Sad to report the passing of my uncle, Milton Berman at the age of 77. Passed away yesterday. Was living in Florida. Milton had 3 children...Mark, Ellen and Robin. Milton was a friend to all and a great athlete back in his day. Very sad time in the Berman/Burman family.

You can reach my dad, Harvey, at the pharmacy for more information.

Sorry to report this news--

Can’t believe that in 9 days OLDCHESTERPA will be holding its fall “get together.” Wow, where has the year gone? John has been busy getting all the details in place for a super memory day about “Chester on the Delaware”.

Are yea planning to come. I hope so. You see, without you, there would be no OLDCHESTERPA. And frankly, I, like so many others can’t wait to see the pamplet John plans to hand out. No, have not seen it. I think at this very moment John is wearing his fingers to the bone putting them all together. :0)

Soooo in case your new to the NEWSSTAND let me tell you what is planned, and for those of you that are not, just a reminder to mark your calendars for OCTOBER 4TH at Asbury. http://www.oldchesterpa.com/asburyame.htm

The day will begin promptly at 12 noon in the church sanctuary. with the Chester High JROTC MARINE Color Guard Presenting the Colors, the Pledge of Allegiance & National Anthem followed by:

The Welcome from Mayor Wendell N. Butler, Jr., Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland and Sen. Dominic F. Pileggi.

A Time to Remember (in memory of those no longer with us)

Introduction of Exhibitors

And an announcement from our host (John Bullock) regarding the date and location for next year’s reunion. (Just a thought, for those planning their school reunions, think about the same weekend. This way those that are from out of town can attend the OLDCHESTERPA’s event too.)

Now lets talk food… planning to join old friends afterward or don’t feel like going home and dragging the pots and pans out to cook, go no further. The congregation will be offering a full meal so why not skip lunch and eat there. What a convince. More time to talk about old times with old friends. Plus eating there will be helping the congregation raise some funds. I am sure when John gets the menu and information he will update the NEWSSTAND. So don’t forget…plan dinner at “La Café Asbury on the Providence” [Editor's note: Menu will be wings, potato salad, hot dogs, hamburgers and beverage for about $4.]

I hope I haven’t bent your ear… …. But I don’t want to close this reminder without a mention that again The Salvation Army Chester Corps & Asbury AME Mission Society will have collection containers available for those of you that would like to share a "tradition of giving." It was part of the Chester we knew, and has become a part of our “Get –Together”. Last year the “OLDCHESTERPA.com” family did not forget the needs of these organizations.

They will appreciate any thing you can bring, especially: New winter clothes (gloves, caps, underwear, socks, etc.) School supplies (pencils, crayons, note books, etc.) Small hotel sample soaps, shampoo, etc. for homeless shelter

That’s it folks…..

Well Hello from "Cajun Country". I graduated from Chester High in Jun of 1980, and went in the military a year later. I've just retired at over 22 years. I attained the rank of MSG and am currently living here in Alexandria with my wife of 18 years and 3 children, ages: 16, 12, and 9. I've started working with the VA Administration here with the Automation Department. I graduated from Central Texas college in 1992 with a BS in Information Technology and am a recent graduate of Harcourt Learning center with a diploma in PC Repair. I'm also pursuing my certification in IT. It's so nice to have a site dedicated for the one place that has truly inspired me to reach for the stars.

Does anyone remember the little meat market on 8th St. on the east side around the corner from Pete's little store? Tony and Tilly were husband and wife and they owned and ran it. They were such nice people. Just thought they should be remembered. I think they had 2 sons. They sold fresh meat and lunch meat.

What's happened to Dave Burman's Clipper Basketball web site? It was certainly a most comprehensive in print history of any school or college sport. It will be missed if it is gone.

Hello Old Chester, Your guestbook put a smile on my face and the memories came flooding back. I remember being in kindergarten at Jeffries school when the principal came over the speaker and said that President JFK had been shot. Grade school was St Roses, Eddystone. Our class had to be the most rambunctious ever. (we spent almost everyday after school-and we were in the 4th grade). St James was the best four years of education and getting ready for the real world. Growing up in Sun Village in the early 60's to late 70's- I wouldn't trade it for anything. I still run into people here in NJ who know Chester and Sun Village. Small World. If James Opdenaker Class of '76 reads this; get in touch with me!! (Lancaster ?)

