I just saw the earlier note about the scam emails from Nigeria (and othe countries in Africa too), that offer you millions if you will just help them get the money out of their country. They usually have a good "sob story" to go along with the pitch. ALL of these letters are scams! Never reply to the emails and NEVER give them ANY personal information. The US Secret Service investigates these scams and keeps a database of the scammers. Forward any such emails to the Secret Service at:

419.fcd@usss.treas.gov

Anyone know if Jimmy John's is still open out on Rt.202? I really miss those dogs!

Hello everyone. Linda, I'm really glad Kim remembered me. Tell her I have two grown children, but no grandchildren as of yet. I guess I wasn't aware of the crush she had on me, but I am flattered. I don't have a scanner at this time, but I hope to get one soon. I do remember Tony Esparza, and his brother Gilbert. Don't know what became of them though. I've been e-mailing a lot of classmates too. In fact I write to Judy Elliott practically everyday. John, it's good to be back and I could go for a water ice from Happy right now...or a bannana split from Mr. Softee. Talk to ya later.

Hi, my name is Jenna Schlosbon. I've been trying to trace my family tree and get some information about the Schlosbons, as they seem to be nearly obsolete today. My grandmother, Delaine Dewees, graduated from Chester High School in 1952. My grandfather, John Schlosbon, did not graduate high school, however he lived on Upland st in Chester. If anyone has any information at all about the Schlosbons, please e-mail me at JSCHLO223@yahoo.com, i'd really appreciate it. :)

Linda the name Georgie Gibbs sounds like I should remember him. Do you remember when there was a big fire in the apartments over the bakery in either 61 or 62? It seemed like every fire truck in Chester was there. Sal glad to see your back. Mary Lou are you are you still out there? Waiting for the next big rain so the drain floods I bet. It would be good if Happy came by today so I could get a water ice.

I remember getting off of the Chester Ferry one time and a car in front of us got stuck when one of the boards broke in the slip. The whole front tire was stuck. It held the ferry up for a couple hours until a tow truck came and pulled the guy out. Then they had to fix the board that broke so no one else would get stuck. I still can picture how shakey those boards were.

to Dave Gluck/the Wilson Line ran to Riverview Beach in New Jersey (Pennsville or Pennsgrove) look at the TRANSPORTATION SECTION on this web site. Many ,years ago a group of us from Essington,Pa went there with a school group,we decided to catch the LATE BOAT that day.we watched the boat go ,and decided to go back for more rides, only to find out, THAT WAS THE LAST BOAT.One of the gang called home, and his father was coming down to get us. His dad had a two door Mercury(49 or 50) JAMES DEAN TYPE CAR,about 6 or 8 of us climbed in the back,(no i don't know how until this day),i had two people sitting on me. Off we went, when we got to the Chester Ferry,we all got out to stetch our legs,AND a guy in the car in front of us ,watched us crawl out.We heard him say to his wife"OH MY GOD LOOK AT ALL THE KIDS THAT GUY HAS,END OF STORY.

Hi Linda, John and everyone... I'm glad Janet remembers me. My last name is April. What is she doing these days??. I'm married and have two grown children. I live in Delaware and my parents still live in Sun Village. I loved Jefferis. It was by far my favorite school. I never had Miss Miles as a teacher, but I remember her being there when I was in Kindergarten. The only thing is I thought her name was "Miss SMILES". An honest mistake. Linda, I do remember the Hoagie shop (who doesn't?). Maybe I did see you working there. Linda, ask Janet if she remembers Miss Haven, the teacher we had for First grade. The class picture I have has Janet in it, Debbie Lotman, Judy Elliott, Alice Clendenning, Laura Glatts, Sandy Blythe, Gail Wimmer, Gary Dickens, Danny Seaman, Robin Nichols and Joey Fields..among others. Take care everyone..Sal

All the talk last week, with these "scam" letters coming to some of our people here on this site, I did a little research of this particular scam. It has been going on since around 1998. It is being handled by the Treasury Dept. It is called the Nigerian 419 scam. They say on their site, if you have not suffered any lose, send them a copy of the letter. e-mail address is " 419fcd@usss.treas.gov". They get so many of these letters, don't expect a reply. They just recently arrested 22 of these Nigerians, but say the scam is wide spread. So use this information as you see fit. I got 3 letters already this week, the latest at 12:30am tonight & using a church as the reason for the fraud. Regards, Mike...

I remember playing soldiers in and on the garages behind my uncles house on 20th and Madison Ave. Mr Shockley use to yell at us all the time to get off the garages as they were falling apart and dangerous. My uncle also had a big garage that was falling apart. We used it for our clubhouse and planned attacks on the enemy.

