in CA for 33 years now, but there is still no place like home. I have two sons, and recently returned to college after my youngest graduated high school. I graduated from The University of California at Riverside with degrees in Sociology and Psychology, and will be doing Graduate studies this fall at The University of Redlands in Redlands, CA. I certainly miss the steaks and hoagies from Chester. I also miss the closeness of the church community there. I am so happy that Chester is getting on its feet. I often tell my sons about the old Chester. It's difficult for them to picture how it used to be, but when I break out the photos they get the picture. I am looking forward to a reunion for class of 1965. The last reunion I attended was around 1974 or 75. I remember doing the fashion illustration for Dana Gowns in down town Chester when I was in the 11th grade. My art teacher, Mrs. Molloy, recommended me for the position, and I kept it until I graduated. I used to love the Chester Mother's Day parades. Chester has a way of praising mothers that is uncomparable.

John...I sure do remember Mrs. McCray. I think her first name was Sara. I knew two of her grandsons, Barry Chazin, who lived in the second house from the corner on Thomas st. (at Johnson)..and Billy McCray who lived on Hancock st, I think...... Paula...were you from Sun Village??? Who were your sisters, maybe I know them. Mrs. MaCray always watched out for the kids she helped cross Morton Ave..as well as Melrose Ave.

Does anyone remember the Halloween and Easter parades we used to have at Jefferis??? My dad has some old home movies of some Halloween parades, where we paraded around the outside of the school, all dressed up in our costumes. Up Morton Ave..Up Melrose Ave. down 12th st..down Hyatt st. back to Morton Ave. Man they were some fun times. Jeff Larson, Sandy Blythe, Bunny Turk and I were dressed up as the Beatles for Halloween of 1964. We were in Miss Smith's third grade class. We won a prize and got to be in the very first Halloween parade in downtown Media. We were on a flatbed truck, trying to lip sync to Beatles music recorded on a portable reel to reel tape recorder that belonged to Betsy Larson. Mr. Larson made the mock-up guitars out of plywood. He painted them to look exactly like the guitars the Beatles used. He used fishing line for the guitar strings. Like I said..it was a FUN time growing up in Chester....

Peace

Good morning people. Did anyone other than myself read the "MEMORIES" in the Del. Co. Times today by BOB TENNANT? PAGE 6...Well I had to send him an e-mail of course and here it is:

Good morning Bob, Just read your "Memories" in today's edition of the Times. Question? Have you been reading the great memories of myself and others @ www.olchesterpa John Bullock's website? Sure sounds like it. Or you could of course be going thru a memory lane course yourself. Are you aware of this site? If so, please pass it on to others. In fact there should be an article about it. I don't ever recall seeing one. More people should be informed about this site. I do it and I am sure others as well, but the "news media" sure can get this out there much faster and to a wider range of readers. It is indeed a great site! Go on the site, read my memories of Speares, Sears Woolworth's. Read my memories of Mays water ice and Woolworth's. And read the momories of Stotter's recalled by another Chesterite! So amazing how you had this same "memory"! Share the site and pass it on!!!! MEMORIES ARE GREAT!!!! Thanks for sharing yours.

EMBRACE THE DAY, BOB! Peace and Love, S. Diane Shamburger

Hey, if his memories can be in the Times so can ours! I just want him to know that this site is a great inspiration for all.

EMBRACE THE DAY!

Does anyone remember the report cards in grade school, in Chester in the 50's they didn't put grades on them, each subject had a space and the teacher would write things like "Does her best", Needs to improve ect. I remember every year sweating out the last day to see if I would pass to the next grade. My Mom would say what does Does her best mean, Maybe her best isn't good enough! Iremembered that and always though is my best good enough to pass. Looking back now I realize I had nothing to worry about.