Hi Folks, born and rasied on the East side of town, in the early forties. Grew up with the best bunch of guys from 7th. Crosby. Now to the my greusome discovery. The other day I was driving up Edgmount Ave. and I happened to stop by my favorite play ground, Deshong's Park. I spent half of my youth playing football, and baseball in there. As I pulled up to the rear of 11th street to park I could not believe what I saw. The old ball field looked like an over groun cow pasture, everything is gone. The bleachers are covered with trees, the basketball court, and tennis courts are compleately over groun with trees not grass, but trees. I worked my way to the street by the creek, unbelivable, nothing but a jungle, I counted 4 burnt out cars, and evey other bit of trash tou can think of. Anybody that shared a hard Sunday's football game with us old Crosbyites, you have got to take a trip to see, what was once a great place to hang out. YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYES.....

Thanks Be well Jim "Butch" Bailey

Bob, you are absolutely right, your girlfriend would have lost her baboushka. I'm a former Chesterite, lived on McIlvain Street in the East End. I've been living in VABeach since 1983. Isabel was a fierce storm. Lots of damage from downed trees and flooding. Fortunately, I did not experience any flooding where I live, but did see alot of downed trees. Isabel took a terrible toll on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I'm very thankful she was not anymore fierce that what she was !

Also being inducted into the Chester Hall-0f-Fame this November is Clipper great basketball star Danny Bartkow (Class of 1943). Dan and wife Vivian are living in Boca Raton, Florida.

Dan and I went to a Clipper game together back in 1996-97 season at the Clip Joint and we have a classic photo with me and him and another Clipper great Kenny Tate, who went on to have a marvelous career at Division-2 Edinboro (PA) College.

Dan will be attending his 60th CHS reunion next month then come back in early November for his induction. Dan already has been inducted into the Delaware County sports Hal-of-Fame back on Thursday April 16th, 1998 at the Ramada Inn in Essington. I came up for that one also!!!! Can't believe that was 6 years ago!!!!!!

God Bless

It's that time of the year again, yes I'm talking about my yearly visit to Dr Robbins office on 13th & Highland Ave. So, he could shove that hose up my nose and drain my sinuses :( Yes everyone I am an admitted seasonal allergy sufferer. But did I ever learn my lesson....NO, I still helped the city clean up the leaves that fell off the trees behind the community building and put them in a nice big pile, so that we could climb high up in the tree and jump into them.

I have created my own web site if anyone would like to see. http://home.comcast.net/~t9257

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr Harry Bomberger Jr. May God rest his soul. We were just writing about him and the terrific drug store that he had. My sister worked there for many years, he will be sadly missed but always remembered. Our condolences to his family.

Greetings of a peaceful and positive day! Pat, glad to hear from you as well. For a while I have just been reading (as stated previously) the memories and inquiries on the site. I always check in (visually) but not always verbally. It's amazing what one learns by listening and reading and absorbing what others have to contribute. Okay, I havent' had anything to add! BETTER! THERE! LOL! Not really, just pre-occupied. But as always the pleasure of hearing from P-MAC is as ever enlightening!

And your "very long post", well I stayed awake through the whole thing...as well as the second. And as you said, once again we so do agree as I with you on your posts. But it really has been about the money for quite sometime now. And it is unfortunate that the music industry became a dark hole for A-Americans back in the days of Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jackie Wilson, Eubie Blake, Sir Duke and many others. But there is no need to dive into the reasons why as they are apparent. Then, it became an issue for all races, sexes, ages etc. The business itself is the best. WHO DOESN'T LOVE MUSIC? I LOVE MUSIC! AND LAWD KNOWS I LOVE TO WATCH FRED ASTAIRE FLOAT ACROSS THE DANCE FLOOR! (THANK YOU TMC!)But, what used to be "music" have become the ramblings and "sampling" of new artists from those who knew and know what music is. These days, all singers sound alike! They have the same style and no creativity! And of course there are those "videos". Give me the good ole days of The Vandellas, Supremes, Temptations, Four Tops (yeah, I love MOTWOWN!). Now that was music! Give me some Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn and Charile Pride (What? You didn't think I liked C & W!?) I WAS BORN IN ALABAMA! I LOVE IT ALL. I hold no color to music....which has no color...no bounderies (for some!)