To Martha Brush Bauer: I think I remember your parents when they lived in the apartment on 24th Street. The man's name was Paul Brush. I lived in the red brick twin houses behind the apartments where your parents' lived. My house was on Providence Avenue and our back yard backed up to Mr. Brush's garden. My brothers and sisters and our next door neighbors would always go up and visit Mr. Brush. We would go up the hill in our back yard and climb the fence to his garden if we saw him out there. He used to cut us his flowers from his garden to take home to our mom's. He always grew zinias and he would let you pick the ones that you wanted and then cut them for you. I also used to eat the fresh parsley out of his garden. I think his wife's name was Martha, like you. She always had candy for us. They were the only people we knew who lived in those apartments. We used to ride our bikes in the alley behind the apartments where they lived. We called that whole area "Mr. Brush's." I think these people must have been your parents. They were very nice and thanks for reminding me about them. It's a good memory.

I grew up on 2lst St. just off Providence Road. These were "twins" from our house west, but the homes on Providence were doctors, lawyers and indian chiefs. Mcclure's property was across the street. Their empty lot was given to local residents for victory gardens during WW11. My father and a local genteleman competed for the tidiest and most productive gardens. The Wetherill estate was catycorner from us. It took up the entire block. At Halloween children were invited in for ice cream cups. That was as close as I ever got to their homestead. The bus from 69th Street to Chester ran close by and that's what I took to get to school. No school buses in those days. Most of us would bus it to downtown Chester and then walk "up" to the High School. Of course, we walked to grade school and Jr. High - Wetherill and Smedley. I had a friend blocks away near Chester Park. Together we would walk up to Parkside and, if we had some change, visit the drugstore/soda fountain. But the best of them was next door to the Boyd Theater. That was a gathering for (particularly girls) to meet the opposite sex (PMC cadets) At that time, PMC cadets were not supposed to date "below the tracks", so several of my friends had to fudge where they lived. How quaint that seems now. Downtown Chester was a thriving productive city in those days. My parents moved to an apartment on 24th st. and lived there until their death in the 70's.

I am trying to help my dad locate an old friend who went to Ridley Twp HS and worked for First Pennsylvania Bank in Philadelphia from about 1955-1962. She graduated in 1955 from RTHS. Her name was Carol Wilkinson and she would have been approximately 18 in 1955. Does anyone know of her? I am trying to find out her married last name and/or her email address. Any information would be appreciated.

RE: Nite Riders Polka Band...I am sorry to say that Nick died last year. A great guy, the best. He was the drummer for the Band. Very active in Veterans programs in Chester all his life. Served in WWII and has been mentioned in many of Ed Gebharts columns. Well deserved mention from Ed. G. Always a happy go lucky man, a joy to be in his company.

Sammy S. is still alive and well. Still looks as young as he did way back then.. He plays the accordian. Also a Vet of WWII and written up in the Delco times several years ago as a feature story. A graduate of CHS. Sam is one heck of a great guy..

Can picture all at the picnic grove in my minds memory bank as a child. Sunday polka dances. Great family fun.

J. Lewis Crozier Library 3rd and Jeffrey Street Chester, Pennsylvania

My grandmother, Lelia Ridgeway, was the children’s librarian at the J. Lewis Crozier Library - West Branch from 1935 to 1965 (estimated). She continued with the library when it was moved to the Deshong building on Edgmont Avenue and retired around 1976. While a student at Dewey Mann Junior High School (Mr Vaul, Principal), I remember doing my homework and research at the adjacent library and feeling proud that my grandmother, Mrs. Ridgeway, was the librarian. As grandson, I took the liberty to explore the library to include the basement. The remains of jail cells stood among piles of coal stored for the furnace. Mrs. Ridgeway scheduled classes from nearby elementary schools to tour the library and lean how to use the card catalog and other library resources. I can still hear her admonish children for dirty hands and chewing gum. The library had closely spaced large windows on all sides allowing natural light to bathe the large room, free of partitions. Display cabinets between the windows housed plastic models of airplanes, cars, and boats – mostly military.

Miss Anna Hannum was the librarian for adults located on the first floor. At fifty-cents an hour, my first job was shelving books in the J.Lewis Crozier Library-West Branch. I can vividly recall the sturdy oak tables and chairs on both floors. The hardwood floors emitted a strong aroma of oil-soaked wood. An old “Regulator” clock moved ever so slowly to my quitting time of 8:00 p.m. The first floor (adult library) desk was situated behind a banister railing to the left of the front entrance. On the desk was a 4 X 18 inch rectangular box used to file cards for books checked out of the library. An Underwood Typewriter, protected by a clear plastic cover, was used to type new cards and library correspondence.

Donna, your recollections are sure a lot like mine. When the "out-of-towners" came thru Chester and started the riots thats when everything became a color. Blacks & whites did not have "problems" with each other till the 60's, I remember fondly being among "colored" people and having good times, the young generation said black but the oldsters didn't. The world is in much the same state as it was back then, we have not come too far. Sad.