Iremember the cakes my mother would come up with, a carasell with animal crackers on top an a cut out top, a angel food cake with a barbie doll inthe middle and the cake was her dress, once she made on that was decorated with penny candy. Hi Mary Lou, yes Elaine was the oldest and was really nice too The accident was in 1962 I think. It was with a VW and a T Bird. The T bird was on it's way home from the shore and Elaine was with some kids from the village and they went for ice cream to somewhere on Concord Rd. when it happened. Such a shame. I remember Ginny, Rita and of course Ann (CHS class of 74). They lived across from the Larsons (my best friend for years, Jeff Larson).Ann was one of the kids who hung around on the corner of Thomas and Johsnon sts. playing kickball, dodgeball and release. We'd play there many summer evenings until the street lights would come on. That was our curfew.

Here’s a conversation for you. Be warned it's long. When asked in group discussion this past weekend what it was like growing up, I asked my inquisitor “Growing up, or growing up in Chester? “In Chester was his reply.” Well without a blink of an eye or hesitation I proceeded to answer. That is one question I love posed to me (just don’t ask my age, after all I am a woman!). I glared directly in the eyes of my inquisitor and I smiled with the “oh you want to know huh?” Well I’ll tell you. Growing up in Chester was like an endless spring running through the meadows, sometimes silent as you hear the song of robins and the laughter of butterflies. It was like days of wonder and nights of anticipation for more of what yesterday. It was like the swiftness of Jesse Owens blazing past everyone in his path and never looking back. Never regretting being a winner.

Growing up in Chester was like a kite on a brisk March day sailing, going left going right and reaching new heights. My Chester was a life of freedom to play outside til dark (as long as you were in front of the door)singing Temptations songs (with moves to match), laughing at the “Supremes wanna bees) and doing the Cool Jerk. It was days of anticipation for “just five more minutes mom” and nights of “but I ain’t sleepy yet.” Growing up in Chester was the Apollo Theatre on Saturday with Terri and Irene and Edith Ann. Taking our fifty cents and staying all day. It was some Saturday nights at the Great Skate roller skating (I watched! I still can’t skate).

It was having your best friend’s dad “The Booty Clark” give you a ride in the police car and you lick your tongue at everyone else who had to walk (of course being in the back of a police car then was envy of others not shame). It was Donald Swanson looking at you and giving you a wink and sense of safety. It was like being a celebrity knowing you knew “The Cops” who were your friends, your protectors. The men you feared and respected with love. It was getting in the movies free because your uncle knew Mr. Mack and Swanson was on the door.

Chester to me was like Miles Davis being cool & Mellow on Sunday as I went to Bethany and came home and ate good ole’ fried chicken, collard greens and macaroni and cheese. I was stopped in mid sentence and questioned “THIS IS CHESTER? CHESTER, PA?” Yes I said, this is Chester! I continued on to offer the facts of a city which begat the likes of Ethel Waters and Lee Iacocca and was the host to Ray Charles at times. The oldest city in the state! Billy Penn’s hood. You don’t know about Chester? Yes, you know about Chester, but you know about this Chester. The Chester which has become a volcano erupting at will as the people try to put ice on it’s temper. You know this Chester, the one who has the devil trying to complete his mission-seek and destroy.

Please, don’t! you know “this” Chester without the Speares, Sears and Buster Brown. Banana splits, laughter and love. What you read about is a Chester I question too, like the barrister to Joan of Arc. I too say “Is this Chester?” But I was awakened a week or so ago saw a beacon (a small one) of hope in paint and concrete. Maybe not significant to you but it was if Sherwin Williams had made a deal with Van Gogh and painted a new town. “And you still live there, with all that’s going on? Yes, I do. But not because I have not moved away before. I have. Chester is not like a magnate to me. It has not and did not pull me back. Don’t be mis-led, if I could I would leave. And I still may. But as long as I am here, Chester will be my child to coddle, defend, protect and admit to its faults. Like a parent who loves their wayward child still, I will love Chester.