Pat you touched on so many things, and I know all about Mr. Blake (as he was so honored on Broadway by the late great Gregory Hines) and I had the honor and privelege to meet the late ETHEL WATERS!

I won't dwell on this subject too long, because I could go on, and on and on...(can't have that!)And P-Mac, I have not forgotten about my stories(and facts!) It is indeed still a part of my quest.

But right now, I am learning so much about places and businesses which I never knew existed in Chester....ie; FISHER TANK CO..... WATCH, READ AND LEARN....I AIN'T TOO OLD FOR THAT!

EMBRACE THE DAY BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE & GOODNIGHT!

Friends,

I'm saddened to report the passing of another of our Chester "family", Harry Bomberger, Jr..

Many of you have affectionately remembered Harry and "Bomberger's Drug Store" recently on these pages. Your recollections have certainly been a wonderful tribute to him and to his father who operated the store previously. Harry was also a long-time member of the Good Will Fire Company and served as Chester Fire Chief from 1956-1960. He and his wife Ann attended all of our first three "OldChesterPa.com Get-Togethers".

The only details I have at this time is that Rigby Funeral Home (Chadds Ford, PA) is handling the arrangements and that the funeral will be held this Thursday. Burial will be at Chester Rural Cemetery.

Check the top of our "What's New" page for more details as they become available.

John

Thanks Paul....Next time let me know when you’re in the area. Would love seeing you at one of the Fall reunions. Tell your brother Bill or Sally that if they drop in at Asbury to look me up, I'm not hard to find I'm the one with a camera glued to my eye...:)

Dave K. 1st….how about another story…its time for a good old fashion Halloween adventure. Or the cattail tales...

To all: if you haven’t marked your calendar for the (Chester Education Foundation Celebration September 19th) it can be found in the WHATS NEW section.

I've recently returned from my annual trip to Chester. Actually Linwood now as I have no relatives left in Chester. Not much to report from a physical standpoint. Chester appeared to be maintaining an upgraded standard of street cleanliness. The new Mccaffery Village project seems to have hit a standstill. This was more of a visit people trip. I discovered that an old classmate I haven't seen in about 50 years lived one street from my Brother Bill in Linwood. His name is Ken Burns. Actually we go back as far as Clayton School. He was at home when I knocked. I told him my name. He invited me in and we talked for over an hour. Visited another old friend Mary Lewis in Brookhaven. I was saddened to learn of the death of the former Leona Macielag. A very attractive and nice person Caroline... Sally said to say HELLO to you!

Thank you so very much Caroline! I found a picture of my great grandfather Charles K. Melville and his son Edgar D. Melville. In checking my genealogy notes, I found that Charles King was living in Philadelphia in 1880 and was an editor. In 1888 and 1889 he was listed in the Chester city directory as city editor of The Chester Times. In 1900 he and his son were listed in the census of Chester as journalists. In 1920 he was an Alderman in the 4th Wared of Chester; President in 1920 of The Delaware County Magistrates Association. I would really like to find out just who the jouralist "Melville King" really was. I have a strong suspicion that he may have used that as his pen name. Thanks again. Sincerely, Janice

Just wanted to add to my last post the names of two black gentleman responsible for the "start" of great music that I couldn't remember last night. That great man who wrote that beautiful song "Memories" was Eubie Blake; W. C. Handy wrote "Birth of the Blues". Both songs are still popular today.

To learn more about Mr. Blake just type in your "search" area located on your computer the name Eubie Blake. You will learn not about his history and all the other standards he wrote still popular today, but a history of the black artists in music - fascinating, interesting and if you're really sincere about your music - you'll be on that site for hours.

Just a reminder that the 2nd Rez Alumni Reunion is on Saturday, October 18th, at Tri-State Sports, Concord Road, Aston, PA. More details will be coming soon (time and additional info). To date, only (4) people have sent in their money that they are attending!!! It's rather hard to plan an event when you don't have any idea how many are coming. Last year we had 360 people pay ahead and an additional 340 came the day of the event. We want to purchase some small gifts to hand out that day, so we need a number to work with. If you are planning to pay $7, please send to: Rez Alumni, PO Box 1168,Brookhaven, PA 19015. If you plan on paying that day ($10), please send an e-mail to me, cupi14@aol.com, that you are planning to attend. Also, when you send in your check, please mark what class you are from.