Jack, thank you for those kind words and happy recollections. Newt was an all around good athlete and a very fine man. I have been charmed, enlightened and amused by the remembrances of the Chesterites who communicate on another of John's wonderful sites. But one doesn't have to be from Chester to have vivid memories of your fair city. As a young child in the early 50's my mother took me, and each of my siblings, shopping for all the necessities of life at Sears, Weinbergs (?)McCory's..... She'd park the station wagon somewhere around 6th and Edgemont then traipse the poor unfortunate child of the day up and down Edgemont, in and out of every store, especially those that had Sale signs in the window. If we were good little troopers there might be a hot dog or two at Johnny's doggie shop at the end of the shopping spree. I hated shopping but loved the excursions for all different reasons. Unlike Trainer, who's "characters" were only eccentric through word of mouth, the Chester excursion offered me the experience of interacting with industrious people who's physical disabilities rarely impeded them in their entreprenuership. There was Jimmy who's legs were crippled and atrophied, yet he continued to make a living hawking his wares on the street, and decidedly ignoring the ignorant stares and comments of a few obnoxious souls who just had to make comments regarding his wheeled board or his dimutive stature. I also remember a blind man who used music, songs and good nature to entice listeners to spare a little change so he could provide his own keep. In many ways I believe that this was when the "Nurse" which i later became, began to well up in my soul. My grandfather (Newt Myers, an avid bowler) chose to remain in Chester until the end of his life in 1972. In the early 50's he lived on the west end around 3rd St. and it was there that I got to see and SMELL the wonderful cultures. To visit him was a holiday for my nose! The scent of cabbage filled the air in the Polish part of the town, and sauces laden with garlic were just around the corner wafting out the doors of the Italian homesteads. I could tell when I was getting close to his home by the change of spices and herbs that permeated the air. By the time I was 10 or so, his neighborhood had many "colored" people in it. They always welcomed me lovingly when I visited and I was totally unaware of the separatism that prevailed, naive child that I was. They took me into their homes, hearts and church. So I felt safe and protected whenever I went to POP's bachelor pad. By the late 50's and early '60's the area had fallen into disrepair, as so many other post industrial cities were doing all over the U.S., and life was just a hair too dangerous for a man in his 60's. So POP moved to McCafferty village and my overnight visits ceased since I was now deemed old enough to care for myself. By 1964 the heart of Chester's shopping district was run down, but still trudging along. I worked in Sears and Woolworths during the years of the Civil Rights marches and watched dumbfoundedly as STRANGERS carried banners and chanted slogans up and down Edgemont Ave. Many of our friends and acquaintances from POP's old neighborhood were as mystified as I that these STRANGERS were causing such a rucus. When a shoving match escalated into a small riot in front of the doors at Woolworth's I pulled a child and his grandmother inside, all the while she cried "who are they, I don't know anyone of them except that Stanley Branch, that n.....r troublemaker". As tears rolled down her dark brown cheeks she wrapped her grandson in her arms and rocked him gently. When I asked her if she was alright she said "We be fine, but this be the start of hell here today" Although I marched in later Civil Rights demonstrations, I hated the leaders that day for the pain I saw in that woman's face. She had a glimpse of the future and it terrified her. But there are many more happy memories made than sad ones. There were the Great Leopard saturday skate sessions, Chester park and the July 4th festivities (as well as great parking spots), Gino's (beginning of the Colonels KFC) carnivals and circus tents, museums and monuments, the interesting folks at the bus stops and train station, and the Stanley, State, Mack and Lyric theatres to while away a saturday or sunday afternoon. And there were smiles and helpful police and friendly strangers. I hope and pray that the people of Chester are seeing those smiles now because today is their "good ol' days"

I get as many as 3 or 4 a week. My opinion is they are scam artist trying to get your bank account number, so they can rip you off. You will notice on every one they ask for an account number to make a deposit in. Once they have your account number, by-by funds.

I recently sent a response because someone was asking about Chick Murray from Chester. While on vacation I checked with a relative about him going to Salesianum(hope this is the correct spelling) in Delaware. Well I found out I was wrong. So, I'm making a correct statement. Chick went to Chester High and from what I hear he really was a great athelete. If he were alive today he'd be around 85-86. I knew the info about the USS JUNEAU was correct and that he did die with the famous (5) Sullivan Brothers' only because that was an important part of our family history. So I apologize for the error....Marie

Kathy, No the family is out of the business. Ed was forced out of business by ARCO because he did not sell enough gas. He turned it into a service station only. But when he (Ed) had a heart attack he closed it, has to be 15 years ago. I saw Kenny and his wife Kathy at a doctors office 2 years ago, he works for the Delaware county daily times as a mechanic. I haven't seen Peggy or Dave in quite a while.