Like the butter on popcorn as you watch your favorite movie, Chester unfortunately is trying to become a thing of the past, but just like an old movie on the brink of remake, I get a blanket and Pepsi, sit on the grass…smile at the sun and wait for my Chester to make it’s grand return! What a sequel!!!!! Yeah, I’d go see that one!

Growing up in Chester? Well it’s my memory lane with stops of happiness here, disbelief there! Wonder over there and hope over there. Despair around the corner and sadness across the street. Chester was like Dorothy going to Kansas with your life in a basket. And then the unspeakable happens. You do grow up, you get older, you change and so does Chester. Sounds like a fairy tale said my inquisitor. Yeah it does, doesn’t it? But had I not lived it, I would as you be skeptical and a non believer. But I was there. I lived it and if you don’t believe me, try the words and memories of others @ www.oldchesterpa.com (guest book!)Needless to say, that was not the end of the conversation.........

So, how was your weekend?

John isn't great the way a word will evoke such nice memories. Thats what I like about this page, someone will mention a place or event and fond memories flood back. It dosn't matter what part of Chester your from we all seem to have a common thread . You mentioned earlier you lived on the corner of Johnson and Morton while growing up. Do you remember the name of the store next to the small jewelery store, it had a counter, and it might have been the post office before Joe's Hardware, the Sun Village AA moved into it in later years. Also did you know my brother timmy Jones or sister Joyce Jones, Joyce use to work at the Drug Store.

Mary Ann - Thank you so very much for posting the site for the obit of Dr. Nino. He was 88 years old when he died. That means that when he was my physician, he was in his mid 30's. Can anyone tell me of any doctor today who, at the age of 35, had the wisdom to diagnose a teenager's physical problem as relating to an emotional upset? Or one who refused to remove the entire ovary because of a cyst? (At that time, the whole ovary went if you had a simple cyst.) He didn't do what everyone else did - he used his own brilliant mind to find another way. He was not only a physician, he was a humanitarian.

He had wisdom and medical knowledge far beyond his young years. I also read where he received a bronze star for rescuing a fellow corps man during WW11. So that medal was in his possession while he was my physician (the war ended when I was 12), and I don't think many people knew about it.

Dr. Nino deProphetis is more than a credit to Chester, PA - he is a mega Star. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if his spirit isn't in the operating room right now at Crozier. So, next time you see your physician, ask him to consult with Dr. Nino before he makes his final diagnosis.

I am doing a little family history and I was wondering if anyone might remember anything about Harry Kettlewood who worked as a security guard at Baldwin Locomotive? He died April 1945 of a leg injury, a couple months after being hit by a car while directing traffic there. No relatives are living, but I remember this story, and I'm not sure if he was a great grandfather or uncle. I have no record of his having children, but I know he was married twice. I think his 2nd wife was Una. Anything anybody remembers will be appreciated. Thank you much!

I to was a "Once upon a timer". I didn't have Mrs Sharp for 6 th grade, I had Mrs Ryan. We use to practice in Mrs Sharps room before school and instead of going hoome for lunch, we'd bring a lunch and practice during lunch. I mainly did sound effects, i remember coming up with all kinds of things to make the sounds we needed. I also remember going downtown on saturday mornings to do the plays, in a big red building near Stotters department store . Ialso remember Pee Wees diner, use to go there after church at St Rose of Lima for a milk shake, when the Dairy Queen was closed

Hello again everyone!

John, Mrs. Sharpe was my sisth grade teacher at Jefferis. Her husband was the principal at Stetser. They had plays that were performed on radio station WVCH (in the old Wolf building in Chester) by students. That was my first exposure to radio. Needless to say, I've been working in radio since 1982. I spent over 10 years at what was WQIQ..WCZN in Aston. I now work at WXHL Christian Radio Station in Newark De.

And hello to you Ms. Shamburger. Glad you enjoyed the memories. Hope I didn't make you feel TOO old. Can't wait till the reunion!! A very popular Christian song talks about what you were referring to when you said that a better world awaits us..and it's not here. The song says...