Thanks again, Marie

Her name was Evelyn and her sister's names are Floretta (I think you may know her well), Catherine, Shirley(The Flame), and Lillian (Patricia on occasions)One thing your right about, the Lucas boys had a rep for being wild. I went to live with them when my mother passed on in 1958. They raised me! We lived in the projects in Upland at the time. There was Edward, Richard, Butch, Dallas, and Earl (Jr.), who just passed away. Email me at the address I provided. Don't know how much I can help you with. I just tracked down my sister Carol after 45 years and have a lot of empty spaces also. Take Care T.L.

By the way, Shamburger, I forgot to include in my long post that I realize you are of the black race, and the blacks have given us the best of the best when it comes to music. They have contributed more to the music entertainment field in America than any other race (except that my dad would say the Jewish people too - and I would add, the Irish helped a bit). I could name them but it would take up too much space, but believe me, I know all their names (I can still hear Louie laughin'). However, I must admit here that I am having a problem remembering the name of the man who wrote that beautiful song "Memories". He passed away just a few years ago at the age of 90 or so, and he was one of the forerunners in our music library. Anyone remember his name - two initials, then a last name.

Our biggest loss was Sammy Davis, Jr. - the entertainer's entertainer. He was so exciting and beloved. Our latest loss was Gregory Hines - another multi-talented gent - young - 57?. Chester's contribution to greatness was Ethel Waters - oh, how great she was!!! A very humble lady in her greatness.

Let Chester's present generation take some lessons in their future music ambitions from those who went before them who strived to give them the chance to excel. What goes 'round never hurts to come 'round once again.

Well Shamburger - we meet again and agree again. I hesitate to post here but never one to avoid a hearty confrontation on a subject, and being a true Chesterite with having always the goal of this site in mind, I submit the following:

The "dark" hole of entertainment never existed until the "dark side" of music came into being. Before bare-chested, drug-infested three-string guitarists, drummers with no knowledge of how to use brushes, only sticks, and lyricists with three or four lines of non-understandable words to share and repeated bars of "music" inundated the uneducated young minds in this country, there was MUSIC. As we older "but wiser" folks say, "In my day" there was DAMN GOOD MUSIC.

You are so right about the post-marking of an envelope containing your material - this is one safe and secure method of proving your authorship. My father did that in 1932 - YES 1932 - for the rights to his song. A fail-proof method. But he did it on a postcard - sent to himself - better still. My sister now has the music and lyrics of his song framed in her home. I saw that postcard, but it is now lost to time, unfortunately.

However, the "dark" side of entertainment never existed in "my day". That's because it's all about money today, not MUSIC. Some of you young people should rent videos or view the old movies (especially the Betty Grable/Dick Haymes/Harry James movies during WW11)on cable regarding how music was written by the greats, how they starved and sacrified their personal needs for love of the gift God gave them to create beautiful music - mostly romantic for the male and female to express what is in their hearts for each other, their parents, children, grandchildren, etc. This is what music is all about - the expression of what is in our hearts that many of us find difficult to verbally express. It is said that when we die, we will hear the most beautiful music in heaven ever imagined. I'd still like to hear a little bit of heaven right here on earth.

Let's get back to the beauty God meant us to enjoy in music and write our beautiful music for future generations and there will no longer be a "dark" hole of entertainment.

Incidently, it shouldn't hoit to include a little comedy in some of our music. And by the way, Shamburger, what happened with the "old folks' tales" you were going to include here? Don't give up; there's always tomorrow.