I don't know if Kathy was inquiring about ED'S ARCO or not....I remember very well when Steve Snyder was shot during the robbery. Ed Dudek and family (Edie, along with the step children Peggy, Kenny, and Dave Brown) were good friends of mine. I also worked at the gas station with Kenny for about 2 years, oh and don't let me forget the dog. We had some good times at that gas station. I remember Joe Klecko use to come down all the time to get his car worked on. We would throw the football around in front of the station. Hank the bookie would come in and get his car filled up, he would always give me a $5.00 tip. Ed passed away a few years ago and the rest of the family is still around.

Goodbye to Ray Agent. But more importantly, my condolences to Marie, his wife, to whom he devoted the last years of his life, while he himself suffered from ill health and also to his mother, who has outlived her beloved and devoted son. No matter how much we age, to outlive your child is devastating.

Ray sent me a picture of him (age 10 or so)in his boy scout's uniform about a year ago, with the words "Be Prepared" on it. Later, he sent me one sitting in his easy chair with "Not Prepared" written on it. I think on his departure from this earth, he was "prepared" - he was wise in these areas.

Ray and I had our differences, but we knew each other from the age of 10 living in Buckman Village and attending Resurrection. Our mothers also knew and worked together at Whelans in the late 40‘s. Ray emailed me with his mother’s fond memories of my mother. We had many emails back and forth recalling our childhood memories and our adult disagreements. He told me at one time that because Mary McGonigle (now deceased also) and I were taller than Ray during our school years, his mother asked Mary and me to “look after him.”

Ray proved later on that he did not need anyone to “look after him”. He went on to higher schooling, spent time in the service of his country, married his soul-mate, was successful in the business world and contributed much to his community, church, friends and family. I am especially pleased that I was able to introduce him to Harvey, Caroline, Florence and Frank, whose friendship he enjoyed to the very end and with whom he shared many good times.

Even though we had serious disagreements, we respected each others opinions and actually enjoyed the debate. If you can’t argue intelligently, you’re not exercising your brain. We always miss the ones we love, but we also miss those with whom we disagree (“a difference of opinion.”); especially if we share the same roots; those with whom we “grew up” - that’s what “growing up” means. Each and every one of us has an indelible stamp on us of the names of the people we “grew up” with (those who helped us develop our character, our sense of who we were). The teachings of every friend’s parents were also instilled in us - like a rolling stone - it is passed on - accepted and/or unaccepted. We are each one a part of the other. If there is no one to argue with, how can we know whether we are right or wrong? We may wander off angry, but it still gives us “food for thought.”

So, I have lost another part of me that I will miss and although Ray threatened to have his ghost visit and scare the hell out of me; I doubt that will happen. He knows he can’t scare me - just argue with me. Bring it on, Ray, I’d love to argue with you once again. In the meantime, spread your wings over Marie and your Mother until you are all together once again.

To Ray’s good friends: Send prayers of understanding and peace of mind to Marie and Ray’s mother - I know they are hurting beyond our understanding.

Asking once again if anyone knew my grandparents, Clarence and Elsie Williams who lived across from St. James High School on 21st and upland streets. Or does anyone remember my mother Ruth Williams Christensen graduated Chester High in 1944. I attended Chester high in 1963 then moved to Wilmington, Delaware. Grandpop worked at the Baldwin Locomotive Plant, my mother at Sun Oil and Sharp and Dome, also Whelan's Drug store. She died in 1974.

I will try to write a girlhood memory about my Aunt May and Uncle Bill Canavan. They lived at 24th and edgmont all of the childhood life and adult life.Their was a garage on the corner which belonged to the family and plenty of propery around the old family hime. I remember going in this old house and having tea with Aubt May in her red teacups and saucers, them we would go in the dining room, which was all literary writings, her brother my Uncle Bill was paralyzed from the waist down, and in a wheel chair. My grandfather built him a ramp to get in and exercisor to strenghen is arms and move him like he was walking. He gave me two novels to read, Uncle Tom's Cabin and a book about the history of France, but the walls were full. And then into the little parlor, with the red velvet sofa and chairs and antique desk and chair and beautiful lamps, My Uncle Bill was a professor at theUniversity of Oklahoma. He taught medicine. When they both passed away, everything was sold and put into the estate. The family had a chance to purchase what they wanted. Their was a marble slab at the end of the rain gitter, we still have that to this day. Many people knew the Canavan family,May and Bill, and Thomas. and Alan. All master mechanics, and Thos. was also a top carpenter and Alan also a mechanic. Auntie May was always seen wearing her purple hat, purple coat and skirt and purple shoes, Many people knew them.