Someday I will fly...To that mansion in the sky

And I'll have no regrets when I leave this world for good.

And when they say their last farwells..don't forget to tell them

That I'm not really dead...I'm just changing NEIGHBORHOODS . (from the song "Neighborhoods" by Big Daddy Weave.)

God Bless!

Pee Wees was a little joint near the Bowlero and down from the Chester Pike Drive in. Didn't a window distributor open in the diner once it closed. If the owners name was Bill, he is still living and well at the shore. His wife Naomi died several years ago. Both very good people.

Ahhhh, my no named fan. You must know me personally to call me "Diane". LOL. Before I leave for the weekend...let me thank you for your kind words. Let me thank God for giving me the strength and guts to speak what is on my mind. (Over the years I have tried to be...how do I say...more diplomatic!) YEAH that's it! I keep it real, because that is all we can do. We can't sugar coat what is right before our eyes. What sounds better, is not always best. How unfortunate that we have to be living every waking moment always looking over, around, behind our shoulders and backs.

I will once again say, yes I love Chester. I love the people in it (some of them...like I said I am honest), I love my memories, your memories and sadly....the bad ones are trying to take precedence (BUT I REFUSE TO GIVE IN!). I will defend Chester, but not blindly. I will always say and point out the good things (not many left...but maybe returning). I will also recconize and acknowledge the wrongs of our city. But never, will I deny where I am from, lived or educated.

I think when I return Monday, we all need to go back down memory lane and play the game I played (alone) when I was downtown in Chester. HOW MANY STORES CAN YOU NAME? AND WHERE WERE THEY? (AND IF YOU ARE REAL GOOD...WHO WERE THE OWNERS? ME? I WOULD FAIL ON THAT ONE!) How many movies can you name? And where were they? No cheating by looking on the site people!! I know I can name a few, but the real memory in all of this is...WERE YOU ACTUALLY A PART OF IT'S EXISTANCE? Now those are the real true "CHESTERITES" OF OLD!

Well good people, until next time... EMBRACE THE DAY.... SHAMBURGER

I too went to Jefferis and Smedley and of course CHS. Was a Mrs Sharpe at Jefferis when you went there? The five and dime was a great place for a kid I do remember the big stuff being in the back room of the store and the bakery was just down the street.

SALVATORE! I am reading your "memories" and you are reminding me of my age dude! After all, we did graduate together! A while back I reflected on those good ole' hot dogs at Woolworth's and Silvers! And not to mention the banana splits. I remember Squires too. I remember the Mission and the old Salvation Army. I got many of my clothes and toys from both! And I was not ashamed of that either. I was glad to get something!!!! You were talking about the ice cream truck Happy's. Well, I grew up in the Bennett Homes and there was this man who came around in a brown and blue ice cream truck. NO NAME...NO NOTHING...JUST THE BEST ICE CREAM IN THE WORLD. I swear it came from heaven. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. And Mays water ice! WHOOOO DOGGIE! Those were the things which made summers worth waiting for! Of course now, we pay for it in "POUNDS"! But who cares?!?! When you're young and happy, you don't think about weight!

Ahh, to be young again I always say. To be carefree, happy and feel safe from all the bad things in the world. As much as I hate to, I have to go to the senseless killings which have brought once again a cloud over families. I am sending prayers to my classmate Timmy Pugh who lost his son (to senseless, stupid and what for?) violence. His second son to meet this fate I might add. And my prayers and sympathies to the Carr family in Eddystone. And Lord, to the family of the Sweeeney child in Philadelphia.