I have not written on this site for a while. I have been reading the letters, notes, comments however. But LAWD! I just read the message from Donnie B-Legs...Donnie, sounds like you need a lawyer (and a good english teacher would not hurt) Your situation sounds like infringement. What you should have done was copywritten (you can do this for verbal, vocal and video creations as well as written.) ie;songs, poetry, stories, before EVER letting anyone obtain possession of anything you do. The moment you gave your music and lyrics to the other party (with a handshake and verbal)get real! Those days are over young man. You stated this happened to you before, well did you not learn anything from that? Did you bother to talk to anyone in the music business before allowing yourself to be taken? What confuses me even more is how you think this website could heolp you? You state you are sending demo's ....well what type of protection have you gotten this time so you will not experience being ripped off again? If you cannot afford to copywrite your creations, mail your songs, tracks to yourself DO NOT OPEN THE ENVELOPE EVER! You ask why? Because the best person in the world to keep dates on mail is none other than our own US POSTAL SERVICE...(The envelope is postmarked). This postmark is your proof that your music was created at said time so if anyone should ever "help themselves to it." you have proof. Send it to about 3-4 others.....TELL THEM TO NEVER OPEN IT....THAT IS THE BEST COPYWRITE OF THEM ALL....US POSTAL SERVICE....TRUST ME ON THIS....

You say you are desperate, and willing to take risk yet you also say you are no fool....that is a contradiction in itself. Not to be rude or trying to be smart, you are being a fool if you continue to "create" and leave yourself opened to any and everyone to "help themselves" to your music and lyrics. The entertainment field is very cut throat. Before you put yourself out there, you should really allign yourself with people who are truly looking out for your best intrest. If you believe your music is "dope" as you say, don't be afraid to approach the Philadelphia talents such as DJ Jazzy Jeff, Jill Scott, The Roots. These talents came from the streets and know the business.

Before embarking on another quest, make some calls, use the web. But whatever you do, stop sending anything without protecting yourself. Read up on how other people have stolen the "creations" of others.

And since I am being blunt here, your letter (for some) will not start a beef...but you sure as heck started something...but your letter sounds more like you are trying to be discovered. I truly think you missed the purpose of this particular website.

And this is to no-name in awaiting Caroline's response to Mr. D-B-LEGS.....you are the one who is trying to start the beef. I hope Caroline does not dignify your response with what you are expecting.

Donnie I wish you luck....or worse a lawyer. EMBRACE THE DAY

PS if you need info on copywriting: THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS....has many websites and the forms needed on line...or go to the library.

Hello John Bullock III, I sent an e-mail to you with a pic of Chester P.O. to give you an idea of what I might have. I have on a CD 16 or 17 pics of old Chester, postcards that I scanned to the CD. I need a place to mail the CD to, so you can add the appropriate ones to the data already available. My computer is very slow at e-mailing pictures, so I would prefer to mail you the CD via the US postal service. Included in these pics are a few churches, Chester H.S., market square, and some city streets with chickens wandering around in the dirt and ruts. Sooooo, give me an address and I'll mail away... With summer coming to an end and many of us back and trying to catch up on what has been happening here at OLDCHESTERPA we’d like to say that its nice seeing you again. We hope your summer was a full and enjoyable one.

You will see we now have a class reunion area on the menu and many new schools and classes have added their information to the reunion calendar.

WHAT's NEW is ever changing and our Fall get together is only afew days short of a month away…

Many of you that have not been on board and perhaps would still like to ad your name to the patrons in the reunion booklet of OCPA , can still do so. The cut off date has been extended for afew more days at the request of some that were away and only this day got back on line. (Wonder if they had OLDCHESTERPA withdraw while sunning on the beach)

Hi, my question is this I did not grow up in Chester but I did live there as a little kid in the seventies my question is more about my family. Im trying to put info together about my mother and fathers families. I have little to go on and whenever I try the genealogy searches I get tons of people names who are not related to me. So I am hoping someone here maybe has some info on names and homes these people lived in. This is some of the info I have my mothers name is Floretta Lucas she was from a family of fifteen. Some of her sisters names were Lillian or Lil, Shirley, Cahterine, I have an uncle named Butch, Dow, and Jr. This family according to my parents was quite known in the fifties in I think in Upland Pennsylvania they were know for their wild ways. My grandmothers name was Goldie and my grandfathers name was Earl. My grandmother had lived over top a bar named the Starbright or Starlite in Marcus Hook PA in her later years. I remember visiting her there when I was little, all I can say was what and interesting place. Anyway does anyone know if its still around. And does anyone know any info on any of my mothers family? And can you fill me in on the names of my other aunts and uncles? My fathers name is Frank Cleary if this helps any?