Raymond L Agent:

With much saddness I write here today about a former Chester man who has left us. Ray was a 1950 Graduate of Saint James, and entered there from REZ, Chester, PA. Ray lived on Perkins Street in the West End of Chester.

Ray added many memories to OLDCHESTERPA and through OLDCHESTER was in contact with many old and new friends.

Ray will be missed by all of us who knew him and cherished him as a friend. I for one will remember him with a smile the picture of Ray his wife Marie and Harvey at the OldChesterPa fall reunion. It brought two new friends together in a handshake and was representative of what OLDCHESTERPA is all about.

Ray you will be missed by Many.

To Marie and Sue..my heart to yours...

Here's a summer memory Remember how after the rain storms the corner storm drains would back up. All the kids in the neighborhood would come down to the corners of Curry and Valclain because that was the deepest one. It would spread out across the whole street. We all thought it was like a lake. Speaking of lakes, when we would have severe storms or a hurricane the ball feild would fill up now that was a lake. I remember my brother taking me out to right feild one time, i was so scared i would drown. But the whole feild was only 3 or 4 feet deep. But i really thought it was like a lake and deep.

Does anyone know Clarence F. Williams and Elsie? They lived at 122 E. 21 st and upland st. He worked at Baldwin Locomotive in the 40's and 50's, also worked on cars at a garage on 21st street in the alley. My grandparents lived there with me Iris Christensen. I move to Delaware after going to Chester High. They stayed until he died in 1964 and my grandmother in 1974. My mother Ruth worked at Sharp and Dome they made polio vacine. Also Marcus Hook at Sun Oil for a while, then she moved to Wilmington, Del. where she lived until her death in 1973. I also went to Wetherill and Smedley and have many photos from those schools. I miss those steak sandwiches from Sun Village. Also, Chester Park where I had my first kiss. Love to hear from anyone who has rememberances from those times. Iris

A lot from Sun Village. Sally...I'd like to send the picture to you, but it's a class picture and it's small. I'm not sure if it will scan very well. I'll see what I can do.

Duffy, I don't know why you dreamed about her. Maybe because she was a cheerleader and an officer as the other poster wrote. Or maybe you remembered how nice she was or her exotic name. Whatever the case, she represented a friend or acquaintance from your past who came up in your subconscious since Old Chester was on your mind.

As far as your nightmares are concerned, I could give it a try. Just remember (if you can while you are in a dream state) that you can do anything in your dreams. You have the power to chase the monsters away. Believe it or not, sometimes they have a message for you. Approach them and ask them. It happened to me. Once you begin to analyze your dreams, there's no stopping you from discovering many things about yourself and your creativity.

Pleasant dreams!

This is for Duffy - a dream interpretation.

The fact that you dreamt of a former friend from school is a good one. You've been reading here and thinking about your past. Your dream also had other friends that you had a connection with. You felt at ease with them and were happy - a sign of your present.

Going to her home appears as a sign of welcome and, again, friendship. The huge open room full of trees, tables, and people indicate a connection to things that are peaceful. Comradarie, nature, socializing.

Your reminiscing about your past in Chester brings you these feelings. It's a good dream and shows you the connection you have with your past and symbolizes what is important in your life.

Keep dreaming. In our dream state, we are so powerful. Keep a dream journal as it can relate to issues in your present day life. You can even solve problems in your dreams. Believe me. There's nothing wrong with being a dreamer. People have gotten messages, answers, and ideas for inventions in their dreams.

Brian,

My grandfather (Ed Lejman) use to take my brother and I when we were kids to St. Hedwig's CC club to play pool. The pool table was upstairs. It was a very old pool table, they had the wire running with I believe little balls on them to keep score. I remember looking out the windows and watching the trains go by. This was during the 60's. My grandfather told us all about the dances that use to be held at the club when he was young. I also remember getting pizza at the bar (Highland Garden Cafe)on Highland Ave across from Felton Fire Company.

John Bullock has given us this opportunity to remember OLDCHESTERPA and the families and people that made it the great place to have lived...Many people have contributed to the site with pictures, memories and other treasures. Were it not for John and his original Quest to search his family roots, many great photos of Chester History would have been lost to our generation and to future generations. Now here's one you're not going to believe but it's true! I had a dream the other night and in the dream was a girl from CHS in the '50s named Batya Pios (or something like that). I remember the girl but only vaguely and didn't really know her well. In the dream, (not sure whether it was situated in the '50s or the present), some of us went to her house. It was a large luxurious house with a huge room--like an atrium, with trees growing and chairs and tables like a cafe with some people sitting around them. Now, can anytone tell me who that girl was? (not sure of the correct spelling of her name) What did she do at CHS? And what does my dream Mean?

John has introduced a area dedicated to the WWII Vet. Just go to the Whats New section.

Many VETS from WWII (male and female) are still living, they might want their own story here. Let them know about it.