I won't dwell on the subject of violence because it seems to be such a waste of time. I have to come to terms with the fact we are not in the land of OZ. Nor are we in Never Never land. Everything is real, and I don't have power or hugs to make it better. I am distressed and amazed that 4 children would be so evil and non caring to plan a murder of another child...their "friend". (Who wasn't after all.) I was sick to read how this young man lost his life. I was sick to hear how Mr. Carr lost his life. Our Ministers, priests and Bishops tell us a better day is coming. That we have to have faith in God and hold on. I have faith, I listen to them. I believe a better day is coming.....but not on this earth.

My better days will be on the other side. For all the families who are grieving today, tomorrow and yesterday, may God give you the comfort you will need and deserve.

To my one of my favorite music teachers and band teachers (LINDA deProphetis McDonald) My sincere sympathy on the loss of your dad.

I would love one of those ole' hot dogs Sal! And some ice cream to wash it down....ummmm...yummy!

John..I do remember going to Squires. I also remember the "five and ten". They used to keep all the big toys in the back section of the store. I remember buying pea shooters and bags of dried peas. I also remember the drug store where every month I'd buy monster magazines.

When you think about it, most all of your needs were met on that block of Morton Ave. It was a great place to grow up. Thank goodness for this site where we can go back every now and then and relive those fond memories. I lived on Curry st. from 1959 until 1989, I went to Jefferis, Smedley and Chester High..and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way!

Nino deProphetis, M.D. One, if not the most, respected, dedicated, likeable and humble but enormous contributor to the history of Chester, Pa. Without Dr. Nino, many of you who post here today, could possibly not even exist. He is not "up there" with the well-known and famous physicians of today, but had he chose fame, it would have come easily. He never left his home town for one of the "big cities". He stayed home and provided exceptional care and caring to his neighbors (everyone was a neighbor, not just a patient).

I am 71 years old and Dr. deProphetis removed my appendix when I was 16. Another surgeon was ready to remove an ovary because it had a cyst on it. Dr. Nino intervened, said "No" and today, I still have both ovaries, minus the cyst. He was my physician then, so we know he lived a long life - God's gift to Chester.

As a teenager, and if I recall correctly, his office was, at that time, right across the street from CHS, he was never too busy to see me (once for a pimple). I was having a physical problem that Dr. Nino diagnosed as a symptom of an emotional problem and talked at length with me to make me admit what my "home problem" was (how wise he was). My "home problem" involved a new stepfather that I was having a problem accepting. After talking to Dr. Nino, my physical problem went away. He let me know that my resentment was normal. He was the "wisest" physician I've ever known. Not only that, but he was so handsome. I always thought he looked like Perry Como.

So, Drs. Nino and Rocco deProphetis - two exceptional physicians who just happened to have their practice in Chester, Pennsylvania. Now, you tell me, is old Chester, PA a town to be proud of with people like these two exceptional doctors? Dr. Nino is now gone, never, ever to be replaced.

The entire town should turn out for his funeral/services and ensure that his memory live forever as not only a vital part of the history of Chester, but the entire state of Pennsylvania, if not the entire country as the "best" of small-town doctors. The end of an era. Keep his memory alive forever. Long Live Dr. Nino deProphetis.

The main problem with crime and murder is the failure of witnesses to come forward, crime is not going to stop by it self and no matter how many police you have you still need people to stand up and be counted instead eyeryone tells the police I did'nt see nothing, but then bad mouth the police, mayor and the entire system. It's time to take back the streets from the hoodlums when they see people won'nt back down only then will crime decrease.

I sure do remember the man with the pony. In fact I had my picture taken on it in 1962, right on the sidewalk outside my house. I still have a copy of the picture, so did my grandmother and my mother. As I've said before I have fond memories of growing up in Sun Village. That's just one of them.

Speaking of coal, there was an elderly couple who lived on Curry st who not only burned coal in their furnace..but wood too. I remember walking past the house on a winter's night and smelling the wood burning in their furnace. That was always a memory of winter for me.

Marylou: The truck your referred to also came to So. Chester. I can remember that it had a step up to the gate where the children would enter and maybe 5 or 6 small horses that were stationery. The floor rotated around. It was in a cage type area. The truck would come around in the warm weather just as the snowball cart did.

Our neighborhood had a snowball man. his cart was made of wood with a huge block of ice sitting in the middle. on either side was the bottles of syrup that you would choose to have on the ice he hand shaved with the ice scrapper (a collectors item today). It was made of a heavy metal that had a cup like shape. At the bottom was a opening about 2" long one side with teeth like grooves. The "snowball man" would scrape the ice and it would fill the cup. The top of the cup was a attached lid that would open to let the snowball drop into the paper cone. The ice was not the fine stuff the kids know today as water ice. None the less the memories tasted as good.

I like in Sun Village in the 50's and 60's and does anyone remember the man with the pony who would take your picture. I used to wait when the Diamond Ice man would come to deliver coal so I could get a piece to write on the sidewalk with.

I don't remember the truck, but I do remember the carnivals that use to set up off of 9th st. in Sun Village in the 60's. A merry-go-round, ferris wheel and the like. I remember my sister got grease on her dress after she rode one of the horses on the merry go round. As kids, we use to like to watch them set up the rides. By the way does anyone remember the Food Fair on 9th st and the laundromat next to it. i used to like to go to the food fair and take samples from the Lindsay Black Olive display. I'll bet I at a can full of black olives from there. They were pitted .I also got my first fishing rod from there by saving "merchant green stamps".

Diane, thanks for the trip "downtown" as we west enders called it. That was great. Felt like I was standing there with you. Let's pray the progress continues! good to hear good news.

Today, June 4, we lost one of the "good guys". Clarence John Carr was shot to death in his auto tag business in Eddystone. A true friend and great guy to be around. He will be sorely missed by all. Hopefully, the cold blooded killer will be found and justice will be served. Rest in peace John

Sun Village still exists but not in the same way that it was when you left. Many of the people that lived there when you were there probably still own their homes and some of the streets that have caring home owners still look as they did. Especially the last row of homes that run along the park. Many homes are boarded, but it seems for some reason new water lines are being put in. I heard that (probably only rumor) there is talk around that there are plans to rebuild in the area. That would be great for the many families that have stayed there and kept their houses in good shape while others decayed around them. The Stores on the Widner side of Chester Pike(?) have been torn down. There is a picture on this site of the demolition. It is now a block or two of open ground.

Judy, I remember the little candies that we ate with a spoon. I remember grade a's, little hot dogs, long orange slices, licorice, wax bottles, candy on a paper, root beer barrels and so on. We used to always get sour pickles also.

Been a while since I've logged in the site. As always it is fun to read the memories. I was through downtown Chester last week and I was shocked at the "NEW" Look! I was so glad to see they have put the street back the way it was! They have widened it again. New lamp-posts and street lights. I could not believe my eyes when I saw it. I don't get there very often as I get home late and there is no reason to go "over town" as we call it. It felt good to see tax money being used wisely. I stood there right at 5th and AVE of The States (@ Fidelity Bank!) and I just smiled. As I stood there, I played a game with myself. "WHAT STORE WAS THERE?" I had a good ole time (but I did not stand long as I did not want anyone to call for a loony wagon for me!) I saw the buildings...but no one occupying them. I saw the names of the stores....but no one standing at the counters....I peeked through the windows....but there was too much darkness and for some....there were no windows.

I counted the number of stores still opened....I stopped counting. For I did not know these stores. I know some propriortors, but the names have been changed to .....Project the present. I mosied on down to what used to be KAY's and Yorks and Buster Brown....I came back and remembered what was John Bargains on Market. I treked to what was Sears, and Weinbergs and Rogers and Silvers and ....My, aren't memories great?!! And yes "Virginia" Lou's Pawnshop is still there....doing bizness. Some things as well as some people never leave. Collars and Cuffs....still there....Lloyd's.....Been gone...