For those of us that have deceased members that served in the Armed Service this is a opportunity to add their memory to local history.

There are many people that do not use the computer among those we know. Perhaps they would like a name added.

I came across this site while doing some genealogy research. I was born in Chester Hospital in 1944, but my family lived across the state line in Claymont, Delaware. My father was born and raised in Chester and my mother and her family lived in Chester for a time. My fondest memories are shopping with my mother at Weinberg's Dept. Store and Loft's candies on many a Saturday. I took dancing lessons on Saturday mornings and then we had hot roast beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes at the Rainbow Diner. Those were the days! Names I am researching are MELVILLE and BOYER from Delaware Co. I had a great grandfather that was a city editor of the Chester Times newspaper, and he was an alderman from the 4th Ward of Chester. His name was Charles King Melville. His son Edgar Dean Melville was a reporter for the paper, also. If any one knows any history on him I would appreciate a contact. This is a great site---keep up the good work. Sincerely, Janice

This is for those who are inquiring about Chick Murray. My Dad's first cousin was Albert Chick Murray. He went to Rez and then to Saliesianum (I sure hope that's the way it's spelled) in Delaware. He was born in 1918, my Dad in 1919. He was a really good athlete. He was in the Navy and was killed during the war on the USS JUNEAU with the five Sullivan brothers. Before he left he and my Dad were on R&R in Hawaii and he asked my Dad to come onto his ship. My Dad's Captain refused for this time but said once they got back, he could go. Everyone know the story that the USS JUNEAU sunk. My Dad was the first one to know what happened to his ship. Chick's mother was Marie Borcky Murray, she was my grandfather's sister. Also related are all of those Borcky kids who went to Chi and did very well in sports. Their grandfather was also Mrs. Murray's brother and my grandfather's too. Chick wasn't related to Dr. Murray. They lived at 10th and Booth Street across from the village. They lived near the Koperna family. I wish Ed Gebhart would do a story on him. Everyone in our family is proud to have had him as our cousin, especially around the 4th of July and Veteran's Day.

John,

Kathy was right on for the rules for box hockey, each player would have to hit the ground on their side of the box and then hit the opponents stick, after the third time you would go for the ball that sat on the middle divider, you could also call "tricks" and hit the side of the hockey box twice, after the first time each player hit stick and go right for the ball. You were also allowed to flip the ball from one side to the other, if it went out you place it back where it was, you were also allowed to move it the length of the blade away from side or you could wack the side of the box. Hope this helps ... it really was alot of fun and I hope it wasn't me that hit Kathy, I'm sure it was a just an accident. They also had a hockey box and good old Trainer Pool up by the food stand, the asphalt really got hot. You were right they were field hockey sticks.

To Dave and Lee: Yes, Lee, I recall now our discussion regarding Dr. Murray's family. If Chick graduated CHS in '42 but lived in the same vicinity as the Dr. Murray's family I knew on Highland Ave., it's a possibility that Chick was relative of Dr. Murray. As I think I said before, Chick would have been 8 years older than me and Frank. But as close as we all were, I'm sure we would have known that Frank and Tom's older brother died in WW11. We all knew about the McGinn family's oldest son, so, somehow I think we would have know about Frank's older brother.

I am now wondering whose son Chick (Albert) was. Did you ever get the names of his parents? The entire Murray family was a credit to the town and now we know about "Chick" who was also on the ship that went down with the Sullivan Brothers (that story still brings tears to my eyes). How the mother lived through the loss of her five "fighting Sullivans" shows great faith and tremendous strength - while her heart broke every day upon wakening.

I believe the Sullivan family was from Ohio. My family also migrated from Ohio to Penna. as did so many others - so the Irish are very much connected in both states.

But Dr. Murray on Highland Ave. had only three children (to my knowledge). I really thank Dave for remembering Phyllis because I could not remember her first name. I knew her very well though because she was the coach of our girls' basketball team when I was at Rez (7th & 8th grades) - and as the boys said, she was a "knock out" a really beautiful girl.

Now her two younger brothers were Francis (in my grade at Rez) and Thomas (one year older). Thomas is now deceased after having married and his wife presenting with him with 8!!!!! daughters, and as far as I know Frank is still alive and I saw him when I was back home in '80. He was managing a grocery store.

I would now like to know who the other Dr. Murray was (bet they were related in some manner). Also, it's a joy to have we old folks bring back memories, and even though it may take a few months, to have the ones we're not sure of, clarified.

Thank you both, Dave and Lee.

Hello all!

I have never lived in Chester but my mother (Nancy Wood CHS '55) and her family grew up there. I've found some great pictures of some of them, including one of my grandfather with the Postal Clerks in 1938, and my aunt and uncles in school pictures. It's been interesting to look through the site and get a sense of where my relatives grew up. Thanks!

To Pat McFadden.... Regarding the late "Chick" Murray who was lost on the USS Juneau in November. My good friend John Malick (George's older brother) identifies "Chick" as Albert Murray from the West End, he thinks around 10th and Booth. Albert Murray graduated CHS in Feb 1942 and went right into the Navy. Oddly enough, the USS Juneau was christened in Feb of 1942. The Juneau went down near Guadacanal. Also on that ship were the five Sullivan brothers and the four Rogers brothers. The military archives lists a memorial cemetery to that crew in Manila, Philippines. I had to track this info down because I went for a lonnnng time thinking that "Chick" was Dr. Murray's son from Ninth and Highland.

High School Reunion

Every ten years, as summertime nears, An announcement arrives in the mail, "A reunion is planned; it'll be really grand; Make plans to attend without fail.

I'll never forget the first time we met; We tried so hard to impress. We drove fancy cars, smoked big cigars, And wore our most elegant dress.

It was quite an affair; the whole class was there. It was held at a fancy hotel. We wined, and we dined, and we acted refined, And everyone thought it was swell.

The men all conversed about who had been first To achieve great fortune and fame. Meanwhile, their spouses described their fine houses And how beautiful their children became.

The homecoming queen, who once had been lean, Now weighed in at one-ninety-six. The jocks who were there had all lost their hair, And the cheerleaders could no longer do kicks.

No one had heard about the class nerd Who'd guided a spacecraft to the moon; Or poor little Jane, who's always been plain; She married a shipping tycoon.

The boy we'd decreed "most apt to succeed" Was serving ten years in the pen, While the one voted "least" now was a priest; Just shows you can be wrong now and then.

They awarded a prize to one of the guys Who seemed to have aged the least. Another was given to the grad who had driven The farthest to attend the feast.

They took a class picture, a curious mixture Of beehives, crew cuts and wide ties. Tall, short, or skinny, the style was the mini; You never saw so many thighs.

At our next get-together, no one cared whether They impressed their classmates or not. The mood was informal, a whole lot more normal; By this time we'd all gone to pot.

It was held out-of-doors, at the lake shores; We ate hamburgers, coleslaw, and beans. Then most of us lay around in the shade, In our comfortable T-shirts and jeans.

By the fortieth year, it was abundantly clear, We were definitely over the hill. Those who weren't dead had to crawl out of bed, And be home in time for their pill.

And now I can't wait; they've set the date; Our fiftieth is coming, I'm told. It should be a ball, they've rented a hall At the Shady Rest Home for the old.

Repairs have been made on my hearing aid; My pacemaker's been turned up on high. My wheelchair is oiled, and my teeth have been boiled; And I've bought a new wig and glass eye.

I'm feeling quite hearty, and I'm ready to party;. I'm gonna dance 'til dawn's early light. It'll be lots of fun; I just hope that there's one Other person who can make it that night.

Hi John Did you get my info about Alan Larson?? He's living in Atlanta Ga. I also remember the Rounds family. I especially remember Sally and Billy. I heard from Sally briefly a few months ago.

Here' another memory for you. Do you remember the garages on Thomas St. at the end of Baldwin St. We used to climb onto the roof and play army (Combat was one of our favorite TV shows at the time). We used to have the helmets, toy guns, canteens..the whole works. If we were pretending to be shot, we only had to play dead for 30 seconds., then we'd come back to life as another soldier. If we didn't have toy guns, we'd use sticks. We even used our voices to make the sounds of machine guns.

The row of garages ran nearly to ninth st. We used to jump off that end of the row and fall into the soft grass below. We could usually play there for about a half hour before somebody would chase us away.

Thanks for the update on the Glatts family. I'm sorry to hear about Glenn. If you talk to Laura, tell her I said hello. I have a class picture from first grade in Jefferis with her in it. She may not even remember me.

I also remember playing box hockey. When we played, we didn't use any rules. I think we just tried to get the ball through the "rat holes". I remember playing it at Washington Park on Melrose Ave.

I have another memory from working for Eddie Dodds at Ryans store. I remember learing a little about cutting meat. One of his sons, Larry Dodds, I believe was a butcher for A&P at the time, and showed me a few things. How to cut pork chops, steaks and things. However, I made a mistake while slicing lunchmeat one time. I remember slicing the top of my right thumb with the slicing machine, while I was cutting hard salami. It wasn't a real bad cut, butI remember Mr. Dodds being very concerned about it.

As I've said before, he was a wonderful person to work for. I didn't know first hand about his commitment to sports, but by talking to people, I got a very good picture of how popular this man was with many Sun Village residents. Everyone, it seems, thought highly of him. And that includes me.