Thank you God for memories. Be they good or bad. But it's great to share them.

Hot dog anyone?!?! Meet cha' at Woolworth's! Oh, we can't. That's gone too.

John saw the picture on your home page of S. S. Kresge 5 & 10 ...brought back many memories. Also shows a loan shop. Back in the 40's and 50's many of us bought musical instruments and other items at a pawnshop called Lou's. I think it was closer to the Court house building. Just another memory your pictures bring to mind. Flagg brothers. Didn't many of us get our penny loafers there or the Florshines. Again thanks for the step back into Chesters Time machine.

Mary Lou, I do remember Happy not being so happy. Though I think he may have mellowed a bit in the 60's. Ialso remember that old bell he use to ring. you're right. It could be heard all through Sun Village.

I also remember as a kid, waiting for his truck to come to Thomas and Johnson sts. There use to be a huge rock on the corner where the field was, that we use to sit on and wait.

I had many great memories from Sun Village. My parents still live on Curry St.

Sal Remember how Happy would stand up and grab kids by the arm and drop them to the ground if they jumped up and leaned over the the candy to far. Now days he'd get arrested for that! I don't remember him being to Happy, he yelled at us alot. But your right he sold everything we needed as kids and he came to the neighborghood every day. He didn't have a electronic bell he use to use an old fashion hand held school bell, but every kid in the village heard it.

I was at the 10 year reunion, I wish we could get together for another one. Mike Daniels lives here in Lancaster, But he's very busy with work and travels alot. So i guess some one else will have sprearhead a committe to get another reunion organized. Nancy Novak lives in Brookhaven, she moved down from Boston a few years ago, Linda passed away from Cancer years back, I do miss her. Nice to hear from you. Mary Lou

Mary Lou, you really brought back some memories when you mentioned Happy. It was a great treat to get a water ice from him in the summer. Where I lived in Sun village, nearly everyone had an above ground pool. Happy would come to the corner of Thomas and Johnson and ring his bell. One of us kids would take orders from the other kids and make a run to Happy's truck, and come back with a variety of things. The fun part was trying to figure out who paid for what. But no one really cared if their order was messed up a little.

During school hours, while going to Jefferis, I remember going home for lunch, and if you timed your return trip to school for the afternoon right, you'd be able to catch Happy on your way.

My favorite water ice flavors were Chocolate, Vanilla and the "rainbow". Happy's truck had EVERYTHING!. Candy, water ice, tasty kakes, soda, balsa wood airplanes, and even cigarettes. Remember his truck had the slogan "Happy's Candy Store on Wheels". He wasn't kidding. Remember climbing on the running board below the window, so you could see all of the candy?? You could also watch Happy grind up the ice . It was a great time.

Thanks for the memories....

I remember that scalloped candy. We had a Smedley Jr High reunion recently, and one of the items in our give away bag was a small brown bag of penny candy. It had chalk like cigarettes, black licorice, wax lips, wax soda bottles with colored water in them, marshmellow ice cream cones, and paper strips with dots of candy on them. All those items and more were avalible at Mike and Bettys store in Sun Village or off of Happy's candy/water ice truck in the 1950's

my favorite (Turkish Taffy).

But what I miss most about the 50's is the way that Bryers Ice Cream was dipped and weighed. Remember how there was a scale near the cooler which held the different flavors in the large tubs. The Soda Fountain Server would hand dip scoops onto a white paper holder that sat on the scale Then they place a piece of waxed type paper over the ice cream. do you remember that at "Trips" and HoneySuckl?

Camp Sunshine is in Thornton on the grounds of the old Broadmeadows prison now renamed. The prison trustees worked around the camp doing various things such as grass cutting and miscellaneous repairs.

The camp was and is run under the auspices of Delaware County for the underprivileged children of the county.

As a girl scout from St. Michael's troop, i attended several weekend camping trips at Camp Upland. What fun we had back then.