JOHN:

Box hockey, I remember playing that at Comisiak Park on 4th street in Chester, in fact thats where I got my first stitches, Michael and Patrick Shea were playing (THey were cuties) and the girls were watching and probably making gymp keychains with 4 strands of plastic coated ribbon. Anyway it went hockey one two three and they tried to get it in the others box which was separated by the wood in the middle. Perhaps Michael from Chantilly Virginia can add to this... ??? The stitches finally healed, and I don't even think the boys noticed, they were into pinball, shuffleboard or older stuff by then. But, it was still a great place to grow up and we did have a lot of fun.

Thank you for the memory!

Need help as soon as possible for those of you who played box hockey at the city playgrounds in the 50's and 60's. The box was approx.10ft. in length and 4ft. wide and there was a board in the center of the box,the board in the center had two rat holes to knock the ball thru and the end boards had one rat hole to knock the ball thru,in the beginning you would place the wood ball in a groove on top of the center board, players would stand across from each other with I believe were field hockey sticks and would touch there sticks three times on the third time you would attempt to knock the ball in opponents side of the box and out of his rat hole if you did you won the game. I can't remember if you kept hitting the ball or if you and your opponet took turns hitting the ball,it was great fun though. If you can add anything to this please do so.

For the past two years, I have noticed many posts regarding the Dodds family. I too knew members of that family at CHS - namely Jake Dodds who was an outstanding athlete and one of the nicest guys in the world at CHS and he married one of my best friends at the time, Lillian “Nunny” Ross. I also knew (but not as well) Pat Dodds who was another great athlete at CHS. I did not realize at the time I new Nunny and Jake and Pat that there were so many siblings and it appears, from all the posts I have read here that practically every member of that family was an outstanding athlete. The father of this great athletic family had to be one of the most outstanding members of the Chester community to instill such admirable sportsmanship and good family qualities in all his children - sons and daughters, alike. Apparently, he encouraged (never discouraged) the girls in his family too. What a guy!

For those of you who knew members of this family personally, it would be a great contribution to John’s site to tell what you know about this great dad (let’s not forget Mother) and what he did to make his children achieve honors in sports, along with being outstanding citizens of old Chester. This is the type of interest this site is all about. I feel the Dodds family was and still is an important part of Chester’s history (going back at least 75 years that I know of and would love to know more). When you start to post about a member of that family, instead of saying what a “nice guy” or something similar, post what was so nice about him/her.

I personally am very interested in what made the children of the Dodds family such achievers in the sports world. If you know, tell us about them. For instance, was Mr. or Mrs. Dodds, a great athlete? Don’t let their story slip through the cracks of history, because too many stories of too many great families already have.

The Dodds family has been a part of Chester’s history for a long time now. I would love to know the history of Jake and Pat Dodds’ father and mother. With all those children being such great athletes, I’d bet it would even make a wonderful movie.

Just asking if the same Mr. Dodds that you all are talking about who owned Ryan's is any relation to a couple of boys that I went to school with. Is he related to Donny & Keith (Pickle) Dodds from Sun Hill from the 70-80's?

Just wandering if there is any connection there. The Dodds boys were very good athletes & my brother Rick went to STJ with Donny and also played ball on the Lord's baseball team in Sun Village together back in the 70's.

Anyone with info, please let me know so I can pass on to my brother.

Thanks

Mary Lou,

Yes Betsy lives in Lancaster Pa. She lives there I believe with her daughter. I do remember Betsy's Hillman too. I never even heard of one before then. I just thought it was neat to have a friend who had an older sister who DROVE.

Betsy, as you may know was (and still is) a huge Beatles fan. She told me the story of how she and Jackie went to the Chester Pike drive in to see "A Hard days Night" and they recorded the sound from one of those speakers you hang on your window. After that they would drive to Bullens Lane every night the movie played and syncronized the sound from the tape with the picture they could see from the Bullens Lane, and watched the movie.

I'll let you know as soon as I find out where Jackie lives.

Iremeber Mrs Larson fondly, she was my Girl Scout Leader in Brownies and she always did neat projects. I use to sit in here living room every Am waiting for Jackie to walk to school. When we were in High school Betsy had a little Red Hillman she would drive us to school in.

Betsy lives in Lancaster, Nancy lives in southern Maryland. I didn't find out where Jackie lives but I will. I'll be talking to Mrs. Larson again soon. She remembers you, Mary Lou, very well.

Thanks for the update on The Glatts family. Someone mentioned Laura's brother died. Was his name George??

I also had to check in on the memory of Mr. Dodds. You are right , he was a great man in Sun Village. I had the oportunity to work for him in the early 70's at Ryan's store. People tell me that he spoke highly of me to them. If that is true, I am truly honored. I do know that I earned his trust and he allowed me to lock up the store in the evening. I really enjoyed they years I worked for Mr. Dodds. I hope he enjoyed having me there.
